Churches in more than 100 countries around the world will hand out the shoebox gifts and will teach the recipients of the gifts we send, about God’s Greatest Gift: Jesus. You can choose how you participate: 1. You can donate money towards the shipping of the boxes; a gift of $9 will cover the shipping of a shoebox. 2. You can donate a shoebox full of gifts. See attached flyer for instructions, but basically, stop by the office, pick up an empty shoebox, and load it up with 1 wow item like a doll, stuffed animal, or soccer ball with an air pump. Also include other gifts like school supplies, toys, and/or non-liquid personal items. (Toys should not require batteries.) Include a personal note, photo, and/or a self-addressed return envelope if you wish, and return the box to the school office. Items that cannot be sent in the Shoebox: Candy; toothpaste; used or damaged items; war-related items such as toy guns, knives, or military figures; chocolate or food; seeds; fruit rolls or other fruit snacks; drink mixes (powdered or liquid); liquids or lotions; medications or vitamins; breakable items such as snow globes or glass containers; aerosol cans. You may wrap the box, but wrap it so that the gifts inside can be inspected without removing the wrapping. Indicate on the box whether the gift is for a boy or a girl, and the age bracket: 2-4, 5-9, or 10-14. 3. Pray for the child(ren) who will receive our boxes. 4. All (or any combination) of the above. For suggestions on what to pack in the shoeboxes, visit: https://www.samaritanspurse.org/operation-christmas-child/pack-a-shoe-box/
Sometimes children will reply to the boxes that have been sent. If you choose to include a personal note with your name, we encourage you to list the school address of 1104 North 4th Street, Ponca City, OK, 74601 as your return address. Any communications that we receive will be forwarded on to the appropriate family. Please have any donations, monetary or otherwise, to the school office by October 31, 2017. -- 1 --

"Do not act as the world and people desire but act as God desires." - Martin Luther PRINCIPAL – Mr. Birnbaum: Martin Luther's life exhibits high drama and intrigue because of his "war" with the church, achievements, and faults of harsh and vulgar language directed at opponents. I will try to share some of his 95 theses of debate with the church and some famous quotes in the weeks to come. If you would like to read some simple stories about Martin Luther, we can let you check out this month's issue of "The Lutheran Witness" magazine. LIBRARY – Mrs. Ware: Happy October! Students are already getting excited about BOOK FAIR next month! If you are a parent/grandparent who would like to volunteer to help with book fair this year, I would love to have you! Please contact me through Fast Direct or call and let me know if you would like to help with this very special yearly event. FIRST GRADE – Mrs. Birnbaum: Memory verse for Friday is Psalm 23:1 - The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. Book orders are due to me or online by Friday. Next Tuesday, Oct. 17 is our field trip to Rustic Roots Pumpkin Patch. We will leave at 9:15. Our next field trip will be on Tue, Nov. 7 to Cowley College to see the play of Mary Poppins. Another date to remember is Sun, Nov. 5. First Lutheran Church is planning a Friendship Sunday and would like to invite all families. Remember that the second graders are invited to the Correll's home for a Halloween party this Saturday. RSVP to 330-620-6307. We're nearly through a quarter of this school year. Time is flying! Blessings! THIRD GRADE – Mrs. Steichen: Our final week of this quarter! If you haven't been on to check grades, please do so. Let me know if you have any questions. I am a bit behind on entering grades, so please keep checking. This week: Spelling, Reading Test on Friday. Next week, we will have a Math, Social Studies, and Science Test. I will make sure those are graded and corrected before the end of the week. Look for reviews this week to come home for these. Memory: We are on to New Testament books, next week Matthew - Titus is due. There is a link on FastDirect for the new song. Book Report: These are due on Friday!! I cannot wait to see them. Please let me know if you have any questions. New Homework Policy: We are getting in some bad habits with our homework, the new policy is if you child missing homework two times in one week, they will be given a detention. Please check planners nightly to see what your child should be doing for homework. Field Trip: if you have not turned in your permission slips for the pumpkin patch, please get that to me ASAP. If there is a time that works better, please give me some options. Have an amazing week with this cooler weather! FOURTH GRADE – Mrs. Sibley: Today we are at the Steam Show in Kansas. Scholars should be reading every night out of their AR books. The last day to make AR goals is October 17th. That’s less than one week! Nightly reading is necessary for AR success. Some have made their goals, some are so close to their goals, and some have lots of work to do this weekend. We will take our STAR Reading test for the 2nd Quarter after fall break. Results with new goals will go home after testing. Book orders are due Friday along with a printed note from Fast Direct Bulletin Board. I hope the Rose Hill Project that went home last week is going well. Remember we will only present the creation. Books Reports: Look for the appointment sheet for Parent Teacher Conference coming in the school mail soon. Parent Teacher Conferences will be the Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday after fall break. Blessings as we know that It Is Still All About Jesus! FIFTH GRADE – Mrs. Schatte: We're nearing the end of 1st Quarter. Can you believe it?! If you haven't checked FD for your child's grades recently, please do. I'd like everyone to finish strong. Having all work turned in on time, labeled correctly, and done accurately and neatly would certainly help improve the last grades of the quarter. Late work, sloppy work, and unlabeled papers drop grades quickly. I am here on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons until 4:00 to help students that may need extra help. Remember...next Wednesday is our field trip to the pumpkin patch. Please get your permission slip and money in ASAP. Thank you. Have a blessed week. Enjoy the cooler weather. I know I am! :)

Winter Dance, 7-9:30, Gym
STUDENT COUNCIL – Mrs. Harbeson: Middle School Winter Dance - Friday, Nov. 3, from 7:00 - 9:30, in the FLS gym The theme is "A Starry Night." The dress for this first dance of the year is dressy. Typically, girls wear dresses and boys wear nice pants with a button-up shirt and tie or a nice polo. Please do not wear ripped jeans, t-shirts, hoodies, shorts, etc. to the dance. Also, please follow the school's dress code. Dresses need to be an appropriate length, not too tight, and not strapless. Spaghetti straps (for the dance only) on dresses will be ok. (If you have any questions on appropriate dress for the dance, please contact Mrs. Harbeson. We encourage all students to attend the dance individually and meet up with friends once you are there. Over the years, some of the parents organize a class dinner at an agreed-upon restaurant before the dance. This would be a fun way for everyone to get together and grab some pictures and food before the dance begins. We will have snacks and punch at the dance, but you should definitely eat dinner before arriving. This dance, like all FLS dances, are for First Lutheran students only. We hope to see everyone there! MATH COUNTS – Ms. Pacey: MathCounts meets Wednesday’s and Friday’s after school in the math room until 4:15. Mrs. Harbeson: Hello! Aren't these cooler temperatures awesome?! Fall is my favorite time of the year . . . the crisp, refreshing air, the beauty of God's earth as the leaves begin to change...all these things remind me of God's blessings! I hope that as we enter into a busy time of the year, you can take a moment here and there to rest in God's presence and to thank him for the life that he has given you . . . no matter how busy you are! As we are wrapping up this first quarter of school, it is time for students to check their assignments and grades. If your teacher will allow you to, get in all missing assignments. Any grade is better than a "0"! I also want to remind students and parents that FLS offers free tutoring on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30-4:30 in my room. This is an excellent opportunity to work quietly if you just need to get homework done or if you want to read. You can also get extra help in any subject during this time. Besides getting help from the teachers, David Miller, an FLS alumni, is available for one-on-one instruction. He's awesome! There's no need to sign up; everyone is welcome. Just show up whenever you need! In language, students should be finishing up their AR book of choice and preparing to take the AR test. The last day to test for this book will be Wednesday, October 18. After the 18th has passed, I will be looking at the AR tests for the test score your student received on his AR book of choice. That grade will be entered into the grade book as a test grade. Unfortunately, if a student does not take the test on the book he or she chose to read (they told me their book titles about 4 weeks ago) I will have to put a "0" in the grade book. I don't want to do that! Be sure to get that book finished and then take your test! Thank you for your continued love and support . . . I love teaching at a school where we can pray for anything and everything anytime want! Please continue to pray for our church, school, teachers, students, and families. Blessings to you all on the rest of your week! Mrs. Harbo Mrs. Hanson: The end of the quarter is next week! That means conferences are coming up too. We will be having student led conferences this year. Yes, your child will be running the show. This is a chance for students to take ownership and pride in their education, work, and grades. Coming home will be a letter explaining how this will go along with a reflection completed by your student and your conference time. These need to be signed and returned by Friday, Oct. 13. CHEER COMPETITION! Your First Lutheran Spirit First Cheerleaders will be heading to competition NEXT Saturday, Oct. 21. We will be competing against many other Oklahoma teams at Frontier City. We would love for you to come support us. But wait... there's more! When you purchase admission to the competition, you also receive a full day pass to the rest of the park at Frontier City. You get to watch cheer and ride roller coasters for less than a normal day pass?! NO WAY! Can't wait to see y'all there! Before that though, you can come check out or progress and hard work at a "dress rehearsal" this Friday at 2:45 in the gym. The whole school will be in attendance! Bug Projects for 8th graders are due soon. I have changed the due date to Monday Oct. 16. Students will NOT be bringing a board full of bugs to school. We will be having a digital bug board this year. Students will use Prezi, an online application, to present their collection. They have been given a sheet of requirements for this digital board and have been introduced to Prezi. If they have any problems or questions about how to use Prezi, please send them my direction. They will add images of the bugs they have collected to Prezi along with the insects order and scientific name. They will show their Prezi Bug Board in class. -- 4 --
We are still going to make one big class collection. Student will receive extra credit for each of their bugs that get entered into the class collection. These do not have to be the biggest, most unique bugs (although we do want those). We need all bugs, even the most common and the smallest insects. They can bring insects they wish to submit to the class board simply in a container. They can bring as many as they wish. They can bring them as soon as they want to as long as they do not need them for their own personal projects any longer. I will choose the best specimen of any multiples. And we will pin them to a separate board here in class. Mrs. Pacey: The quarter is nearly over. Time has really flown. Every class has their chapter 2 test at the beginning of next week. Study and practice! Roll Tide! Mr. Covert: We’re getting close to the end of the first quarter! I hope and pray that everyone is doing well. The classes are continuing on from where we’ve been. In 8th grade, we started the week with DC presentations. We’ll be wrapping up the Federalist era this week, and then start in on the Jefferson administration and the changes the country faced during the turn of that century. 7th grade is working through Canada, and after that we will turn our sights to our southern neighbor. 6th grade is almost finished with the Israelites, and afterward we will move on to the ancient Greeks. 7th and 8th grade parents, just a reminder, the ButterBraid forms are due back on Tuesday, October 17! Remember to have those in by then! I pray that God continues to bless our school family as we go through this school year. Blessings on your week!
First Lutheran Church & School—Growing up into Jesus, Reaching out with Jesus, Walking together in Jesus ELIGIBILITY TO PARTICIPATE: With the approaching basketball season, please remember that students involved in extra-curricular activities will have their grade status evaluated at the beginning of every three weeks. A student who has a grade below 70% in any subject will be put on probation. During that time, the student will be given an opportunity to raise the grade above 69.9%. The student must take action to raise the grade. Failure to raise the grade will result in suspension from the extra-curricular activity until the next three week grade check. After the first probationary period, a student will be suspended from the extra-curricular activity when any grade drops below 70%. Suspensions are enforced and lifted on the first school day of the week. (Any students failing a subject on their report card will be suspended from extra-curricular activities until all grades are passing at the three week check point.) {Page 16 of the parent handbook}
