CHECK OUT HIS B.U.T.T. BY IAN ABER

NATIONALLY REVERED GAY COMIC SAMPSON HITS TOWN WITH A HEADFUL OF LAUGHS AND A HEART FULL OF VISION

S

ampson McCormick is one of the most prolific stand up comedians out there today. With multiple albums and books, as well as routinely selling out venues across the country, the comic better known as simply Sampson brings his unique comedic voice back to Atlanta. Loved by audiences, Sampson is also a favorite of other queer comedians. Another Southern comic made good, former Atlantan James Adomian hasnothing but praise.

22 | 4.12.17

“Sampson is a comedic powerhouse who enlightens with laughter,” Adomian says. “He is gay, he is black, he is dangerous on stage, and he is funnier than I can legally say. I hope people come to see him in Atlanta and everywhere else he goes, because I love watching him perform.” Sampson’s Cali swag and Southern charm returns to town this weekend for the B.U.T.T. Stand Up Comedy Event. We chatted about the show, his experience, and his mission.

Why is the show called B.U.T.T.? People hear “Butt”, and go ‘What?’ Sex sells, and I love being provocative and going outside of the box, and when I am naming a project, my brain always goes there too. B.U.T.T. is an acronym for Blunt Unfiltered Truth & Testifyin’. I’ve always believed that art, particularly comedy, is about having something to say. And I’m silly, so naming the show the way that I did was an excuse to tell folks, “Come get some BUTT next week.”

Describe your comedy in three words? Warm, down-to-Earth, and theatrical. Besides comedy, what makes you laugh? Sitting on the sofa with friends on a Sunday evening, eating snacks, drinking wine and champagne and gossiping, or signifying and playing the dozens. I’ve grown up doing that, and it’s one of the best ways that I learned (and many people who grew up in the hood under dilapidated conditions) to survive with humor. It’s a great way to bond, loosen up and have a good time. Favorite way to waste a day? Laying in the bed, wrapped up in the covers, snacking and watching classic black movies from the ‘90s. What are two quotes that keep you motivated? “If you can’t fly, run. If you can’t run, walk. If you can’t walk, crawl. But by all means, keep moving.” –MLK “Perseverance is a great element of success. If you only knock long enough and loud enough at the gate, you are sure to wake up somebody.” –Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

What makes a great audience member? A person who comes in with respect for the theater and performance. It seems like folks can’t watch a show without their phone in their hand. That’s the new applause. If they’re taping you, that means they like you. So, someone who comes for an experience and to have a good time. Why pay to come to a comedy show, to sit there with your arms folded? I appreciate audience members who come ready to have fun and respect the theater and the person performing. Advice for any would-be queer comics? It’s safer and a little easier to do than when I first started, but it’s still not easy. But our stories are important, and we are just as funny, as any other comic. You can’t be intimidated by the challenges that come along with it. Simply focus on overcoming those, by being as damn funny as you possibly can be. My general rule is to respect the craft, respect the stage, work hard, study the art. Don’t be on a bunch of bullshit.

What are you reading, watching or listening to right now? I listen to all kinds of music. From Gospel to Hip Hop to House. Every day requires something different to get the job done. As far as reading, I have several books on the nightstand next to my bed that I need to get through. I’m reading The Diary of Anne Frank, The Autobiography of Malcolm X, The Alchemist and The Rose that Grew from Concrete by 2Pac. There are bookmarks in all of them, and I’m enjoying them all. What would 13-year-old Sampson say to you if you could meet? Damn, you’ve grown up! ...Let me borrow $20 Sampson brings his B.U.T.T. Standup Comedy show to Highland Ballroom, 644 N. Highland Ave. NE, on Sunday, April 16, at 7 p.m. The show also features local gay comics Ian Aber and Julie Osborne. Visit eventbrite.com and sampsoncomedy.com. What is TRUVADA for PrEP (Pre-exposure Prophylaxis)?

TRUVADA is a prescription medicine that can be used for PrEP to help reduce the risk of getting HIV-1 infection when used together with safer sex practices. This use is only for adults who are at high risk of getting HIV-1 through sex. This includes HIV-negative men who have sex with men and who are at high risk of getting infected with HIV-1 through sex, and male-female sex partners when one partner has HIV-1 infection and the other does not. Ask your healthcare provider if you have questions about how to prevent getting HIV-1. Always practice safer sex and use condoms to lower the chance of sexual contact with body fluids. Never reuse or share needles or other items that have body fluids on them.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION

I What is the most important information I should know about TRUVADA for PrEP? Before taking TRUVADA for PrEP to reduce your risk of getting HIV-1 infection: u You must be HIV-negative. You must get tested to make sure that you do not already have HIV-1 infection. Do not take TRUVADA for PrEP to reduce the risk of getting HIV-1 unless you are confirmed to be HIV-negative. u Many HIV-1 tests can miss HIV-1 infection in a person who has recently become infected. If you have flu-like symptoms, you could have recently become infected with HIV-1. Tell your healthcare provider if you had a flu-like illness within the last month before starting TRUVADA for PrEP or at any time while taking TRUVADA for PrEP. Symptoms of new HIV-1 infection include tiredness, fever, joint or muscle aches, headache, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhea, rash, night sweats, and/or enlarged lymph nodes in the neck or groin. While taking TRUVADA for PrEP to reduce your risk of getting HIV-1 infection: u You must continue using safer sex practices. Just taking TRUVADA for PrEP may not keep you from getting HIV-1. u You must stay HIV-negative to keep taking TRUVADA for PrEP. u To further help reduce your risk of getting HIV-1: • Know your HIV-1 status and the HIV-1 status of your partners. • Get tested for HIV-1 at least every 3 months or when your healthcare provider tells you. • Get tested for other sexually transmitted infections. Other infections make it easier for HIV-1 to infect you.

• Get information and support to help reduce risky sexual behavior. • Have fewer sex partners. • Do not miss any doses of TRUVADA. Missing doses may increase your risk of getting HIV-1 infection. • If you think you were exposed to HIV-1, tell your healthcare provider right away. u If you do become HIV-1 positive, you need more medicine than TRUVADA alone to treat HIV-1. TRUVADA by itself is not a complete treatment for HIV-1. If you have HIV-1 and take only TRUVADA, your HIV-1 may become harder to treat over time. TRUVADA can cause serious side effects: u Too much lactic acid in your blood (lactic acidosis), which is a serious medical emergency. Symptoms of lactic acidosis include weakness or being more tired than usual, unusual muscle pain, being short of breath or fast breathing, nausea, vomiting, stomach-area pain, cold or blue hands and feet, feeling dizzy or lightheaded, and/or fast or abnormal heartbeats. u Serious liver problems. Your liver may become large and tender, and you may develop fat in your liver. Symptoms of liver problems include your skin or the white part of your eyes turns yellow, dark “tea-colored” urine, light-colored stools, loss of appetite for several days or longer, nausea, and/or stomach-area pain. u You may be more likely to get lactic acidosis or serious liver problems if you are female, very overweight (obese), or have been taking TRUVADA for a long time. In some cases, these serious conditions have led to death. Call your healthcare provider right away if you have any symptoms of these conditions. u Worsening of hepatitis B (HBV) infection. If you also have HBV and take TRUVADA, your hepatitis may become worse if you stop taking TRUVADA. Do not stop taking TRUVADA without first talking to your healthcare provider. If your healthcare provider tells you to stop taking TRUVADA, they will need to watch you closely for several months to monitor your health. TRUVADA is not approved for the treatment of HBV. I Who should not take TRUVADA for PrEP? Do not take TRUVADA for PrEP if you already have HIV-1 infection or if you do not know your HIV-1 status. If you are HIV-1 positive, you need to take other medicines with TRUVADA to treat HIV-1. TRUVADA by itself is not a complete treatment for HIV-1. If you have HIV-1 and take only TRUVADA, your HIV-1 may become harder to treat over time. Do not take TRUVADA for PrEP if you also take lamivudine (Epivir-HBV) or adefovir (HEPSERA).

EASTER PALOOZA ANNUAL ARMORETTES DRAG RACES PUTS IN TIP OF SUNDAY PARTIES TO CELEBRATE THE LONG HOLIDAY WEEKEND IN THE GAYEST WAY POSSIBLE BY MATTHEW HOLLEY It is that time of year again! April showers, sun, flowers, Speedos filled with a couple of Cadburys, and the campiest queens donning their Sunday best and racing you to a finish line at a local favorite gay bar. Must be Easter in gay Atlanta. And as the gay Atlanta options for Easter Sunday grow – turn the page for a full rundown – you best be sure that the love, laughter, alcohol and bonnets 28 | 4.12.17

will still be in the air setting the traditional standard during the annual Armorettes Easter Drag Races. Now an Atlanta staple the notorious event has been one of the troupe’s most popular traditions almost as long as when these queens first slapped on some paint and threw on a wig all the way back in 1979. These Camp Queens of the South

started out for pure entertainment but have transformed into so much more, says Trashetta Galore, who will be among the Armorettes corralling the queens on Sunday. “We are Atlanta’s true camp drag,” she says. “Once the AIDS epidemic hit in the ‘80s and no help was given, we all realized this was an organization destined to bring

Sadly, only the underwear is up for auction, as the Easter Bunny says the models are off limits. After scoring your next pair of egg holders, stick around for more inside the bar. Due to high demand from their ever-faithful fans, the cast not only hosts the full day of fun, but they also take part in the games, then put on a special edition of their weekly show. According to Armorette veteran Nurse Holly, this is one Sunday Fun Day you will not want to miss. “People do bring their kids to watch and participate, but don’t worry.” Holly says. “You will still get the raunchy, politically incorrect craziness that night following the races.” So come on out and join these amazing queens for a holy holiday filled with endless drag, drinks, games, and more. Armorettes Easter Drag Races take place Sunday, April 16, at Burkhart’s, 1492 Piedmont Ave. NE. Visit burkharts.com and armorettes.com, and turn the page for a full rundown of this year’s gay Atlanta Easter bashes.

awareness and any service we could provide. Hence, our PWA fund was formed.” Over the years, the Armorettes have raised more than $2.2 million for local organizations that assist people living with HIV/AIDS, including beneficiaries of local groups H.E.R.O., For Children, Someone Cares, Inc., Lost N Found Youth, and AIDS Alliance for Faith and Health, to name just a few. “The fight is not over,” Trashetta says. “With the current administration making budget cuts left and right to AIDS/HIV programs, what the Armorettes do now is more important than ever.” Of course, that’s only one of the many reasons to come out and support the

beloved Easter Drag Races. Other reason? Because it’s fun! This year, the girls have quite the soiree planned. Held in Burkhart’s parking lot, cocktails will flow, food will be accessible, and the friendly fun will shower the crowd. Each year, prize packages are donated for carnival game and race winners, as well as the bonnet contest, ranging from $200 to upwards of $1000. The colorful carnival ride would not be complete without a sexy underwear auction. Boy Next Door Menswear has graciously provided coveted brands such as Andrew Christian, all to be displayed by some serious eye candy. Bid the drawers right off the models.

The rhinestones, the beauty, the hair, and the crowns all higher and closer to God than mere mortals can bare. The pageant has come a long way since its beginnings in a starkly different world of Nashville in 1972 to become the world’s first and longest running female impersonation competition with satellite, qualifying, and preliminary events across the country. It includes such luminaries as Atlanta favorite Necole Luv Dupree. Celebrating its 45th anniversary in 2017, the Miss Gay America season kicked off in March with the Miss Gay Heart of America pageant. It was the first of nearly two-dozen preliminaries happening across the country, each of which will send a winner and alternate to the Miss Gay America nationals in New Orleans this October. Miss Gay Southeast America takes place in September in Raleigh, North Carolina.

5 BEST DRAG DOCUMENTARIES

To celebrate the big anniversary, MGA compiles its list of drag documentaries, including a brilliant new forthcoming doc that few know about. Most are available online, or via streaming and other paid content services. Get your Drag History 101 with five of the best documentary films ever made on female impersonation pageants, then get to missgayamerica.com to follow the 2017 season toward the grand finale. “The Queen” (pictured left) follows a New York City pageant in 1968 and is beloved for its fiercely quotable moments. “Paris Is Burning” should need no introduction. “The Damn Deal” and “Pageant” are each about the Miss Gay America competition. The forthcoming “The Queens,” not only goes inside the Miss Continental pageant–the other major drag pageant–but also delves into the history one of the worlds’ most

THE QUEEN, 1968 (pictured on pg.34) Before there was “Paris Is Burning,” there was “The Queen,” starring the legendary Flawless Sabrina, who produces and MC’s the Miss All-America Camp Beauty Pageant held at Manhattan’s Town Hall in 1967. The New York Times review at the time said, “Funny–and inspired– extraordinary in their Atlantic City of Genet–in their Forest Hills of drag– these gentlemen in bras, diaphanous gowns, lipstick, hairfalls and huff– discussing their husbands in the military in Japan, or describing their own problems with the draft–one grows fond of them all.” And, darling, if you thought “Paris Is Burning”* taught you what “reading” was, wait till you get a load of sore loser Crystal in a deliciously seething post-pageant rage. Judges included Andy Warhol and George Plimpton. Produced by Si Litvinoff (“Clockwork Orange,” “The Man Who Fell to Earth”) and Lewis Allen (“Fahrenheit 451,” “Lord of the Flies”).

“Paris is Burning” is not only a treasured time capsule of LGBT history, but also a cuttingly honest examination of race, class, gender, and sexuality in America.

THE DAMN DEAL, 1997 Filmmaker, writer and former Miss America, Elizabeth Gracen interviewed three contestants in the Miss Gay America Pageant system–including former Miss Gay Arkansas 1993 Kelly Cruise (Spencer May)–for her captivating, beautifully lit and shot black-and-white documentary, “The Damn Deal” (Flapper Films).

While many of these films have or will soon secure their “status in the ballroom,” few are as truly “legendary” as “Paris Is Burning” (pair it up with “The Queen” for a great double-feature.) Jenny Livingston’s 1991 documentary (shot in the late Eighties) lifts the lid on the deeply underground ball culture of New York City and the African-American, Latino, gay and transgender communities that created it. Fascinating, heartbreaking, and eminently quotable (“Shade is I don’t tell you you’re ugly but I don’t have to tell you because you know you’re ugly ... and that’s shade,” Dorian Corey), 36 | 4.12.17

Miss Gay America contestants featured are Miss Gay Western States America 2007 Alina Malletti, Miss Gay Southern States America 2016 Chantal Reshae, Miss Gay America 2011 Coti Collins, Miss Gay North Carolina America 2008 Victoria “Porkchop” Parker, and Miss Gay America 2009 Victoria DePaula.

The recovered, original footage, now restored, explores gender, identity and what it was like to grow up gay in the South at the end of the 20th century.

THE QUEENS, DEBUTING 2017

PAGEANT, 2008 PARIS IS BURNING, 1991

(“If she goes, I go”). One of the many touching moments in the film is when Carl Glorioso’s grade school-age brother proudly shows off his big brother’s drag closet.

This documentary by Stewart Halpern takes a look at the 34th Miss Gay America pageant (2008) in which 52 men-who-live-as-men strive to achieve the most convincing illusion of feminine beauty. With all hormone and surgical enhancements banned from the competition, contestants rely entirely on tricks of makeup, wigs and wardrobe, and are rigorously judged in five categories including Male Interview, Evening Gown and Talent. “Pageant” follows five contestants as they prepare and compete for the Miss Gay America crown. Along for the ride are those who love and support them: husbands, mothers (“I want to be there when he wins, I want to be a part of it”), sons, and little brothers

Set to debut in Spring 2017 and produced by The Reporters Inc., this feature-length film about the 36-yearold Miss Continental Pageant goes backstage and into the lives of its rainbow of contestants, which includes both trans women and cisgender men. “The Queens” explores the whys and hows of the physical alterations the trans contestants have made to their outer bodies and also looks at the tensions that arise between those who have and have not undergone physical alterations to their appearance. Because Miss Continental is so closely linked to Chicago’s legendary female impersonation nightclub, The Baton (Jim Flint created and owns them both), “The Queens” also delves into the history of the iconic, 46-year-old show lounge. ‘WANDERING JEW’ NEW TRAVEL BOOK BY GAY GADABOUT KEN SCHNECK PROVIDES PERFECT ESCAPISM TO ADVENTURE FOR STAY-AT-HOME NON-ADVENTURERS Now more than ever, we all need a little escapism to gain perspective on our world and our lives. Realistic escapism is not buying a villa in Italy and pretending to be Diane Lane under the setting Tuscan sun.

the Gay Biography and Gay & Lesbian Travel sections on Amazon.

Sometimes it’s taking two weeks to lose yourself in the Colorado Rockies when you’ve never been camping, and the idea of digging a hole for a restroom feels more metaphorical than actual.

Schneck’s literal and figurative journeys in this travelogue present situations that he hopes everyone can relate to, especially the 35,000 weekly listeners of his radio show This Show is So Gay and readers of his viral Huffington Post column. For those who think the show sounds particularly familiar, it has even featured young gay Atlanta rapper J. Tyler among its many guests.

Enter Seriously...What Am I Doing Here? The Adventures of a Wondering and Wandering Gay Jew, due out next month from 1984 Publishing by Ken Schneck. In just two weeks of presale, Seriously… sits at No. 1 in both

All the same, Schneck takes full responsibility if there’s a surge of inexperienced campers rushing to the Rockies the way day hikers flocked to the Pacific Crest Trail to Wild their way to personal fulfillment.

42 | 4.12.17

An academic gay Jew who had never been an adventurer, in Seriously…, he finds himself stumbling twice into rural Uganda signing up for a 425-mile bike ride deep in the backwoods of the aforementioned Colorado Rocky Mountains, and much more. “There’s a dearth of gay writers out there who actually have focus, can write as opposed to tweeting or just relaying a salacious tale, and with supreme respect to David Sedaris, are under 60. Or under 50. Or even under 40,” Schneck says. “I tried to write a book that is witty without being bitchy, intelligent without being academic, meaningful without being self-help-y¨ and entertaining without being fluff.”

‘WANDERING JEW’, Continued His occasionally heartbreaking, often insightful, and reliably witty travelogue has at its core our never-ending search for meaning, our desperate need to grasp that elusive sense of place and community, and how we often fail to succeed — sometimes hilariously so — but keep right on trying. “I could not be more excited for people to get their hands on the pages as I really do think they represent something quite different than what is out there on the market,” Schneck

tells David Atlanta. “It is a well-written, hilarious and heartbreaking set of gay travel adventures. I think your readers would devour the content.”

What Am I Doing Here?”

Further expanding on the insights found in Seriously…, Schneck proves a font of answers to questions that gays and straights, Jews and Gentiles, and everyone else will find entertaining and enlightening:

• What can we gain from throwing ourselves into adventure?

• Does the geographic cure actually works and how this gay Jew used saying “yes” to the unfamiliar to answer that universal question of “Seriously...

• How can folks motivate themselves to get back up after they’ve fallen down?

• How can we all benefit from escapism right now? • So how does one not just cope with our current political climate, but use our dissatisfaction as motivation to affect change? Besides being the producer-host of the radio show-podcast This Show is So Gay, Schneck is an Associate Professor and the Director of the Leadership in Higher Education Program at Baldwin Wallace University, where he teaches courses on anti-racism, ethical leadership, and how individuals can work with communities to create a more engaged and just world. Stalkers can find him telling stories in and around Cleveland. Visit KenSchneck.com and ThisShowIsSoGay.com, as well as his Huffington Post column. Seriously…What Am I Doing Here? can be preordered at 1984Publishing.com and found after May 23 wherever books are sold.

SPILLING SEED BY GREGG SHAPIRO

LINGER AT HOME WITH THESE TWO SEXY DVDs

S

ome movies just don’t get their due attention until they hit the DVD and pay-per-view market. That goes double for LGBT fare, and triple if that fare is super, uber, double-extra sexy. That’s just as well in this case, because you’ll want to be able to linger with these two titles and revisit them in ways you just couldn’t in the theater, whether you caught either of these two gay gems in the theater the first time or not. (Both selections played Atlanta’s Out on Film in 2016). So turn out the lights and cue up two gay movies you won’t want to miss.

PARIS 05:59: THÉO & HUGO (Europa/Epicentre) Co-written and co-directed by Olivier Ducastel and Jacques Martineau, this is a timely and sensitive reminder of the current state of things in the world of gay sex. The lengthy, erotically-charged and sexually graphic opening sequence takes place in a sex club where the redlit lower level is swarming with writhing naked men engaging in various sex acts. Curly-haired Théo (Geoffrey Couët) can’t take his eyes off of hot Hugo (François Nambot) and when they finally hook-up, awhirl in the heat of the moment, they engage in unsafe behavior. Afterwards, upstairs, they retrieve their clothes, get dressed and leave the club together. It’s 4:47 a.m. Riding bikes through the city, they talk about the connection they felt and how it was different. On the way to Hugo’s 46 | 4.12.17

apartment, Théo admits it was his first time at a sex club. Further discussion reveals that they didn’t use a condom and that Hugo is HIV+. Hugo calls the AIDS hotline and is directed to the emergency room of a nearby hospital. They exchange phone numbers. Théo insists on going to the hospital alone. Hugo texts him relentlessly. It is 5:02 a.m. Théo registers at hospital. Hugo arrives and tells Théo he’s in treatment and that his viral load is undetectable. Hugo stays with Théo and he begins the treatment regimen because he didn’t want him to be alone, as he was, when he got his test results. At 5:25 a.m., after leaving the hospital, Théo and Hugo get to know each other even more intimately than they did before, filling in the pieces of their lives for each other. You can watch them slowly becoming involved with the other in a way that is reminiscent of Andrew Haigh’s Weekend. Romantic and revelatory, Paris 05:59: Théo & Hugo is strongly recommended. In French with English subtitles. DVD bonus features include Daniel Maggio’s short film The Glory Hole.

SEED MONEY (BREAKING GLASS) This cleverly titled doc about the late gay porn entrepreneur Chuck Holmes, co-founder of Falcon Studios, is as sexy as it is informative. Indiana-native Holmes, considered to be the gay Hugh Hefner, understood what Middle America was missing. A collector of 8mm porn loops, Holmes came out fast in San Francisco. The landmark 1969 Supreme Court ob-

scenity ruling paved the way the birth of the mail order porn industry. Holmes found good gay filmmakers, as well as better models and locations, allowing the genre to evolve from badly produced loops to full-length features, while celebrating the new gay freedoms of a post-Stonewall world at the same time. The home video revolution only increased Holmes’ success, while the AIDS crisis had serious consequences. Writer/director Michael Stabile’s feature-length doc debut is a respectful and respectable portrait of Holmes. Stabile’s interview subjects, including porn legend Jeff Stryker, Jake Shears, Chi Chi LaRue, John Waters, Steve Scarborough (Falcon VP from 1986-93), actors Tom Chase, Jim Bentley and Steve Cruz, John Rutherford (Falcon VP from 1993-2002) and many others go a long way in illuminating the story of Holmes and Falcon. DVD bonus features include a deleted scene, as well as extended interviews with Waters, Chase, LaRue, Stryker and others.

Barring supernatural insight, something tells me if you can cut up and still want into each other’s pants, this may be a match.

Hey, Daddy! I’m in love with my best friend. Half the time I think he knows how I feel, the other half he seems clueless. He’s really bad at sharing feelings. I’d like to bring down his emotional barriers, but I’ve seen him bolt at the slightest hint somebody wants to get serious. I don’t want to spook him permanently.

HEY,

DADDY! BEST FRIENDS. WITH BENEFITS? Hey, Daddy!

I’ve made eyes and dropped hints. How can I get through?

Looks Of Valid Emotion, Still I Can’t Kickstart Dear LOVE SICK: There’s a reason communication is key: It works. Still, too much is Kryptonite for people who can’t face feelings. Forcing guys into conversations they aren’t equipped to handle can be disastrous. You have two choices. Let it go without revealing yourself, or tell him in the most non-confrontational way possible – “Hey, I’ve got this situation, and I’m wanting to know your thoughts (not feelings!) about it.” – and then still let it go. If he’s interested, let him circle back around to it in his own time.

Well, it happened. I had sex with my best friend. I saw it coming, but did he? If he sees it as a mistake, things might be weird. If he’s glad, there could be more to explore. When we’re not queening out and laughing, he’s the silent type. How can I find out where we stand?

The former option to leave it unspoken may sound harsh but is worth considering. If you’re the type of person who pushes for emotional resolutions, not only are you his worst nightmare, you won’t thrive in a relationship that avoids communication. You might be better off not getting involved.

DADDY LOVES HIS BOYS

You didn’t write in to a psychic. Like you, I have no idea how your friend feels. Luckily, we have a method to find out: Communication.

He knows the answers you need, and you’re going to get them. Reach out to him with your burning questions via our editor, mike@davidatlanta.com.

Ask how he feels. Chances are he has the same questions. Fear of the answers is worse than knowing them. It’s only weird if you let it fester.

ARIES (Mar. 21 – Apr. 19):

LIBRA (Sep. 23 – Oct. 22):

As your sense of direction is getting clearer, you may realize a bit late that you’ve been overly emphatic about petty issues with your partner. The biggest problem is disagreeing on the real problem. Listen more; argue less.

A little flirting can lead to some eye-opening adventures. A hot fling can offer new insights; it probably won’t last, but enjoy and learn what you can. Your age is an asset, not an obstacle.

TAURUS (Apr. 20 – May 20):

SCORPIO (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21):

Your financial luck is getting a brief uptick that will require a bit of effort, but a little initiative can go a long way. Ask for that raise, put out some résumés. When to buy lottery tickets? Check with your astrologer!

If you see as an argument as an opportunity to learn rather than an exercise in intellectual bulldozing, what you learn can open job opportunities and help you start or deepen an important relationship. Ask hard questions and accept hard answers.

GEMINI (May 21- Jun. 20):

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21):

Expectations exploding into arguments can trigger a sharp reassessment of who your friends really are – who you can count on in a pinch or for a pinch. “Friends with benefits” are likeliest to get problematic.

Every partnership needs a bit of work. Dealing with problems now should yield happy results. That could lead to exuberant fun and risk-taking. Go for the fun. Pass on the risks. Think ahead and use good sense.

CANCER (Jun. 21- Jul. 22):

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19):

As the future is looking a little rosier than usual find ways to invest your time and energy in things that matter. Financial investments are less reliable, but with a shrewd, critical eye you may find something worth the risk.

Winning the battle at home can cost you the war. Be open to changing your mind and even yourself. It’s called “growth.” Openness and adaptability are the keys to success. Taking on the hard challenges will pay off quickly.

LEO (Jul. 23 – Aug. 22):

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18):

For your own sake and those you love set some rules and limits. Some people will be shocked, but they’ll manage. Hold your ground. There may be a cost, but demanding some basic respect will increase your confidence and your authority.

You need a good intellectual challenge. Don’t settle for a mere argument. Talk with a sibling offers can terrific insight on your family and how you carry those patterns into your relationships.

VIRGO (Aug. 23 – Sep. 22):

PISCES (Feb. 19 – Mar. 20):

Playing tough is OK if everyone is on the same wavelength. It’s all good fun until someone gets hurt. If it’s consensual that could be when the real fun begins. Challenging your own creative efforts can open a good catharsis.

Every relationship hits bumps and needs work. Problems with your partner gain clarity but still need some work. Some expert advice could help. Having a little fun and affirming your commitment can also do wonders.

bitch session Oh yay. Another fuckface on social media with half the story and something to say about it.

I married him because he believed in me. I’m divorcing him because he criticizes everything I do.

When his Grindr profile tries to talk about what kind of top he is, but you’ve had him beg to get you further up his booty.

What’s wrong, boo? You unloved, bitter, jaded, drunk and/or hungover again? #hateitforyou

This bitch swipin’ left when he should be using his right to take me on a date!

Please stop saying ‘no judgment’ before judging. Own your bullshit.

You threaten to unfriend me on Facebook. Lemme shutter at the thought while you go figure out I unfriended you years ago.

You bitches should support your friends the way you support the celebrities you don’t know.

How do I tell my best friend that he overstayed his welcome?

I couldn’t wait to marry you. I’m still glad I did, but now I can’t wait to get away from you for one weekend.
