It is a part-time, 25 hours per week, position. The NexGen Coordinator will work with an activist advisory board to maintain and create new ministry among Jr. Hi. and High School Youth (FLY) and among millennials. If you are interested in this job, please contact the school office (580-762-9950) or come by to pick up an application. Our board would love to interview and talk over your ideas and ours. Requirements: Should be a member of First Lutheran or would consider membership. Be versed in Lutheran teaching and adhere to our confessions and practices. TAX STATEMENT: If you would like a printout of your payments to First Lutheran during 2018 for tax purposes, you can print them off yourself by logging into your FastDirect account, click on “Finance” on the top, then click on “tax report” on the left. Now click on the button that says “2007”, change it to the calendar year that you need, and then click “tax year printout”. It will bring up a printable page complete with our tax i.d. number. (This report includes school-related expenses only; summer daycare tax statements must be requested from Ms. Heidi in Daycare.). If you have problems, you can call the office and we can print statements for you as well. Not all payments to FLS are tax deductible, and you should contact a tax advisor to find out what can be written off, and what cannot. THE CHESS CLUB RETURNS! The Ponca City Chess Club at First Lutheran School is back! They will meet every 2nd and 4th Wednesday from 4pm-5:30pm in the basement of the Early Childhood Building. We invite you to come and bring a friend! The club is open to all students in Ponca City, grades 1st through 12th. All levels of experience are welcome! The club is in need of additional adults who can play to pair up with children in attendance. ADDITIONAL SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY: THANKS to a Ponca Business that wanted a large tax break, we received a donation through the Oklahoma Opportunity Scholarship program (www.osfkids.org) and we can share it with our school families. Participating donors and sponsors are eligible for state tax income credits and charitable contribution deductions when taxpayers itemize their deductions. Under Oklahoma’s program, a tax credit of 50 percent is offered for donations to Scholarship Granting Organizations (SGOs) such as OSF, and a 75 percent tax credit for equal pledge amounts for two consecutive years. Credits are capped at $100,000 for qualified business entities, $2,000 for taxpayers filing a joint tax return and $1,000 for individual tax filers. We are off to a great start on our Chapel offering for The New Life Trails. We have collected over $40.00. We are also collecting canned food for the church food pantry for the 100 th day of school. They've all settled in nicely with our class. Book orders are due this Friday! We've wrapped up letters B,E,&R. Our new letter cluster is L,K,&U. We're working hard on handwriting and pencil grips. Please give your kiddos opportunities at home to work with their hands; playdoh, scissors, coloring, etc. This will improve their fine motor skills tremendously. Letters have been sent home about conferences, our 100th day of school, and replenishing our snack stash. Also, please be sure to check folders each Wednesday. I'm still waiting for a few report cards to be turned in. Our Bible words for the week are "I trust in you, O Lord" Psalm 31:14. KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Miller: It is so great to be back into the swing of things! Your kindergarten children are becoming awesome readers, thank you for letting me share this! Parents please keep working on the third 9 week sight words along with the first and second 9 week words. Also, please keep reading and reading! The more your child reads the better they will get. FIRST GRADE – Mrs. Birnbaum: Memory verse for Friday is John 3:16 - For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. This verse is a little longer, so please make sure that you are working on it at home. Our 100th day of school will be on Tuesday, Jan.29. I would like for each child to bring 100 food items for our trail mix (any kind of cereal, marshmallows, M&M's, raisins, pretzels, anything you can think of!) These items can start being brought in next week. Also, for the 100th day of school, the ECC classes are collecting 100 cans of nonperishable food items for our Church pantry. Our Chapel offering for the 3rd quarter is going to New Life Trails. I want to encourage you parents to make sure that you keep working with your child with their reading. Each week, new phonic skills are introduced. Please make sure that you are doing the reading homework each night to help ensure their success. Blessings on your week! SECOND GRADE – Mrs. Powell: Happy Winter! I'm thankful for heated spaces on these very cold days. We had a wonderful trip to the Science Museum of Oklahoma. Thank you all for sharing your day with us. I was proud of the children (and parents) for being shining examples of Jesus' love. We mourn with Tripp and his family at the death of his grandfather. You're in our prayers. Report cards went home last week and need to be signed and returned. Please let me know if you have questions or concerns. Book orders are due Friday, January 25. Thank you for your help with memory work. This Thursday we will say the second commandment and meaning. Each child has a copy in their planner to practice at home. THIRD GRADE – Mrs. Steichen: Thank you everyone who came and drove for us last week on our field trip. I am so happy to hear everyone had a wonderful time!! Now, on to our new quarter A.R. goals. This week: Reading, Spelling, and Memory all due on Friday. New week will be a review week for spelling, we will also be starting a new chapter book. So no Reading test or paragraph for awhile. Social Studies: We are still working on an in class project. We hope to finish these by Friday. Science: We are took a test today, and will move on to a new Unit on sound. Have a wonderful week! FOURTH GRADE – Mrs. Sibley: We had a great first day of long division with remainders! Praise God! Continue to help the kids with the details, process and questions kids have to ask themselves with long division. Following -3-
directions is a good practice to have. They can do it! Keep practicing math facts and concepts. This helps to ensure that we have speed and accuracy for more difficult math problems, like the long division we are now doing. We are now really ramping up since we are working on being fifth graders and preparing for the future. Keep reading for AR & Book It. Book orders that went home are due by the 23rd. Middle school through high school students are welcome to join us for some fun and fellowship! We will meet each Wednesday evening from 5:30-7 in the FLS gym. Parents are invited to join our 5:30 Bible study during this time. Hope to see you all there, and bring a friend or two!! Mrs. Harbeson: Happy Wednesday! I hope your week has been treating you well! Things are moving right along in middle school...permission slips for second semester student council representatives came home today. If your student would like to be in the stuco election next week, please have the slip returned to me with both parent and student signatures by this Friday. In language, all classes have taken their first spelling and vocabulary tests, are finishing their new year's resolutions' 5 paragraph themes, and reading their 3rd quarter books. All classes will have another vocab quiz this Friday. 7th grade will start their next fundraiser soon. More info coming soon. Ms. Pacey: Happy Wednesday! We had the opportunity to compete in round 1 of OSSM's math competition, An Awesome Contest. Every grade competes and I get to recommend four students to go on to round 2, two from combined 7th and 8th grades and two from 6th grade. Contestants get to tour OSSM's campus and compete against middle school students from across the state. Algebra is creating equations for linear functions from slope, y-intercept, or points. PreAlgebra is working with the properties of exponents to simplify monomials. Course 1 and Course 2 are both converting between fractions, decimals, and percents. Have a fantastic week! Mr. Covert: We’ve finished our first full week after break! I hope everyone is back into a routine as we work through this quarter. Classes are moving right along. 8th grade is discussing the battles of the Civil War, working through the early ones right now. In 7th grade, we’ve moving into North and South Europe before we take a class vote on what part of our world to study after that. As for 6th grade, we’re working our way through the Roman Empire. 7th grade parents, our next fundraising opportunity will be February 1-3, with a youth basketball tournament. First Lutheran Church and School collects BoxTops for Education, empty or full ink and toner cartridges, cell phones, other small electronic devices like tablets, iPods and Kindles (sorry--no desktops), laptops, charging cords, etc! Do you throw away ink or toner cartridges @ work? Do you still have some broken flip phones/IPad’s/laptops lying around that you’re tired of dusting? Those ring binders/tissue boxes that you use at home may have BoxTops points on the labels! Please send all of these items to school with your child or drop them off at the school office, and we can use the proceeds/points from these companies to purchase playground equipment, get discounts on our toner/ink needs, get cash back to fund class parties, etc… which all helps to keep your costs down!
