Rejection Retreat “I just don’t know what to do Mike! I like him so much but he doesn’t even give me the time of day,” said a good friend Kerry over dinner one evening. And honestly, I’ve probably heard him make this very same statement about ninety percent of the guys he’s ever been interested in. It’s sad because Kerry’s actually very outgoing, has an awesome sense of humor, and is even the loving parent of a five year old Schnauzer he rescued from a puppy mill. Unfortunately, he has one very big problem. Kerry never really puts himself out there to any of the guys he’s interested in because he’s afraid to death of being rejected. Instead he mostly just ends up dating all the safe bets (i.e., any decent guy that actively pursues him). Although, I imagine if you’re the right kind of bait on the dating hook (as Kerry happens to be) you could very well follow his same safe approach and still have the romantic life of Liz Taylor in her prime. But would you really be bagging the guys you truly desire or merely settling for the ones that want you? I’ve also been guilty of this at times. When intimidated, I’ll even go so far as to position myself in eyeshot of someone I find attractive and never say a word. Without making any attempt at initiating contact, I’ll just stand there in some calculated stance, hoping it will do the trick and they’ll dash over to sweep me off my feet. It’s actually a pretty pathetic sight to see. What would happen, I wonder, if I actually engaged everyone I was attracted to in at least a casual conversation? How drastic of a turn would my dating life take? I decided this called for a semi-scientific experiment. I needed to find out whose approach is more fulfilling: the aggressive gays or the wallflowers. Now, my best friend George – the one person I know with certainty that doesn’t have a passive dating bone in his body – was the perfect tag along for the mission. His upfront approach has almost gotten us assaulted and/ or arrested on more than one occasion. Still, 14 davidatlanta
to this day he’s yet to back down even an inch when it comes to pursuing exactly what he wants. So one Saturday night he and I decided to party hop and swap roles. He would try my passive approach and I would test out his method of pretty much molesting anyone I could get my hands on. Honestly, I’ve never had more fun in my entire life. I threw my fear of rejection to the wind and in the process made a few new friends. By the end of the night I’d even exchanged phone numbers with some potential first dates for later in the week. George on the other hand, was held hostage by the same person all night long. I watched the two of them talk and laugh for at least a couple of hours. Then when I tried to drag him away to another party he actually told me to go ahead without him. That’s only happened once in the history of our friendship. And that time it was because he’d been detained in a back room by an exotic entertainer who just wrapped up his set. Even when I called to debrief the next day George didn’t answer. It was actually Tuesday before he finally returned my call. “Oh, so you are alive?” I answered the phone dryly. “Alive, yes,” he replied “and I think a little bit in love.” That’s the problem with experimenting. You never know what you’re getting yourself into until the answer blows up right in your face. Turns out playing shy worked in George’s favor. He met a guy he probably never would have noticed had he been on the prowl. The two hit it off so well that they’d spent every day together since. So I guess it really doesn’t matter what your approach is in the end. You can chase after every lead or stand quietly in the background, but when love is ready, seems like it has a way finding you.

ATLANTA’S NIGHTLIFE REVOLUTION by Jesse A. Hancock
Wet Bar. Red Chair. Paris Decatur. Backstreet. Exactly how many gay and lesbian bars have come and gone in Atlanta may be surprising. Reports of closings around the country are alarming, forcing bar owners to make some serious changes. Patrons are becoming more selective about where to spend their evenings and hard-earned dollars. Celebrating its two-year anniversary, Bellissima is striving to meet that challenge. The small neighborhood bar on Amsterdam Avenue in Midtown serves a large variety of wine and champagne, rather than strictly beer and mixed drinks. It also hosts a variety of events including live music, drag shows and charity events with Atlanta Executive Network (AEN), Joining Hearts, and the Atlanta Cotillion. “A big change that a lot of people like is that there is no smoking at our bar,” said owner Anna Ragghianti. “We are also a lot more accepting of all types of people. I hate it when we discriminate within our own community.” It is much more common today to see straight and gay patrons in bars. Places like
Mary’s in East Atlanta host theme nights and welcome everyone. Watch for a new club opening soon called The Deck. An inside source tells David Magazine it is going to be “the place to be this summer” and describes it as sort of a cross between Burkharts and Woofs with a skyline view of Midtown and Downtown. Other bars around town offer a wide variety of events, guest DJs and drink specials. Mixx, one of the city’s newest bars, is also non-smoking like Bellissima and offers karaoke, an outdoor patio and videos. The Heretic now offers Café Con Leche on Thursday nights with hot Latin boys and guest DJs. Many smaller bars also offer Bingo and trivia nights. Years ago most gay bars kept very low profiles (unmarked doors, blackened windows). They were often owned and run by mobsters because most businessmen did not want to deal with the prospect of frequent police raids. Most of the straight population was either unaware of gay bars or saw them as a threat to society. For many closeted gays, bars were the only places where they could safely be themselves.
Phillip Smith, who has lived in Atlanta 27 years, is a manager and bartender at Bellissima and has seen a lot of changes firsthand. “There used to be a lot more drugs, and bars like Backstreet were open all night,” said Smith. “Now bars close much earlier, which is disappointing to some people. The plus side is everyone looks much more rested.” Many longtime Atlantans say drag shows are much different today. Charlie Brown’s Cabaret is no longer around, except for special events, but current hosts like Mary Edith Pitts and Kitty Le Claw entertain crowds nightly. “There are a lot of drag shows in town, but drag today seems to be a lot more camp than in the past,” said Ragghianti. From the Armorettes at Blakes to Princess Charles and the Fashionistas at Burkharts to Chynna Fox and the Glamazons at Tijuana Garage, there is something around town for
everyone, gay or straight, who likes a good drag show. Swinging Richards, famously known for its nude male dancers, is also making changes. The club now offers VIP cards and dancer profiles on the website, and it just opened its partner club, Clydesdales (at the intersection of I75 and Northside Drive), an “upscale strip club just like Swinging Richards, but for the ladies.” According to Swinging Richards management, the boys have become so popular they couldn’t fit everyone into one building. The new club will allow bachelorette parties, and many of the dancers will rotate between both clubs. Whatever your taste, there are plenty of options in gay nightlife around town. Change is inevitable, especially in today’s uncertain economy. Bars are going to make whatever changes are needed to survive. 21 davidatlanta

Marco has lived in Atlanta for 12 years and tending bar since 2000. Originally from San Antonio, TX, he got his start working at Oscar’s. “It was supposed to be a part-time job while I was in transition between jobs.” Fortunately for us, “that never happened.” Now, he enjoys working at Amsterdam “because it’s not your typical bar. We offer different theme nights, drink specials and a variety of people come here.” Not to mention, they have “one of the largest screens to watch football.” Although Marco is always working, he does try to get some time to himself now and again. His favorite past time is working on his graphic design portfolio. However, he also enjoys working out, watching prime-time TV, and having dinner with friends. “My favorite food is Mexican—the way my mother would make it.” You can see Marco at Amsterdam Tuesday and Friday nights, Thursdays for lunch, and Sunday for brunch. ¡Me siento bendecido de ser quien soy Texto completo de la carta pública divulgada este lunes por el cantante Ricky Martin sobre su homosexualidad. Carta de Ricky Martin En los últimos meses me di a la tarea de escribir mis memorias. Un proyecto que sabia seria uno verdaderamente importante para mi porque desde que escribí la primera frase me di cuenta que sería la herramienta que ayudaría a liberarme de cosas que venía cargando desde hace mucho tiempo. Cosas que pesaban demasiado. Escribiendo este minucioso inventario de mi vida, me acerque a mis verdades. Y esto es de celebrar! Si existe un lugar que me llena porque estremece mis emociones, es el escenario, es mi vicio. La música el espectáculo, el aplauso, estar frente a un público me hace sentir que soy capaz de cualquier cosa. Es un tipo de adrenalina y euforia que no quiero que deje de correr por mis venas jamás. Si ustedes, el público y la musa me lo permiten, espero seguir en los escenarios muchos años más. Pero hoy la serenidad me lleva a un lugar muy especial, uno de reflexión, comprensión y mucha iluminación. ¡Me siento libre! Y lo quiero compartir. Mucha gente me dijo que no era importante hacerlo, que no valía la pena, que todo lo que trabaje y todo lo que había logrado se colapsaría. Pero miedo a mi naturaleza, a mi verdad? NO MAS! Al contrario, estas me dan valor y firmeza. Justo lo que necesito para mi y para los míos, y más ahora que soy padre de 2 criaturas que son seres de luz. Tengo que estar a su altura. Seguir viviendo como lo hice hasta hoy, seria opacar indirectamente ese brillo puro con el cual mis hijos han nacido. BASTA YA! LAS COSAS TIENEN QUE CAMBIAR! Estoy claro que esto no se supone que pasara hace 5 ni hace 10 años atrás . Esto se supone que pasara hoy. Hoy es mi día, este es mi tiempo, mi momento. Que pasara de ahora en adelante? Quién sabe. Solo me puedo enfocar en lo que estoy viviendo ahora. Estos años en silencio y reflexión me han fortalecido y me recordaron que el amor vive dentro de mí, que la aceptación la encuentro en mi interior, y que la verdad solo trae la calma. MAN WHO LAUNCHED FUN-DERWEAR CRAZE INTRODUCES HIS NEW UNDERWEAR COLLECTION, PISS & VINEGAR Jason Sutherland, the man who helped launch the fun-derwear industry with Ginch Gonch, the unapologetically sassy underwear and lounge-wear company, has created a new brand of provocative gear. In its campaign tag line, Piss & Vinegar playfully asks guys “do you think you have enough?” It’s a double meaning referring to both their target consumers’ gumption and their ability to fill their briefs. It’s also a clear indication that though Sutherland may have left his bratty baby behind – he founded Ginch Gonch in 2003 the spirited candor he used to propel his original brand to prominence, remains. Piss & Vinegar is, however, more grown-up than Sutherland’s past creations. There is underlying message in the line; one that encourages guys to appreciate what life has to offer and work hard to live life to its fullest potential. the Brent Star report WHO’S IN TO BLOW UP RABBIT’ DOLLS? It’s ok to take a chance on things. Just ask Blakes. I’m sure they’ve never been happier about their decision to take a chance on the Armorettes (check out their show every Sunday). Their annual ‘Easter Drag Races’ was a monster hit! Held in the empty parking lot behind Blakes on Piedmont, and let me tell ya’, this event is a little different than how I used to celebrate Easter growing up. Like the condom inflation contest, I didn’t ‘get’ to do that as a kid, but just by using those condoms I knew that this event would be safe! Speaking of condoms in the parking lot behind a gay bar, the first Armorette I saw was Trashetta Galore! She might be ‘trashy’ but I see her as ‘Happy Galore’ because she’s always smiling or laughing. I’m glad I didn’t get stung by Bumblebee Toonahead as I crossed over to the other side to get me a drank. Child you should see this crowd! So many men-ses walking around wearing 5 feet high bonnets. My favorite was probably the one worn by SoFonda Cox where she had a massive Easter basket with purple cotton grass and eggs that light up. Alllllllright Ms SoFonda! I really enjoyed the hula hoop contest…um…especially the winner who reminded me of Rickey Martin (you know, the one who SHOCKED the nation with his recent ‘coming out’ announcement), he was really trying to keep that hoop going by thrusting that pelvis back and forth just like Martin did during the “She Bangs” video. I liked it because it felt like it was right in my face, bang! Bang! bang! Oh sorry…back to the report.... um, yea and cover girl Wild Cherry Sucret (WHERE do these folks get their names?!!!) was there on top of her emceeing skills she’s known for with her partner in crime who’s no less cause she’s Knomie Moore! They had all kinds of crazy contests on this gorgeous Sunday afternoon but I had to go pee, so I went inside Blakes where it was stoopid packed. They had the events on the big screens I guess for the girls who didn’t want to get sunburn. Later I went downstairs where the music was completely different but same overly packed and just as gay especially with Dj Bill Berdeaux’s fun over the top video mixes! Then as if one of those blow up rabbit dolls that Blakes had displayed around the bar came off the wall and ran in front of me pointing at his watch to remind 42 davidatlanta
me to HURRY because I’m performing at Burkharts’ special 7pm show. First off, it was fun to work with Pamela Anderson again (Heather Daniels), the girls where in aw of her Bob Mackie type costumes! Host Mary Edith Pitts was in good spirits as it turned out to be a good crowd for a 7pm show and to later see the crowd grow even bigger by the second show. Alicia Kelly worked it out for the kids with her Patti LaBelle number! Queen of the Jungle, Niesha Dupree, was in the second show and INSISTED on calling me Stasha Sanchez (Miss Gay USofA 2009). They’re baaaaack! And just in time for the historic 20th anniversary of the original Gay Day at the Magic Kingdom. The event has since turned into the largest annual multi-day gathering of gays and lesbians in the nation, drawing an estimated 150,000 from around the globe. We all have heard of the phrase, “We are our own worst enemies.” Sadly, we never hear the phrase “We are our own best friends.” We are always searching for something to complete us, waiting for something to make us happy. And in that search we make a lot of ties to people and we think those ties are knotted safely. How many times have we put all of our hopes in someone else? And when situations spin into a Tornado of disappointment, the wind thus blows everything into our own faces. Often we are left picking up the debris, we are left trying to re-tie that knot.
that sense of failure that propels us into the cycle of searching for something tangible to fill our voids. I wonder, through all that searching, how come we never find ourselves? Why do we throw ourselves aside and hope for someone or something to claim us? Maybe we are our own worst enemies. But we all know…enemies can become friends. Next time we find ourselves searching for our next relationship or past time to distract us from the void that seems to represent a sense of incompleteness that is ever ubiquitous in our lives, remember, in the end, only we can make ourselves smile.
Maybe we can be our own best friends, after all, its never too late for patch work in our lives that can cover our various holes, There is no better person to patch you up on this earth then you. So Maybe we think it is something else that will complete once we make ourselves complete, once we go us, maybe its hanging on a rack in a store, or in the job from semi circle, to full-blown circle, we can find you hope to be doing, either way aren’t we all trying to someone or something else who is complete. Life as Robert Gonzalez knew it changed when he was asked to create weekly floral pieces for Oprah Winfrey and her Harpo Studio offices. Now a bon a fide celebrity florist, Gonzalez has done arrangements for the likes of Jennifer Hudson, Barbara Walters, and even President Barrack Obama. What’s your favorite late spring flower? I love lilacs, in all shades, for their fragrance and their romantic beauty. Sadly, they only bloom for a few short weeks so I always try to use them in as many of my projects as possible while they’re available. What’s your favorite summer flower? The Delilah is my favorite summer bloom. They also come in many shades and they are simply intoxicating. The size of the bloom is about 10’ to 12”, a very impressive flower to present in a bouquet. I always find the best specimens in New York City. How does one make a great bouquet? A substantial and lush bouquet requires about 24 stems. I always encourage novices to use the same flower in their bouquet. What flowers work best in a bouquet?
Is there an “in” color and flower for this season? Flowers reflect what is ‘in’ in fashion. Last season, pinks and blues were popular. Hydrangeas, muscari, delphinium, and hyacinth in chocolate brown vases or silk cover boxes were all the rage. This season we’re seeing more antique colors like butter cream yellow and pale apricot. Are there any other exciting trends that you’re seeing this season? Apricots and peaches are coming back very strong What’s your favorite bouquet to create? I love a simple bouquet of tulips or Delilahs. What are the most popular flowers for gay weddings? Roses, of course. Sweethearts usually choose the garden rose, tea rose, sweetheart rose or the classic rose. What’s Oprah’s favorite bouquet? I find Oprah tends to be less visual, more oratorical. She loves brilliantly fragrant flowers.
