essentially major by Michael Jeffrey

Clearing the Air “Excuse me, Michael?” buzzed Pamela the receptionist over the intercom sitting on my desk. “I’m sorry but there’s a package for you up front.” “Finally!” I thought, assuming it was the swimsuit I’d ordered online over a month ago but still hadn’t received in time to take with me to Miami for Memorial Day weekend. Big mistake. There wasn’t really a package at all. It was lunch; a grilled salmon Panini, side of fries, and bottled water. “Some guy in a suit and tie dropped it off and left,” she said with a smile. “Lucky you.” Now, there are many nuisances in life I’ve learned to tolerate. The inevitable long line at the post office, the unreliable internet access in my building even though the huge sign in the lobby boasts “free wireless here”, in fact I’ve even learned to tolerate my annoyingly egotistical coworker who constantly talks about how “overwhelmed” with work he is although he sits on Facebook recruiting for his weekly Glee viewing parties all day long. Still there is something about being caught off guard by the nagging feeling of falling really hard for a guy that I can never seem to get used to. “You know, at first I really didn’t want to say anything,” said Chase minutes later over the telephone. “But I kind of felt like you were falling for him about a week ago.” Thinking back on the past seven days, I had to admit I also should have seen this coming. I’d spent more nights at his place than mine. My nightlife schedule had become hinged to his plans. I’d even considered missing the Real Housewives of New York reunion show when he wanted to squeeze in a midweek dinner date. Fortunately for me we finished early enough to still catch all but the first five minutes of the episode. “When you were willing to miss middleaged women verbally fighting to the death in evening wear with Andy Cohen as the referee, I knew we really had a problem on our hands,” Chase concluded. 14 davidatlanta

She was right, this was a problem. Falling in like is one thing, but once I start neglecting my trashy reality television addiction something has got to give. But seriously, overdramatic “like” realization aside, I wondered if he’s aware of the changes I’m going through. More importantly, were these new feelings mutual or was I all alone out on this fragile dating limb? “Well he did surprise me with lunch,” I thought, beginning to add up the obvious evidence in my head. There was also his holding my hand across the dinner table in spite of the disapproving sneer we got from the couple next to us. Not to mention the affectionate way he consistently text me “Good morning, have a great day” at 6AM ever since our first date. Still, when you’re potentially about to put your heart on the table nothing beats a sound verbal go-ahead. The time was quickly approaching for me to confess my “like”, after which there was no turning back. Three consecutive sleepovers later and I knew I couldn’t avoid it any longer. It was officially the elephant in the room. All this shared time together, yet not one uttered word from either party about the feelings obviously developing between us. We were both halfway between sleep and awake when I found the courage to finally say something. But before I could get a word out, he yawned, nuzzled up closer behind me and said, “I think you just farted on my leg a couple of minutes ago in your sleep.” Absolutely mortified, my entire body turned to stone. I wanted to be the man of his dreams, not the gassy stealth bomber who can’t hold one back to save his life. Then it dawned on me, he hadn’t hopped out of bed like we were having a fire drill or slunk away slowly, pretending it never happened. He pulled me in closer, kissed my neck, and gently started falling back asleep. In that moment I knew words were no longer necessary. Everything instantly became crystal clear. He definitely liked me too.

ONE GUY. ONE GOAL.

KYLE COLLINS TAKES ON OPRAH

AND WANTS TO KNOW "WHAT'S YOUR ONE THING?"

By Mark DeLong

Kyle Collins has never met a stranger. Whether he’s at work, relaxing at Piedmont Park or out for a night on the town, he’s fascinated to hear the stories of the people around him. “I’m well aware that it could be a mild form of brain damage,” Kyle said of the innate curiosity he’s had all his life, with a laugh. “I’m just lucky to be able to channel it into something that doesn’t completely freak people out – most of the time.” It’s those people skills that make him a natural in front of a camera. For years, Kyle has dreamed of hosting his own talk show. And now, thanks to his idol Oprah Winfrey, he just might get the chance. Oprah and reality producer Mark Burnett launched the “Your OWN Show” competition in May to find a new talk show host for the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN), which launches January 1, 2011. More than 3500 contestants have posted three-minute videos online in the hopes of joining Oprah on her new network. Kyle and his team’s concept, “One Thing with Kyle Collins,” aims to help people accomplish their goals in life by focusing on simple tasks, tips and tricks.

“There’s tons of information out there on how to have a better relationship, get a better job or to jump start new, healthier habits,” Kyle said on his Oprah audition page. “But what’s the one thing that we really need to know? What’s the one, most important thing that will make all the difference? In our show, we find out.” Filmed just eight days after the competition was announced, Kyle’s audition video functions as a pilot and includes snippets of interviews with “everyday experts” talking about life goals, relationship advice, clearing clutter, and one thing everyone should have – a signature cocktail. But “One Thing” isn’t just about talking heads. Kyle helps his audience members pursue their own passions through the “one thing” concept, too. “Think of it as a party – like a good one where you’re not too tipsy and dancing on the tables just quite yet,” Kyle said. “When you’re in a friendly, comfortable space, most of us – and, my theory is, especially us Southerners – have a tendency to want to help others. To give the person you’re talking to a job lead or tell them about an article you just read that may lead them in a better direction. It’s what many of us do naturally. Just, in our show, we clean

it up, make it more efficient, and give people access to a larger pool of party participants.” Hosting a talk show is something Kyle has been preparing for his whole life, as a broadcast and online journalist and as a marketing strategist. “I had my fingers in lot of pies when I first came to Atlanta from Macon six years ago. I wanted to do anything I could – events, PR, marketing, writing, blogging. I was like a kid in a candy store. But then, there was a moment about two and a half years ago. I was literally opening my refrigerator one day, and thought, ‘Why am I not doing work that I specifically want Oprah Winfrey to see and to love?’ I decided to begin to reign myself in and to be thankful for all the various experiences I’d had, but to really focus on what I now know to be my true ‘one thing.’” Being raised in Macon, Georgia, may have fueled Kyle’s Oprah obsession. The city claims to have the largest percentage of homes tuned into Oprah in the nation, with 45 percent of the viewing audience watching her syndicated show. To thank the city, Oprah taped her 2007 “Favorite Things” episode in the Macon City Auditorium.

In addition to the online competition, producers are hosting in-person interviews at select Kohl’s stores, the last one being at its Roswell location. The top five online vote getters will be flown to Los Angeles for an in-person interview, and producers will pick other semifinalists. From all contestants, the producers will select their top 10 hosts, including at least one of the top five online contestants. The 10 finalists will be featured on “Your OWN Show,” a reality competition with challenges such as booking interviews, researching story ideas and a screen test. The winner of that competition will receive a commitment for his or her show on the Oprah network, produced by reality TV pioneer Mark Burnett (who brought us Survivor and The Apprentice, among other reality-based fare). “We are looking for people who have it infectious energy, a unique sense of humor, personality galore. Pair that with a fun and creative idea, and you could end up with your OWN show on OWN,” Oprah said in the contest’s welcome video. “Someone somewhere will get the big break of their lives. Do you have what it takes?” Kyle Collins, and his growing team of supporters, believes that he does.

cover Lordy, Lordy, A Drag Diva Turns Forty By Jesse A. Hancock Photography by Tim Wilkerson

Becoming a Queen

For fourteen years, this drag diva has worked five nights a week around town at gay nightlife hotspots such as Blake’s, Nickiemoto’s, The Jungle, and practically every bar in town. Looking back, she said it is hard to believe twenty years have come and gone. “I only made $1 in a tip from a bar patron the first time I ever performed as a drag queen,” said Martin, “but the guy who tipped me said ‘You’re going to be someone some day,’ and to this day I remember him saying that. It has motivated me through the years.” Born in Great Bend, Kansas with a population of about 8,000, Martin moved to Atlanta in 1997 with her best friend. They were roommates for ten years before moving to Atlanta and couldn’t figure out what to do or where to go in life at the time. Martin was interested in journalism in high school and college. She also worked as a corporate trainer for Olive Garden for thirteen years and with Applebee’s and Chili’s. After growing up on a farm in a small town, Martin knew she loved

34 davidatlanta

performing and wanted to become “the country boy who would be queen.” “We literally put four cities up on a dart board, and Atlanta got both of our darts,” said Martin. “I love Atlanta. It has been very good to me. I never thought I’d be here longer than five years. I’m proud to say I’ve worked at Blake’s for most of that time. I’m also proud to say I have a good relationship with every bar in the city. I love this community and what it stands for.” Martin, whose real name is Martin Alexander, started doing drag in Wichita, Kansas, and she said she used to sneak into the bars when she was nineteen, back when the laws were changing from the legal drinking age being 21 instead of 18. “There was a pretty big gay scene then in Wichita, and there is still a decent sized community,” said Martin. “They do a small Gay Pride celebration. I haven’t been there in fifteen years, so I really don’t know what it’s like now. I try to go back to Wichita at least once a year and perform there whenever I do go.” “I was watching an old Oprah on YouTube with Janet Jackson when she was interviewing her about the Tyler Perry “Why Did I Get

Oops, we made a mistake. In last week's story about Alexandria Martin, written by Jesse Hancock, we accidentally inserted a previous article written by Michael Jefferys right in the middle of the story. We have reprinted the original story below. Married” movie because I’m thinking about matching my hair color to the way hers was back then, and she told Oprah that she wouldn’t tell her girlfriend if she knew her man was cheating.?

Family Support Martin’s family still lives in Kansas. She is going home in a few weeks to celebrate her birthday with her family and said this will be the first time her mother has ever seen her perform in drag. Martin did not speak with her mother for about ten years. Her father died at age 42. She is still close with her sister, with whom she talks at least two or three times a week. “I was kicked out of the house when I was fourteen years old,” said Martin, “partly because I was gay, but also because I had a lot of behavioral problems. I didn’t know how to deal with being gay. I had a lot of fights at home. I had no role models. The only thing gay on TV back then was ‘Soap.’ We are blessed today that there are positive role models. My mother gets to see me perform for the very first time in drag in a few weeks. She just saw me in drag for the first time two years ago. We don’t always see eye to eye, but as long as I’m happy she is supportive.”

Changes in Atlanta Nightlife Martin says Atlanta gay nightlife is very different these days. She has seen many bars come and go. “Nightlife in Atlanta has changed tremendously over the years I’ve lived here. When I first moved here there were huge venues that appreciated drag. It was a cross-cultural attraction. It wasn’t just for the gay culture. There was a lot of unity and fun. Now we are restricted to the bars. It’s

kind of sad. I can go to North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, Oklahoma, Tampa, and Nebraska. They all have show bars. Here we are in one of the largest metropolitan areas in the South, and we don’t have that. Thankfully, we at least have bars that support drag.” While she admits gay nightlife has changed quite a bit, Martin admires a lot of drag entertainers around town. “It’s great to see Sonique coming into her own,” said Martin. “She has been struggling with her transgender and personal issues, and it’s great to see her doing what she loves and actually see a smile on her face while she does it. And my absolute favorite show to watch is ‘Stars of the Century’ on Monday nights at The Jungle. They are so professional, so creative and so energetic. It’s a fabulous show.”

Twenty Years Transforming and Performing After 20 years, Martin says she still doesn’t know everything and has a lot to learn. She said drag today has come a long way, but there are some things have been lost along the way, such as the theatrics and costumes. “Unfortunately a lot of our entertainers today feel that they have to portray themselves as what we call ‘real fish,’ and that means wearing less clothing and trying to look as womanly as possible,” said Martin. “It should be about the costume, the concept, the creative energy and pulling it all together and presenting it onstage. That’s where I think drag has lost its flair.” Transforming into Alexandria Martin takes anywhere from ten minutes to several hours. Martin does all her own makeup and says the process depends on the occasion. If

Continued on page 42 One of the biggest misconceptions about drag queens is that what you see is what you get; what you see onstage is who we are,” said Alexandria Martin, who turns 40 June 22. After doing drag for 20 years, this girl has seen it all.

it is for a pageant, it can take several hours. Although Martin does not put together her own costumes, she said the concepts always come from her. She relies on talented friends to put together the outfits. She also says she does not believe in drag entertainers having “drag mothers” because everyone is an equal, a “sister,” to her. She said she does not need that validation. When people approach her to be a drag mother, she tells them to come watch her paint and transform, but not many people take that opportunity. “I think young performers are stupid for not taking advantage of someone willing to help and give advice,” said Martin. “Why not take that opportunity? I take it every chance I get. To this day if I get a chance to watch Charlie Brown or Lily White or Shawnna Brooks transform, I want to watch because it’s amazing what I can learn. Even younger performers like Summer Knight and Nicole Paige Brooks or Savanna Leigh. If I’m given that opportunity to watch, I want to see if they are doing something I don’t. If I like the way someone looks, I have no problem asking her to shut her eyes and let me see what she does and learn her process.”

Gimmicks, Roller Skating Martin, who has been a vegetarian for two years, is admittedly famous around town for gimmicks such as having patrons stick dollar bills to her while wearing a reverse duct tape dress. She also does a skit where people can come to her window as a Krispy Kreme drive through. She said she tries to think outside the box and experiment with ideas. She challenges herself to use unusual objects as part of her show, such as three-liter soda bottles, crochet dresses, and foam swimming pool noodle headpieces.

also mentored Martin as a drag performer and taught her how to do her own make-up.

Community Service Martin enjoys helping other people and says she is proud of her work with P.A.L.S., CHRIS Kids Rainbow House, and the Armorettes. She recently started working with efforts to provide housing for transgender homeless people. “I am also very passionate about promoting Gay Pride because there are so many people who can’t or won’t speak up for themselves,” said Martin. “I’ve been given an opportunity to be a semi-public figure and to have a voice. When I’m on that mic, I have an opportunity to be proud of who I am in the community.” Martin and local drag legend Bubba D. Licious co-host the monthly Bingo fundraiser at The Jungle to raise money for Pets Are Loving Support (P.A.L.S.). Martin said Bubba and former P.A.L.S. director Ken Rich are the ones who asked her to get involved with P.A.L.S. “Contrary to popular belief Bubba and I are very good friends,” said Martin. “As Bubba says, if we weren’t good friends we couldn’t make fun of each other because we would beat the shit out of each other. She calls me fat and I call her old, and we’re both right.”

Turning 40

In regards to being a vegetarian, Martin said, “The only meat I eat now is out of a zipper.”

“I absolutely love what I do,” said Martin. “I’ve surrounded myself with supportive people. It’s great to be in a community where I feel wanted and loved. It’s amazing to know I’ve actually lived to see this happen in my lifetime. It’s overwhelming. I will keep doing this as long as I can. People like Tina Devore, Charlie Brown, Regina Sims and Kitty LeClaw have proven to me that there is longevity in this business and if you keep doing your job you’ll be around. I hope to be as successful as those entertainers.”

One of her most famous gimmicks is rollerskating in drag. She actually began rollerskating at age four as therapy. As a child she could not speak until she was six years old, and her speech therapist suggested roller-skating in hopes that listening to music would make her mind function and develop.

Martin will be performing in several birthday celebrations in town and back home. She also plans to spend time celebrating with family doing some things she loves to do: barbecue at the lake, drinking and having a good time. She will also get to see her nephew for the first time in 17 years.

“To this day I still have a learning impairment,” said Martin. “Sometimes people think I don’t know the words when I’m lip syncing. For the most part I do, but I may be a few beats behind.”

When not performing, Martin loves spending time with Molly, a Jack Russell that she calls “the love of her life.”

Martin decided to put roller-skating into her drag performances after working with coach Marc Goohs in Wichita. Goohs and his partner, Brent Cochran (deceased), not only coached Martin in roller-skating, but

“Turning 40 is important to me because I don’t know how long I’m going to be here,” said Martin. “Lord knows I’ve lived my life. It’s been a hard life but fun too.”

Onstage you see the side of us that wants to entertain, have fun, perform and engage the crowd. In my personal life I am quiet and kind of shy. I don’t have to be the center of attention. For me, my drag persona is a uniform, like working at Delta or a bank or McDonald’s. That is how it is for me. For others it’s a lifestyle. It’s a job and I like to have fun.” 42 davidatlanta

Coochie Gabana Originally from Panama City, Coochie Gabana loaded up her 1970 Cadillac Coupe de Ville in 2002, moved to Atlanta and never looked back. Performing most of her adult life, Coochie “learned a long time ago that performing in drag is a great way to help plenty of people through charity and I love it.” The one person who stepped into her corner and gave her a chance to get on stage in Atlanta was Chynna Fox. Although now living in Canada, Coochie says she will forever be indebted to Chynna for giving her a helping hand with her career. She is equally fond of, and looks up, to RuPaul, “… as trendy as it may sound. Not because of Drag Race, but what she has done for the community as a whole. She has compassion and strength. The days of how big of a bitch you can be ARE OVER!” Coochie has been performing with The Glamazons for a few years and considers her home bar to be Tijuana Garage in Little 5 Points. “Matty Lutes is the GM of Tijuana and no one could ask for a better friend and co-worker. The other ladies [in the show] are phenomenal…Lauren LeMasters, Envy 46 davidatlanta

Van Michaels, and my favorite of all time— Brent MotherFucking Star!” Her favorite performances are 80’s numbers and anything from Lady Gaga. If you’ve never been to Tijuana Garage, you should check it out. “I love to see the audience get into the show as much as we do. The place is always packed with all sorts of people.” When not on stage, Coochie can be found hanging out in the kitchen with, Kevin, her partner of 8 years, their two dogs, and their friends cooking comfort foods. “I am so lucky to be surrounded by loving friends… and I love food!” You can see Coochie Gabana on stage at Tijuana Garage in L5P on Saturday nights with all the other Glamazons. She will also be a part of the East Point Possums Annual Benefit on June 19th. “There will be 30 performers trying to raise money for a great cause. Come check us out. Thank You to everyone who has ever taken the time to say ‘hello’ or gave a gurrl a dollar… much love!”

the brent star report

Biography It was a clear blue morning of June 22nd that the happy go lucky stork dropped off a Star named Brent in the center of the Atlanta Zoo. There he was raised by a Hyena and a wild Peacock. Yea, yea, that sounds about right but Brent Star was actually dropped off in Houston, TX. There in the rodeo state, instead of learning how to ah…ride horses… he joined a theatre group in high school (this was way before GLEE) and earned a scholarship to study theatre at Prairie View A & M University—but it was there where he discovered his love for comedy. “No matter how serious I would try to get, the students would laugh and my professor used to say ‘Brent you can’t help it, comedy is in your blood’”. ( Well that was BEFORE he discovered Jack and Coke). Meanwhile, after graduation, the Star decided to get out of Texas and explore his comedic talents and of all places, he moved to Atlanta. He started off doing several odd jobs while on the side doing small parts in films, a commercial, and several odd acting jobs. But he never forgot his dream so he tried his hand at Stand Up comedy but never finished it because he got chosen to play big part in a touring Gospel Musical Comedy called A GOOD MAN IS HARD TO FIND.

After the tour, he put together his own show (which he plans to pick back up soon) and then one night decided to go see a show at Blakes back in 2004 hosted by his now friends Princess Charles and Lady Shabazz. They encouraged him to give drag a try,. “Shabazz told me ‘Don’t do it for them or for us, but do it for YOU”. That was enough for Brent to give it a try. Since then he’s hosted several of his own shows, he’s been performing gigs throughout the southeast, and currently still making folks laugh through his campy drag at SHOUT on Tuesdays (and where he kicks off his Birthday June 22nd), Tijuana Garage on Saturdays in Little 5 Points, occasionally he’s at Heretic on Thursdays (where he’s having his grand finale Birthday party), Burkharts on a Sunday or Thursday, and of course he’s at the club he started at, Blakes, on Mondays. He’s also one of David’s weekly writers. His column is called THE BRENT STAR REPORT. There’s a popular chant that the audience does sometimes, “BrentStar, BrentStar, Who Do You Think You Are” ---And he’ll gladly tell you, ‘”I’m a Performance Artist by nature cause I LOVE the damn stage and making folks laugh. But I’m also a friend”. Stay tuned for this rising Star’s future plans. He’s ready to take it to the next level.

Happy Birthday Brent Star! 62 davidatlanta

Luke hoped the love that he would find in Atlanta would not bring with him any attitude. Luke didn’t like attitude but, like most people, he would shell out the attitude whenever he wanted to or needed to. Luke did this for a multitude of reasons: either he didn’t like the boy/man/guy; he thought the guy was too ugly, too fat, too old or, on the flip side, because he was too young or too pretty and he knew it; or he was too short or not big enough, not cute enough or; more often than not; just because. “Just because” had, in fact, become the mantra whenever Luke decided he would not find love there, not with that guy, at least. Luke was nervous and overburdened with self doubt yet empowered by raging, unspent hormones and bursts of testosterone. This sometimes forced Luke to enter into lapses of judgment. When Luke got horny, he made decisions and not all of them were good. Indifferent, however, was his decision to go out on a date; an actual date; with a sexy, tall and muscular young man clad in New Balance sneakers. This young man approached Luke in the parking lot at the Ansley shopping mall confident Luke would accept his invitation. He said, “You’re hot, I’m hot. We should, like, get to know each other.” He said this to Luke right there in front of the liquor store, 76 davidatlanta

“Come with me to dinner tonight. I won’t take ‘no’ for an answer.” “Who the hell are you?” Luke thought this young man was an ass; presumptuous and pompous; but he was hot. Luke hadn’t seen exposed muscles like that in broad daylight in a long time. Luke looked at down at the legs, bulging like pigmented fruit hidden behind a flimsy, sweaty logo that read ‘Russell Athletic.’ Luke imagined wrapping himself around those legs or, if the young man played his cards right, those legs wrapped around him. The young man handed Luke a card and pressed a button on his keys, unlocking a fancy, shiny European automobile, “That’s my number on there.” Luke looked at the name on the card; it was a forgettable name and so Luke called him ‘Attitude’, for he had a lot of it. Attitude took out his iPhone and asked, “What’s your number? You know you want to give it to me.” That evening, Luke and Attitude dined at Las Margaritas. Attitude ordered a platter of quesadillas, Luke ordered some scotch, and they attempted to maintain polite conversation: Luke: “So, are you from here originally?” Attitude: “No, I’m just hot, I feel like I want

to take my shirt off.” Luke: “What do you do here?” Attitude: “I go to the gym. I work hard. You know you want some of this.” Luke: “Want what, you?” Attitude: “Me? I’m talking about the guacamole. What kind of guy do you think I am? You think I’m just going to give it to you?” “I don’t know. You seem like you like to give it rather than take it.” “You don’t know me. You don’t know anything about me.” “That’s because you won’t tell me anything.” “I don’t know what your problem is.” Attitude dished out some attitude, he said, “I just wanted to have a nice dinner and see where it goes, but I don’t think I want to go anywhere with you if you’ve got this kind of attitude.” “I’m the one with the attitude?” Luke said, “You’re the one who seems to think your looks make up for your lacking conversation.” “You’re hitting on me,” Attitude smiled, “I don’t know if I like it.” Luke scoffed, “And now you’re flirting with me?”

Something buzzed and vibrated. Attitude took out his iPhone and, frantically, his fingers flew over the small digital device. “And now you’re ignoring me.” Luke said, “Talk about mixed messages.” “That’s what I’m doing, checkin’ my messages.” Attitude glanced up at Luke, “You want to go to Heretic tonight?” Luke looked at Attitude; he was just perfect: his shoulders were broad, his biceps were big, his hair was highlighted and well-gelled and all his clothes were made of cotton. “You know years ago I probably would’ve said ‘screw going out anywhere, let’s just go back to my place and touch each other inappropriately until dawn’ but now I’m looking for the real thing. I didn’t come to Atlanta to screw around. I’m not in Midtown just hoping to mingle. I’m looking for love.” “For love?” Attitude asked Luke, “You came here looking for love? Good luck trying to find that here with that attitude.” “With my attitude? I don’t think so.” Luke threw some cash on the table, “That’s for the scotch,” he said, “I’m leavin’.”
