essentially major by Michael Jeffrey

An Atlantan in Paris (Part Une)

“Bienvenue à l’aéroport Charles de’gaulle international où l’heure locale est 08:45,” said Adrienne, the blonde bombshell of a stewardess that I’d befriended during the extremely long flight to France. And as rusty as my French is, it wasn’t hard to make out her announcement that we’d landed safe and sound in the city of lights. Europe had always been a dream to me; a magical place I saw in movies and photographs, still never within reach. But when my cousin Charles called with news that his company was sending him to Paris for two weeks (all expenses paid) I leapt at the opportunity to tag along. “You have to come!” he shouted over the telephone. “Just please promise you won’t have me partying in the streets all week long. I have to get some work done.” “Oh, of course I’ll behave!” I said, knowing the entire time that once we saw the city lit up at night his thoughts of work would fly right out the window. But just to be thoughtful and not a complete nuisance, I booked my flight to arrive four days after him so he could settle in and at least give the good first impression as being a perfect American businessman to his colleagues. It was early March when I arrived. Weather reports indicated I could be in for frigid temperatures the entire time I was there, none of which deterred me the slightest. I packed two huge suitcases. One full of winter wear, shoes, and separates galore to layer on if necessary. The other was basically empty besides one lone overcoat. I had no idea what Paris had in store for me, but I was certain I’d be taking a new wardrobe home as a memento. “Monsieur Jeffrey?” said Gilbert, the driver holding a sign with my name in bold letters. Apparently travelling for business came with its perks. Charles had arranged for my pick-up and drop-off with a company town car. During the ride I learned Gilbert was a French native originally from the city of Bordeaux. He moved to Paris in his teens when his father discovered he was gay and staunchly disapproved. 14 davidatlanta

“In Paris everyone is okay with who they are,” he told me in perfect English. “Here you can just be yourself or even find yourself if you haven’t quite sorted that out yet.” I prayed he was right. Finding myself was just what the doctor ordered. Dating in Atlanta had left its fair share of battle wounds. All the ups and downs really left me questioning whether or not I was cut out for a relationship at all anymore. Inside I quietly hoped all the romance and allure of Paris would somehow prove me wrong. As the car careened slowly through the city Gilbert pointed out all his favorite landmarks along the way; The Arch de Triumph, The Lourve Pyramid, and every glorious inch of architecture that made up the Opera House. But when we pulled up a few short blocks later to the hotel at 3 Rue de Castiglione, I was certain he had the wrong address. Not only were all expenses paid, but apparently Cousin Charles was doing better in business than he’d let on. Our Parisian home was The Hotel Intercontinental where a trio perfectly groomed bellman greeted me with kind smiles and whisked my bags away. Before I knew it I was settled in my room, gazing out the window overlooking the Tulleries Gardens. “Get the fuck out of here!” was all that kept running through my mind. The fact that I’d flown all night meant nothing. I was wide awake in this brand new world that seemed too rich and beautiful to be true. Then behind me I heard a door close and in rushed Charles screaming at the top of his lungs. “YES! You’re here! Can you believe this!” he shouted. We hugged for a long time and just stared out the window, taking in every inch of the moment. “So where do we begin?” I said. “Darling!” he replied. “We’ve got ten days. Let’s do it all!” Find out what happens in An Atlantan in Paris (Part Deux) in next week’s issue.

Cyndi Lauper

Sings the Blues and Still Having Fun By Jesse Hancock

Singer, actress, wife, mother, artist, social activist. Those are just some of the many sides of Cyndi Lauper, who is coming August 6 to Chastain Park Amphitheater with Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings & David Rhodes. After more than 20 years of entertaining and selling records, her powerhouse career is going stronger than ever. On this concert tour she is promoting her new album, “Memphis Blues,” a soulful blues-inspired collection that she says she has wanted to put together for years. Joined by blues legend B.B. King and other artists, this album is a step away from what fans are used to hearing, a step she hopes fans will take with her and enjoy as much as she did making it. Born Cynthia Ann Stephanie “Cyndi” Lauper, one of her first albums in the 1980s, “She’s So Unusual,” was an enormous success, earning a Grammy award for Best New Artist and making her the first female artist in history to have five Top 10 singles from a debut album. That success launched her into a wonderfully successful career. She has gone on to release 11 albums and over 40 singles, and as of 2008 had sold more than 25 million records worldwide. Through the years, she has also won many other awards as a singer, musician, writer and actress. She has starred in television shows such as “Mad About You,” “Bones” and recently in “Celebrity Apprentice.” She has also been in movies such as “Here and There” (2009) and “Life with Mikey” (1993). She has been nominated for 13 Grammy Awards, two Emmy Awards, two American Music Awards, seven American Video Awards, and 18 MTV awards. Not bad for a girl from a modest family in Queens, New York. Early on, she wasn’t sure she would make it as an artist. In the mid 1970s she performed as a vocalist with different cover bands. Even though she was performing on stage, she wasn’t happy. In 1977 she damaged her vocal cords and took a year off. Three doctors told her she would never sing again, but a vocal coach helped her regain her voice. A strong advocate for gay rights, Cyndi has done extensive work with her True Colors Fund and the Give a Damn Campaign, which as Cyndi says is “for everybody who cares about gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender equality.” Cyndi just celebrated her 57th birthday June 23, and Atlanta fans, gay and straight, can’t wait to see her in concert. It’s just one of her many stops on the Memphis Blues tour. 19 davidatlanta

David Magazine Interview with Cyndi By Jesse Hancock

David: It’s great to see you back with new music! For those who have not heard it yet, what can fans expect in your new CD, Memphis Blues? What was it like working with the legendary B.B. King? Cyndi: Something old and new at the same time. This is an album that I’ve wanted to do for eight years. Blues is the basis of all forms of popular music - rock, pop, alternative, R&B. I wanted to do this CD when I was still at Sony back in 2004. Me and Jeff Beck had wanted to do a blues cover project, but Sony didn’t want us to do it. I have always been a fan of blues because as Muddy Waters is quoted, “If blues gave birth to a child, that child would be rock and roll...” And really all popular music. I have been listening to the blues since I was a kid. Later on I loved how Janis Joplin and acts like the Rolling Stones made it modern 70’s . . . so I always had this project in the back of my mind, wanting to do this record for a long time. Then Jeff and I spoke about doing it, but that didn’t work out but I still wanted to do it and was just waiting for the right time to make it happen. It was a privilege to work with all the talented artists on the album. Every one of them from the great B.B. King, to young wonder Jonny Lang, to the amazing Ann Peebles, to Allen Toussaint. It was like a dream to work with each of them. It was an honor to be in the studio with B.B. King. Hello this is B.B. KING! David: How did you like working with Donald Trump and the other contestants on Celebrity Apprentice? Anything funny or surprising happen off camera? 20 davidatlanta

Cyndi: A girl has to keep some secrets, ha, which is next to impossible doing a reality show when cameras are rolling 24/7. It was like celebrity boot camp. Reminded me of being back in high school with all the cliques . . . I felt like an outsider then and had a feeling of déjà vu working with some of the ladies of the cast. But I learned a lot and I raised money for the True Colors Fund and also got a chance to talk about civil rights and the gay community. Donald Trump is a good guy. You can tell through his kids. They are all smart and sweet and grounded, so he is doing something right. But I generally like the guy. He has his issues, but don’t we all? David: Of all your work (movies, music, TV, charitable work), what projects have made you most proud? Cyndi: I always try and do the best work I can whether that’s music or acting or the work I do for different charity organizations. I am very proud of my career and very proud of what we have accomplished with True Colors and our Give a Damn Campaign. David: Early in your career, you were often described as “unusual.” How would you describe yourself now? Cyndi: I wouldn’t call it “unusual.” I was just being myself and being true to myself. I think if you do anything less you become a tortured soul. That’s why folks relate so much to “True Colors.” Most of us have insecurities, and to try and just stand up and be who you are can be a lot of work. I had rocks thrown at me for crying out loud, but I think sometimes adversity makes you

stronger. I am strong and life does get easier. The rock throwers are the ones that end up with the shallower lives. David: What can you share with fans about your private life and family? Cyndi: I have the best and most loving family in the world. I just miss them too much when I am touring. David: What up and coming musicians and artists do you like? Is there anyone you’d like to collaborate with? Cyndi: I love The Gossip and I love The Cliks. I would love to write with Lucas (of The Cliks) one day. We talk about it a lot but haven’t had the chance. Beth from The Gossip and I started writing a song together a few years back. I like The Nationals, too. I love The Hives and collaborated with them. I would love to work with The White Stripes. Jack White? I mean come on! David: How has life changed since your early days as an artist with Captain Lou? Artistically? Personally? Cyndi: I think at my core I am the same person. I think when I first became famous it affected me, but soon after I got my act together. I still have the same friends for years and years, of course my family is bigger now. I have a gorgeous husband and happening little 12-year-old son, but my life is the same/similar. Artistically, of course, life experiences affected me as a song writer and I think I am better now than ever. I hope I am. I’ve been practicing my craft for a long time.

David: You have a lot of gay fans in Atlanta (and around the world) who can’t wait to see you in concert August 6. Why are you so gay friendly? Cyndi: Because you are all my friends and family. And I think that maybe my LGBT fans can relate to me as I am a bit of an outsider, too. Not sure, but I love the community and the community has always been good and supportive of me, too. David: “True Colors” is just one of your many songs that inspire a lot of young (and older) gay fans. What do you say to young people who are afraid to be openly gay? Cyndi: Be true to yourself and not afraid to be who you are inside and out. David: What are you working on next? Cyndi: I am currently touring around the country on the Memphis Blues CD and will also be touring the rest of the world. I plan on being on the road off and on through next summer. I am also writing the music for the Broadway adaptation of the British film “Kinky Boots,” and Harvey Fierstein is writing the book. Jerry Mitchell is the director. I am writing an autobiography that will be released via Simon & Schuster in late 2011 and inked a deal with Mark Burnett Productions for my own reality series set to launch sometime in 2011, too. I want to continue the work of the True Colors Fund and our Give A Damn Campaign to get straight people to stand up for the gay community so that all of us have civil rights and America can be the country it’s supposed to be where we are all treated the same. 21 davidatlanta

Move It! Although you may not have followed through on that New Year’s resolution to exercise, there’s no reason not to start now. Many people think that getting exercise has to be a big production with a gym membership or home equipment, clothing and accessories. There is also the common misconception that good exercise takes a lot of time. Not so. If you’re just starting out, are overweight or just completely out of shape, take your time in getting up to speed. If you start out too quickly or intensely, you can get discouraged and quit altogether. Instead, work up to the ideal work out time and intensity.

36 davidatlanta

Walking is a great place to begin. Start with a trip around the block after work. Not only will you be getting activity but you can use it as a time to “de-stress” and forget the workday’s routine. Another alternative is dancing. Cue up Cher, Pink! or your current favorite diva. Keep moving through a few songs and you’ll be well on your way to getting your heart rate up and your muscles and joints loosened up. Aim for getting up and moving 5 days a week. Make it part of your daily routine. Keeping a journal of what you’ve done when allows you to track your progress.

advice

Momma Mona Dear Momma Mona, I liked what you had to say about a partner not coming out to his family. Some gays feel very strongly that coming out must and should be 100%. I’m now in my early 60s and remember well when coming out could get you fired at work and, in my case, disinherited. That’s why I selected a college several states away and then accepted work on the opposite coast. I think this is rational behavior. While I went through some feelings of shame early on, I began to think about it as a double life, like a double agent, and reveled in my expertise. I visited about twice a year and enjoyed keeping in touch, but I never had a coming out talk with my family. Whether my father knew or suspected before he died, I’ll never know, but frankly it doesn’t really matter. I am comfortable in my own skin and don’t feel a need to make any other statement. Thanks for the vent…Fine Inside Good for you Fine Inside! I especially like your creativity in you double agent identity. Yes, times have changed greatly in the past 10-15 years regarding gay rights, especially in the work place. Now gays are stereotyped as creative and a boost to many businesses. I recently heard a straight male say he was thrilled to have a gay couple move into the neighborhood because they would beautify the property! Back to 20 years ago, I had a dear friend who was an early victim of AIDS. When he died, his partner of several years was not just kicked out of their apartment by his family, but dead-bolted out without the benefit of his own furniture! My friend’s family took his body from Atlanta to somewhere way up north for a family funeral in which the partner, of course, was not allowed, and sold their condo and furnishings (it was in my friend’s name). Sadly, there are numerous stories about how basic human rights and, in my southern mind simple etiquette, were horribly violated and unfortunately there are still many issues that will require battle. It’s been a long road. For a succinct time line of the Gay Rights Movement, check out http://www.infoplease. com/ipa/A0761909.html.

Hey Momma Mona, If our parents really loved us, why can’t they accept who we are? My dad started calling me sissy from as early as I can remember. He put me down, knocked me around and just generally hated me. Thankfully, my mom divorced and left that SOB when I was 7, but the scars of being hated by my own father still bugs me. My mom is great and coming out with her just evolved rather than having to even think about it. I

think we are much closer because of what we both went through and I don’t have a better fan than my mom. Except now. I’ve fallen in love with Tom (not real name) and introduced him to mom about a month ago. While she was happy and supportive that I had found love before she met him, for some reason she made an about face and has become snippy and very suspicious about him and how he treats me. What gives?! Please comment,…Confused Dear Confused, The first thing that popped out to me is your phrase “…and how he treats me.” As a mother myself, if anyone mistreated my babies, it would take an act of God or Nature to stop me from expressing myself. In fact, my son was in a relationship where the girlfriend made snoddy remarks about him constantly, as if she were so superior. Well that does not fly for Momma Mona. I chose my timing and audience, and when she made yet another negative comment, I very charmingly and innocently asked if her comments meant that she did not really care for my son because that’s what it sounds like to me. I went on in the same innocent and caring monologue that her many, many cruel and mean remarks about my son just hurts my heart for the both of them because neither can really be happy if one strives to minimize and rip apart the integrity of the other. Needless to say, this did not go over well for her or my son, at least at first. They broke up very shortly thereafter. Although my poor son was hurt, he did see the light. Didn’t thank me, but he did see the light. Some people have negative pathologies and will bring you down to, not just to their level, but below them so they can feel better about themselves, superior. (Google Narcissistic Personality Disorder) Evidently, your mom is struggling with what she views as a troublesome choice of partner. Momma Mona tends to be a little Freudian in that when we are not able to figure out emotional issues from our very early years, we tend to seek out the same circumstances in order to figure it out as an adult. Does this make sense? Given that your father was not just rejecting of you, but physically abusive, and you perhaps have not completely resolved this emotional issue within, could it be that you have selected Tom to try to work out this early life drama? This would explain your mother’s change of behavior, especially if she sees or senses Tom to be anything like her ex. My son’s father was like the snoddy-talking girl. Even me, Momma Mona, originally married my abusive mother. This is actually a very common psychological phenomenon. Then again, I could be way off base here. Mama Mona’s short and sweet advice is to ask your mother what’s bothering her about Tom. Now that I’ve broached the extreme possibility, anything she says will be a possible relief ----- yes?

What’s This About AmsterdamAtlanta Friday Nights? By Marco Guerrero, Amsterdam General Manager

There have been some exciting and progressive changes at Amsterdam Atlanta. Beginning in mid-April the dance floor reopened on an every-Friday-night basis. The club brought in local DJ Steve James to play a unique mix of vocal, house and high energy dance music. Rather than a split bar format with video in the main bar and dance music presented only to the dance floor, this change was accomplished with great success providing a uniform audio environment throughout the establishment. The club has also made extensive structural changes to create a dynamic floor level DJ booth that spans both the video bar and the dance floor. Additional structural, lighting and visual changes were implemented, creating a unique and fresh new environment. Three large screen video projectors have been added to the dance floor, providing a unique ambient video presentation. Since making these changes a number of high profile events have taken place. The Human Rights Campaign and Showtime official “The Real L Word” premiere and fund raiser was a great success. The Memorial Day weekend special guest appearance by Hot Rod Killer DJ (Rod 46 davidatlanta

Llaneza) of Friday nights at the Jungle fame was equally successful. DJay McCracken was added to the mix on June 18th bringing an incredibly unique and different customer crowd. Amsterdam Atlanta kicked it up a notch on the 2nd of July. The infamous Party Like A Rock Star, Inc., teamed up with power house DJ Vicki Powell and DJay McCracken and brought the house down as if it were New Year’s Eve. On Friday July 30, The Leo Party is coming, hosted by the Leo birthday men, Jay McCracken, Dan Givens, John Chambless and Vance Risner. The hosts are bringing together the triple force power of DJ Vicki Powell (presently voted best local DJ), DJay McCracken and DJ Mike Pope, another power house local DJ hot off the tails of the Joining Hearts Patrons and Sponsors VIP party. Three mega DJ’s all under one roof the same night for an outrageous over-thetop no cover event! Sponsored by Spiked Productions and Personal Paparazzi ATL presented as a fund raiser for Chris Kids. This will be a red carpet VIP event with entrance photography by Personal Paparazzi ATL. A little bit of glitz and a whole lot of glam, the place to see and be seen.

the brent star report

The STARs of the Century! There was a time when someone would ask you, “Hey, where is THE biggest drag show in Atlanta?” and you would say “oh girl, at Backstreets, duh!’. Well child now, whenever someone asks you that tell them, “at THE JUNGLE (on Mondays) for The Stars of the Century show! Every Monday, it’s packed and you know the Jungle ain’t a small place. The Queen of the Jungle (and show director) is who I call a ‘smart business woman’ and the very well known Niesha Dupree. I heard she runs that show with an iron fist. I’m going to have to catch up with her and get an exclusive interview…you know how we are in nosey America, we got to know the “behind the scenes” of this show which is also now the longest running show in Atlanta! Hold on for a second, I’m trying to watch the stunning Necole Luv Dupree on stage…her stage presence demands your attention…and your money! I noticed the ‘tipping’ they do at this show seems to be more intense than the other shows I’ve seen in this city, not to say we don’t get PAID at other shows outside this one, but there’s a certain tip etiquette that you can feel going on up in here. They give the entertainer a few moments of the song, then usually one person walks up first then EVERYONE walks up and get in line! A LONG line and yes, there I was “in line” waiting for about an hour to tip the girls! I’m SURE all the Stars in the show EACH make at least $1500 in tips (after taxes!)…ok I exaggerated..$1499…better! Now someone is about to do Erykah Badu’s hot song WINDOW SEAT…I like that song and OH SHIT it’s Raquel Lord doing the song and she just got butt ass naked!!! Um…where is the duck tape? Yes, I’ve been told she still has her lollipop but ah…where?! Oh ok, someone standing next to me just told me that her nakedness is a part of the artistic and political statement that Erykah does herself in her ‘window seat’ video---(now u know I youtubed that video and sure enough, she also get’s butt ass naked!). Stasha Sanchez (NOT related to Dirty Sanchez) and Jasmine Bonet were, as always, sexybeautiful and eloquent. Just ONE of the things that ALL of these girls have in common is they’re multiple pageant title holders and are internationally known. After each show, there’s a ‘sign in’ 66 davidatlanta

table in the lobby where you can meet and greet all of these stars! And ANOTHER thing that sets this show apart from the others is the fact that this is the only drag show in this city that has a few ‘men’ doing…well…’men’. Monte St. James (returning tonight as special guest) showed out doing Usher’s new song wearing some kind of sexy, hot Alien/Avatar/ Party Monster outfit. On cast, you have R’darius Black, the dancing talents of Christopher Iman to name a few and of course, the legendary Joe Jackson. Now, to complete this package, and just when you thought you’ve seen it all, this show is emceed by the hilarious comedy team of Dominique Rashad and probably THE most popular drag performer in this city, Ms Sophia! The chemistry between those two is simply AMAZING! Comedy isn’t easy to do as it is, but to do it so well with a partner is very impressive. These two are all over the place and they never get old. Watching it for the first time you’d think they had a script. “Well you already know Brent, Sophia and I just know each other, we’ve been doing this for 12 years.” Dominique said in a business diva/eloquent way. (I remember Sophia used to call her Oprah). You know, I think that’s important folks to see those two work so well together especially when ppl ASSUME drag performers don’t get along or they don’t know how to share the stage. Ms Sophia was a regular on V-103 and has been performing ER’WHERE so no wonder it’s so hard for me to catch up with the funny gal so we can do one ole’ interview. Well folks, that’s my time, and if you live in Atlanta and haven’t seen this show, don’t put it off any longer! Look for me, I’ll be the one sitting in the ‘window seat’. Shout outs: Princess Charles new show called ABSOLUTELY FLAWLESS on Fridays at Bellissima starting late July featuring Summer Knight, Shavonna B. Brooks and more! Happy Birthday Mary Edith Pitts! Where to catch Brent Star: Tuesdays at SHOUT, Saturdays at Tijuana Garage, every other Friday at BELLISSIMA and Thursdays and Sundays once a month at Burkharts and everywhere else that pays!

Luke liked kissing. He’d been told by many amorous companions that he was good at it. Luke found in Atlanta, though, that not everyone was as skilled at the art as he was. Luke had endured kissing many frogs: he remembered the guy that lived in the high-rise on Juniper; he had a tongue that was long, sinewy and slick with slobber. This tongue leapt around like a reptilian and Luke felt like defended the inside of his mouth from this invading tongue. Luke remembered another guy, a guy with some tomato plants in a garden behind a house on Monroe. He claimed to work from home. He had guitars and a big black Suburban and wore Timberland boots. He claimed to be only six years older than Luke. This older man with the tomato plants in a garden behind a house on Monroe rarely shaved and, when he kissed Luke, he kissed him with aggression. Like felt like he was kissing wet sandpaper, the shaving stubble rubbed his skin red and, because he was pressed up into his face, Luke could taste the breathy aftermath of onion rings consumed at dinner. Luke had wanted to order nachos. He did not call this older man back after that night. But still, Luke liked kissing. He liked it gentle at first but then he liked it rough and aggressive. Luke didn’t like teeth. He didn’t want any teeth involved in the art of his kiss. Luke didn’t like biting or angry kissing. Luke didn’t like slobber 68 davidatlanta

r F r o f and he didn’t like to swallow. Luke believed the kiss started with the lips. Luke endeavored to start every kiss at the lips. He believed it took a special skill to kiss nicely and properly; it took patience, experience and timing; most important was the right timing; to insert and introduce the tongue into the kiss. Up until then, Luke used his tongue for talking: Luke said, “So now I’m back in Atlanta.” On this evening, Luke sipped Bombay Sapphire, “What do you do here?” “I’m sorry, but I don’t understand.” Luke realized his momentary companion had stood there listening to Luke go and on. In his one-sided monologue, Luke had covered his childhood, his rebellious teenage years as well as an abridged version of his ubiquitous coming-out saga. Luke had not engaged the tall dark handsome man beside him in two-way conversation. Luke asked him, “I hear an accent. Do you have an accent?” “Yes,” he said, “I have a French accent.” “Are you French?” “Yes.” “Oh,” Luke finished off his drink, “I’ve never been to France. What brings you to Atlanta?”

Finance,” he said. “Do you live near here?” “I live around the corner.” The Frenchman said, “I leave for Paris on Monday.” “Do you like kissing?” “Yes, very much,” he said, “for me, it is all about the kissing.” Luke appraised him: the Frenchman wore black jeans that fit snug and tight around his groin; obviously European jeans; and his shirt covered once-grand but now retiring biceps and a slight gut Luke imagined he could ignore under dim lighting. “Good,” Luke said, “Let’s go.” As they walked through the nighttime streets of Midtown, the Frenchman asked, “What is your name?” Luke answered and said, “I don’t know your name, either.” “Gaston,” said the Frenchman, “my name is Gaston.” “You mean, like, that arrogant guy in ‘Beauty and the Beast’?” “What is this, ‘Beauty and the Beast’?” “It’s a Disney movie.” Luke said, “A cartoon.” “Ah, yes,” Gaston did not even smirk, “we do not

know American movies in France. Our tastes in cinema are highly developed.” There was a breeze in the hot, sexy night air and; with this breeze; Luke caught a whiff of manly sweat and body odor. “But what about your sense of personal hygiene?” Luke asked, “I heard in France you guys are, like, really far behind on that. I heard the women over there don’t even shave their legs.” “Don’t be absurd.” Gaston said, “We shave everything in France, and then we make it smooth with lotions and creams and then we make it smell enchanting with perfume and cologne. Chanel number five, you know it?” “I don’t wear it myself.” “It can cover any stench.” They arrived at the entrance to the building that Luke lived in. Luke took out his key and asked, “So, what do you want to do to me when we get upstairs?” Gaston followed Luke into an elevator. As the doors to the elevator swished to close, Gaston opened his mouth to provide answer and…** NEXT EPISODE: “G is for UGA” 69 davidatlanta

Kimberley Locke:

Under the Strobelight By Max Jiminez

Kimberley Locke has come a long way in the years since her appearance on American Idol, where she placed third behind Reuben Studdard. In seven years, she’s had eight Top 20 smashes, three #1 Dance hits and has recorded three #1 Christmas songs. Her latest single, “Strobelight”, is collaborative effort with American Idol judge Randy Jackson’s new dance label, Dream Merchant 21. The single debuted at #30 in early summer, and rockets up the charts into the top ten this week.

To promote the release, Locke is hitting clubs across the country and will perform Good Morning America on August 18th. We spoke with the pop diva from her recording studio in Los Angeles. portion of her success, I will be extremely happy. Randy recognizes a resurgence of the dance genre and wants to be a part of this music history with his label, Dream Merchant 21. Gladly, he has chosen me to go along with him! David: What draws you to dance music? Kimberley: My fans. They have shown me time and time again that this is where they love me. David: What do you hope to contribute to the genre? Kimberley: I only hope to contribute great music that people will remember and appreciate for years to come. That’s what it’s all about for me. David: Is their pressure being the first artist on Randy’s new label? Kimberley: Oh yes! I want to deliver and so does Randy. Randy obviously believes in my talent as an artist and I want to live up to that. David: Were you always close with Randy? On the show, you seemed closest with Paula. Kimberley: I don’t think I was particularly close to any one judge but I have always had a great deal of respect for Randy. He is such a well

rounded person in this industry. He’s done it all and he is still doing it. He can relate on all levels from artist to executive and everything in between. That’s why I love working with him. David: Why did you decide to do a singles-only deal with Dream Merchant 21? Kimberley: A singles deal was the best for all parties involved. In today’s world of digital downloads, where the consumer can download only the songs that they want, why not give them what they want every time? A banging single! David: What do you plan to explore in your next tracks? Kimberley: Who knows? I am excited to find out myself. More dance, for sure. David: Did you ever imagine the gay community would embrace you like they have? Kimberley: I would never have guessed it in a million years, but I must say that I am so glad about it. The only way I can explain it is that the gay community has such an appreciation for singers. In these days of auto tune, I appreciate people who appreciate singers. David: Good luck with Strobelight, Kimberley! Kimberley: See you on the dance floor! 73 davidatlanta

bitch session

You can’t just make fart noises out of your mouth and call it a Louis Armstrong impression.

Just because i am new to the drag world doesn’t mean i don’t deserve a chance. All you queens take a look back at your careers, none of you started at the top. Help a new girl out instead of judging and tearing me apart when i ask for help. I Love the way your ass jiggles when i am hitting it from behind. All of these men and no one to take home. Crying shame.

I’ve had one other orgasm like that in my entire life...and I was alone... Why is it so hard to find escorts that give college discounts? Education is expensive, we’re on a budget here! If you want to be known as the type of person who does all of the work, maybe you should start to do some of the work. If you boyfriend has bad breath, knock it our with our lovely gift basket containing toothpaste, extra strength mouthwash, dental floss and an assortment of refreshing chewing gum.

Hats are hot on guys, but don’t remove it if you’re bald.

I find geeks hot. At least I know they are after more than just a onetime thing. I had sex with my best friend while my boyfriend was passed out drunk. Maybe it’s time he lays off the booze and gets out of the bars. Why is it that after Pride, we take down our rainbow flags? If we are so proud, we ought to leave them up.

Since I loved you for your values, but those turned out to be a sham, what do you think will hold us together? Why are the people we are so drawn to, the people we should live without?

I am so disenchanted with a “community” that’s all about body types, notches in the belt and the rush to show how proud we are of our vacuous lifestyle. Being a slut is not an accomplishment.
