CRUSH THE CANS!

CANS, CANS, CANS!! Please remember that the middle school is collecting your aluminum cans, any and all! We will be recycling them to help the planet and then we will be using the earnings to help a local charity. We will be having a large event soon called "Crush the Can" and will be filling up a trailer with all of the aluminum cans. But until then you can bring your bags of cans, crushed or not, to the science room in the middle school building. THE LAST DAY TO BRING CANS IS OCTOBER 4!!

LUNCH AND BREAKFAST CHARGING – CHANGES:

New this year...families who are over $100 in debt in the food program will no longer be able to charge lunches or breakfasts. We are sorry to have to do this, but DHS is pushing the administrators of the food programs (the school) at the end of each school year to come up with the money to pay off unpaid meal bills ourselves. While we do realize that some families leave their balance over the summer, intending to pay it off when they return in August, it appears to DHS that we have lots of outstanding debt. Beginning this school year, we will send a letter to families who are over $100 in debt and your meal charging privileges will be suspended until you are caught up. Again, we are sorry for the inconvenience. By the way, this seems like a great time to mention that we do participate in the National Food Service Program, and we always have applications for Free and Reduced Meals in the office. It costs nothing to apply! If you have been turned down and your income or number of people in the household changes, you can always re-apply. This institution is an equal opportunity provider. If you would like to donate towards an anonymous school family's lunch fund, or leave your lunch/breakfast credit at the end of the year to a needy family, you can make those requests/donations in the office. CAN YOU HELP? We need a volunteer or two who is willing to assist with morning recess for elementary school from 9:30 to 10 a couple of days a week, and lunch/recess for an hour. If you can help us out, please contact the office. 1

PRINCIPAL – Mr. Birnbaum: I love hearing about all the wonderful successes of our current students and former graduates. Don't forget-NO SCHOOL or CC Friday while staff is in OKC for conferences. Book orders are in backpacks and due back by next Wednesday, 26th. For your calendars: Picture day is Oct. 4th, Trike-a-Thon is Oct. 10th (papers must be signed and returned), our field trip to Rustic Roots pumpkin patch in Lamont is Oct. 17th (papers will come home later), Fall break Oct. 18-19, first report cards and Parent/Teacher conferences will be the week of Oct. 22-26 (detail later) and Costume party will be Oct. 31st. PRE-KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Kelly: St. Jude Trike-a-Thon information is in backpacks today. Fundraising can be done online or in person. All fundraising needs to be turned in on October 10th. All children riding must have the permission slip signed and turned in. No school on Friday. Our Bible words this week are, Remember me, O Lord Psalm 106:4 We are learning about helping our friends, feelings, and the number "1". Have a Blessed Week! PRE-KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Heitman: We are still collecting money for the Epilepsy foundation during chapel. We have a few more weeks to raise money, so even though we've already surpassed our goal let's keep on bringing money in and earn that party! Save the date: October 10 will be our trike-a-thon and October 17 will be our fieldtrip to the Rustic Roots Pumpkin patch. Information for the trike-a-thon is being sent home this week in their folders. Please be sure to read over it. More info for the pumpkin patch will come at a later date. Book orders were sent home this week. New packets will come home this week. We had several people very generously sponsor our students in a "book of the month" club through Scholastic. Through their generous donations, each student will receive at least one free book each month throughout our school year! Thank you to those donors! Our Bible words for this week are "Remember me, O Lord." Psalm 106:4. Please continue to pray each day for your student, our class, our principal, and our school, so that we can make this the best year possible! KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Miller: We have been through all the alphabet and sounds once and now we will do them again but slower, taking one letter a week. Please keep working at home on the letters and sounds if your child doesn't know them, along with "Monday Folders". I am sending home information for the St. Jude Trike-A-Thon so please look for the blue packet note today in your child's backpack. We do not have school on Friday so have a wonderful long weekend! FIRST GRADE – Mrs. Birnbaum: Memory verse for THURSDAY is Luke 17:3 - If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him. Please make sure that you work with your child on their memory at home. Thank you for all of your support with our chapel offering for the Epilepsy Foundation. The middle school is collecting aluminum cans for recycling. If you have cans, you may bring them to me and I will make sure they get to the middle school. Information went home today about our Trike-A-Thon, which will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 10. Please sign and return the permission slip to me. Happy Birthday to Juniper on September 18! Remember, no school on Friday! Have a great week! SECOND GRADE – Mrs. Powell: This is officially the last week of summer and the heat has returned! Thank you to all of you who were able to join us on our trip to Leonardo's. The children have great things to say about our day there. Last Wednesday we had our first visit from our class grandparents, Grandpa Dave and Grandma Shirley. Miss Kathy visited with us that day as well. We had a wonderful time and learned so much about the Oklahoma Land Run. Then we made a fun project that your children brought home to plant in your yard! These awesome grandparents are a true blessing to us and we appreciate their kindness. Enjoy your long weekend! Blessings! THIRD GRADE – Mrs. Steichen: Hope everyone is having a wonderful week! I have one excited class for our field trip this week. We have been having trouble getting things done in class. For our field trip please be here as close to 8:20 as possible, so that we are able to leave. We will plan on leaving the zoo by 2 pm so that we can make it home on time. If you plan on staying late please let me know. Also, either pack a lunch or bring money to purchase. You may also want extra money for the gift shop. PLEASE wear a First Lutheran shirt and appropriate shoes. See you all Thursday!! This week: Memory: all OT books are due today, we will start the New Testament next week. I will post a link to the new song on my bulletin board. Spelling: Test over Rows and Piles of Coin words. Reading: We are making our way through the Chocolate Touch, ask your child about this book. This also means, no paragraph or reading test till we are done with the book. Social Studies: Look for a test next week. This chapter only has 3 lessons. Science - We just finished up and took our test on cold blooded animals. We have started warm blooded. Our animal project is due on September 25th. Please let me know if you have any questions. Have a wonderful week!! FOURTH GRADE – Mrs. Sibley: Spelling, Memory, and Reading tests are tomorrow. We still need a small handful of baby pictures to do our project! Remember there is no school on Friday for the teacher’s conference. Please continue to look on Fast Direct for student grades and missing work – it is the best way to keep track. Missing work and work done carelessly can really make for surprising grades. Being organized & following directions are the keys! Mid quarters are sent out today! Please have them sent back by Monday at the latest. Some are at the half way mark for the AR goals; some need some dedicated reading at night to make goals the kids helped to set. Nightly reading is difficult when AR books are left at school. Have a great day sharing God’s love. 3

FIFTH GRADE – Mrs. Schatte: A very pleasant time was had by all on our field trip to Leonardo's in Enid on Friday. Many thanks to all parents who accompanied us. We couldn't do these field trips without you. Tests tomorrow are the reading and final spelling test. Remember...no school this Friday due to a teachers' conference in Oklahoma City. Monday holds social studies test 1. Please help your child review for this test. An excellent study guide has been filled out during the course of chapter one.

PATRIOT’S PEN PROGRAM: The Patriot’s Pen Program is a 300-400 word essay contest sponsored by the VFW and open to students in 6-8th grades, who are enrolled in a public, private, or parochial school or home study program in the U.S. and/or its territories. The deadline to submit an essay is October 31. See the office for more details. "FLY" NIGHT TONIGHT! in the gym! Middle school through high school students are welcome to join us for some fun and fellowship! We will meet each Wednesday evening from 5:30-7 in the FLS gym. Parents are invited to join our 5:30 bible study during this time. Hope to see you all there, and bring a friend or two!! Mrs. Harbeson: Greetings from Middle School! Everyone is busy and excited as our class trips are quickly approaching! Ms. Pacey and I are looking forward to our Camp Lutherhoma trip with the 6th graders, Mrs. Hanson is preparing for the Zoo Snooze with 7th, and Mr. Covert is putting the final touches on the 8th grade Washington D.C. trip. I pray for everyone's safety along with many, many good memories to share when we all get back. In language this week, all classes are finishing their novels and taking their first grammar unit tests. Mid-quarter -- if you can believe it -- is today. Students have exactly 4 1/2 weeks to meet the goals you set out to accomplish at the beginning of the year. Please remember that study hall is offered (at no charge) every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:304:30. This would be an excellent time to come in and receive some one-on-one help. Also this week, we have had a few lessons on anti-bullying. FLCS is committed to following the Golden Rule found in Matthew 7:12 . . . "So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you." All students have been asked to sign a commitment to behave in a Christ-like way and to share that commitment with their parents. That commitment paper should have been brought home on Monday evening so parents could see what we are discussing in class. Parents are asked to sign and have their student return the sheet by this Thursday for a grade. That's all for now. Please keep all of us in your prayers. Blessings to you! Mrs. Hanson: All classes are wrapping up their chapters and will be testing soon. 8th grade test is Thursday, 9/20. 7th/6th grade test is Tuesday 9/25. We will be reviewing in class, but studying will need to be done at home too. 8th grade's bug project is due THIS Thursday, 9/20. An update on chromebook cases: we ordered them, they came in, we didn't like them... SO we are trying some other options, they should be ordered by the end of the week and students should have them next week, or the week after since everyone will be gone next week. 7th grade's zoo snooze permission form went home last Friday and was due Monday. Thanks to all who volunteered to drive already. The itinerary is being finalized and will go home with the cost for the trip. Money will be due by Monday, 9/24. Remember NO SCHOOL this Friday, 9/21! Ms. Pacey: We are gearing up to go to Lutherhoma, Zoo Snooze, and Washington D.C. I am excited to join the 6th graders again this year on the trip to Lutherhoma! We will have a great time! Some of the 6th and 7th graders had a test today (Course 2). Their test corrections are due Tuesday of next week. 4

Math Counts meetings are Wednesdays after school (3:30-4:30) and Fridays during study hall. Blessings on your Wednesday! Mr. Covert: We're halfway through quarter one here! I hope that everyone is doing well as we work through this quarter. Classes are moving right along. 8th grade is currently going over the amendments to the Constitution, so everyone can understand the rights given to us by our Constitution. In 7th grade, we're focusing on the Western half of the United States. As for 6th grade, we're looking at the New Kingdom of Egypt, looking at the Pharaohs that led Egypt through their golden age. 8th grade parents, we will be having a DC meeting on Thursday, September 20th, at 6:00 PM in my classroom. PLEASE try to make it there. This is our last meeting before the trip and we have a few logistical things we need to cover, so please do your best to attend. I pray that God continues to bless our school family as we move through September. Blessings on your week!
