SCHOOL IS CLOSED but Day Care is open on Monday - February 20 for President's Day. ENROLLMENT TIME! Attached to last weeks’ Chatter were your enrollment papers for the 2017/2018 school year. Remember, at this time, enrollment is open to current church and school families. If you know a family new to First Lutheran School that is interested in enrolling, have them call the school office. To hold your students’ spot, be sure to return your enrollment forms and 1/3 enrollment fee, and have your enrollment fee paid in full by April 30. If you refer a family with a student in 1st – 5th grades, make sure that they list you as a referring family on their enrollment sheet! If they remain enrolled through the first semester, in January of 2018 you will receive a $200 credit towards your tuition account! Two families earned a $200 credit last month by referring friends! ENROLLMENT OPEN HOUSE: We are holding an Open House on Monday, March 6 and Tuesday, March 7 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. The teachers for PS3, Kindergarten, 2nd, 4th, 6th, and 8th will be specifically available on Monday, and the teachers from PS2, PK4, 1st, 3rd, 5th, & 7th will be available on Tuesday. If you know someone who is considering enrolling their student at First Lutheran School, invite them to attend one of these days for enrollment information. Be sure and tell them list your name as a referring family on the enrollment sheet! DAYCARE SIGNUPS FOR FEB 20TH: We have enough kids signed up, that daycare will be open on Monday for those who signed up. If you didn’t sign up, but now think you need it, contact daycare to see if there are any open spots. FLC&S YOUTH: Youth meets this Sunday, 5:15-6:30 at the youth house. We have a lot of exciting up-coming events and plans that we'll be firming up. PICTURE DAY: February 23 is Class Picture Day and Individual Spring Portrait Day. We will have a makeup day on February 24 for Individual Spring Pictures for any students absent on the 23rd. To order a class picture, fill out the form that came home with your students this week, attach a check, and return it to your student’s teacher before the 23rd. You do not need to order the individual spring portraits; pictures will automatically be taken on Thursday, and packets will be sent home next month for you to review and/or order. You can choose the background if you want, for your students’ pictures; the form for this was also sent home this week. Extras of both forms are available in the office. TALENT SHOW: Get your talent dusted off for the Talent Show coming up. Are you making your plans? We are! This year's talent show is March 31st at 6:30 p.m. Technical Dress Rehearsal is the 31st at 2:00 p.m. Auditions are March 22nd in the gym at 3:30 p.m. Talent show applications will be available in the classrooms next week. CALLING ALL GOLF LOVERS!!! CALLING ALL SCHOOL & GOLFER LOVERS!!! Pease mark your calendars for the next golf meeting - 03/06/17 in the fourth grade room at 4:30. Every $100 of Cardinal Classic Golf Tournament sponsorship with your child’s name on it is a chance to receive $200 off of your FLS current cost. SOCK HOP WRAP UP: Your FLS PTL would like to thank all our Cardinal families for coming out for a fun sock hop last weekend! Special thanks to Ryan Burkett and his band! Thank you too to David Birnbaum, Amanda Cain, Daisy Segura, Lori Shepherd, Susie Ware, and Deanna Warnecke for helping make it happen. $8,000 to Scholarship Fund - Thanks to the efforts of many people, the December Christmas Market raised over $3000 thru vendors and booths, $4000 in Conoco grants and another $1000 from Phillips grants. All of these monies have been given to the First Lutheran School scholarship fund. A sincere "THANK YOU" to Shirley Zimmerman and everyone who helped her in any way to make this fifth annual Christmas Market Oklahoma a great success. BOX TOPS – BOX TOPS! BOX TOPS! Save those Box Tops! Each one is equivalent to 10 cents so when we put them altogether we raise a good amount of money. If you would bag them in groups of 50, that would be helpful. Our contest will run until March 1 and the class who contributes the most will win a pizza party. Your trash could be our treasure! Thank you! Mrs. Powell LOST AND FOUND - If your student has lost a coat, please check with the Amanda Porter-Cain. The coats have been moved to the athletic director’s office in the Early Childhood Building. SCHOOL OFFICE—TAX STATEMENT: If you would like a printout of your payments to First Lutheran during 2016 for tax purposes, you can print them off yourself by logging into your FastDirect account, scroll down to the bar that says “2007 Tax Year Printout”, change the year to 2016, and click the box that has “Tax Year Printout” in it. This will include school-related expenses only; summer daycare tax statements must be requested from daycare director Mellissa Flaherty. Remember that not all payments to FLS are tax deductible, and you should contact a tax advisor to find out what can be written off, and what cannot. PRINCIPAL – Mr. Birnbaum: Three weeks left for this quarter and re-enrollments papers went home last Wednesday and are coming back quickly. THANK YOU. We can't believe how quick this year is flying by. Please encourage new families to attend our Open House on Monday, March 6 & Tuesday, March 7 from 3:30 to 5:30. Our church congregation loves to see and hear the school children sing. I hope that you plan to join us! Please keep sending in your box tops for our class. It is helpful if they are trimmed and in baggies in groups of 50. Thank you Leah Wade and all parents that helped with our fun Valentine's Party yesterday! Have a love filled week! SECOND GRADE – Mrs. Powell: Happy Valentine's Day! What a mighty God we serve! He loves us even when we're not especially lovable and places people in our lives who love us. Thanks to all the parents and grandparents who planned our Valentine party and joined us for the fun event. Enjoy your three-day weekend! Blessings! THIRD GRADE – Mrs. Steichen: Happy Valentine's Day!! Thank you for all the yummy goodies you all provided for the party. The kids had a BLAST! This week: Spelling, Memory, Math, and multiplication X2 facts test all on Friday. Reading: We are finishing up Charlotte's Web. We will test over it on Thursday, and watch the movie Friday afternoon. Next week we do not have school on Monday, but we will have spelling and reading tests next week. Book Report: Due Friday, February 24th. Please let me know if you have any questions. Have a wonderful week! FOURTH GRADE – Mrs. Sibley: Applications for the school talent show are available in the classrooms next week. All Valentine’s Day boxes were wonderful and had lots of hard work put into them by all. I was very impressed! Congratulations to Rachel for the Most Creative or Unusual, Brynn for the Most Traditional, and Reed for the Funniest boxes in the Valentine’s Day box decorating contest. Thank you for all of the Valentines that I received. They were very yummy and mean a lot. Keep going for Invention Convention. Continue to read for AR. Some have made or are really close to making their AR goal. Many have found that without nightly reading at home, it can be difficult to make our AR goal. FIFTH GRADE – Mrs. Schatte: Thank you to all who made my birthday so very special last Friday! I felt loved and blessed. How are president reports coming along? Spring break will be here before we know it! See my Fast Direct bulletin board for test information. We wish our 8th grade varsity basketball boys the best of luck in the Topeka basketball tournament this weekend. We are proud of you and know you will represent FLS well. Go team!!
MIDDLE SCHOOL Middle School Dance: has been postponed to Friday – FEBRUARY 24. STUDENT COUNCIL: Congratulations to our Student Council officers for the 2nd Semester: President Braley Warnecke, Vice-President Katie Kirchenbauer, Secretary Jacey Burden, and Treasurer Aliyah Bond. Mrs. Harbeson: Happy Valentine's Day! I hope each and every one of you felt very loved not only yesterday, but also everyday! Even though Valentine's Day is usually regarded as a day to remember your sweetie, I remember some words that a very dear friend sent me on a day that I was feeling a little down. He wrote, "Jesus loves you wildly, passionately, extravagantly, intimately, and unconditionally. And...NOTHING that is now happening in your life changes that one iota." Pastor Tom Ramsey sent me this quick little email back in 2010. I saved his email, and I look at it from time to time. I doubt he even knows how much those words mean to me. I hope his words will make you feel as special and loved by Jesus as they made me feel that day when I needed to hear them the most! Many of us will be traveling to Topeka this weekend for our basketball tournament. Please pray for safe travels, a good time, and great fellowship with other Lutheran schools from around our region. Blessings on the rest of your week! Mrs. Pacey: Congratulations to this year's MathCounts team! David Miller, Ryan Turnipseed, Savannah Valgora, and Madux Johnson came in 1st place at the district MathCounts competition! They also each placed in the top ten individually; 10th, David; 6th, Ryan; 5th, Savannah; and 3rd, Madux. They will be progressing to the state competition in March. Well done Drama Students! We have been working on Story Theater where each actor must play multiple parts and portray their characters without props or costumes. We have just finished our first project and are presenting performances to the class. We will be starting another Story Theater piece next week. Mrs. Hanson/Mrs. Hercyk: Time is flying by and spring will be here before we know it! And, this quarter is over half finished. Each class is in a new chapter now! 8th grade will study vertebrates, 7th grade is learning about volcanoes, and 6th is studying forces and motion! I look forward to these chapters because the kids seem to think the material is interesting. I hope we all can learn something useful and have a good time doing it! Blessings! Tanya Hercyk

Mr. Covert: It’s hard to believe we’re already over halfway through the third quarter! I hope that everyone is doing well, as it seems we’re finally out of illness season. We keep moving right along in our classes. 8th grade is finishing up westward expansion, and will be setting foot into the 1900s shortly. 7th grade is working through Southeast Asia, studying the people, landforms, and history of this little-thought of region. In 6th grade, we’re studying Christianity and its spread throughout Europe to become the world’s largest religion. 7th grade parents, I have gotten information of a passport fair on March 4th, which I will be sending out this week. This would be a great time to get passports for our trip to DC, so I’ll be sending out that information to you so you can plan ahead! I pray that God continues to bless our school family as we keep walking with Him through this school year. Blessings on your week!
