essentially major by Michael Jeffrey

Limited Liability Surely you’ve had this experience. You meet a guy and the chemistry seems compatible. So you give it a chance, but quickly discover your compatibility won’t work at all. However, he did introduce you to his best friend and the chemistry between you two is right on the money. Time passes and inevitably you and your initial love connection never move beyond the second date. But what about that hot friend he introduced you too? You couldn’t have been imaging things. There was definitely something there, right? In Georgia the statute of limitations for a felony crime that is not punishable by death or life in prison is four years. This is lessened to only two years if the offense happens to be a misdemeanor. But how long does a person have to wait before they are free and clear to sleep with the hot best friend of someone they’ve already slept with? “Never,” said Chase without even looking up from her lunch. I expected as much from a woman who still refers to her first grade sweetheart as an ex-boyfriend. “It’s like double dipping. If that’s what you want to do then get your own frikkin sauce and leave mine alone.” “Are we talking about your chicken strips or my problem right now?” I said, attempting to veer the conversation off our meal and back to the question at hand. “Both!” she said, reaching for a handful of my french fries. “Okay, but in my defense,” I said, pausing to get my argument together since her opinion on the matter wasn’t showing signs of any flexibility whatsoever. “It’s been five years since I actually had any physical contact with the guy.” “Look, all I’m saying, is if the best friend is that damn hot then you should have screwed him first to begin with. Nobody told you to pick the wrong one. You’ve made your bed, now deal with it.” I started to correct her new spin on the old saying, but either way you put it the girl had a point. Coming between friends is never a good way to start any relationship. 14 davidatlanta

Still, getting a second opinion never hurt anybody. And I luckily knew just the person to ask. “Wait, let me get this straight,” said George later that week over the telephone. “You’re worried about offending someone you haven’t seen naked in five years? I don’t even have shoes five years old.” He took the words right out of my mouth. This is a free country and being free to screw whoever you want is what gay rights is truly all about. Then again, this was George’s opinion after all; not the most stand up citizen to testify on my behalf if this thing should ever go before a court of law. But whose unbiased opinion could I really trust? “Well,” began my therapist during a session the following week. I figured since psychoanalysts seem to always save the day on Law & Order reruns, it couldn’t hurt to ask. “Five years is actually the recommended amount of time that a therapist is required to take apart from a client before initiating a friendship or even a romance.” That was all I needed to hear. I’d been running into this man for years now and every time we see each other the chemistry is just as intense as the moment we first met. The next time I saw him I was definitely going to make a move. It wasn’t long before we ran into each other one Saturday afternoon in Piedmont Park. We sat and talked for at least an hour about nothing in particular. It was great. Then just as I was about to ask for his number he mentioned that his friend (the guy I’d slept with five years ago) was about to meet him for drinks and asked if I would like to join. In that moment I knew we’d never be more than just acquaintances. Whether it’s clinically right or socially wrong, having to include a failed two night stand is never a good idea for a first date and definitely not the kind of chemistry I had in mind for a future romance.

el closet y salir de él

22 davidatlanta

LA NOTA ROSA IS NOT PRODUCED OR EDITED BY DAVID MAGAZINE.

W Hotel Midtown To Host First Ever Grindr Party By JESSE A. HANCOCK Move over, speed dating events. Step aside, Manhunt parties. There’s a new “social networking” party coming to town. Make sure your iPhones and Blackberries are charged, boys. The W Hotel in Midtown will be hosting Georgia’s first-ever Grindr Party June 10 at 9:00 p.m. Sponsored by Grindr, this multi-layered event will bring people together for something a little different. Dance, grab a cocktail, hang out with friends or make new ones. Also, grind away while listening to the beats of nationally-known DJ Lydia Prim, who will be spinning fresh tracks all night. As Prim’s fans know, she typically stays away from mainstream obvious choices in her playlists while choosing memorable beats that are sure to be crowd pleasers. You also won’t want to miss an art display at the Grindr party by local artist Brannon Purvis, who has been living and working in Los Angeles but recently returned to Atlanta. Purvis is a self-taught artist who started drawing as a young child. Inspired by his favorite music, his primary medium is oil painting on canvas, but he also works with clay sculpting, airbrush designs, and graphite pencil drawings. His work is displayed around town in various spots. Visit www. brannonpurvis.com to see samples of his work. This Grindr party is part of Indulge, Atlanta’s gay weekly event inside the W Hotel Midtown, Thursdays from 9 p.m. until 3 a.m. Indulge was formerly known

as Hydrate. Presented by Living Room, Indulge schedules guest DJs, special events, and parties all summer. In case you’ve been living on a deserted island for a while, Grindr is the largest, fastest growing all male location-based network in the world. Blackberry and iPhone (and iPod Touch) users can easily download a free application, create a profile that features one photo (and is easy to change as often as you’d like) and instantly start connecting with other Grind users nearby. By just selecting profile thumbnails, Grindr users can instantly assess potential dates and see how far away they are using GPS technology. Users can then send and receive messages, trade photos and even block other Grindr guys. Grindr launched March 25, 2009 and is growing at about 2,000 new members daily. Like Manhunt, it has hosted parties all over the world in places like London, Australia, and Japan. Although the app is free, there is also a pay version for $2.99 per month. It features push notification of new messages, no advertising banners and the ability to see 100 more guys in the area than the user would see using the free version. As reported in the April 21, 2010 issue of David, there are about 15,000 Grindr users in Georgia, and 95% are Atlanta boys. Grindr users sign on an average of six to eight times a day for a total of one hour per day.

Filthy Gorgeous

Semi Precious Weapons singer Justin Tranter talks about life with Lady Gaga, being ‘gender fluid’ and the band’s sexy new album By Chris Azzopardi Semi Precious Weapons miss when sex – the dirty come-ons, reckless rebellion and, of course, groin grabbing – was as important to rock as the music itself. So they’re bringing it back. As those who’ve beheld Lady Gaga’s Monster Ball spectacular know, they’re taking this mission seriously – in pantyhose or whatever other girly garb singer Justin Tranter’s feeling, the New York foursome make every glam-rock song, like the brazen, buzzed-about “Magnetic Baby,” a climax. As the modern priestess of pop rolls out another leg of the tour this summer, Semi Precious Weapons – who’s dropping their proper debut You Love You on June 22 – will wield their sex shenanigans across the world. Before heading out again, we caught up with Tranter to talk about being on tour with Gaga, how he sees himself sexually and his own precious weapon (or lack thereof). Why is sex an important part of rock ‘n’ roll? Because the whole reason rock ‘n’ roll became something different than pop music – and why rock ‘n’ roll became something different than every other genre out there – was that it was dangerous and rebellious and extremely sexual. Sex needs to exist in rock ‘n’ roll always, or it shouldn’t be called rock ‘n’ roll. Hence the crotch grabbing? Sometimes I’ll watch a video of myself and I don’t really even realize how much I grab my crotch. It’s a very natural thing for me even though maybe I’m fixing my pantyhose. Maybe I’m checking the dance belt. Maybe I’m just trying to grab my crotch. I don’t even know myself! It’s not because you’re obsessed with your junk then? Oh god, no. I like to pretend I don’t have genitalia. I like to think of myself as a “merperson” – genderless 34 davidatlanta

Your sexuality confuses me. Well, it should (laughs). How do you describe yourself sexually? I don’t really describe myself at all when it comes to gender and sexuality. There was a period of time where I technically would’ve identified as gay, but then I started sleeping with lots of women so that confused everybody. And I feel like if I were to call myself bisexual, that’s just so ’90s/Reality Bites, so I don’t really define myself at all. I’ll say like, “gender fluid” – that’s what I am. I’ve actually been on a kick lately where I really like to sleep with people who look just like me. So I don’t really know what you’d call that either (laughs). So why don’t you make a name for it? Once there’s a name for it, I have to give it up. Why do you hate that Semi Precious Weapons is often labeled a “queer band”? It’s not that I hate when the band is labeled as a queer band. It’s just that it’s not true. I’m obviously some sort of something that’s not typically heterosexual, but the rest of the band is 100-percent straight and there are four of us in the band, so to label us as a queer band would just be wrong. Besides, a verse and a chorus can’t decide whom it wants to fuck; it’s just a verse and a chorus. So labeling music as “queer” or “black” or “Asian,” it’s not that I’m against it, I just think that it’s incorrect. You’ve licked tits on stage? Oh yes. I’ve done lots of motor boating on stage. I’ve made out with lots of women on stage. Women have made out with each other on my stage. Lots of exciting things. Not on the Lady Gaga tour, though, right? When we play club shows they’re much, much crazier. Not that Gaga shows aren’t

crazy, but as far as the audience interaction with me, it’s much crazier at smaller venues because security wise it’s actually a possibility. Are you ever surprised at the fans that come out to your shows? Our audience is so mixed, and that’s how we love it. There are lots of cutesy gender-confused teens that come to see us play, which is amazing and an inspiration and they’re cooler than I am. But then there are lots of dudes that come with their girlfriends, and there are lots of clubby hot girls that try to bang the other

guys in the band, or I guess try to bang me. Most times they just want to pet me. How has opening for Gaga changed your life? We’ve got to travel the world with the biggest pop star in the whole world, which luckily is a friend of ours. It’s such an amazing, surreal experience for her to love our band so much even though we’re a filthy rock band and she’s a cutting-edge pop star. It’s a pretty ballsy move to have a rock band open for her, but she’s obviously a ballsy girl.

entertainment

What have you learned from her? Her advice deals with the beginning stages of our career, because we’ve been a band for three-and-a-half years, driving ourselves around in the van and playing every small, gross bar in America. We’ve done that for a long time. We were all teenagers, dealing with this first stage, as far as the world’s concerned, of our real career on a major label and going to radio stations and doing interviews and meeting celebrities and all that stuff. Her advice on how to deal with that – and our first trip around the world as an actual band that people pay attention to – has been amazing. Does she ever let you borrow her clothes, like the Kermit the Frog get-up? (Laughs) We do not share clothes. I’m 6-foot-4 and she’s 5-foot-2, so I don’t think it would be work out. That would probably fit on one of my thighs. Maybe one day I’ll wear it as a leg warmer. When did you start dressing in feminine clothes? I started dressing in genderless clothes on and off since I was 15. I thought I looked fantastic, but now when I look at pictures, I looked absolutely hideous. I had glasses and clear braces and blue eye shadow (laughs). But I’ve been wearing heels every single day since 2004, just after I had been in New York for two years, when I felt comfortable enough to look like that every day no matter what shit people said to me. 42 davidatlanta

continued from page 35

I just realized that’s just how I see myself, as pretty, so that’s what I’m going to look like every single day. It’s a lot more fun to feel pretty, all day every day. I’d prefer to get a bottle to the back of the head and feel awesome as the blood drips down my neck. Sounds like, from what I’ve read, you’re a lot happier with this album than your actual debut, We Love You. It’s true (laughs). With our new album, we bought back the record we made with (record label) Razor & Tie so that we could really make our first album, You Love You. As far as most are concerned, this will be our first record. We made it at Ocean Way, which is one of the nicest recording studios in the world. With the earlier record, we had played maybe 50 shows and then made it. With this record we played probably 350 shows, so we just really know what we want to sound like. The energy, excitement and filth of our live show have really transferred to this album, so we’re beyond excited about it. Why did you keep the album title similar? We wanted to pay tribute to the first record, to the fans who loved it and what it meant to us. But since we made that record, I’ve realized that letting kids know that we love them is not nearly as important as letting them know that they should love themselves. Obviously, they should love me and worship me, but they should love and worship themselves just a teeny bit more.

food review

MoSaic Restaurant We are constantly searching for new restaurants that entertain our penchant. While in search of one such restaurant, I came across MoSaic. Located in Buckhead, this restaurant offers casual American dining that has a touch of elegance as well as global flavors. MoSaic is extremely cozy and the décor fits the hustle and bustle of Atlanta. One of the unique features at MoSaic is their large patio which happens to be pet friendly. This is a plus for our pet lovers. Another factor that got my attention is their brunch. MoSaic is the only place that serves “White Bloody Mary”, which is made of White Bloody Mary fresh squeezed juice from white grapes, cucumber, green tomato and celery mixed with horse radish, lime juice and vodka. The brunch menu includes delicious items such as smoked salmon benedict, shrimp and grits along with Belgian waffles topped with amaretto whipped cream. MoSaic offers lunch and dinner with limited dishes on the menu. Since taste and fresh ingredients are extremely important, each item is made fresh to 46 davidatlanta

order and holds flavors that will you go back for more. Items such as Smoked Salmon-Goat Cheese Bruschetta made with tomatoes, roasted garlic, olive oil, balsamic and basil sprouts and Tandoori Tilapia with coconut scented rice, yellow curry, scallions, vine ripe tomatoes and lemon mint satsiki are fresh, flavorful and filling. The dinner menu holds similar items from the lunch menu but does offer varieties such as Paella made with grilled chicken, andouille sausage and shrimp served with saffron rice with onions, celery, red pepper, carrots and corn. No meal is complete without wine and dessert. MoSaic has you covered here too, as it offers a full bar and wines from Australia, Germany, Brazil, France, Argentina and of course California. So get to the Buckhead side of the town and indulge in this unique menu at MoSaic. Their motto is “The Only Piece Missing Is.....YOU!” MoSaic Restaurant Casual American Dining 3097 Maple Drive Atlanta, GA 30305 404-846-5722 info@mosaicatl.com www.mosaicatl.com

Open up and take in another perspective — it should be quite valuable to you! It’s a good time for you to step up your efforts to show a friend or loved one that you are totally on their side.

GEMINI

Things are a little strained right now, but not so much that you can’t figure it all out. You do need to try a few experiments before you’re likely to know how to proceed, so use your brain!

CANCER

Other people are more than a little confused lately, and that could mean that they keep misunderstanding you — even when you try to explain yourself! You may want to let it go until next week.

LEO

Don’t run off half-cocked right now — you need to absorb the situation fully before you can really make any headway. Check and double-check. Once you know what’s going on, your actions should stick.

VIRGO

Your energy is just right for now— especially if you have big plans you want to push forward! Little things should conspire to help you out, so you can expect to meet all goals.

LIBRA

Your emotional state is a little difficult to handle right now. See if you can get things together long enough to bow out of any big meetings or appointments. It’s a good self-care time, that’s for sure!

SCORPIO

Your social energy has definitely been working for you — it’s a great time to bury the hatchet, make new contacts or even take the first step toward a new romantic entanglement. Why not?

SAGITTARIUS

This is not a good time to bust out the credit cards or to forget about the long-term. If you can boost your savings this month, you are sure to appreciate your foresight in the far-off future.

CAPRICORN

You may feel as if your good energy has been driving you to this week’s big moment. It could be an award or just a hint of praise from exactly the right person, but now you know where to start building.

by Lucy

You need to do whatever it takes to slow down this week — even if that means slamming the brakes on some project that means a lot to you. Things should pick up very soon, but progress this week is false.

This is not a good week for struggles — at least not for you! Try to get your friends and colleagues to back you up, but you may just need to hunker down and wait for a more auspicious day to fight back. A stroke of good luck is more than it seems to be — though that doesn’t mean you have to get to the bottom of it! You can just enjoy the good energy and give thanks to those who watch out for you.

By Chris Azzopardi

Andy Bell, Non-Stop

The new-wave band Andy Bell was born from, Erasure, had a knack for bundling heavy issues in breezy, head-hogging synth-pop. On Bell’s second solo outing, his approach is both celebratory and world-weary, but lost in a monochromatic mix that distills its colors over time. It’s a disco-glam frenzy of drum machines and electro madness, but several of the 10 songs instantly snap: “Running Out” is a robotic, laser-laden listen and “Will You Be There,” a heart-to-heart woop. One of a couple ballads, “Subject/Object,” never ignites, rhythmically flatlining unlike its much better mate, the hypnotic soul of “Slow Release.” There, his voice ripens to its 46-year-old age, and, in fact, rarely ever reaches for that famous falsetto throughout the set’s entire 37 minutes. Bell and producer Pascal Gabriel – who has Kylie Minogue and Little Boots cred – certainly play to their club-hungry queers. “Non-Stop” is a druggie’s dream come true, pure blitz that’s as euphoric as they come. After that, he goes even gayer: “DHDQ” is an über-campy tribute to drag queens who try to outdo Debbie Harry and, with Jane’s Addiction frontman Perry Farrell, “Honey If You Love Him” summons something as nauseatingly dizzying as drinking while dancing ... nonstop. (Available June 8) Grade: B-

Chely Wright, Lifted Off the Ground

Country got a queer recently – at least publicly – and now everyone’s questioning the timing of Chely Wright’s “I’m a lesbian” announcement and the release of this, her seventh album. However you feel, as someone born and bred in a 62 davidatlanta

conservative platform, it was a bold move. Stepping toward it is what’s gleaned this collection of heart-on-sleeve songs that drift from her country upbringing and into folkie territory, but barely comes off as audacious as her big reveal. Not a bad thing, necessarily: Wright’s musings on doubt, relationships and freedom don’t shout her lesbianism from the rooftop (pronouns are nil), instead shooting for a mysterious haze that allows for open interpretation. One of the album’s few insta-melodic moments, “Heavenly Days” feels like more than it should because of her outing with lines like, “Dare to be different, dare to be true.” “Wish Me Away,” a lovelorn weepie that sounds like a lullaby, is also sublime. But otherwise, Lifted Off the Ground is mostly standard singer-songwriter turf: the sagging production isn’t often piquing and her lyrics aren’t exactly as cutting as probably intended, both of which fault the clumsy “Object of Your Rejection.” But, as Wright said, this feels like her first album; she’s just been lifted. Wait till you see her fly. Grade: C+

Also Out

Hanson, Shout it Out

Boy band, whaaat? Even if this trio of “MMMBop” brothers carries that limiting label on their eighth album (!?), they’re breaking out the blues for some big-people pop that’s about as sunny as cruising the SoCal coast. It doesn’t get much more fun than “Thinking ’Bout Somethin’,” a getting-over-you groove that’s infused with a summertime sweetness, or the piano pop of “Make it Out Alive.” Clouds roll in on “Me, Myself and I,” a mature breakup song with a big (broken) heart, beautiful harmonies and the proof that Hanson is so much more than naysayers thought. (Available June 8)

Court Yard Hounds, Court Yard Hounds

Even if Natalie Maines sat this one out as the Dixie Chicks sisters – Emily Robison and Martie Maguire – returned to music with this side project, the spitfire’s voice on “Ain’t No Son,” about a father rejecting his gay kid, is there in spirit. Otherwise, this is like a Sheryl Crow sound-alike, rich in affection and melody, especially on “The Coast,” a breezy road-trippy tune, and the life-isn’t-what-it-seems “Fairytale.” Some is coffeehouse forgettable, but that last song, “Fear of Wasted Time,” really hits you hard.

the brent star report

SEX FOR SALE So the debate started when talking about an entertainer a lot of us know who decided to do porn. They were being negative about it but I thought to myself don’t we all do porn? I mean think about it, the only difference is a camera. And I’m sure most of the “off camera” porn we do is far more scandalous than what’s caught “on” camera. To further transvestigate this, I decided to go to Swinging Richards. No they don’t make porn there but I did see potential porn stars in the crowd…or whom I would want to be my co star(s) in one. When you first walk in the busy room you see the rotating menu on the catwalk doing their thing and well…swinging it at you. I see a mix of ppl in here like Princess Charles (oops, sorry sis) and a few more people who I won’t mention, a fish tank and 3 people who placed their order from the menu in one of the corners. I can’t tell who’s having more fun, the dancer or the spectators. That’s call public affection. But if you want a little privacy, they offer that too in their exquisite VIP area. But whenever I go back there I feel like an undercover Republican while his wife’s asleep. But then again, I should say a Democrat because a Republican would actually be fucking somebody. You know, I think I’ll put this place on my list of things to do in Atlanta next time my folks come to visit. Hmm, let’s see what our options are so far, Stone Mountain, Coca Cola place, the Aquarium (very fishy!) and of course, Swinging Richards. Now of course if you already got a husband then I think you need to create your own VIP room! You better do something creative so you won’t loose him to this land of sex addict zombies. However, being single isn’t the end of the world because you get to go places you wouldn’t (or shouldn’t) while married. You have plenty of options because it doesn’t just stop there, over in the Chesire bridge area you have more spots for single people to go. It’s time to CELEBRATE your singlehood child. There’s Bj Roosters. Those boys do their ‘thang’ all on the damn counter while you trying to gulp down your jack and coke. Bartender, I’ll have another one please, make it 72 davidatlanta

a triple! Okaaaay! Plus I’m off tomorrow. They also have their private ah...VIP ….ah…areas that you can enjoy as well. Plus they have pool tables child. Since you can’t have sex with the ‘boys’ you can still knock a few balls in the hole. Trust. I mean, come on, if you take away the Ipod, the DVR, the Netflex, the internet, and…yikes…the booze and party favors, the most natural entertainment built in men rather we like it or not is SEX!!! Well, of course, I think laughter is number one but who don’t want to get their rocks off. Now one place that comes to mind for you to go ‘shopping’ is Peek a Boo. That place is the like the Toys R Us for gay men…or a Radio Shack. If you married, you can sneak in and grab what you need cause child you need to keep that spunk in that relationship. Well…on that note you also have a taste of this stuff in Outwrite for good wholesome lube and educational sex videos, Brushstrokes offer some goodies too not to mention their sister store that’s a few stores down that offers even MORE videos. If you like this but want to take the kinky part up a notch, check out Poster Hut and the gift shop at the Eagle. Now these are just places to get your juices going child, if you want to REALLY play ball (so to speak) then there are two spots behind The Jungle called Euros, a new place called Manifest 4 U, and of course who hasn’t heard of FLEX. Now these are places where you can truly Cruise. Connect and Commune. That’s my time folks. I just wanted to give you a heads up (no pun intended). Until next time, stop trying to read somebody, instead read The Brent Star Report. Sex fact: Whatever happened to Southern comfort? Did you know that the sale of sex toys and vibrators is banned in Alabama and Mississippi? (sooooooooo, does this mean that Alabama is a Conservative state? Crickettes.) Where to catch Brent Star: Mondays at Blakes, Tuesdays at SHOUT, Saturdays at Tijuana Garage, Thursdays and Saturdays once a month at Burkharts and everywhere else that pays!
