Cardinal Shoutout!
Kinley Brown (2nd) and Nate Patel (8th) won in their age group in the Ponca Elks Hoop Shoot! Only 6 students represented Ponca at the NW District Contest on Saturday, Jan 20. Trinity Burden (6th) earned her black belt last month! Congratulations on your work, effort, and perseverance. Tanisha Patel (5) is a peaceful, quiet child. She is always respectful and courteous. She’s also a diligent, hard worker. Kaegan Reid (5) is a loving child. She is kind to her teacher and classmates. She is always willing to lend a hand, and always has a hug for her teacher, especially when she senses one is needed. Dalton Turnipseed (5) is a joy to have in the classroom! He is funny and always totally respectful. I love the way he volunteers answers in our class. Our class is definitely richer because Dalton T is in it.

MINI CHEER- We are welcoming PK-6th graders to join our cheer squad for a week, perform at a pep rally with us, and cheer at a basketball game! Sign up for some fun! You will learn a dance and a cheer and get to do some stunts, jumps, and yelling! Clinic starts Feb. 5 and ends with a performance on Feb. 8. Complete the attached form and return it to the office as soon as possible. FREDDY’S NIGHT! First Lutheran School will have Freddy’s night on Wednesday, February 7 from 3:30 to 8:30 p.m. All you have to do is have dinner/dessert at Freddy’s! When the cashier is ready to take your order, tell them you are there in support of First Lutheran School, and Freddy’s will donate a portion of your purchase to the school! Tell your friends, family, neighbors, and complete strangers. It doesn’t cost you anything more than the cost of your food!
Valentine’s Flower Gram!: Send someone a flower this Valentine's Day to let them know you are thinking about them. You can purchase them in the front office or from me, Mrs. Hanson. An order form is attached to the Chatter. The flowers with your message will be delivered to them on Valentine’s Day. Proceeds benefit the FLS Cheer Foundation.
2-PAYMENT TUITION REMINDER: If you opted to pay your tuition for the year in two payments, the second half payment is due 1 week from today…January 31. If you need to switch to a monthly plan for the second semester, please contact the office.
TRIP TO CAMBODIA: Many of our classes are going on an online trip to Cambodia to see how mission work is being done there by Lutherans; have your students told you what Cambodian’s eat and what their houses look like?! An offering box was being sent home with your child to help with this mission experience. Please return it with their offerings by the end of the month. SCHOOL OFFICE—TAX STATEMENTS: If you would like a printout of your payments to First Lutheran during 2017 for tax purposes, you can print them off by logging into your FastDirect account, scroll down to the bar that says “2007 Tax Year Printout”, change the year to 2017, and click the box that has “Tax Year Printout” in it. Alternatively, you can request a tax statement from the office by calling 580-762-9950 or sending a FastDirect email request to Connie Erickson. This will include school-related expenses only; summer daycare tax statements must be requested from daycare by sending a FastDirect email to Heidi Daley or calling daycare at 580-762-1124. Not all payments to FLS are tax deductible, and you should contact a tax advisor to find out what can be written off, and what cannot.
SNOW DAY?:
In the event that school may be cancelled due to inclement weather, we follow Ponca City Public Schools schedule FOR WEATHER-RELATED CANCELLATIONS ONLY. Listen to your radio during the cancellation announcements, and if Ponca City Public Schools are cancelled, First Lutheran will be out, also; however, there will NOT be a separate announcement for First Lutheran. This only applies to weather-related cancellations; at all other times, follow the First Lutheran School Calendar. If you need a new calendar, go to www.fastdir.com/flcspc, click on the “links” tab on the left, and then click on “2017-2018 Calendar”, or stop by the school office for a new one. BASKETBALL HOME GAME SEASON PASSES for Varsity and JV games are for sale in the office. (Season Passes are not good for tournament games.) They are $20 for adults, $15 for Senior Citizens/Church Members, and $10 for Students. "God created the world out of nothing, and so long as we are nothing, He can make something out of us." - Martin Luther PRINCIPAL – Mr. Birnbaum: Time is flying and plans are being made for the new year. Re-enrollment papers will be coming out in February and all grades will be open to the public beginning March 1st. We pray that you feel blessed by the leadership training that we are providing your child to succeed in their future. PRE-KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Kelly/Mrs. Colvin: Happy Birthday Ikem! Our 100th day of school is Friday! Please remember to send your 100 trail mix items. Our class has 20 cans/boxes for the 100 days of school can collection for the church pantry. You can bring those items by Friday. We will count them on Friday morning. Our Valentine party will be on Wednesday, February 14th. Look for the note in backpacks today. We are going to Cambodia for an online field trip this week. Our chapel offering is going to missionaries in Cambodia. We are also collecting new or gently used tennis -- 2 --
shoes. Our Bible words this week are Go and make disciples of all nations. Matthew 28:19 We are learning the letter "F" this week and the number "12" and "100". Have a Blessed week! KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Miller: Welcome back Taani and Tia! We have missed you! It is also good to have the people who were sick back! Micah, we are sorry you broke your wrist. This Friday will be 100 days of school and everyone needs to bring a special show & tell of 100 small items in a baggie like 100 m&m's or 100 bits of cereal, 100 buttons, 100 marbles, etc. Also, if you haven't brought cans yet we are collecting them in the ECE building and will count them on Friday to 100 (we hope). Have a fantastic week! FIRST GRADE – Mrs. Birnbaum: Memory verse for Friday is 1Timothy 1:15 - Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. Friday is our 100th day of school! Please bring in your canned goods so we can reach our goal of 100 cans for our church pantry. Also bring your 100 items for our trail mix. Friday is also show and tell. Blessings on your week! SECOND GRADE – Mrs. Powell: Cold winter greetings on a very windy day! I'm thankful for a warm home and warm clothes to wear and a warm indoor place to work. God is good. We're doing well. Encourage your child to keep reading. Memory work for Friday is the Fourth Commandment and Meaning. A little help at home is very beneficial. Remember that we will need shoe boxes for February 2. We're enjoying our tour of Cambodia. Share generously with your offerings to assist in the mission efforts there. Blessings! THIRD GRADE – Mrs. Steichen: Where did that nice weather go? Hope everyone enjoyed their time outdoors. This week: Spelling: Review words unit 3. Reading: NO test or paragraph; we have started our next chapter book. Ask your child what they think of it so far. A.R. we are cruzin though this quarter, the end will be here before we know it. Please ask your child where they are with their goals. Book Reports: Please be on the lookout for our next report. I will send it home this week or early next. Memory: 8th Commandment and its meaning. FOURTH GRADE – Mrs. Sibley: I am thankful that we are all safe and sound with the weather ever changing. Keep up the good work reading for AR & Book It. It is very rewarding when you make your goal. Log on to see current progress! Make sure that you read the last Friday Letter about our Valentine’s Day Box Decorating Contest. You don’t want to miss out on great prizes. Congratulations to Lauren K, London Lynn, and London B for participating in the Geography Bee today. We are very proud of you, and your effort. Remember to show all work on your math assignments, especially with long division. We have our S.S. ch test tomorrow, & our states and capitals test on Friday. Continue to work on being amazing 4th graders and giving the great prep for 5th grade as we ramp into routine. Blessings! FIFTH GRADE – Mrs. Schatte: Fifth graders are busy learning many new things in class. Subjects are definitely getting harder, as we're into the meat of the material instead of reviewing. If you read my Fast Direct Bulletin Board faithfully, you will notice some concerns I'm having at this point. Students overall need to put in more diligent study time at home. Review has become necessary, not just a suggestion. Please view your child's grades online. Fast Direct is an awesome way to stay abreast of your child's progress. I assigned country reports Monday. This is a major social studies grade for 3rd quarter. Your child received directions on how this report is to be done. This is an out-of-class project. Most of the research will be done at home. Therefore, planning will need to be done to see it through. Parents, your child will need your guidance as well as mine on this report. You will need to see that your child gets to the library, as the computer cannot be the only source for this report. I am encouraged because many students are excited about getting started. Thank you for working with me to ensure that your child gets the best education possible.
MIDDLE SCHOOL ATTENTION 8TH GRADE BASKETBALL AND CHEER PARENTS!: Please meet Mrs. Harbeson in the south hallway next to the gym at 6:15 sharp on Monday, January 29. She will get you lined up and go over last minute instructions. Also, please look for a FastDirect from Mrs. Harbeson with more information on 8th grade night. Mrs. Harbeson: Greetings! I hope you all are doing well! We're plugging along here in middle school. We continue to pray for everyone who is or has been sick. At this time of the year, it is so important to take extra good care of ourselves. Be sure to get plenty of sleep, eat good healthy meals, and wash your hands often! We will be electing our second quarter student council members on Thursday and will be starting our stuco activities for the semester. Mid-- 3 --
quarter reports are next Wednesday - if you can believe that! Please stay on top of all your assignments as this is the best way to maintain passing grades! As always, I'm available for tutoring and extra help on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30-4:30, during our daily study halls from 2:00-2:30, and any day (except Friday) after school. Blessings on the rest of your week! Mrs. Hanson: All classes are still working through their chapters, doing activities, completing section reviews and other work. All classes will also have a chapter content quiz this Friday. Happy Birthday Gabby! Jan. 25 Mrs. Pacey: Happy Wednesday! We are well into the third quarter. We are learning a little about Charles Babbage and Lady Ada Lovelace who are praised as the father of modern computing and the woman who created the first computer program. We also have tests coming up. PreAlgebra has a test Friday, Algebra will have a test Tuesday, and 7th grade has just completed their first test of the quarter. Mr. Covert: Another week is in the books! I hope everyone is doing well and staying healthy despite all the bugs going around. We’re keeping all those who’ve gotten sick in our prayers here! This week, things are a little bit different in my class. Lutheran Hour Ministries does an online mission trip every year, and this year, they are focusing on the country of Cambodia, in Southeast Asia. The focus on history, geography, and of course the ministry of the Gospel means it checks all the boxes for my class, and so I’ll be leading the students in each of my classes through that online mission trip this week. It’s very exciting to get to see how people in other cultures live, and how our ministry adapts to be able to reach out to those people and bring them to Christ. This week is also the Geography Bee, at 10 AM Wednesday morning! The winner of the school bee will take a test to attempt to qualify for the state bee, with the winner of that one going on to represent Oklahoma at the national competition in Washington, DC! I’m ready to see the students show off their knowledge of the world! 7th grade has a fundraiser coming up next week, with another basketball tournament being hosted here. I hope to have a sign-up sheet ready to go by Wednesday (just waiting for a couple more teams to fill out the bracket), and I’ll send out that sign-up sheet over FastDirect the night after I finish it, so be ready to sign up! I pray that God continues to bless our school family this week as we move on through January in Him. Blessings on your week!
