Kid Unfriendly There are literally millions of children living in this country with thousands more being born each day. And for my entire life I have wanted nothing to do with to any of them.
As if he really needed to. Turns out that while our psychic was staring into our futures the arrival of our little bundle of joy was already set in motion.
I hate kids. I hate their snotty noses, dirty diapers, all the vomit, the all night crying, that eventually turns to whining, which as they grow older, evolves into a limited though highly opinionated vocabulary -- all of which I can simply live without.
Nine months ago seems like yesterday compared to right now. It all flew by so quickly with the morning sickness, the cravings, the mood swings. And those were only my symptoms. Hers were doubled by swelling, joint pain, and the inability to get a good bikini wax once vaginal swelling started in month seven.
But the really dreadful part about this is that I’ve just become a father. Not a biological father by any means. But when you accept a position as gay husband to your best friend (a heterosexual and reproductively fertile female) your responsibilities do not end at just directing her fashion sense. When she and her man are on the outs, you’re the counselor. When she wants to lose ten pounds to impress all her girlfriends, you’re the personal trainer. And when she decides she wants to have a baby? Well, you should probably ignore every instinct you have that urges you to enter a witness relocation program. That much I’m sure of. It all started about nine months ago when my wife/friend Chase and I went to visit a psychic. I sat down full of questions about love, fortune, and for some odd reason, a pressing need to know whether or not Michael Jackson was really dead or if people would start spotting him soon at the Quik Trip during odd hours of the night. But all Chase wanted to know was when she was going to get the one thing she’d always dreamed of: her first child. “A boy,” said the psychic sharply. “You’ll know for certain in about a week’s time.” We walked away a little stunned, but mostly optimistic. After all we’d both just celebrated thirtieth birthdays and it was probably time our twisted little modern family take the next step and procreate since that’s what families are supposed to do. Fortunately for us both, her real husband just so happened to agree. 14 davidatlanta
Gross, I know. But since I’ve had the unfortunate pleasure of learning all about female anatomy I feel it’s my civic duty to pass a little bit of it on to the rest of the gays. It wasn’t until I got the call that she was in labor that the magnitude of what was happening really hit me. For better and for worse, a baby was on its way. Instead of rushing out to see the new James Bond movie and drinks with friends, we’d be getting our faces painted at birthday parties and be forced to roll around in one of those bins at Chucky Cheese full of unsanitary plastic multicolored balls. Not exactly my ideal of an evening on the town. For nine months I’d secretly imagined that nothing about my kid phobia would change and I’d loathe every minute of gay fatherhood. But then I saw her face. The little angel that had been hiding inside of Chase’s belly all this time finally decided to join the rest of us out here in the real world. Instantly all I wanted to do was hold her, protect her, and make sure she never had a want for anything in the world. Then, while lying in my arms, she opened her eyes, they lovingly met with mine, and with no remorse at all, she peed all over my lap and started screaming at the top of her lungs. To my surprise, I still felt the need to protect her. I’d just be bringing a diaper pad next time to protect my couture as well.

WHAT WOULD JOAN DO? Process Theatre Company’s “Christina Darling” proves to be much more than “Mommie Dearest.” By Frankie Ware
The actors are on a rehearsal break on a warm evening at Onstage Atlanta, and Topher Payne is sitting outside wearing shorts and a t-shirt, a tattoo of kudzu running down his leg… to a pair of patent-leather heels with ankle straps. He’s knitting a scarf, and practicing Pepsi commercials in German. Before the play rehearsal, there were costume fittings and work with the choreographer. “Joan Crawford had almost seventy years to perfect her image,” he says. “I’ve had a month. There is much to be done.” The statement isn’t entirely true. While rehearsals for the Process Theatre’s World Premiere only started a month ago, Payne has been developing the script for the show since 2004, when it was presented with tongue planted firmly in cheek as Joan’s version of the events described in her adopted daughter’s infamous tell-all, “Mommie Dearest.” The 1981 film, starring Faye Dunaway, has become a camp classic. But as Payne continued his research, he found a far more complex tale. “The more I read, the more questions I had. ‘No wire hangers!,’ okay, we’ve all heard it, but 16 davidatlanta
how come? I didn’t want to just re-play events, I wanted to find the motives behind them.” The play begins with Christina Crawford (played by Barbara Cole Uterhardt) at age 41, on the eve of the release of “Mommie Dearest,” the film. When she suffers a stroke, her grandmother, Anna, comes to help her cross over to the afterlife. Christina rebels, and Anna gives her a choice: If she wants to live, she has to prove she’s strong enough to survive. That’s a pretty tall order for the world’s most famous victim. “Christina is fighting against all these competing versions of her own life, from books, movies, press releases, interviews… she doesn’t know what the truth is anymore,” says DeWayne Morgan, who directs the production. “Anna forces her to go back and look at things from a different angle.” Along the way, we meet a brash young dancer from Oklahoma named Lucille LeSueur, who runs away to Hollywood to find her fortune. She befriends an openly gay actor, Billy Haines (Doug Graham), who assists her in crafting a signature persona. The image of perfection they create is branded “Joan Crawford.”
“The relationship between Lucille and Billy is the most genuine love story in the show,” says Kristin Kalbli, who plays Lucille. “They’re two people who really, truly get each other. Who doesn’t want that? Together, they wanted to manufacture the perfect movie star, and they succeeded a little too well.”
mother, Christina’s marriages, and the influence of Billy Haines. It also includes recognizable moments from Crawford’s films, as well as “Mommie Dearest,” (including Joan appearing in her daughter’s role on the soap opera “The Secret Storm,”) but presented in unexpected ways.
And that’s where Topher Payne enters, as the result of their efforts.
“When something like ‘No wire hangers’ happens,” says Payne, “I think people will have a completely different understanding of it. The simple truth of it is, in this story, nobody is entirely the hero, and nobody is entirely the villain. Life is more complex than that.”
“There are two competing versions of the same woman, inhabiting the same room,” says Payne. “The more famous Joan gets, the more Lucille disappears. And they’re locked in a fight for dominance. And then Anna shows up, furious that she doesn’t recognize her daughter anymore. And unfortunately, that’s the world in which Christina is raised.” Kalbli is uniquely qualified to play a younger version of Payne-as-Crawford. Both actors tower well over six feet tall in heels. “That’s not quite historically accurate, Joan was actually quite petite, but I think she’d approve,” says Kalbli. “She always liked to be a little larger than life.”
The Process Theatre’s World Premiere of CHRISTINA DARLING runs April 16-May 8 at Onstage Atlanta in Decatur. The cast includes: Barbara Cole Uterhardt, Topher Payne, Kristin Kalbli, Doug Graham, Betty Mitchell, Rose Bianco, Scotty Gannon, and Bob Smith. Time To Put On Your Purple Dress and Running Shoes Purple Dress Run Returns May 1 By Jesse A. Hancock
Midtown residents will soon see a streak of purple stampeding through its neighborhoods. On Saturday May 1 the Atlanta Bucks Rugby Football Club, a not-for-profit organization, will be holding its fourth annual Purple Dress Run benefiting the Bucks and YouthPride, a safe and supportive development center for GLBTQQ youth. The center provides “a place were youth no longer have to feel alone, invisible, condemned, or unsafe simply because of sexual orientation or identity.” This year’s race begins at Mixx at 1:00 p.m. with registration and a pre-event cocktail party. The purple mass then runs down to Piedmont Ave. and 10th Street to Blakes On The Park, then over to F.R.O.G.S. Cantina on Monroe Ave., and finishes at The Eagle with a cookout and celebratory cocktails. “Last year’s run was a blast,” said Randy Ladd (this week’s David Magazine cover model), who plays wing and center for the Bucks. “We expect even more runners this year. Rugby is something that a lot of people don’t know much about. One of our goals with the Bucks is to bring everyone interested into the rugby world.” A portion of this year’s fundraising will help pay for the Bucks to go to Minneapolis June 18 – 20 and participate in the Bingham Cup, a biannual international, non-professional, gay rugby union tournament. First held in 2002, the tournament is
named after Mark Bingham, a former University of California Berkeley rugby star who died in the September 11, 2001 attacks on board United Airlines Flight 93. Last year’s Purple Dress Run had 125 participants, and the Bucks are anticipating more growth this year with 150 to 200 participants. This year’s run is filled with awards and prizes for anything from the most money raised to the worst dress. Runners are encourged but not required to wear a purple dress. They may also wear wigs and makeup if they choose to do so, and race organizers strongly recommend runners wear good running shoes. The Bucks and YouthPride encourage anyone who wants to register to participate and learn more about their organizations to visit www.atlantabucksrugby. org and www.youthpride.org. People who want to participate can also can pre-register online at www. purpledressrun.org for $30 or register day of the race for $40. Once pre-registered, participants can download a pledge form and start getting donations to be turned in on the day of the event. People can sponsor their favorite runner for this year’s Purple Dress Run at www.atlantabucksrugby. org. This event is sponsored by Project Q, Mixx, Blakes on the Park, The Eagle, The Great American T-Shirt Factory and F.R.O.G.S. Cantina. 31 davidatlanta

Owen McCord Owen McCord moved to Atlanta from Alabama in 1999 and has been performing ever since. Knowing that he already loved the stage, he admits it is what he wanted when he moved here. “It seemed to be the perfect outlet for me, here in the Atlanta gay scene.” Owen gets his inspiration to perform from within, “My aspiration is to be the best drag king in the South. [That aspiration also] inspires me to be a better mentor.” His inspirations my come from within, but his respect definitely goes outward to his peers. He wants to be a performer who can withstand time and he tips his hat to those locals who already have, “I look up to Niesha Dupree, Charlie Brown, Shawnna Brooks, and Lena Lust…for their longevity and ability to constantly reinvent themselves.” Longevity shouldn’t be one of Owen concerns. If you’ve seen him perform, you know he gives us his all. “I mostly perform “illusions”…George Michael, Elton John, Elvis, Tim McGraw, and my new baby
Adam Lambert…I love to confuse the hell out of people.” Sounds like a great show, huh? It needs to be because Owen says drag kings are a growing group and he needs to stay competitive, “ When I started drag there were ten [drag kings] in this town. Now, there is a hundred, I swear!” When not on stage, Owen spends time with his partner, manages Royalty Productions, and has a sales job. “I used to perform full-time, but had to get a ‘real’ job in order to support my pageant fetish.” You can see Owen McCord perform in shows at Le Buzz, My Sisters Room, Jungle, and at venues out of town as he travels regionally. He will be at ‘Sexacola 2010’ Memorial Day weekend at Pensacola Beach, FL. “The future is always bright, baby…say ‘no’ to bad drag!”

Originally from Dallas, GA, Scooter moved into the city 12 years ago and has been tending bar for 4 years. He started out at Hoedowns, but know proudly pours for the masses at Burkhart’s. Bartending is very different from what he had been doing; “I was a property manager before…I just decided I wanted to try something different.” He enjoys working at Burkhart’s because he says everyone is laid back and the clientele go there to have a good time. “My bar is all about having a good time with great cocktails. There is no pretentious attitude, no judgments, and my customers ROCK!” When not working, Scooter is probably outside as he enjoys camping and hiking. However, he also enjoys relaxing at home with his cat, Loki. You can visit Scooter at Burkhart’s bar #2 Tuesday through Friday for happy hour and Sunday afternoons. “Burkhart’s is truly all about friends, family and fun…and I make a kick ass Margarita.”

the Brent Star report The Princess and the Ball! It’s 2:15 on a beautiful Saturday afternoon in Atlanta, which means Piedmont Park is packed so I didn’t think anyone would notice me riding my bike wearing a bunch of glitter on my face, complete with foundation, powder, rouge, and overpriced mac lip gloss, but apparently I was WRONG. If felt like EVERYONE was stirring at me, even the damn dogs, but so what, I’m on way to Bats-N-RougeDrag Softball Games. But what was odd to ME was this guy ‘walking his bird’ (the bird was in a cage) but REALLY? He was serious too…and cute…but ah, his ‘bird’ was a big distraction…well, maybe not a ‘BIG’ distraction… anyway, back to the game. There weren’t any hot dogs nor cotton candy being sold, no beer vendors, not even bleachers, instead everything was just the way it was supposed to be, in the raw, because this is the very first annual DRAG softball game. And can I tell you, it was a huge turnout and lots of fun! I think this thing is going to be huge in the years to follow! The Pink Cadets, of the Hotlanta softball league, hit a homerun with this batty idea. This fundraiser game rose more than what they expected putting them over $4000 for Susan G. Komen for the Cure (breast cancer---and not to be confused with Silicone cancer). Speaking of Silicone, I was on the BLUE team which consisted of few of the Armorettes, Savannah Leigh, a glittered up Owen McCord, and Diamond Monroe who’s first concern was “I wonder if I was suppose to tuck?” (crickettes). Perhaps I shouldn’t have laughed at Knomie Moore for not catching the balls, because I struck out twice (AND I used the damn T Stand). We played against the Pink Team played by the likes of Angelica D’ Paige and Alexandra Martin who actually hit the ball but never made it past first base, however she made it to one of the pitchers to snatch her wig off.
members were the Notorious Nicole Page Brooks, Destiny Brooks (great job Destiny!), but let me just say Kyra Mora made me feel better to see her strike out the way I did (including not hitting the T stand—thanks Kyra!). But I think aside from this being a very effective fundraiser, aside from Timothy Lyle of The Pink Cadets and Phoenix rounding us all up, the STAR of this game was, of all people, my sis, PRINCESS CHARLES! This was truly HER game! Clad in a teeny tiny pair of shorts that clearly belonged to one of her old Barbie Dolls, Charles batted her way to home base twice, she danced for the crowd, she posed while on each base and while being a catcher and frankly whenever she found the opportunity to pose! But the kee kee (hilarious part) was to see her run like a man, but land on base like the Princess she is (blink). On a sad note (insert dramatic voice), when my sis Charles did that last toe touch in the middle of the air like a gold medal wearing Olympic ice skater, she had a very awkward landing causing it to fuck with her knee. Oh, she’s fine now and everyone is in awe of how successful this softball game turned out (insert here the old baseball song, “Take me out to the ball game….”). Until next week bitches, don’t read the girls, read The Brent Star Report!
There were two games folks. After us, was the game between the Red Team and the Orange Team. Some of the Orange team were Fantasy Girl Phoenix, Armorette Bumblebee Toonahead, and a nervous Lady Shabazz who did better than…gulp…me. WAIT! WAIT! LOOK ACROSS THE FIELD! WHY are they having a wedding? And child, it appeared they, including those dressed up kids, were watching us (and some of the players were wearing white, short, see through tu tu skirts exposing those colorful underwear and from the Red Team you have Kyra Mora wearing an outfit that has her ass literally hanging out)! That’s what I like about the first time, there are no rules. Also a few of the other Red Team
There’s an organization that needs your VOTES this time instead of money….Coats Of Love (COL) is up for consideration for a $25,000 grant from the Pepsi Refresh Everything Project. Grants are given based on number of votes. Fans of COL can vote for the project through the month of April at www.refresheverything. com/coatsoflove. Grants are given to the top ten ideas with the most votes. Go here to vote: www.refresheverything.com (and we all can stand a ‘refreshing’)

Scorpio
March 21st-April 19th Your eagerness to embrace new tech and gadget-toys is peaking now, though you may also have budgetary concerns. It’s a balancing act, but your inner child is likely to take the initiative. April 20th-May 20th You’re feeling a little off-balance lately, but it might not be a bad thing at all! Your energy is directing you in some uncomfortable ways, but the end results are likely to make you smile.
Gemini
May 21st-June 21st If you’re racing around like a maniac all week long, that’s just part of the fun. Your energy is just about perfect and you may find that your friends and colleagues are wiling to pick up after you.
Cancer
June 22nd-July 22nd It’s hard to tell who’s right lately -- there are too many competing voices! It may be a good idea to do your own thing until you run out of inspiration, then just hide out or go home.
Leo
July 23rd-August 22nd Talk things over with your partner or colleagues at work -- you may be surprised just how close you are to the same goals. Now is a good time for working together, but only once you’ve talked.
Virgo
August 23rd-September 23rd You need to review your work -- but that comes naturally to you. It’s a good day for you to step back from the planning and look at how everything seems to fit together. Look with fresh eyes.
50 davidatlanta
September 23rd-October 22nd Your mental energy is riding high right now, and you’re almost certainly able to hatch a few new schemes or dream up new inspiration for a part of your life that has been flagging somewhat lately. October 23rd-November 21st It’s hard to keep up with all the details this week, but you know it’s essential that you do. Read every word of the fine print and get some help if you can’t make sense of it all on your own.
Sagittarius
November 22nd-December 21st Though most other people are pretty intensely social right now, you may be better off flying solo. Your levels of trust aren’t all that high, though they should return to normal before long.
Capricorn
December 22nd-January 19th You’re dealing with some serious flakes this week -- and not just during breakfast! Expect delays and interruptions as flighty people suddenly remember their responsibilities. Take care of your own needs first.
Aquarius
January 20th-February 18th Romance is heating up for you right now, no matter what your situation was like last week. Fights dissolve into memory, new flames kindle or old ones reignite with new intensity.
Pisces
February 19th-March 20th You may find it hard to balance opposing points of view lately -- but that doesn’t make it any less important! Try to draw on your own inner conflicts in order to make sense of the rest of the world.

community Grindr User Rate Growing in Atlanta, Around the Globe By Jesse A. Hancock
College student looking for friends, maybe more. 21 miles away. Say hi, I won’t bite. 2.9 miles away. No face pic, not interested. 1.7 miles away. Looking for real love if it still exists. 1789 feet away. In town for the weekend. 1284 feet away. These are just some of the profile tag lines of the 600,000+ guys worldwide on Grindr, the largest all-male location-based network in the world. According to Joel Simkhai, founder and CEO, about 53% of those users are in the U.S. Those numbers are growing at about 2,000 new members a day worldwide, up from 1,000 a day when Grindr launched March 25, 2009. “We just had our one year anniversary,” said Simkhai. “We celebrated with 55 parties in 30 different cities around the world in places like South Korea, Malaysia, and London. We have users in every continent in the world except Antarctica. We have a large presence in the United Kingdom, Australia and Japan.” In Georgia there are about 15,000 users, and 95% of them are in the Atlanta area. Grindr users sign on six to eight times a day for a total of one hour per day on average. Simkhai and his staff never expected such rapid growth, but they take that responsibly seriously and are constantly looking for ways to improve. “We are very proud of the distinction we have achieved,” said Simkhai. “I did not expect Grindr to have such a personal effect on guys’ lives. Users tell me all the time about how using Grindr has dramatically improved their social lives. Guys are now meeting other guys in their buildings, neighborhoods and cities on a regular basis.” 56 davidatlanta
One of the keys to Grindr is that no matter where a guy goes, he can log onto his iPhone or iPod touch and instantly find other guys to meet. Grindr users love the ability to see new guys as they travel or move from place to place. Using GPS technology to zone in on guys in the area, users can find someone to hang out with in seconds. “Our goal is to allow every gay or bisexual man to be part of the Grindr community by making it available on all platforms,” said Simkhai. Grindr is a free app for iPhone or iPod touch users, who can also download Grindr X(tra) for $2.99 monthly. It features push notification for new messages, no advertising banners, and the ability to see 100 more guys in the area than they would using the the free version. Grindr X(tra) also now has the ability for users to swipe from one profile to the next. Grindr just beta launched Grindr for Blackberry www. grindrberry.com People are busier than ever, working more than one job in many cases. With tools like Grindr, finding time for gay dating is becoming much easier. Guys may or may not find true love this way, but they are sure having fun trying. Grind away, boys!

something about life
by Nico Ramos
Don’t Demote Me We did not work; therefore, you need not exist. That is a wonderful statement for the relationship challenged. So make like Lindsay Lohan’s career and disappear. It is often challenging to downgrade from relationship to friends, and I feel that it is this downgrading that makes friendships post relationships so trying and confusing. Humans have a tendency to label things, and with these labels come the ranking of situations. For example, we have acquaintances. This is the bottom level of knowing a person, sure you have met a couple of times, probably judged each other while walking past, thinking “I am skinnier” or “You have better teeth” or something in that realm; however, when asked about the other person, you may say something like… “Oh I know her” or “yeah I’ve met them, they seem nice.” Friendship is the next level. Friendship brings a common bond between people and therefore conversations become deeper, and you have some admiration for the person, enough so that you go out of your way to facilitate some form of conversation. Relationships rank above friendships, supposedly. I am not sure exactly why, because often I find friendships much more appealing; however, because most relationships include penetration, they have a higher stake in regards to the realms of knowing someone. In a relationship, after the introduction of each other’s wobbly bits and wiggly wonks, things kind of coast along, similar to a friendship. You talk; you spend time with each other; you take time going downtown, and you feel like you are in that special realm of knowing a person. “No, we are more than just friends, we are in a ‘relationship’.” This translates into, “Yeah sure, we do allot of things that friends do, but I am in a higher rank because now we get to touch each other…allot.” We get so high on our horse because we are in a relationship. We walk around with pride; we seem to glide, looking 76 davidatlanta
at other people in ‘just friendships’ with a sense of sympathy. Then, it ends. Oh my gosh, the relationship is over! But the other party says, “lets still be friends.” We play along; saying “yeah sure,” but in reality we are thinking “You ass hole, I am not being demoted.” THAT is what makes friendships post break up so difficult. There is something in the mind that reels. Our ego’s get bruised; our feelings get hurt; our pillows get wet…and not in the fun way. It is the demoting that causes so much strife in our own personal struggle to deal with the ending of a relationship. Have you ever Facebook-stalked the other person incessantly, trying to see their new status updates, hoping that they are not doing as well because they are not with you anymore? Have you ever, hoping to see long full and hopeless status updates, see an update about an exciting evening planned with new photo uploads that confirm your worst fear: that they are fine without you? It appears that is one of the worst parts about going from…significant other to a semiimportant someone. Life is a series of promotions. We go from the car seat to the back seat then to the front seat. School gradually increases as years go by, from 1st grade to college. The ending of a relationship and the saying of, “lets just be friends” is like going from CEO in the corporation of your life to the mail clerk. It is this juxtaposition of positioning in your personal life that is the most jarring and causes the strife in your own heart and relationship with your ‘former other.’ As beauty is in the eye of the beholder; circumstances often look different in a different perspective. It’s not a demotion if you think about it. It is an opportunity to find another person who does not have the desire to demote you; instead it is like a new employer who is willing to not only match your former wage but add benefits as well. And in a poor emotional economy, what is better than true security? There is light at the end of every tunnel, especially if you carry your own flashlight.

Way too many queens are wearing makeup at the clubs. Like HEAVY makeup. Leave it to the performers, bitches! I was at a bookstore and saw a customer finish reading a book and put it back on the shelf. Then he came back with a new book and started reading it from the beginning. Is it just me, or isn’t this a form of stealing?
Is there no customer service anymore! everyone in the service industry acts like they are entitled! Baby, you have got to pay your dues! Oh and it wouldn’t hurt to just be nice!
