James Baldwin Speaks While Not Your Negro gains accolades, many say that the legendary gay writer was at his most riveting in an extemporized 1969 address. Camera’s rolled on what would become this Horace Ove film, titled Baldwin’s Nigger. It screens alongside the documentary Reggae, hosted by Liquid Blackness, Film Studies at Emory, and the gay-led Film Love.

where to go and
what to do this week
Rush Center Open House There’s been a lot of change in the last six months, and that goes for the groups housed at Atlanta’s defacto gay community center – Atlanta Pride, Georgia Equality, The Health Initiative and more. Come see what they’ve been up to as they expand the facility and work for local LGBT rights.

LNFY Youth Variety Show
Dita Von Teese
Out at the Oscars
The teens and young adults who directly benefit from the work of Lost N Found Youth put on a show for their supper. Bubba D. Licious emcees their amazing talents, and DJ Bill Berdeaux spins your favorite tunes while you help support LNF’s work against LGBT youth homelessness in Atlanta.
The reality star and pinup girl hits Atlanta on her Art of the Teese tour. It’s a full-on burlesque review with Von Teese as the main attraction. While nearly nekkid ladies may not normally be your thing, the artistry and star power is sure to draw some gay male fans accompanying their lesbian friends.
Sometimes called the Gay Super Bowl, the annual awards for all things cinema rolls out the red carpet this year with tons of gay nominations and gay audience members in tow. Watch alongside two gay Atlanta institutions – Out on Film and Out Front Theatre – with food, drinks, contests and prizes.

FISHER’S MOTHER DEBBIE REYNOLDS once said during a joint interview, “All I want for Carrie is for her to be happy.” Fisher, after an oddly introspective pause, replied “Happiness might be one of the many emotions I feel in a day.” Then Debbie began to cry.
WHEN A HERO FALLS BY CHRIS VIZZINI
HOW CARRIE FISHER TAUGHT ONE GAY ATLANTA MAN – AND ALL OF US – TO LAUGH AT OURSELVES, OWN OUR TRUTH AND FORGET WHAT EVERYONE ELSE MIGHT THINK. WHEN I FIRST HEARD THE NEWS that Carrie Fisher died, I began to cry on the spot. It was as if someone had removed the floor beneath me, and I fell into despair in a nanosecond. I was aware of Princess Leia, but I knew her primarily as a writer. In fact, she is the reason I became a writer. Fisher wrote bravely and truthfully, despite that others might not see her as a “sound” person. She wasn’t, and she is well documented not having given a shit about sharing it. What mattered to her was the truth. It superseded the fear of speaking aloud of her many demons and joys. We don’t often see that brand of bravery these days. The fact that she could write to such a degree with unabashed candor gave me the courage to write about my own experiences. She taught me that telling the truth and pulling “learned” shame and fear

into the light saved my life and the lives of others. THE BURNING IN MY HEART INTENSIFIED over her death when I realized that I’d never hear another comically sardonic quip, read another snapping witticism, or see her on a talk show being herself – no matter what anyone thought. The cry then became a sob. The news was an emotional jolt to the solar plexus. I felt like someone in my family had died – maybe even worse, because Carrie Fisher had never hurt me like my family did. She had only been a light in the dark for me. She showed me that artists often process experiences in different ways, and that’s OK. It’s OK to be, think, process and feel differently. That idea liberated me from the shackles of “normalcy,” and made it OK to define that word on my own terms.
I knew Carrie Fisher was a complex woman, but it wasn’t until I saw the interview that it gave me a deeper glimpse at her emotional and psychological make up, as well as the dynamic between mother and daughter. The theme was complex, damaged and heartbreaking. You could see guilt in Reynolds’ eyes and the sadness in Fisher’s. Fisher had been damaged by her mother’s parenting choices on a profound level, while Reynolds was damaged by Carrie’s drug abuse and manic episodes. Then something miraculous surfaced between them in a flash. As they looked at each other, you could see the understanding of one another encapsulated within a little grin from each. Amidst all the pain, they found acceptance and love for each other at some point and allowed us to witness. It was something to see. ASTONISHINGLY, FISHER COULD LAUGH could laugh at the absurdities in her life. It’s a quality I find the most inspiring about her, and it has left an indelible imprint on my soul. We take the cards we’ve been dealt and do the best we can, but can never forget to laugh at how off-the-charts bizarre and unfair, yet comical that it can all be. I’ve learned so much from Carrie Fisher, and my hero has fallen. What do you do when one of the few people in the world who made you feel at home disappears from your life forever? For that, I have no answers except to ensure that we not forget everything she gave us. The icon. The writer. The woman. The phoenix that rose from the ashes. Carrie Fisher is gone, and my heart is broken alongside tens of thousands of others. I will always miss her, but she will reside inside of me forever. For that I’m eternally grateful.

HOT NEWSIES REVIEW Thomas Roberts
SMART HUNKS WHO KEEP US UP-TO-DATE ON CURRENT EVENTS, OR 5 SEXY NEWS GUYS WHO AREN’T ANDERSON COOPER BY JAMES PARKER SHEFFIELD Move over Andy Cohen, there’s a new ratings king in town. With a reality show flair and the potential for a nonfiction dystopian movie trilogy, American government is making a big splash on the “OMG! WTF?” scene.
With such intense, fast-moving plot lines and difficult-to-stomach developing themes, there’s a lot of pressure on news anchors, pundits and even current affairs-based comedy shows to both keep us informed and hold our attention.
Longtime political junkies and first time voters are equally locked in and anxiously watching critics calling the action with as-yet-unheard-of commentary like, “Hey, we’re pretty sure that’s illegal.” The buzz even has super fans getting into things by hosting block parties for tens of thousands of viewers at a time.
And if you’re a discerning red-blooded American gay viewer in search of both the scoop and a potential heartthrob, look no further. Anderson Cooper’s been done, so to speak, so as new frontrunners emerge in an also-ran race to lock in gay fans, here are a few of our faves to look at… errr… watch and listen to:
American Horror Story: This Time It’s Real has so much steam behind it that it was picked up for a four-year stint across all viewing platforms. The hype is unprecedented, but which broadcast is really vying for gay male audiences? 22 | 2.22.17
JAKE TAPPER Atlanta staple CNN is making its mark by reprising the role of Miranda Priestly from The Devil Wears Prada with stunning performances by this veteran newsman. His intense, no-nonsense interview style could give even the most bitter queen life.
Whether he’s reminding Kellyanne Conway of actual facts like “the Earth is round,” or just recapping events of the day, Tapper’s delivery and Hey Daddy vibe make the best of us daydream about getting a stern talking-to. VAN JONES Even though he doesn’t have his own show, we also have to give CNN props for bringing us the intelligent eye-candy that is Jones. If watching the Yale Law School educated Jones firing on all cylinders doesn’t get your motor running, we really don’t know what to tell you. DAVID MUIR ABC News is definitely a contender in wooing over a large gay fan-base, thanks in no small part to this evening anchor with worldwide notoriety. He even conducted Trump’s first post-inaugural interview, which included a variety of “alternative facts” and plenty of previews for train wrecks of the future.

Hot Newsies, Continued
Jake Tapper
That’s all fantastic, but have you seen Muir’s selfies? If he’s trying to get our attention with those sexy jeans and t-shirt pics, mixed with designer suit looks, well… #AchievementUnlocked. THOMAS ROBERTS Definitely don’t count MSNBC out of the hot newsie game. Of all there is to #resist these days, the hunky-gay goodness of this out gay reporter is not one of them. You may be familiar with his solid news anchor demeanor and willingness to share workout tips (and pics, we are not mad about the workout pics), but did you know his reporting once saved the lives of a bunch of puppies? It’s true, and he even has an Emmy to prove it! The only thing Roberts seems to be missing is a photo shoot in superhero tights. May Sweeps is just around the corner, so we’ll keep our fingers crossed that he pulls through on that one. Do it for your country and your gays, Thomas.
Van Jones
TREVOR NOAH While they may not be considered a formal news outlet, Comedy Central is getting in on the action by making it impossible to ignore this guy’s smile and quit-witted political snark. That sexy South African accent has us fully invested in whatever hot take he has to offer. Noah took over the helm of The Daily Show after Jon Stewart’s departure and, though he’s had some bumps in the road, we’re excited watching him make the show his own.
David Muir CARLOS MAZA The bigger well-known outlets may bring the heat, but don’t sleep on those online platforms. Vox.com now features the work of this young rising-star. During the most recent season of The Election Chronicles: A Hunger Games Story, Maza put together amazing video projects for Media Matters.
Trevor Noah
Carlos Maza 24 | 2.22.17
Now he’s delivering his own brand of queer insight and talent to the Vox stage and We. Are. Here. For. It. All of it. Between his brains, charm, clearly constructed progressive takes, unapologetically gay attitude and good looks, we recommend keeping an eye on this guy.

ABC’S NEW MINISERIES WHEN WE RISE AIMS FOR GAY HISTORY EVENT OF THE YEAR Gus Van Sant and Dustin Lance Black don’t aim for basics with their new miniseries “When We Rise.” The two, who worked together on the Oscar-winning film “Milk,” aims to sketch the decades-long history of the LGBT movement starting with Stonewall in the late ‘60s in their latest collaboration. Set your DVRs. The miniseries starts Feb. 27 on ABC and runs through March 3. Based on activist [and Harvey Milk acolyte] Cleve Jones’s 2016 memoir “When We Rise: My Life in the Movement,” the miniseries has a dream cast. Look for appearances by Guy Pearce, Mary-Louise Parker, Michael Kenneth Williams, Rachel Griffiths, Rosie O’Donnell, Whoopi Goldberg, Carrie Preston, Denis O’Hare and David Hyde Pierce. Van Sant directs the first two hour episode, while Dee Rees (“Pariah”), Thomas Schlamme, and Black himself – who also wrote the screenplay – oversee subsequent episodes.
TIME TO ‘RISE’ UP BY JIM FARMER
26 | 2.22.17
Cast members Jonathan Majors and Emily Skeggs were in Atlanta for a screening of the first episode during SCAD’s aTVfest. We spoke to them about the show and their realizations as young people of today while filming. “I didn’t know that 40 years ago you could be fired for being gay,” Skeggs says. “It is not taught. We are in a time where it is imperative that we understand how these rights were won, and I don’t think a lot of young people know. Growing up in New York, I was aware of the AIDS crisis and aware of a lot

‘Rise Up’, Continued
of things, but the history is not taught.” Skeggs plays Roma Guy, a young lesbian social justice worker who winds up in San Francisco in the early ‘70s, while Majors plays Ken Jones, an African-American war veteran and Christian who joins the gay liberation movement. Austin McKenzie plays author Cleve Jones, a Quaker from Arizona who realizes he is gay. As the three grow older (with Mary-Louise Parker as the older Roma, Michael Kenneth Williams the older Ken Jones, and Guy Pearce the older Cleve Jones), they become leaders. Producers wanted Skeggs, but Majors had to go the traditional audition route. “I was in school (at Yale’s School of Drama), and Gus and Lance pulled me out of my final year,’ he recalls. “Lance later Skyped me, and said ‘you got it.’” Majors was familiar with Stonewall but learned a lot he did not know while making the miniseries and talking to the real life Joneses. “The education I got from speaking to Cleve Jones and Ken Jones was mind blowing about what was happening to these people in the ’70s, what was happening in the community, and what they were fighting for.” 28 | 2.22.17
Skeggs, who also spent time with her real life counterpart, feels Roma was selfless in her work and avoided the spotlight. “She’s been fighting for social justice her entire life, and she is still fighting – for women’s rights, LGBTQ rights and human rights as a whole,” Skeggs says. “She is someone who you might not necessarily have heard her name before, and that is because she is all about the work. She barely uses the word ‘I.’ She uses the word ‘we.’ … She is tirelessly dedicated to working towards social justice.” Both performers are proud to be involved in an LGBT-positive project. “It felt like we were an extension of the movement,” says Majors. “Cleve said, ‘one struggle, one fight.’ As an artist, I jump on that. These guys are up against the ropes. If one person is down, we are all down, whether it is Ferguson, or Orlando.” “When We Rise” debuts on ABC February 27 and runs through March 3.

What if he says he’s negative and doesn’t know he’s actually positive? You’re still in charge of your own status behaviors.
Hey, Daddy! A friend of mine was recently diagnosed with HIV, and I couldn’t be angrier. I haven’t spoken to him since he told me, and I’m considering just letting the friendship die on the vine. I mean, it’s a terrible tragedy, but ihe knew how to prevent it. Don’t I deserve friends who are smarter?
Still a Touch Indignant with a Grain of Moral Anger Dear STIGMA:
HEY,
DADDY!
TRUTH, LIES AND HIV Hey, Daddy!
True friends love each other unconditionally, and they stick around, not bolt in tough times. Let’s assume you’re scared and not a jerk. Your buddy is going to be OK once he gets a handle on his situation, so the only “terrible tragedy” is leaving him stranded. Whether you approve or not, there are reasons guys might stray from safer sex. Condoms can be cumbersome and distinctly not sexy. The heat of the moment, safe-sex fatigue or recreational substances might also influence decision-making. Maybe your friend is even depressed or unworthy to bother with safe sex.
Things are hot and heavy, and all the clothes are off. We’re dirty-talking up a storm all the way up to the brink, and he stops me for a second then changes his mind. We do the deed and he leaves.
You’re right about one thing, though: Be angry. At HIV, not at your friend.
Then it hits me, what if he’s HIV positive and didn’t tell me? Help!

Talk Of Orgasm Led Accidentally To Exposure Dear TOO LATE: There’s no use being flabbergasted if you never directly asked the question.
DADDY LOVES HIS BOYS
Yes, poz guys should disclose their status, and so should neg guys to the best of their knowledge, but only you can protect you, and that means having “the talk” before the dirty talk. Put it out there, and get back to what you really want to talk about.

ARIES (Mar. 21 – Apr. 19):
LIBRA (Sep. 23 – Oct. 22):
Is cooperation more trouble than it’s worth? Your colleagues may feel the same way about you. Focus on improving your technical and interpersonal skills. Things will improve soon. Build a track record you can be proud of.
A flirtation with a co-worker or an exercise buddy could turn into something serious, unless you take it too seriously. Let it be fun and light. You both need some fresh air and fun, and if that’s all it is, that’s OK, too.
TAURUS (Apr. 20 – May 20):
SCORPIO (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21):
Venus coming home to Taurus opens you up to new dreams, ideas and romances. Stay within your budget, but let all other limits and constraints fly to the wind. Sharing your ideals and dreams will boost your allure.
As you get over being cranky and critical of your friends, how many do you have left? Getting rid of annoying twits may improve your life, but you probably still have some fences to mend. Make time for the folks who really matter.
GEMINI (May 21- Jun. 20):
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21):
Wild impulsive ideas can lead to true love or add some juice to an existing relationship. Confess your wildest hopes and some will be fulfilled. Think ahead, though! Life gets crazy next week. Pay attention to details.
Family ties or work in your community can strengthen a foundation for your career. Thing seem to be backsliding now. Recalculate your direction. That will take a few weeks yet. Don’t fret over immediate results. Keep your eye on the long run.
CANCER (Jun. 21- Jul. 22):
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19):
Be helpful, kind and supportive, but bending over backwards for others will just get you a sore back. Open-mindedness is good, but study basic premises before adopting entire philosophies. You will be heard, so think before speaking!
Why do siblings or neighbors drive you crazy? It’s not about you. Work to understand and be sympathetic to their problems. On a power surge right now, you can afford to be generous.
LEO (Jul. 23 – Aug. 22):
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18):
You’re too sexy for your shoes, too sexy for your lover, too sexy for your job. Tone down the charm and charisma at least a little bit. Others can easily make it out to be more than you intended, arousing jealousy and harassment suits.
Try not to take yourself, your ideas or your sex life too seriously. Dissatisfaction drives the search for improvement; an open mind, some humility and a sense of humor will help you succeed. The comforts of home help you keep balanced.
VIRGO (Aug. 23 – Sep. 22):
PISCES (Feb. 19 – Mar. 20):
Your naughty mouth can get you into trouble, delicious or otherwise. Tell the one you love what you’d really like to do when you’re alone together. It could do wonders for your relationship.
“Brilliant” financial ideas will soon prove to need correcting. You probably have a good start to a plan, though it needs time and work. Don’t act prematurely! Listen to your partner’s suggestions politely, but your friends really have the better insights.
