WOOFS ON NEW YEAR’S EVE PHOTOS: James Hicks
davidatlanta.com | 17
Her sixth studio album, The Ride, is scheduled for release on March 31, so be ready to have one of her songs stuck in your head for the majority of 2017. ED SHEERAN The crooner is already making news and breaking records this year, and it’s not even February yet. Both his new songs, “Shape Of You” and “Castle On The Hill,” broke Spotify’s single-day streaming record with more than 6 million each. Expect his album to drop veerrrry soon.
2017’S MOST ANTICIPATED ALBUMS BY DJ MARC J. CUBS
BEATBOX SWOOPS IN TO SAVE YOU FROM BEING A BASIC TUNES BITCH WITH A PREVIEW OF THE YEAR’S BEST HOPE FOR GREAT MUSIC. WELCOME TO YOUR FIRST BEATBOX of 2017! I hope you’re having a great start to your year and that you haven’t already broken your New Year’s Resolution of being a basic music bitch.
most excited to get my hands on. She hasn’t put out new music since 2014’s “Yellow Flicker Beat” from The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1 soundtrack, so I’m Jonesing for some new stuff.
If you did, fear not, I am hear to guide you along the year’s musical journey. As you know, 2016 saw some pretty tame music releases. I for one am super excited about all the goodness that is scheduled to be released (or hinted at) this year.
She teased fans around her 20th birthday this past November that the album is already complete and in post-post-post production. So what’s the holdup? She’s scheduled to perform at Coachella in mid-April, so you know an album is coming out pretty soon.
Below are some of the most anticipated albums of what will hopefully be an amazing 2017.
NELLY FURTADO Probably the most “OMG” artist on this list, The Promiscuous Girl herself, returns. Yes, the “I’m Like A Bird” singer is back and ready to take back her crown of making catchy AF songs.
LORDE In addition to Robyn, Lorde’s new project is one of the releases that I’m 18 | 1.18.17
TAYLOR SWIFT T Swizzle has a history of releasing an album every two years. Red was released in October 2012. 1989 was released in October 2014. She’s a few months late, but we do know that she’s been in the studio making new music. I’m personally not a fan, but damn can that girl write a song. TINASHE R&B’s most underrated talent is slated to finally release some new music this year, and no, we’re not just talking mix tapes. Last year, she cancelled her 2016 tour in order to finish off her sophomore album, so more likely than not, a 2017 new album release should happen. Please happen. It better happen. ROBYN Come on through, Robyn! My little Swedish fish, I need new music. We all need new music. And not collaborations. We need “Dancing On My Own”-type of music that will reestablish our belief that there is good Pop music out there. Almost every big-named Pop act last year let me down (cough cough Lady Gaga Britney Spears cough) so I will need you, Robyn, to save us all from this slump of lackluster music. Carly Rae Jepsen can only do so much. 2010 saw the release of two Robyn mini albums (Body Talk Pt. 1 and Body Talk Pt. 2). Those albums were her last solo projects. She hinted at returning to Pop this year, as well finishing up some cancelled tour dates. Until then, I will be crossing every single finger and toe and actually going to church (much to my mother’s delight) to pray for the return of Robyn.
Networking? There’s a maap for that!

TWOMBLEY’S TOP 10 TRAINING TIPS
NEARLY THREE WEEKS IN, YOU MAY BE WANING ON YOUR FITNESS RESOLUTIONS. BUCK UP! LOCAL BODY GURU RICK TWOMBLEY HAS THE INSIGHT TO KEEP YOU ON TRACK. BY MATTHEW HOLLEY 20 | 1.18.17
W
e have all set the goals year after year to join a gym, eat right or hell, just eat better, drink more water, get a full night’s sleep of eight hours, at least ... all culminating in what will be the final product: living a healthier life. So you made a commitment to a better body in 2017. But we get it: As the year progresses and life takes over, motivation to keep said resolutions can go by the wayside. Not this year, bitches! David Atlanta spoke Rick Twombley of Rick Twombley Fitness to crack the secrets for keeping and maintaining all of our body resolutions this year. Gather ‘round, children, as one of Atlanta’s hottest trainers gives us his hottest training advice. HOW TO BEGIN A WORKOUT REGIMEN Mentally prepare yourself to get up and do it. It is not going to get itself done by sitting around. Find someone who can help you, someone who knows the information you need to do it safely. You never want to start a workout program without consulting a doctor or a trainer, both of whom can guide you along the way, preventing medical emergencies. THE BEST EXERCISES FOR TARGET AREAS CHEST: any variation on a push exercise (push-ups, chest press, etc.) BACK: any pulling exercise (pull-ups, seated rows, etc.) LEGS: Squats, deadlifts and lunges. ABS: Planks, weighted Side Leans and diet, diet, diet. The challenging Fork-to-Mouth Resistance Maneuver is where the best abs are made. A STRONG WORKOUT CIRCUIT Any circuit that hits all the major muscle groups and moves your body in all the different planes of movement: sagittal (Left to right), Frontal (front to back), and Transverse (top to bottom). It’s also key to incorporate movement that targets balance, coordination, flexibility, power and reaction time. Doing the exercises in a circuit using timed intervals is also a great way to improve muscular and cardio endurance – and burn a ton more calories for up to 48 hrs after the workout is finished.
choices are the healthier ones...it comes down to discipline and developing good habits. INCREASING WEIGHTS/REPS Depending on personal goals, this can vary. Generally, both increase when previously challenging weight/reps are no longer a challenge. For weight loss and toning, reps would increase first. For packing on muscle and strength, weight would increase first. GYM SAFETY I don’t recommend wearing “supports” for regular daily lifting. Supports should only be required during rehab after obtaining and injury. If you’re training properly, your muscle should be doing the support for you. GYM ETIQUETTE • Always re-rack your weights properly. • Ask to work in on a piece of equipment, don’t just stand and stare or tap your foot impatiently. • Dont “reserve” equipment with towels, weights, water bottles etc. If your butt isn’t in the seat, it’s free game, sorry. On the flip side, don’t sit and browse through your phone on a piece of equipment for three minutes between sets. This isn’t your private gym. This is share time. • Don’t douse yourself in perfume or cologne, but do use deodorant. • Don’t offer unsolicited workout advice. TIME BEFORE/AFTER WORKING OUT ONE SHOULD EAT You want some sort of protein intake within 30 minutes of finishing your workout. BEST TIME OF DAY FOR THE MOST EFFECTIVE WORKOUT Whatever time you can get your butt to the gym on a consistent basis. Rick Twombley-King is an ACSM Certified Personal Trainer. Visit RickTwombleyFitness.com or find him on social media @RickTwombleyFitness.
APPROPRIATE WORKOUT SCHEDULE Generally, it’s recommended for basic health that all adults should do at least 30 minutes of physical activity at least three times a week. However, an individual workout schedule depends on many factors, and changes from person to person. Personal fitness goals, available time, health, injury, and budget are just a few factors that determine how many times a week someone trains. HEALTHY EATING This is easier than most people want to make it. Common sense is 90% of the battle. A Twinkie or an apple? A chicken salad or a Bacon Double Cheese Burger? We all know which

FOR ARTS SAKE BY MIKE FLEMING
DON’T FORGET ARTS ORGANIZATIONS ADDING TO ATLANTA’S RICH FABRIC WHEN CONSIDERING LGBT NON-PROFITS What is art? While you ponder bringing it up at your next gay gathering, let us add that in Atlanta, art is so much more than just entertainment and stimulation. When we did a rundown of LGBT social justice and aide charities last month, it proved one of our most popular posts of the year. People contacted the listed organizations to make donations, and to find out more on how to get involved. That got us thinking. What about all the worthy gay arts non-profits our fair city has to offer? They certainly contribute to the local zeitgeist, and in fact, they directly support LGBT equality by keeping our lives at the forefront in a time when arts are severely underfunded in Georgia. Currently, our state ranks 48th in arts funding, says Paul Conroy, founding artistic director of Out Front Theatre, which produced its inaugural show, ‘Priscilla: Queen of the Desert: The Musical,” in 2016. “I really believe that supporting LGBTQ+ non-profits is vital to advancing social awareness,” Conroy says. We at David Atlanta wholeheartedly agree, so we decided to expand the concept so you know who some of our favorite LGBT-led music, movie, theater and literary non-profits who are more than worthy of your time and money. ACTOR’S EXPRESS While not specifically gay, this respected, long-running theater company is a gay-go-to for LGBT and inclusive content, not the least reason for which is talented artistic director Freddie Ashley. actors-express.com ATLANTA FREEDOM BANDS These LGBT instrumentalists may be best known for their marching band in the Atlanta Pride Parade, but they also feature stage

ATLANTA BUCKS SWITCH JERSEYS & CLEATS FOR HALTERS & HEELS TO KICK OFF 2017 WITH INFAMOUS, RIDICULOUS AND FABULOUS MISS RUCK-N-MAUL PAGEANT. No question about it: 2016 was a drag. But don’t despair, because the jocks of the Atlanta Bucks rugby team are ready to ease you into 2017 with the squad’s annual Miss Ruck-N-Maul drag competition. And trust us: If you’ve never been to a Ruck-N-Maul drag show, this is the year to go. On Saturday, Jan. 21, six Bucks exchange their jerseys and cleats for halters and heels, and take the stage to compete. This year, the Bucks share the proceeds with Ready 4 Hope, and the show is hosted by Brian McCall, David Atlanta’s Man of David 2016. The 11th annual Ruck-N-Maul is ready to raise the bar with “A Beautiful Mess” theme. Last year’s All-Star show featured past winners like D’Kweena England, Barbie Q Sugarbaker and French E. Faux Pas. This year’s Bucks are ready to raise the standard – and the hemlines – even higher. For 2017, the young Bucks twerking on the stage include Martina McDaniels (elegant and graceful, like a classic movie star), Oxomo Delmar (spicy, energetic and unpredictable), Scarlett O’Hell-No (a Southern belle with an attitude), D. Juana Falk (a fierce competitor who knows how to slay), Ora Leigh Popular (the quiet one, no one knows what to expect) and the exciting debut of Miss Tootie Duvet (no boundaries, no shame, all shade).
BEAUTIFUL MESS BY MIKE W. PARIS
D JUANA FALK 26 | 1.18.17
With those bios as their guide, there’s little doubt that the performers can live up to the phrase “A Beautiful Mess” in more ways than one. To make sure they bring it, members of the community (including Hotlanta Softball League) will be on hand to pass out awards for the evening’s messiest moments. As an extra bonus, the team hosts a Silent Auction during the event. The Bucks are set to auction off a variety of items donated by local businesses, with starting bids as low as $30. Learn to cook or dance, enjoy a relaxing massage, take a movie studio tour, and much more. Payments for winning bids can be made with checks, credit card or through PayPal, so don’t worry about
davidatlanta.com | 27
bringing cash. The proceeds help the Bucks pay for necessities, such as field rental, balls, ruck pads and more. Come early to bid on items at the silent auction, have a few drinks from the bar, then throw some dollars at the lovely ladies. The performer who raises the most money will wear the crown, and the others will simply leave in tears and shame. The Bucks were named a David Atlanta hero in 2015 for their penchant to give back. Beneficiary Ready 4 Hope started as an AIDS Walk Atlanta team and is now a non-profit that throws parties and events all year to raise money for AID Atlanta. In previous years, the Bucks have raised funds for organizations including Pride School and Lost N Found Youth. They’ve also donated their time to service projects like the AIDS Walk and appearing in a PSA for Protect Your Monster. Miss Ruck-N-Maul is one of the largest Atlanta Bucks fundraisers of the year, but it’s your only chance each year to see the rugby boys in drag. Once the show is over, the team heads back to the pitch the following week, hosting a team from Savannah, and they’ll be all business.
SCARLETT O’HELL-NO
If you are interested in learning a new sport or cheering them on, you can find the Bucks at Cheney Field every Tuesday and Thursday from 7 p.m. – 9 p.m., or come watch the Bucks play on Saturdays during the spring season that starts in March. Miss Ruck-N-Maul: A Beautiful Mess takes place Saturday, Jan. 21 at Jungle Atlanta, 2115 Faulkner Road NE. Doors at 5:30 p.m., show at 6:30 p.m. Advance tickets are available on EventBrite.

ROMANTIC NETFLIX & CHILL PRESS PLAY ON MOVIE DATE NIGHT WITH THESE POPULAR GAY ROMANCES THAT SET THE MOOD AND GET YOUR GAY CARD PUNCHED. BY MIKE FLEMING We’ve been running down genres of films to help you attain, keep or renew your Gay Card, but none of those lists are as likely to get you some lovin’ as this one. True, unintentionally gay horror flicks and historically pertinent documentaries are a must for every gay who’s any gay, but Romance Movies can get you laid. And isn’t everyone at least a little interested in that as well on Netlfix & Chill night? Thought so. Once again, we solicit the help of gay film critics at Pride.com, NewNowNext, and insights by Fusion.net’s Joel Kim. Rather than sticking to the “classics,” they include some thoroughly modern more recent choices. Of course, the list is by no means exhaustive, but it’s a great place to start when you’re looking to cozy up this winter. 34 | 1.18.17
THE WAY HE LOOKS A new classmate transforms the daily life of a blind teenager who longs for independence and disrupts his relationship with his best friend. With its clean YA plotting, keen observations, and measured pacing, this movie feels like a finely crafted John Green adaptation. Like much of Green’s best work, this movie perfectly captures what it’s like to be a high school student. I’m almost embarrassed to admit that I cried real, happy tears during this movie, and it’s one of the few on this list that I’m excited to watch again. BOYS While training for an important sporting event, teen athletes Sieger and Marc strike up a friendship that soon develops into something more passionate.
Like its protagonist, Boys is sweet and quiet. And though it’s tackling familiar ground, it’s picturesque and poignant in its depiction of a first love. The movie evokes the intoxication you feel from those few hours you spend in isolation with another human, so perfectly in sync without ever having to say a word, and the look of contentment in your eyes after a perfect first kiss. WEEKEND This frank drama centers on the relationship between two gay men who contemplate turning a passionate one-night stand into something more meaningful. A true spiritual successor to Linklater’s Before Sunrise series (this time, with no Melania pornbots in sight). While the intimacy of the movie apparently reads as boring to many a Netflix user, it’s that
davidatlanta.com | 35
same invasive closeness that makes watching these two flawed men connect so sharp and captivating. While many straight reviewers very quickly fell over themselves to write that this movie was “more than just a gay romance,” this movie is very much intrinsically—impossibly—gay in ways that may not be recognizable to someone who hasn’t spent a weekend falling hopelessly in love with a person who views their sexuality wildly differently from how you view your own.
BOY CULTURE A male prostitute maintains a stoic approach to sex and love until a regular customer tempts him to reconsider by sharing a meaningful story. This movie feels very 2006, if that means anything to you at all. Q. Allan Brocka of the Eating Out series co-wrote this adaptation of the eponymous novel by Matthew Rettenmund, and working with an existing story seems to have given Brocka a helpful narrative structure that his Eating Out movies so sorely lacked. Derek Magyar as our central sanctimonious sex worker does his best Ian Somerhalder circa Rules of Attraction here, but the shtick wears pretty thin early on, and its ending is fairly contrived. BIG EDEN Henry Hart returns to Big Eden and winds up confronting his unrequited passion for his high school best friend and his feelings about being gay. This movie, more than any other on this list, nails the feel of an old-school, turn-of-the-millennium romcom. At first glance, you’d think this movie about a successful New York artist returning to his small town would see him battling homophobia, but Big Eden depicts a kind of post-everything utopia that could only exist in the ‘90s. Nearly everyone in this rural town is not only accepting of 36 | 1.18.17
the gay triangle brewing in their midst, but actively invested in it. As in any classic romcom, the outcome of this love triangle is clear from the start, but each relationship is as exquisitely detailed as it would be in a Nora Ephron film. NORTH SEA TEXAS A teen boy living in a small town on the Belgian coast finds his ordinary life take an unexpected turn when a handsome traveler blows through town.
er “married gay not sure if he’s gay” story, which is a tired trope, and would constitute less of a conflict if bisexuality was acknowledged as a possibility in any of these movies. The gay relationship is sweet and convincing, but the beats here are familiar to anyone who’s ever seen a movie of this kind. All that aside, though, In the Grayscale does have the distinction of having one of the best, and to my eyes most realistic, gay sex scene of any movie on this list.
While I understand how difficult summing movies up in just a few sentences must be for whomever Netflix employs to write these synopses, that description makes very little sense, as there are few unexpected turns in this story. A gorgeous, shorter version of Boyhood (but gay), this movie’s romance, such as it is, is less of a two-sided affair and more a reflection of the desperate kind of love you feel for someone as you’re coming of age and first becoming aware of your feelings.
THE SKINNY A year after college graduation, a pact reunites four gay men and a lesbian friend in New York City for a fateful Gay Pride weekend.
RAGTAG When childhood friends reunite, their bond has become even stronger—although the paths they’ve taken with their lives present a challenge. This isn’t completely without merit, but the Canadian public-access production values and some truly bonkers choices on the part of the director and writer make Ragtag tough to get through. There are definitely some glimmers of an interesting story here, but with all its handicaps, the success really rests in the hands of the two stars and their chemistry. They weren’t quite strong enough to carry this thing across the finish line. IN THE GRAYSCALE As an architect, he knows what he wants. But in love and desire he’s a man of two different worlds. A visual love letter to the city of Santiago, the capital of Chile, this is yet anoth-
By this point in our little countdown, you may have noticed just how oppressively white the casts of most of these movies seem. Trust me, it’s exhausting—which is why this movie is such a nice breath of fresh air. Unlike Bear City, this is not a movie explicitly about being black and gay. It’s just a movie that happens to feature an all-black cast, and lets these characters exist like real, human people of color are wont to do. But a pedestrian, at times preachy script bogs down an otherwise winning cast. While there are definitely weak links here, Jussie Smollett (Empire) and Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman (unREAL) are standouts. the good fun parts of a boyfriend and dogs, but none of the work.
Pointedly, I Say Stop Extending Damage Dear PISSED: It’s hard during a split to remember that you can’t have your cake and eat it too. You can no longer rely on each other for your daily needs, and you can’t facilitate a breakup by seeing each other and intertwining your lifestyles –especially at first. You need a clean, hard break. Even if it’s subconscious or unintentional, he is keeping you on a leash, and the dogs are his last bargaining chip. Even if he has the bigger yard, if he is not letting the dogs take advantage of it they might as well be at the condo with you. They are unhappy and acting out at best, neglected at worst. Tell him that you are keeping the dogs for their own good, and that you don’t want to see or hear from him for at least a month because it’s unhealthy the way it’s played out thus far.
HEY,
Daddy!
MY EX WON’T GO AWAY Hey, Daddy!
I was enjoying what I thought was a tough but amicable split from my ex of nine years. He stopped trying, and I stopped trying to make him prioritize us, and we finally agreed to end it. We get together occasionally to ease the transition of being on our own again. We have two dogs, and since he stayed in the place with the yard and I took our condo, he was going to keep them and give me visitation. The problem is, he’s never there to take care of them. First, he complained about them “acting out” and blamed it on me for being gone. Then he said he never even wanted them when we got them, and only agreed to keep them to shut me up. Finally, he made me take them permanently to the cramped condo, which is OK I guess, but now he is actually asking for them back! I’m at a loss. Even before the dog episode, I felt like he was getting together only when it suited him, to the point that it was confusing. Like he wants all 56 | 1.18.17
Not talking or texting won’t come naturally to either of you, and that’s the point. You can both learn what it’s like to live single and begin to process your relationship as well as its end, and begin to dig out of this back-and-forth.
Hey, Daddy! My ex and I have all the same friends. We don’t want anyone to “pick sides,” but we’re also not super excited about seeing each other every time we might want to meet up with the boys. Can I get a break without losing friends?
For Real, I Especially Need Disconnection Swiftly Dear FRIENDS: It’s complicated. You can maintain those relationships and the distance, but the key is for both of you and all of the friends to be honest. White lies to avoid hurt feelings have a way of coming out. Set up ground rules, and be flexible. There may be occasions when one of you straight-up isn’t invited, and other times the two of you need to suck it up and be in the same room so your friends aren’t caught in the middle.
DADDY LOVES HIS BOYS He knows the answers you need, and you’re going to get them. Reach out to him with your burning questions via our editor, mike@davidatlanta.com. Warning: Advice given in this column is intended for entertainment and novelty purposes. Please proceed at your own risk.

ARIES (Mar. 21 – Apr. 19):
LIBRA (Sep. 23 – Oct. 22):
Weird insights can make you wonder how much you really do know yourself. Pushing yourself harder can make things tough on those around you. Ask yourself why you do that and whether it’s really necessary.
Wanting to be healthier and prettier is OK, but when self-improvement becomes competition with others look at what inner demons are feeding that jealousy. Don’t be the evil queen asking, “Mirror, mirror…” Meditation and self-examination bring out your deep, inner beauty.
TAURUS (Apr. 20 – May 20):
SCORPIO (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21):
Who are your friends really? The answers will be surprising, both good and bad. Focus on the good. As much as some people may deserve your wrath, be careful not to say anything you’ll regret later.
Arguments at home are really about stresses outside: tensions with friends or worries over the future. Home should be where you can discuss your agitation and get better insights. Stay calm and focused and it could be.
GEMINI (May 21- Jun. 20):
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21):
There is such a thing as being too nice and there is a middle ground between needless controversies and sweeping important issues under the rug. Blowhard, diplomat or sycophant? The role you choose will brand you for a long time.
Getting too big for your britches undermines the respect people have for you. Humility, charity and a bit of self-deprecating humor will help. A critical review of recent career moves can suggest new directions, but don’t change tack quite yet!
CANCER (Jun. 21- Jul. 22):
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19):
What friends say about your sex life is none of their business, but that doesn’t mean it’s not true. Being sensitive, open and patient with others will help you to improve your reputation, very likely in ways you don’t expect.
Worries about your career are not entirely unfounded, but they are likely exaggerated. Watch out for new opportunities. They will cost you, but may be worth the price. Look ahead and think carefully!
LEO (Jul. 23 – Aug. 22):
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18):
Work on your relationship karma. That’s mostly just practicing the golden rule. Find new, creative ways to do that. Being nice to your friends is too easy. Reach out to new people. If you have someone special do something special.
Flirtatious impulses can prove a bit too extravagant. Remember, one perfect rose is more elegant than a dozen. Don’t dwell on the years that have passed, but think about where you want to be in the future and how to get there.
VIRGO (Aug. 23 – Sep. 22):
PISCES (Feb. 19 – Mar. 20):
The ever-confusing element to personal relationships is about to get more deep and complex. Your efforts at charm and rationalization to clear the air are beside the point. Welcome the magic and mystery. It can do you a lot of good.
With your co-ruler Neptune coming home to stay the next 14 years, you will feel more in tune with the times, a mixed blessing these days. Learn to focus and shield your sensitivity. To care for others effectively, care for yourself first.
