Tesla Magazine aims to work as a support for everyone engaging a graphic design academic career, a useful tool to be always informed on contemporary graphic design. It’s a publishing project both offline and online. Tesla website allows to download and print current and past issues by yourself, and it’s an extended version of paper contents. Tesla is divided into sections (festivals, contests, print, bookshops, web, edu and projects) and every issue is focused on one of the design schools throughout Europe.

Come definiresti in generale la tua esperienza? Le uniche "delusioni" che ho avuto riguardano la scuola, pensavo che andando fuori dall’Italia si potesse solo migliorare, e invece—in alcuni casi—ho riscontrato un livello di preparazione più basso rispetto a quello a cui ero abituato. Descrivi brevemente i corsi e la didattica Seguivo cinque corsi: Atelier Pluridisciplinaire, il corso più generale che tutti gli studenti devono seguire, tenuto da tre professori. Un progetto riguardava le proprie referenze, l’altro era un lavoro di selezione e osservazione di un paesaggio urbano; Communication Visuelle, ci si occupava principalmente di poster e di brand. Prof giovane che dava molti spunti e faceva vedere diversi lavori; Photographie, due professori, le conoscenze degli altri studenti erano molto basse e c’era troppa libertà per il progetto finale; Typographie, più che tipografia era impaginazione e anche qui gli altri studenti non avevano praticamente conoscenze pregresse; Videographie, corso strano e la prof era un’artista visionaria. Non credo di aver capito molto. Consigli o avvertimenti? Più comunicazione tra le scuole faciliterebbe molte cose, come la scelta delle materie. Se il responsabile Erasmus potesse visitare le scuole partner sarebbe fantastico, ma mi rendo conto che si tratta di pura utopia.

Matteo ha 25 anni, da settembre a dicembre ha fatto un Erasmus all'Erg di Bruxelles, ma ha deciso poi di rimanere in città un altro paio di mesi, per non sbagliare. In questo periodo—tra le altre cose—ha abitato con un collettivo di artisti, ha fatto 4 esami, ha imparato un po’ di francese, si è innamorato, ha cercato lavoro e ha scoperto che gli piacciono cose di cui non aveva idea.

Penso che le domande si riconducano tutte all’ultima (non è per pigrizia eh, me ne sono reso conto dopo aver scritto per intero tutte le risposte). L’Erasmus non può che essere un’esperienza positiva: sei tu il regista, sei tu l'attore – anche se la scuola fa schifo, se il coinquilino puzza, se hai finito i soldi, se ti hanno rubato la giacca. Sì, potrei dirvi che all’erg si fanno solo progetti personali, che gli studenti hanno la puzzetta sotto il naso, che i professori invece sono molto preparati e i corsi molto interessanti, che la città è una bomba, che è meglio una birra in più che una in meno... Ma mi limiterò a darvi qualche semplice e banale consiglio: Il primo, forse il più ganzo, è non dire mai di no. Mai (A parte qualche situazione scomoda, è sempre interessante). Il secondo è evitare il più possibile gli studenti Erasmus: non dovrei essere io a dirlo, ma mischiarsi agli indigeni è il miglior modo per conoscere i posti dritti. Il terzo è ascoltare sempre Sammy del Gallo, il ragazzo hipster delle relazioni internazionali ERG, anche se dalla faccia sembra in costante hangover (se non lo trovate in ufficio è fuori a fumare). Il quarto e ultimo è di take it easy: alla fine siete in Erasmus e professori lo sanno, i genitori lo sanno, le ragazze lo sanno.

Matteo, 25 y.o., has been to Erg Bruxelles on Erasmus Program since September to December, but he felt it was right to stay another couple of months in town. In this time—inbetween other things—he lived with an artists’ collective, passed four exams, learned some french, fell in love, searched a job and found out that he likes things he didn’t expect to.
