OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD: First Lutheran Church & School is participating in the Shoebox Gift program. Churches in more than 100 countries around the world will hand out the shoebox gifts and will teach the recipients of the gifts we send, about God’s Greatest Gift: Jesus. You can choose how you participate: 1. You can donate money towards the shipping of the boxes; a gift of $9 will cover the shipping of a shoebox. 2. You can donate a shoebox full of gifts. See attached flyer for instructions, but basically, stop by the office, pick up an empty shoebox, and load it up with 1 wow item like a doll, stuffed animal, or soccer ball with an air pump. Also include other gifts like school supplies, toys, and/or non-liquid personal items. (Toys should not require batteries.) Include a personal note, photo, and/or a self-addressed return envelope if you wish, and return the box to the school office. Items that cannot be sent in the Shoebox: Candy; toothpaste; used or damaged items; war-related items such as toy guns, knives, or military figures; chocolate or food; seeds; fruit rolls or other fruit snacks; drink mixes (powdered or liquid); liquids or lotions; medications or vitamins; breakable items such as snow globes or glass containers; aerosol cans. You may wrap the box, but wrap it so that the gifts inside can be inspected without removing the wrapping. Indicate on the box whether the gift is for a boy or a girl, and the age bracket: 2-4, 5-9, or 10-14. 3. Pray for the child(ren) who will receive our boxes. 4. All (or any combination) of the above. For suggestions on what to pack in the shoeboxes, visit: https://www.samaritanspurse.org/operation-christmas-child/pack-a-shoe-box/

Sometimes children will reply to the boxes that have been sent. If you choose to include a personal note with your name, we encourage you to list the school address of 1104 North 4th Street, Ponca City, OK, 74601 as your return address. Any communications that we receive will be forwarded on to the appropriate family. gifts. We received $30,000 this Summer from church members for 80 Chromebooks for all our upper grade students. Last week the ECC raised over $2,000 for St. Jude's hospital, and next week I hope to tell of all the Chapel Offerings collected this first quarter. I praise God for you all. LIBRARY – Mrs. Ware: Happy October! It's the time of year where we begin thinking about the annual Scholastic Book Fair. One of the biggest keys to its success is volunteers. I am in need of volunteers who are willing to help me set up the book fair, to help during special events, and most especially on our grandparent day events. I appreciate the help so very much, and look forward to speaking with you soon about the upcoming fair. Please contact me through FastDirect or through the office about volunteering. Thank you! DAYCARE – Ms. Heidi: Daycare will be open Thurs Oct. 18th for those that have signed up for fall break. WE WILL BE CLOSED FRIDAY OCT. 19TH. We still need swings in the daycare; if you have one you are not using, consider donating it to the Daycare. Thanks! PRE-SCHOOL – Mrs. Herard: Thank you Mrs. Kelly for organizing the Trike-a-thon. We all had a wonderful time and thank you to everyone that raised money for St. Jude's hospital. We are looking forward to our field trip next Wednesday to Rustic Roots in Lamont! Let's pray for beautiful weather. We plan to leave at 9:15. Don't forget a sack lunch and drink that can be thrown away. No school on the 18-19th for Fall Break. Check backpacks for Parent/Teacher conference times. I will work with you if that time is not convenient. This week our theme is Pumpkins and our letter is H. Blessings! PRE-SCHOOL – Mrs. Colvin: Boy it sure has turned colder! Be sure the children have their names in their jackets please. Wednesday we go to the Pumpkin Patch in Lamont! It is so much fun, the kids really enjoy it! We plan on leaving by 9:15 and finish around 2:00. Make sure your child has a sack lunch with a throw away drink. This week we will be learning about the Letter I and fall. Have a great week! PRE-KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Kelly: Rustic Roots field trip is tomorrow! Thank you to all that participated in the Trike-a-Thon. We raised over $2,000.00 for St. Jude Children's Hospital. Prize choice selection will be emailed or come home in the mail folder as soon as they receive our donations. Tomorrow is the last chapel offering for the Epilepsy Foundation. We have collected $270.00 so far. Wouldn't it be great if we could send them $300.00? Look for the note in the mail folder for information about our new offering for second quarter. Conferences are next Thursday and Friday; a reminder note is in folders today. Please check the time, and sign and return it to me. Our Bible words this week are, God says, "I am with you." Genesis 28:15 We are learning all about pumpkins this week. Have a wonderful Fall Break and Blessed Week! PRE-KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Heitman: This week we are discussing pumpkins as we prepare for our trip to the Pumpkin Patch! I pray everyone stays safe, healthy, and warm during Fall Break! May God use this time to strengthen us and restore health to those who have been sick. KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Miller: This week is "Fall Break" on Thursday the 18th and Friday the 19th (no school)! I hope everyone has a great long weekend! Our class would like to wish Striker a happy birthday on Sunday the 21st! Parent/teacher conferences are next week and the sign up sheet is in our room. I would like to say a thank you to all the parents that are driving and helping with our pumpkin patch field trip to Lamont on Wednesday. Have a wonderful week! FIRST GRADE – Mrs. Birnbaum: I can't believe that we are at the end of the 1st quarter! Parent/Teacher conference notes will be going out next week Monday. I'm looking forward to sharing your child's progress with you during next Friday's parent/teacher conferences. Enjoy the extra long break! Relax and do something memorable. Save the date on October 28. Our children will be singing at First Lutheran Church that day. Blessings! THIRD GRADE – Mrs. Steichen: Burr!! With this colder weather, please make sure you send your child with a coat. They will be going outside. Also, don't forget to write their name in it, so if it gets left we can return it to its owner. Next week: We are back to normal: spelling, reading, and math. Field Trip: If you have not turned in your money please get that to me ASAP. Christmas to those that would not have had an opportunity to have one, & to hear about Jesus. Get your boxes from the office, & look in the Chatter for more information. Our field trip to Walter’s Pumpkin Patch is on the 25th – be ready to leave by 8:00 am! I can’t wait to speak to each of us at Parent Teacher Conferences the week of the 22nd & we have a half day of school on the 26th. As the weather is making many changes, make sure kids are dressed appropriately for the weather. Have a great, safe, and relaxing Fall Break! FIFTH GRADE – Mrs. Schatte: We've almost made it to Fall Break! Next week we will have a regular schedule once again. We will take our last quiz over the regions of the U.S. We are almost done learning the commandments and meanings. I look forward to visiting with all of you at parent teacher conferences next week. MIDDLE SCHOOL Wednesday’s, 3:30 – 4:30, MathCounts & Friday’s during study hall

Wednesday’s, 5:30 – 7:00, Youth night in the gym! (details below)

"FLY" NIGHT TONIGHT! in the gym! Middle school through high school students are welcome to join us for some fun and fellowship! We will meet each Wednesday evening from 5:30-7 in the FLS gym. Parents are invited to join our 5:30 bible study during this time. Hope to see you all there, and bring a friend or two!! PATRIOT’S PEN PROGRAM: The Patriot’s Pen Program is a 300-400 word essay contest sponsored by the VFW and open to students in 6-8th grades, who are enrolled in a public, private, or parochial school or home study program in the U.S. and/or its territories. The deadline to submit an essay is October 31. See the office for more details. Mrs. Harbeson: Well, we've finally come to the end of our first quarter. It seems like school just started last week! Report cards will be handed out to students at our student/parent/teacher conferences that are set up for next week. You will receive your report card from the teacher that you're scheduled to visit first. I pray that you all have a restful and fun Fall Break, and I will see you next quarter! Blessings to you all! Mrs. Hanson: Thank you all so much for making me feel so special (not old) on my birthday. The kids decorated my classroom with memes, it was awesome! All classes are exploring their new content areas by moving through lab stations this week. At lab stations, students are introduced to information by reading it, writing it, exploring it, researching it, watching it, illustrating it, organizing it, and assessing it. After stations, students should have a really good working knowledge of the topic being studied. Conference letters went out last week and were due back with parent signatures on Friday. Students are preparing for conferences during school hours. They will get the chance to show what they are learning and some of their strengths while coming up with a plan to strengthen weaknesses and accomplish goals. A reminder note will go home with your family's conference time and schedule before the conference day. Ms. Pacey: We have just completed our budget project for 6th through 8th grade. Each student had different monthly paychecks and debts. They all worked hard to find reasonable housing, transportation, food, and other costs. We used Google Sheets to lay out our budgets so that we could see every monthly expense and the total cost per month. We defined wants and needs and ensured that each budget allowed for a few wants each month while also including savings. This was our first project for the year. Every class will have at least 4 projects total, one per quarter. Have a great Fall Break! Mr. Covert: We’ve reached the end of the first quarter! Time has really flown by so far this year. I hope everyone is doing well now that we’ve made it to this first milestone. Classes are finishing up what we need to before the break. 8th grade is wrapping up our unit on the first two presidents. In 7th grade, we’re looking at Canada, our northern neighbors. 6th grade is finishing up our unit on Israel, and taking a quick look at the Greeks to get us prepared for when we get back. I pray that God continues to bless our school family as we finish up quarter one and get set for the next one. Blessings on your week!

It's WORKING! It's WORKING! The ReplayIt App wasn’t working, but it’s back up and running now. If you previously uploaded some photo’s from this school year, please take a look and make sure they are still there, and re-upload them (please!), if not. If you haven’t uploaded any pictures yet, please do so! We need to start building pages for the yearbook, but we need your pictures to do that! Thank you!
