Battling for Boy Toys 101 “I think I deserve Brad Pitt on my list,” said Chase, turning a fairly civil Saturday afternoon conversation into a hostile negotiation just that quick. “Excuse me?” I said. “You heard me correct. Brad fucking Pitt, I want exclusive rights.” “And what makes you think there’s a snowball’s chance in hell of this happening? “Well Michael,” she said, matter-of-factly folding her arms in front of her chest, posturing as if she were about to face off with Judge Judy on Court TV. “Brad and I have a kinship that stretches far beyond any claim you might dare try to impose upon him. We’ve been through a lot together.” “A lot of delusions, maybe.” “Please! You can’t even name three movies…” “Ocean’s Eleven, Benjamin Button, and Interview with a Vampire,” I rattled off at a stalkers pace. “You didn’t let me finish! Name three movies he appeared shirtless in.” “Oh God, that’s supposed to be more difficult? Troy, Fight Club, and the all time cinematic shirtless classic Thelma & Louise. Try again.” “You know, you really are a smug little man,” she said, her tone bruised with defeat. “Fine, who do you want for him?” And this is where the game really begins. Chase & I have been keeping a laundry list of the celebrities we claim exclusive rights to ever since high school. Think of it as fantasy football for gays. You pick your lineup very carefully, choosing each person for their unique talent and/or prowess, making sure that your roster is formidable against any sexually frustrated dilemma you could ever find yourself in. “A trade for Brad Pitt?” I said in awe at the mere suggestion. “I dunno. This is big money we’re talking here. So if I give you exclusive rights what exactly does that mean again?” “That means he’s mine and just as if he were my husband in real life, the next time you 14 davidatlanta

see him sweaty and shirtless you should keep in mind that the man you’re lusting over belongs to someone else – namely, me – and you’d better stay in your goddamn lane and take it down a notch.” “So I can never lust over Brad Pitt again if I give him to you?” “Basically. You’d be putting our friendship at risk in doing so and would you really want to see that happen over a piece of ass anyway?” “Okay, then I want Daniel Craig.” “Oh my god! You greedy bastard. Double-O Hotness himself? That’s the most monumental thing that’s happened to the Bond movies since Sean Connery died?” “Sean Connery’s not dead.” “He’s damn fucking close! No way. You can’t have him.” “Well, I guess Brad’s going to have to remain public property then.” The table was silent except her occasional sighs of frustration, her face turned up into a scowl more disgusted than the last time she attempted to stomach an entire Sandra Bullock movie. “I’m so over the gays! Its bad enough you have all the good men but now you bitches won’t even let me have the hot straight ones for my fantasies. It’s not fair!” This is the part where a good poker face must come into play. Your opponent can squirm and whine with all their might, but that should only serve as proof of just how back into a corner they actually are. “Fine! Daniel Craig for Brad Pitt,” she said. “But if I even so much as see you ogling at him, I get to publically scratch your eyes out. Deal? “Deal,” I said with a smile. “Now what were we talking about before this?” “Whether or not Michelle has let Obie hit it from the back in the Lincoln bedroom yet.” “Five bucks says that’s what they’re doing as we speak.”

Lordy, Lordy, A Drag Diva Turns Forty

Becoming a Queen

By Jesse A. Hancock Photography by Tim Wilkerson

For fourteen years, this drag diva has worked five nights a week around town at gay nightlife hotspots such as Blake’s, Nickiemoto’s, The Jungle, and practically every bar in town. Looking back, she said it is hard to believe twenty years have come and gone.

was interested in journalism in high school and college. She also worked as a corporate trainer for Olive Garden for thirteen years and with Applebee’s and Chili’s. After growing up on a farm in a small town, Martin knew she loved performing and wanted to become “the country boy who would be queen.”

“I only made $1 in a tip from a bar patron the first time I ever performed as a drag queen,” said Martin, “but the guy who tipped me said ‘You’re going to be someone some day,’ and to this day I remember him saying that. It has motivated me through the years.”

“We literally put four cities up on a dart board, and Atlanta got both of our darts,” said Martin. “I love Atlanta. It has been very good to me. I never thought I’d be here longer than five years. I’m proud to say I’ve worked at Blake’s for most of that time. I’m also proud to say I have a good relationship with every bar in the city. I love this community and what it stands for.”

Born in Great Bend, Kansas with a population of about 8,000, Martin moved to Atlanta in 1997 with her best friend. They were roommates for ten years before moving to Atlanta and couldn’t figure out what to do or where to go in life at the time. Martin

Martin, whose real name is Martin Alexander, started doing drag in Wichita, Kansas, and she said she used to sneak into

One of the biggest misconceptions about drag queens is that what you see is what you get; what you see onstage is who we are,” said Alexandria Martin, who turns 40 June 22. After doing drag for 20 years, this girl has seen it all.

the bars when she was nineteen, back when the laws were changing from the legal drinking age being 21 instead of 18.

“What? Michael! So if you knew for a fact my husband was cheating on me you wouldn’t say anything about it at all?”

“There was a pretty big gay scene then in Wichita, and there is still a decent sized community,” said Martin. “They do a small Gay Pride celebration. I haven’t been there in fifteen years, so I really don’t know what it’s like now. I try to go back to Wichita at least once a year and perform there whenever I do go.”

“Nope.”

“I was watching an old Oprah on YouTube with Janet Jackson when she was interviewing her about the Tyler Perry “Why Did I Get Married” movie because I’m thinking about matching my hair color to the way hers was back then, and she told Oprah that she wouldn’t tell her girlfriend if she knew her man was cheating.” “Yea, I agree.”

“This is some bullshit! Why not?” “That’s your relationship with your man and you should be paying attention to him, not counting on me or anyone else to. I don’t want to be the reason you guys break up. And for all I know you could already be in on the secret. Maybe you set him up with the girl and you hide in the closet and play with yourself while it all goes down. How am I supposed to know and why should I want to?” “So you think I’m an exhibitionist whore now?” “No, I just think it’s none of my business.”

Being Britney Derrick Barry performs Pride

By Jorge Treviano

Derrick Barry has made a career out of being Britney Spears. His impersonation of the pop icon has landed him spots on numerous national TV programs including America’s Got Talent, The Today Show, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and ABC’s The Next Best Thing. Local fans can see him live when he brings his Britney show to Milwaukee Pride on Friday, June 11th. Derrick Barry grew up in Modesto, California where he trained as a gymnast from age five. At twelve, he traded the parallel bars for the theatre stage. In truth, it was the adrenaline he experienced from a cheering audience that inspired him to make the change. Barry also realized musical theatre gave him the opportunity to perform with his body and voice. Today, Barry utilizes that musical theatre background in his career as an impersonator. All of his stage performances incorporate live vocals, whether singing the numbers live or giving the audience an a cappella teaser. Barry’s career as an impersonator began seven years ago when he first dressed up as Britney Spears for Halloween. His impeccably accurate and choreographed impersonation of the pop princess seems to flow naturally. It has won him much praise – including from Britney herself. In fact, the second time he dressed up as Britney, Barry came face to face with the princess of pop. Britney applauded Barry’s impersonation of her when he danced while she was interviewed on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Barry has even been featured several times on Britney’s official website. While on her recent Circus tour, Britney kept a copy of their shared magazine cover in her dressing room. The adoration is mutual. “Britney inspires me,” says Barry who shaved his head the day after Britney Spears shaved hers in a sign of solidarity. “Her music video concept for “...Baby One More Time” remains iconic. She proved her talent to the world and accomplished so much at a young age. I am excited to see what is next in her career.” As for Barry’s career, he recently added a new pop icon to his six-nights-a week “Divas Las Vegas” show: Lady Gaga. “I am huge fan of her music,” he says, acknowledging that a significantly greater 34 davidatlanta

amount of effort is required in order to create an accurate representation of Lady Gaga, the artist. “I spend hours creating crazy costumes and perfecting her elaborate make-up tricks,” continues Barry. On his days off, when not working on his vocals or choreography, Barry can usually be found adorning his costumes with Swarovski crystals. The persistence has paid off. “Lady Gaga told me I was beautiful. She was shocked to learn that I do my own make-up.” Before Barry added live vocals to his Gaga act, he apologized to Lady Gaga for lip syncing to her music. She responded, “It’s okay, because if you didn’t, you drag queens would put us out of business.” Her job is safe. Derrick Barry’s ultimate career goal is not only in music. It’s actually in comedy. More specifically, he’d love to land a role on Saturday Night Live. “Fans are surprised to learn that I am more like Jim Carrey in my normal life. I am always hiding around corners, scaring people, or making funny faces and voices. I love to get a laugh.” In the meantime, he’s enjoying being part of the resurgence of the impersonation industry. He credits icons like RuPaul who he says has made the art of impersonation a huge part of today’s culture. Derrick Barry is busier than ever, too. In addition to his “Divas Las Vegas” show, he headlines “Boys n Barry Sundaes” in Las Vegas every Sunday night at Krave nightclub. This summer, he is embarking on his second USA tour – a Britney Spears and Lady Gaga tribute – that will hit twenty cities including Wilmington. Female impersonation has opened doors for the young actor/singer/dancer. It has brought him in front of leading directors, producers and entertainers. Derrick Barry believes the exposure will eventually lead him to his ultimate goal in comedy. For now, he truly has the best of both worlds. Doesn’t everyone dream of being a pop icon? “You and Janet are so late, I swear! I don’t even want her shitty hair color anymore I’m so pissed.” “You know who looks like they would tell you all your man’s business?” “Who?” “Jennifer Garner.” “Oh god I can’t stand her, she looks like she has bologna smelling body odor. And she’s like vice president of the Bad Brunette Club.” “Who did we say was President again? Emmy Rossum?” “No bitch, Anne Hathaway.” “Yea, that’s right. I did love Jen Garner when she played in Juno though, it’s on right now.” “It’s always on! Fucking HBO. That is her only saving grace. When she wanted a kid so bad she was down to barter one from ‘ol scraggly looking Ellen Paige, I said to myself, okay, maybe she doesn’t smell so bad after all. Oh shit! I gotta go, CEO is coming.” “Fuck! Call me when you get to the car, I want you on the phone when I break down and start crying during the birth scene at the end.” “You pussy.” “Whore.” “Love you too, bye.”

Family Support Martin’s family still lives in Kansas. She is going home in a few weeks to celebrate her birthday with her family and said this will be the first time her mother has ever seen her perform in drag. Martin did not speak with her mother for about ten years. Her father died at age 42. She is still close with her sister, with whom she talks at least two or three times a week. “I was kicked out of the house when I was fourteen years old,” said Martin, “partly because I was gay, but also because I had a lot of behavioral problems. I didn’t know how to deal with being gay. I had a lot of fights at home. I had no role models. The only thing gay on TV back then was ‘Soap.’ We are blessed today that there are positive role models. My mother gets to see me perform for the very first time in drag in a few weeks. She just saw me in drag for the first time two years ago. We don’t always see eye to eye, but as long as I’m happy she is supportive.”

Changes in Atlanta Nightlife Martin says Atlanta gay nightlife is very different these days. She has seen many bars come and go. “Nightlife in Atlanta has changed tremendously over the years I’ve lived here. When I first moved here there were huge venues that appreciated drag. It was a cross-cultural attraction. It wasn’t just 42 davidatlanta

for the gay culture. There was a lot of unity and fun. Now we are restricted to the bars. It’s kind of sad. I can go to North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, Oklahoma, Tampa, and Nebraska. They all have show bars. Here we are in one of the largest metropolitan areas in the South, and we don’t have that. Thankfully, we at least have bars that support drag.” While she admits gay nightlife has changed quite a bit, Martin admires a lot of drag entertainers around town. “It’s great to see Sonique coming into her own,” said Martin. “She has been struggling with her transgender and personal issues, and it’s great to see her doing what she loves and actually see a smile on her face while she does it. And my absolute favorite show to watch is ‘Stars of the Century’ on Monday nights at The Jungle. They are so professional, so creative and so energetic. It’s a fabulous show.”

Family Support Twenty Years Transforming and Performing After 20 years, Martin says she still doesn’t know everything and has a lot to learn. She said drag today has come a long way, but there are some things have been lost along the way, such as the theatrics and costumes. “Unfortunately a lot of our entertainers today feel that they have to portray themselves as what we call ‘real fish,’ and that means wearing less clothing and trying to look as womanly as possible,” said Martin. “It should be about the costume, the concept, the creative energy and pulling it all together and presenting it onstage. That’s where I think drag has lost its flair.” Transforming into Alexandria Martin takes anywhere from ten minutes to several hours. Martin does all her own makeup and says the process depends on the occasion. If it is for a pageant, it can take several hours. Although Martin does not put together her own costumes, she said the concepts always come from her. She relies on talented friends to put together the outfits. She also says she does not believe in drag entertainers having “drag mothers” because everyone is an equal, a “sister,” to her. She said she does not need that validation. When people approach her to be a drag mother, she tells them to come watch her paint and transform, but not many people take that opportunity. “I think young performers are stupid for not taking advantage of someone willing to help and give advice,” said Martin. “Why not take that opportunity? I take it every chance I get. To this day if I get a chance to watch Charlie Brown or Lily White or Shawnna Brooks transform, I want to watch because it’s amazing what I can learn. Even younger performers like Summer Knight and Nicole Paige Brooks or Savanna Leigh. If I’m given that opportunity to watch, I want to see if they

Onstage you see the side of us that wants to entertain, have fun, perform and engage the crowd. In my personal life I am quiet and kind of shy. I don’t have to be the center of attention. For me, my drag persona is a uniform, like working at Delta or a bank or McDonald’s. That is how it is for me. For others it’s a lifestyle. It’s a job and I like to have fun.”

are doing something I don’t. If I like the way someone looks, I have no problem asking her to shut her eyes and let me see what she does and learn her process.”

Gimmicks, Roller Skating Martin, who has been a vegetarian for two years, is admittedly famous around town for gimmicks such as having patrons stick dollar bills to her while wearing a reverse duct tape dress. She also does a skit where people can come to her window as a Krispy Kreme drive through. She said she tries to think outside the box and experiment with ideas. She challenges herself to use unusual objects as part of her show, such as three-liter soda bottles, crochet dresses, and foam swimming pool noodle headpieces. In regards to being a vegetarian, Martin said, “The only meat I eat now is out of a zipper.” One of her most famous gimmicks is rollerskating in drag. She actually began rollerskating at age four as therapy. As a child she could not speak until she was six years old, and her speech therapist suggested rollerskating in hopes that listening to music would make her mind function and develop. “To this day I still have a learning impairment,” said Martin. “Sometimes people think I don’t know the words when I’m lip syncing. For the most part I do, but I may be a few beats behind.” Martin decided to put roller-skating into her drag performances after working with coach Marc Goohs in Wichita. Goohs and his partner, Brent Cochran (deceased), not only coached Martin in roller-skating, but also mentored Martin as a drag performer and taught her how to do her own make-up.

Community Service Martin enjoys helping other people and says she is proud of her work with P.A.L.S., CHRIS Kids Rainbow House, and the Armorettes. She recently started working with efforts to provide housing for transgender homeless people. “I am also very passionate about promoting Gay Pride because there are so many people who can’t or won’t speak up for themselves,” said Martin. “I’ve been given an opportunity

to be a semi-public figure and to have a voice. When I’m on that mic, I have an opportunity to be proud of who I am in the community.” Martin and local drag legend Bubba D. Licious co-host the monthly Bingo fundraiser at The Jungle to raise money for Pets Are Loving Support (P.A.L.S.). Martin said Bubba and former P.A.L.S. director Ken Rich are the ones who asked her to get involved with P.A.L.S. “Contrary to popular belief Bubba and I are very good friends,” said Martin. “As Bubba says, if we weren’t good friends we couldn’t make fun of each other because we would beat the shit out of each other. She calls me fat and I call her old, and we’re both right.”

Turning 40 “I absolutely love what I do,” said Martin. “I’ve surrounded myself with supportive people. It’s great to be in a community where I feel wanted and loved. It’s amazing to know I’ve actually lived to see this happen in my lifetime. It’s overwhelming. I will keep doing this as long as I can. People like Tina Devore, Charlie Brown, Regina Sims and Kitty LeClaw have proven to me that there is longevity in this business and if you keep doing your job you’ll be around. I hope to be as successful as those entertainers.” Martin will be performing in several birthday celebrations in town and back home. She also plans to spend time celebrating with family doing some things she loves to do: barbecue at the lake, drinking and having a good time. She will also get to see her nephew for the first time in 17 years. When not performing, Martin loves spending time with Molly, a Jack Russell that she calls “the love of her life.” “Turning 40 is important to me because I don’t know how long I’m going to be here,” said Martin. “Lord knows I’ve lived my life. It’s been a hard life but fun too.” Alexandria’s Birthday Celebration Performances June 21 Birthday show at Nickiemoto’s Drag-A-Maki June 22 Birthday show at Blake’s, old and new friends June 27 Reunion show in Wichita, Kansas at Our Fantasy Complex 43 davidatlanta

Vagina Jenkins

The Lady Ms Vagina Jenkins is the Queen of Queer Burlesque and we are fortunate to have her living in Atlanta. The artful tease is what burlesque offers and Vagina Jenkins does it with the beauty and glamour of yesteryear. She has called Atlanta home for 10 years and started performing in 2003, in Michigan, at the Womyn’s Music Festival. “There’s a non-official burlesque show on the last night of the festival every year and I got recruited to perform. Evidently there were some lesbians that wanted to see a little more of me. So, I made my costume out of silk flowers, a canvas bag, glitter, and a dream. Thus, the queen of queer burlesque was born.” You may have seen Vagina perform at MONDOHOMO or the bi-annual show, The BIG Tease. A long, seductive strip tease is what you’ll get. “I perform ‘burlettas’ that range from 20 to 30 minutes. I love the sexual tension that builds up in the audience. After the show, I hope that everyone goes home and ravages each other!” She admits that audiences can feed the performance and likes it when they are interactive. “A good audience can elevate and enlighten you. It should be an energy exchange between the performer and the viewers. I love audiences that really appreciate you and challenge you to do more.” 46 davidatlanta

Although she doesn’t have a ‘home bar’, Vagina doesn’t mind. She likes the idea of being a free agent and being able to make her own schedule. What that does is allow her to travel. Her summer schedule is a tight one and taking her to the San Francisco Queer Arts Festival, Detroit for the US Social Forum, New York, and then back home to Atlanta. “It’s intense, stressful, fun, and absolutely riveting.” When in Atlanta, you can see her at the Eyedrum Gallery. The art space attracts an eclectic crowd and “I believe in making art that crosses boundaries of race, gender, class, etc. That’s what the Eyedrum is about and I really dig the folks that keep it running.” If you weren’t able to attend this years MONDOHOMO, you’ll be able to see The Lady Ms Vagina Jenkins at The BIG Tease show next month. Dates and details are TBA, but you can check her website for all of the forthcoming details. You can also follow her on Facebook and Twitter. Sex on the Beach: My Pensacola Trip Part 2 (You gotta pick up last week’s issue for Part One)

For once I was the one nervous and not the hot str8 boy! “Well if we don’t find your friends, I have a car and we can still party”, he said. “The devil IS a lie”, I thought to myself. I started thinking about those fools from the movie HOSTEL, when they were trapped by dangerous seduction. So I kept looking as my paranoid ass began to sober up and…wait…oh there they are! THANK GOD!!! “Well I’ll see you later”, I told him, but then as I calmed down, I asked for his phone number. He gave it to me, but I didn’t see him again after that. So what, it was plenty of other guys who were actually gay that I can score with I thought to myself. Ok by then it was time to leave the beach and grab a bite to eat. At the restaurant I thought about the oil spillage and decided not to order seafood. After we ate, the group decided to split up (very Scooby Doo), Thelma and Fred (won’t give real names) went to a hot sexy underwear party (I started to go, but last time I went to one of those, I almost got pregnant), some of the group decided to go back to the hotel, but Chad and I decided to go check out the local bars. One of the bars, called Captain Crunch I mean Captain Fun, had a marquee on the outside advertising the show for Saturday that My Sisters Room put together starring Owen McCord and Kane from the ATL, two other entertainers, and at the bottom of it was a pic of me!...wait…why I got to be at the ‘bottom’? Who cares about all that right now, as long as I was in the show! Meanwhile, Chad and I decided to go next door to this beach party where Amuka of the hit house song “Appreciate Me” was performing. In the midst of the tiki torches, palm trees, acres of sand, Chad ended up ‘dancing’ with some cute gay guy and I ended up getting my ass grabbed over and over by his even cuter str8 friend. Fast forward to us four back at the beach in front of the hotel where we played ‘questions’. And then let’s just say, there’s a new meaning for me the next time I order a ‘Sex on the Beach”. 62 davidatlanta

The next morning (and with little sleep), the group met up, reloaded the coolers with more ‘dranks’ and headed back to the beach. It looked like it was about to storm, but we didn’t care. It was even more packed today! I recognized plenty of folks from Atlanta, like glamour girl Jade Daniels. But child, I can’t remember who else because after my 5th cocktail, I decided to parade up and down the beach wearing this mile long train (satin fabric). The kids really seem to go up for me doing that. I was feeling it! I wasn’t the only one, there was a group of twinks dressed like Indians (including war paint on their chests) AND a chief with them (prob their pimp)! Oh shit one of them must have done a rain dance because it started pouring!. It seem like everyone disappeared under the tents except for me and this random str8 boy holding on this air mattress we used to shield us. We started flirting until out of no fucking where, I heard a familiar Latin voice that said “Don’t worry Estrella, you’ll be ok”. Estrella means STAR in Spanish and I knew that the only person who calls me that is Louis from ATL and his friend Rosemary joined us. Well, he was right, cause the rainbow came out. They then took Chad and I back to the hotel. It reminded me of a scene from Lord of the Rings when that ho in all white came out of nowhere to save Frodo. I had to get ready for the show. It was packed! And thank God they liked my 2 numbers cause I was running out of coins! Well folks, that’s my time. I wish I could do a part three and tell you the rest of this fun trip and it’s adventures like when I lost my clothes and got stuck…It was a mess! Until next week, don’t read the girls but read The Brent Star Report!

Let the Sun Shine at Ascension 5 Fire Island Soaks in the Heat By G.T. Angelo

Five years ago, Eric von Kuersteiner had a vision to create a fun daytime party for the new generation of Fire Island. Since 2006, Ascension Beach Party has grown from a single event on the shores of the Pines into the island’s most anticipated and busiest weekend, with three days of stellar events, thousands of cute guys and unsurpassed entertainment—all raising money for von Kuersteiner’s charity, Fund in the Sun Foundation. This year, from August 13 through 15, the Pines will be ringing in Ascension’s fifth anniversary with new parties. “It’s a big year for Ascension”, says von Kuersteiner, “so each event will feature over the top production. We’re also adding a new event to the weekend, the Ascension Tea Dance.” Since its inception, Ascension Weekend has always been a magnet for major musical talent. From its inaugural debut with DJ Brett Henrichsen to last year’s tribal sounds of DJ Tony Moran with special guest performer Kelly Rowland belting out her summertime smash “When Love Takes Over,” Ascension has delivered hot beats and hot beach bods. This year’s event is no exception. The Freemasons, one of the U.K.’s most successful producer-remixer teams, are headlining the Weekend’s main event: the Sunday afternoon Ascension Beach Party. “The Freemasons blew us away at Jeffrey Sanker’s White Party in Palm Springs,” explains Von Kuersteiner. “It was clear after only a few minutes that they would be perfect for Ascension. Their high-energy vocal remixes have a fun and fresh sound that we haven’t heard on the Fire Island beach before, and their sound is guaranteed to lift everyone’s spirit and pack the dance floor.” In addition to the Freemasons, von Kuersteiner has a few more surprises up 76 davidatlanta

his sleeve. Showtime Network is presenting Friday night’s VIP Launch Party in celebration of its series: Dexter, Season 4. The party will include a special performance by Luann De Lesseps, ‘The Countess’, of the Real Housewives of New York City. The wet and wild Float Pool Party soaks up Saturday, followed by the premiere of the Ascension Tea Dance: free for all Ascension ticket holders. “We’re bringing out two of Fire Island’s favorite DJs, Twisted Dee and Phil B, to go head-to-head at the turntables,” continues Von Kuersteiner. “We’re building a tremendous dance floor on the Great South Bay which will also be the stage for a fabulous fireworks display.” All of this leads to Sunday’s main event to which von Kuersteiner hints more special performances are in the works. Set in the all-gay oasis of Fire Island, Ascension is the perfect summer vacation. Thousands of men from around the country and the world rent homes or shares for the week. Thousands more take advantage of the easy daytrip from the NYC metro area. “We offer incredible music, hot boys in sexy swimwear and the stunning backdrop of sunshine over the Atlantic Ocean.” Von Kuersteiner concludes, “It’s a recipe for magical memories.” Here’s to another five years! Ascension Weekend takes place Friday, August 13 through Sunday, August 15, 2010 on Fire Island. Beach party tickets are $75 in advance and include admission to Float Pool Party and Ascension Tea Dance. VIP tickets are $125 in advance and include admission to Float Pool Party, Ascension Tea Dance, VIP Launch Party, Closing Party and open bar at Ascension Beach Party. EPISODE ONE

Once upon a time Luke went to a palm reader in Gwinnett County. The palm reader told him, “You must move to Atlanta, Luke, for you will find love there.” “In Atlanta? Are you serious?” “As serious as voodoo priestess.” “I was in Atlanta years ago. I lived in Midtown, in a condo on Piedmont.” Luke said, “I didn’t find love that time.” “This time will be different.” “How?” “You’ll live on Peachtree this time.” “Uh-huh,” Luke nodded. “How good is this info? The last time I lived in Midtown, there was the Metro, Backstreet and I was, you know, a whole lot younger.”

“But this time,” said the palm reader, “you are old enough to legally buy drinks.” “Yeah, but who or what is telling you I should move back to Atlanta, back to Midtown?” “We can call it your guardian angel. You can call it your fairy god mother; I don’t care. You came to me and I’m telling you, based on this line; this line right here,” she grabbed Luke’s hand and pointed at some lines on his palm. “This is you wasting your time up in the big city, you’ve been dating losers and stupid people and you need a change. We all need a change sometimes and this time; it says you must move to Atlanta, Luke, for you will find love there.” And so Luke moved back to Atlanta. He left the old “new” life he had created in another place in another state and he came back to Midtown to recreate a new “old” life. Just as the palm reader in Gwinnett County predicted, he found a fantastic, high-ceilinged apartment in a large erection of glass on the corner of Peachtree and a street named with a number. Ordinarily the apartment would have been out of financial reach for Luke, but thanks to a tanked economy, he was able to put down cash and he move in the same day; a Saturday. Much to his surprise, the night life along Peachtree had changed in Luke’s absence; some people said it had evolved. Luke stood on the balcony of his new apartment a few hours after sunset and he watched from above as throngs of people wandered among the bright lights of Atlanta. There were restaurants everywhere, there were more bars and cafes than he remembered and there were men, lots and lots of men. The men came in all sorts of shapes, colors and sizes. From his distance above, they all looked tasty, appetizing or, at the very least, mildly attractive. 80 davidatlanta

“Will that one be my husband? Or that one? What about him; the one with the flip flops and the baseball cap?” Luke smiled down on Peachtree, “He’s here somewhere, apparently. All I have to do is go out and find him.” And go out Luke went. He was thirsty anyway and, as luck would have it, Luke’s new apartment was within walking distance from Ground Zero in Midtown: Tenth and Piedmont. Luke strolled across the street of Juniper and examined every man he passed on the way. “That one could be him; or that one over there. Across the street; is that my partner for life? Who will be the one?” Luke simmered in speculation. Luke passed some familiar haunts: Bulldogs and Outwrite Books, that convenience store wedged between the bar and the restaurant; only the name had changed again. Lured by the scent of vodka shots, tequila chasers and beer on tap, Luke ducked into Blake’s on the Park. On the way in, he saw a sign somewhere that proclaimed ‘The Daring Divas’ would perform at eleven. Luke ordered a drink; an apple martini; and he flashed his out-of-state driver’s license at the barkeep. “Oh I see! You’re new. Oh sweetie,” the bartender wore a tight black shirt and came ‘round the bar to be better able to check out Luke on the other side, “some of these boys here, they’re gonna look at you and see something new, something hot; somethin’ tight, and they’ll fight all over you.” “I doubt that, besides, I’ve been here before. I know how it works in Midtown.” “Oh do you now?” Luke said, “I came here for a very specific reason.” “And that is?” “I was told I would find love here.” “Where?” The bartender asked, “Here in this bar?” “In Atlanta,” Luke tugged on his drink, finishing off that apple martini in one gulp. “Can I get another?” “Oh sweetie,” the barkeep smiled, “you’ll find love, alright. You’ll find it again and again and again and again. This is Midtown; just about everybody is lookin’ for someone else.” NEXT EPISODE: A… is for ‘Attitude’
