THE NED SHOW happened today at school! It is a character education program that centers around these three messages: Never Give Up, Encourage Others, Do Your Best. If you wish to purchase a yo-yo, they are for sale in the school office through Friday, 10/27. The Glow in the Dark Yo-Yo is $8, the Boomerang Yo-Yo is $10, and the Excelerator Yo-Yo is $15. You may also purchase a replacement string pack for $4, and a yo-yo holster for $5. A video of yo-yo instruction can be found at www.thenedshow.com/kidz . OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD: This year First Lutheran Church & School is participating in the Shoebox Gift program. Churches in more than 100 countries around the world will hand out the shoebox gifts and will teach the recipients of the gifts we send, about God’s Greatest Gift: Jesus. You can choose how you participate: -- 1 --

1. You can donate money towards the shipping of the boxes; a gift of $9 will cover the shipping of a shoebox. 2. You can donate a shoebox full of gifts. See attached flyer for instructions, but basically, stop by the office, pick up an empty shoebox, and load it up with 1 wow item like a doll, stuffed animal, or soccer ball with an air pump. Also include other gifts like school supplies, toys, and/or non-liquid personal items. (Toys should not require batteries.) Include a personal note, photo, and/or a self-addressed return envelope if you wish, and return the box to the school office. Items that cannot be sent in the Shoebox: Candy; toothpaste; used or damaged items; war-related items such as toy guns, knives, or military figures; chocolate or food; seeds; fruit rolls or other fruit snacks; drink mixes (powdered or liquid); liquids or lotions; medications or vitamins; breakable items such as snow globes or glass containers; aerosol cans. You may wrap the box, but wrap it so that the gifts inside can be inspected without removing the wrapping. Indicate on the box whether the gift is for a boy or a girl, and the age bracket: 2-4, 5-9, or 10-14. 3. Pray for the child(ren) who will receive our boxes. 4. All (or any combination) of the above. For suggestions on what to pack in the shoeboxes, visit: https://www.samaritanspurse.org/operation-christmas-child/pack-a-shoe-box/

Sometimes children will reply to the boxes that have been sent. If you choose to include a personal note with your name, we encourage you to list the school address of 1104 North 4th Street, Ponca City, OK, 74601 as your return address. Any communications that we receive will be forwarded on to the appropriate family. Please have any donations, monetary or otherwise, to the school office by October 31, 2017. FRIENDSHIP SUNDAY: YOU ARE INVITED! First Lutheran Church is sponsoring a Friendship Sunday on November 5 at 10:45. The students of the school will be singing at that service. Following the service, we'll have a potluck meal in the cafeteria (the church will provide the chicken; members will bring the sides). After lunch we'll have a competition with parents and children in relays, three-legged races, and the egg throw. Practice your skills and plan to join us. We hope to see you there. "Here I stand, I can do no other, so help me God. Amen." - Martin Luther's legendary quote PRINCIPAL – Mr. Birnbaum: The above quote is one of Martin Luther's most legendary quotes. It is from April 1521 almost 500 years ago. This was four months after Pope Leo X had excommunicated Luther from the Catholic church as a heretic. Luther stood before Emperor Charles V to defend what he had been teaching and writing. LIBRARY – Mrs. Ware: If you are a parent/grandparent who would like to volunteer to help with the book fair this year, I would love to have you! Please contact me through Fast Direct or call and let me know if you would like to help with this very special yearly event. PRE-SCHOOL – Mrs. Herard: What a busy week! Thanks to everyone that went on the field trip! I love getting to spend time outside of the classroom with families to relax and get better acquainted. Be sure to sign up this week for Parent/Teacher conferences. First report cards will be handed out and discussed. Check backpacks for the note regarding the upcoming Costume Party. Next week, the children will be signing in when they arrive in the morning. They will find "their" letter then write it beside their name on the sign in sheet. It will take slightly more time than usual until they get the hang of it. In January, they will begin writing in their whole first name. This week our theme is "Fall" and our letter is "I". Our thoughts and prayers are with Mrs. Kelly as she recovers from surgery this week. Enjoy your extra days off for Fall Break! PRE-KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Kelly/Mrs. Colvin: Thank you for your prayers, my surgery went well and I am resting at home. I already miss the kids! I heard the field trip was fun! Thanks to all the parents that went, drove others, and helped the day go smoothly! Parent/Teacher conference notes are in backpacks today. If your time doesn't work for you, let me know and we can reschedule. Our Costume Party is on Tuesday, October 31st at 2:30. Our class is collecting money/items to fill two shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child. We would like to fill one for a boy and girl our age, Please bring your items or money to us by October 31st. PreK Grandparents' Day will be on Monday November 20 th. There is a note in backpacks today. Please fill out the information and bring back to school by November 3rd. Our Bible words this week are, God is with you wherever you go. Joshua 1:9 We are learning about pumpkins this week. No school Thursday and Friday. Have a blessed Fall Break! KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Miller: Wow, it was so great seeing so many parents during our Field Trip on Tuesday. We had a great time! Thank you Mrs. Kelly for getting this trip ready! Please look in your child's "Monday Folder" for -- 2 --

Winter Dance, 7-9:30, Gym

STUDENT COUNCIL – Mrs. Harbeson: Middle School Winter Dance - Friday, Nov. 3, from 7:00 - 9:30, in the FLS gym The theme is "A Starry Night." The dress for this first dance of the year is dressy. Typically, girls wear dresses and boys wear nice pants with a button-up shirt and tie or a nice polo. Please do not wear ripped jeans, t-shirts, hoodies, shorts, etc. to the dance. Also, please follow the school's dress code. Dresses need to be an appropriate length, not too tight, and not strapless. Spaghetti straps (for the dance only) on dresses will be ok. (If you have any questions on appropriate dress for the dance, please contact Mrs. Harbeson. We encourage all students to attend the dance individually and meet up with friends once you are there. Over the years, some of the parents organize a class dinner at an agreed-upon restaurant before the dance. This would be a fun way for everyone to get together and grab some pictures and food before the dance begins. We will have snacks and punch at the dance, but you should definitely eat dinner before arriving. This dance, like all FLS dances, is for First Lutheran students only. We hope to see everyone there! Mrs. Harbeson: Greetings! I hope you all are doing well! Today marks the last day of the 1st quarter...it's hard to believe that we're getting ready to enter the Thanksgiving and Christmas season! (I hope I didn't just freak you out!) I've told the students that the second quarter will fly by and that it's super important to get all work done to the best of their ability right from the start. I'm looking forward to meeting with all the students and parents at our conferences next week. We'll get to reflect on the students' accomplishments and also discuss ways to improve. I pray that you all have a restful Fall Break. Blessings to you!

Mrs. Hanson: FALL BREAK! I hope you enjoy your few days off. If you are able to, come support your FLS cheerleaders at Frontier City this Saturday at 11:45 at our first competition! You can buy spectator tickets at a discounted price using the promo code CHEER at frontiercity.com We are really looking forward to Student-Led Conferences. Please make sure your family is prompt with your appointment time as we are meeting for a strict 10 minutes with each teacher to accommodate all families. The students have been preparing and practicing for their conference and know exactly what they will be discussing. Mrs. Pacey: We have just finished Chapter 2 in all classes and every class had a chance to make corrections during school today. Have a great Fall Break! Mr. Covert: The first quarter flew by this year! I pray that everyone gets some rest over fall break and comes back ready to roll when we kick off the second quarter. We’re just wrapping up a few loose ends before the break. 8th grade is talking about the Louisiana Purchase, which added our neck of the woods to the United States. In 7th grade, we’re heading south to talk about Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean Islands, which we’ll pick up with when we get back. As for 6th grade, we’re going to get an introduction to the Greek empire, and we’ll continue with them when we get back. I pray that God continues to bless our school family as we transition from first quarter to second quarter. Blessings on your week!

First Lutheran Church & School—Growing up into Jesus, Reaching out with Jesus, Walking together in Jesus ELIGIBILITY TO PARTICIPATE: With the approaching basketball season, please remember that students involved in extra-curricular activities will have their grade status evaluated at the beginning of every three weeks. A student who has a grade below 70% in any subject will be put on probation. During that time, the student will be given an opportunity to raise the grade above 69.9%. The student must take action to raise the grade. Failure to raise the grade will result in suspension from the extra-curricular activity until the next three week grade check. After the first probationary period, a student will be suspended from the extra-curricular activity when any grade drops below 70%. Suspensions are enforced and lifted on the first school day of the week. (Any students failing a subject on their report card will be suspended from extra-curricular activities until all grades are passing at the three week check point.) {Page 16 of the parent handbook}
