De-Mystifying Property Assessments

An important point to note is that a reduction in the assessment does not always reduce the actual bill. Other factors such as millage rates, homestead exemptions, and other exemptions will also affect the final tax bill.

There is so much misinformation regarding in town property tax assessments. I wanted to give an overview to de-clutter the property tax landscape in light of recent state legislative streamlining tax initiatives.
Last June, then Gov. Sonny Purdue signed into law “The Property Tax Assessment and Appeals Reform Bill” to help homeowners seeking property tax relief during turbulent economic market meltdowns. This new statewide statue signifies a sweeping overhaul of how the values of homes and business properties are assessed, including areas where significant distressed sales have occurred.
The Property Tax Assessment and Appeals Reform Bill Highlights: • • • • • • • • •
Requires annual assessment notices sent to all properties with right to appeal Requires annual assessment notices to include the estimated property’s taxes
Only “current use of property” determines Fair Market Value
Longer appeal period of 45 days, rather than 30 days Automatic taxpayer victory on appeals when county fails to respond within 45 days
Taxpayer must be given access to all data used in determining property value
Sales price cannot exceed property value for following tax year Must consider any open-market sale as arm’s length transaction – including short sales
Additional training and qualifications required for tax officials

When paper records are transferred to databases, many factual errors (age, bathrooms, upper/lower levels, square footage, parking, finishes-amenities, land, utilities, location, sales) can be made. Unfortunately, assessors rarely confirm any data unless petitioned to do so. Quick-tips to uncover assessment inequities:
Establishing Grade/Condition: The grade is not measured but is subject to the assessor’s opinion that can directly impact values.
Calculating Square Footage (Upper/Lower floors): A ratio is applied that can artificially inflate livable area. When measurements are finally done, rounding up to the nearest foot tends is typical inflating both square footage and taxes.
Understanding Sales-to-Assessment Ratios: Not utilizing true market-distressed sale transactions and correct neighborhood codes affect assessments. Understanding Tax Assessment Uniformity: Similar comparables properties (age, size, style, location, construction) should have comparable assessed values. In summary, understanding the very basics in the property assessment landscape is a sound approach in identifying unfair values. A sensible property tax plan can do wonders for the pocket book. Tim Etherington, President, PropertyTax-Reductions can be reached at (687)995.5537 or info@Property-TaxReductions. For common property tax assessor mistakes in establishing property values check out Property-Tax-Reductions.com. SEE AD --->
t or
In town property tax assessments are typically based on mass appraisal statistical analysis, where no on-site property inspection occurs. With this type of assembly-line appraisal production methods, substantial evaluation errors can occur.
bu
This is especially true for in town neighborhoods. Tax assessors have been slow to react to free-falling home sale prices. Once an appeal is determined to be warranted, the homeowner should then decide how best to formulate a winning strategy to lower inequitable assessments.
tri
Given the current in town sluggish real estate market, property owners may want to consider annually monitoring property tax assessments in order to make more informed decisions about whether to appeal their assessments.

Je sling. So skanky AND patriotic. Now that scene may appeal to some gays, but it didn’t do a thing for me except make me think of Buffalo Bill in “The Silence of the Lambs,” even though he kidnapped and killed girls. Whatever dude, let your freak flag fly. These sites and gay life are all still new to me. I spent the first 30+ years of my life almost completely in the closet before moving four years ago to Atlanta, the gay capital of the South. I’m out now but still adjusting. It isn’t easy sometimes, but I know it was the best thing that could have happened to me. As hard as it may be for younger gays to believe, I never had any openly gay friends growing up. Sure, there were plenty of people who suspected I was gay. And my gaydar was up, detecting other closeted family around me. There were always bullies ready to drop what they were doing to kick my ass or shove me into a locker, although few ever did. I was pretty good at acting straight, still am. There were obvious clues that I might be gay, like having mostly female friends but no “girlfriend” or my love of musicals. A few people had the nerve to ask, but I always denied it.

Raj isn’t slutty. At all. He always controls how much he drinks. He has a good job and is very responsible. He may not live the stereotypical Atlanta gay man’s life, although we did meet on Adam-4Adam. Oh, and he hides his face in his profile pic, too.
.
A few weeks ago I made a new gay friend from India. I’ll call him “Raj.” He also came to Atlanta “to be gay” and have a better chance to live “his life.” He told his parents he just wanted U.S. work experience. He’s in his mid 20s, and it’s so inspiring to me that he’s willing to live his life, coming from such a strict culture. He knows he is risking a very strong possibility that his family will disown him. Last week he found out that his only gay friend back in India committed suicide. He knows all-too-well that in his homeland it is not acceptable to be gay.

One guy who chose to show his face sent me a picture of his . . . wait for it . . . sex sling, hanging across his room, just as casual as a hammock hanging on a breezy porch in the Bahamas. It was like, “No big deal, here’s my sling. Come on over and let’s lube up and have some fun.” He even had bondage toys hanging on the wall and a giant American flag hanging behind the

The most peculiar profiles to me are from guys who just show their dicks as their profile pics. Is it symbolic? Are they dicks in real life? Try as I may, I find it weird to have a conversation with a dick. Sure, I might talk to my own once in a while, as in, “Don’t let me down now” or “Really, you choose this moment to be alert?” I don’t want to have a conversation with someone else’s, especially online. I start wondering if the body and face attached to said penis are hideous or if it even belongs to that person.
oc
There are a plethora of these sites. Most are free and accessible right from my iPhone. They are all so similar, and you can easily find the same profiles from site-to-site.
nc
I didn’t expect much intelligent conversation. It isn’t really the place for that anyway. Most guys get the ball rolling with, “Hey,” or the ever-popular, “Sup.” Some jump right into, “Top or Bottom?” or “Looking?” or “Unlock?” Then there are guys like “C,” whose opening line is, “Hey sexy, wanna come over and sit on my face?”
Ha
So there I was in front of my iMac clicking around. I wondered if some guys spend any time at all choosing pics for their profiles. So many are faceless torsos or legs, a random muscle, even an armpit.
A.
All the TV networks were blasting reports of the biggest news story to happen in years, that Osama Bin Laden had been captured and killed. As a good American I should have been tuned in and attentive, but I was more interested in mindless, flirty chit-chat with strangers online, in between eating Doritos and watching “Chelsea Lately.”
e
o many gay men spend their lives hiding who there are. This occurred to me this week as I was checking out some of the cruising sites. Strictly for journalistic research, of course. Oh, who am I kidding? I was cruising, too. Why not? I’m single.

The Brent Star Report
My Paparazzi
T
hese days, you don’t have to be Britney Spears, Beyonce, or a big ‘winner’ like Charlie Sheen in order to have your pictures constantly taken everywhere you go. In fact, the “Paparazzi” has changed; they’re now everywhere and anywhere as long as it’s a crowd with a bunch of camera phones. Like, take my outings last week, starting with my gig as guest co host with the hilarious Bubba D. Licious at The Jungle for the P.A.L.S. Bingo game that they do every 2nd Wednesday of the month. The mixed crowd is packed with str8 folks who just LOVE drag! It felt like every damn table wanted a photo…oh I don’t mind, this ain’t new. Child, I get plenty of training every year when I play the Easter Bunny (yes, I still do Easter Bunny gigs, shit I ain’t rich yet) and all the cute daddies wanting to sit next to me….um, the bunny,…while a picture is being taken for their kid. At the Jungle, same thang, “oh wait till I show my neighbors, or put this on facebook”. Of course I don’t mind, besides they might as well snap away since I’m always sitting on some str8 guys lap (oops)…actually, check out my default facebook pic now, and you’ll see my happy ass sitting on some random str8 guy’s lap (and honey, he had some BIG lenses). Ok on Thursday, I was at my weekly Bingo show out in East Atlanta and just about every time I call out a number, there they go again, snap, snap, snap. This gig is from 8-10 and we have so much fun. It’s at a restaurant called Matador Cantina, and again, it’s a mixed crowd. But it’s understandable, it’s not midtown. Here I am, glittered up with a crazy costume in a nice quite neighborhood talking about “B-6 or O-69”! I love their ‘dranks’ out there btw, even though I had never heard of a “jalapeno tequila” but let me tell you, a shot of that will scare any allergies out of you! Oh, and they also give out cash prizes for Bingo winnings. Cynthia Bailey from Atlanta Real Housewives seemed to stop in a lot, hmm I wonder if she lives there. I’ll try to get a picture of her and an interview for y’all next time she stops in! On Friday, I was the guest charity judge and performer for DRAGNIQUE 2’s finale. It was held at a very PACKED Jungle that included tons of celebrities, local and on TV. The snap shots started with my routine, then even more when I sat next to the celebrity judge of the evening, Ms. Mimi Imfirst from the RuPaul Drag Races. She’s a fun performer who gives you
14 davidatlanta
exactly what you saw on TV including picking up some random boy from the crowd and spinning him around as the crowd goes up in a roar (and that guys’s blood pressure I’m sure) except there was no RuPaul there to tell her it was wrong to do that. I was actually sitting between her and two of the Braxton Sisters, Towanda and Trina! I heard there show is very entertaining (The Braxton Sisters), but it was so much going on this night I failed to get their info so I could interview them. My first question would have been WHY were they there? In the meantime, I want to give a special shout out to the winner of Dragnique 2, the outrageous new comer, Rapture Divine. She truly gave it her all and touched our hearts with her final number that included her boyfriend, their HIV status and the announcement of their surviving partnership despite the status of 17+ years.
On Saturday afternoon, I joined forces with other entertainers in this city to participate in the Pink Cadets (softball team) 2nd annual Bats N Rouge game at Piedmont Park. It’s for Susan G. Komen for the Cure. It was 3 games and 6 rainbow teams. I was on the Red team. I started not to do it because I suck at softball…then I got to thinking, what’s so wrong about sucking?....crickets. Our team lost though to the Yellow team but I felt like a winner because I actually made it to first base! (Huge improvement over last year). The snap shots started this time with this family that I feel bad about not remembering where I know the parents from. The parents came to me first and was like “hey Brent Star” and of course I spoke back, then they gave me a hug and mentioned the kids wanted to take a picture with ‘Brent Star’. Now this was actually refreshing because this time they didn’t say “with the Easter Bunny”. Until next week bitchesssssss, don’t read the girls, instead read The Brent Star Report! Where to catch Brent Star: Sundays at Cowtippers, Thursdays at Matador Cantina in East Atlanta, Friday at Jungle for Dragnique, Saturdays at Tijuana Garage, occasionally at Burkharts and everywhere else that pays! www.facebook.com/Mr.BrentStar

Dragamundo Monday nights Drag and Tequila for a cause!!
E
very Monday at Las Margaritas, we will continue a tradition started by Nikimotos Dragamaki, now Dragamundo, with the original mama de Dragamaki, Bubba Dee, doing her famous “Pearl” number as the finale of the show. With great cast members such as Angelica D’Paige, Allissah Brooks, and the newest edition, Phoenix from RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 3. Dragamundo is newer and sexier, with a lot more excitement than the original show with new cast members performing to benefit non-profit organizations every week. Proceeds from cash raffle, our specialty drink Twister and tequila shots will be donated to each week’s charity. Because of Dragamundo, over $1,000 has been donated to charity through Las Margaritas. Various charities which have received monies, include P.A.L.S., M.I.S.T.E.R., AIDS Vaccine 200, The Flaming Sugarbaker Sisters, The Amorettes, Joining Hearts, and The Red Cross, to name a few!
This Monday, Dragamundo would like to welcome new cast member, Phoenix, and the dancing diva, Shawna Brooks. The show will benefit M.I.S.T.E.R. project represented by Chandler Bearden. Don’t forget, to stick around to hear our DJ before and after the show so that you can mingle with all the mami’s and papi’s! As always, we also will offer our $2 tacos (with over 30 types to choose from), as well as our kick-ass Twister, Margaritas and shots for a cause! We also want to thank all of those who came out to support our community on Cinco de Mayo. Las Margaritas raised $2,500 which was donated to the American Red Cross Earthquake and Tsunami Relief fund. So, who said Monday nights were a drag?

A Star Is Born By Jesse A. Hancock
B
eing a pop star isn’t always as glamorous and fun as it may seem. It is a job like any other and as such requires hard work and dedication. It also helps to be in the right places with the right people and, of course, to have a tremendous amount of appreciation for fans. Just ask 21-year-old Eryn Woods. You may have noticed her fiery hair onstage somewhere around town or during PRIDE. You may have heard her sing songs like “Fantastic Break-up” or “It’s Me.” You may even have heard her mentioned in social circles or seen her on Twitter or Facebook. She may be petite, but she is making a huge impact in the music scene.
She recently filmed her first music video and recorded songs in London for her new EP, which is set for a May release. She also just performed on a mini concert tour with Stiletto Effect. Busier than ever, Eryn’s new single, “This My Shh,” is currently available for download on iTunes. Even though Woods is on her way to stardom, she still
finds time to work a 9-5 job in business management. She said she enjoys the work because it helps her learn the business side of what she is doing so that once she gets further along in her career she can be responsible and “better prepared” to handle it all financially.
She has also learned about responsibility from her family. Originally from Shreveport, LA, Woods said she and her family moved around often and lived in Cincinnati for a while. No matter where she moved, however, singing was always a big part of her life.
“I started singing the minute I could,” said Woods. “I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t singing or performing or doing something. I used to sing gospel songs in church. I have about ten years of vocal training and about six or seven years experience in musical theater. The last show I did in school was ‘Annie,’ and I was Annie. My ultimate goal is to be on Broadway. I love what I’m doing now, but I’d like to be able to davidatlanta 27
use my background in dancing, acting and singing. I’d love to one day be like Kristen Chenoweth. I love her. She is amazing.” Woods has two older sisters who live in Shreveport and three younger brothers who live with her parents in Kansas City. Her family has always encouraged her to pursue her dream, she said, even though they have cautioned her to be practical.
“I’ve never had a back-up plan,” said Woods. “My parents were like, ‘I don’t know about that, Eryn.’ My mom supports me 100%, but it is still hard for her. In a way, I think it’s a great thing that I know what I want to do at my age. I am putting my whole heart into my music, and I am so determined to get to where I want to be.” Today Woods is completely focused on her career and keeping in touch with her fans.
“I’m working on my career 24-7. I’m on Facebook all the time. I love talking to fans on there. I have fans from Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Switzerland and London. I try hard to stay connected. It makes me happy to see other people excited.” Woods writes many of her songs and co-writes some with other writers. She also co-produces when she goes into the studio. She tries to write songs that are happy but said she realizes people listen to music all the time: when they are sad, happy, in love, out of a relationship, or maybe when they are in the car and
Just because I have a red Mohawk and piercings doesn’t mean I’m this crazy goth girl. I used to have black hair. I don’t judge anybody because I was judged when I was growing up and finding who I was.
inspired by it all. I’ve been compared to Cyndi Lauper, which I take as a huge compliment. She is amazing. I can relate to people like Cyndi and Gwen Stefani because they have been around forever and still produce great music, tour and perform. They still do what they love to do. And they have always been themselves. Cyndi has never copied anyone else. She has always just been herself and has never cared if people laughed at the way she sounded or that her hair was out of whack. She can do anything and her fans will love her. That’s what I love. That’s how people succeed. If I was just going to be another artist and copy someone else, I wouldn’t get far. I want people to like me for me. That means me as a person and me as an artist. David Magazine: How do you decide what songs to put on your CD?
Eryn: I’m more focused on putting out singles right now, not a full CD of songs. My team and I decided to do something sort of like what Robyn did on ‘Body Talk 1’ and ‘Body Talk 2.’ We want to release music in snippets to keep people interested, so it isn’t like an album coming out and having to wait another year. Now that I have a publicist and people are started to know who I am, I’m getting a lot more performances. I performed several gigs in London. I have some shows coming up in New York, and I’m doing a lot here in town. I actually opened for Robyn on Feb. 12. I’m working with David Magazine to perform at Kaos Macon. David Magazine: Opening for Robyn must have been a fun experience for you. How did that opportunity come about?
Eryn: It was so exciting. I performed in Milwaukee last November and opened for a band called Hey, Monday. It was a great venue and the people really liked me. When I saw Robyn was going to be performing there, I contacted her promoter and they were like, ‘Yea, we’d love for you to open for her.’ She has always been one of my favorites. When I was in 7th or 8th grade I started listening to her music. Her old music is more pop, not as electro or dance as it is today. Her producers tried to make her like Britney Spears, but she’s a lot different now. David Magazine: How do you like being a pop star?
“For example, I met with one of my song writers not too long ago and told her everything I was going through at that time, what I was feeling from bad to good,” said Woods. “Then we sat down and vocally produced a song that night. It came straight from the notes of everything I said. Now when I sing that song I not only feel it, but also other people can relate to it. That’s important to me. If other people can’t relate to songs, why would they want to listen to them?”
Eryn: People always say they are jealous of my life. I love my life, but don’t get it twisted. Just because you see all the ups of fame and having money, it is not easy. There are some days that I am lonely or feeling down. Or someone might say they don’t like my music or my hair. There are always downs, like in every job. I try my best to make people see the good. So often the bad overshadows the good. I want to inspire others, not make them depressed and sad. Not everything in life is happy and joyful, but if I can make people smile and feel excited, that keeps me going.
Eryn: I grew up listening to Cyndi Lauper, Madonna, Pat Benetar and other stars from the 80s, and I was
Eryn: My aunts and uncles and my sister love to sing. None of them have gotten into the business as far as

David Magazine: Who are your musical influences, and do you compare yourself to anyone?

David Magazine: Are there other performers in your family?
I have. One of my cousins is starting to get into the business, and my family is calling her ‘the next Eryn.’ She’s a senior in high school, and it’s almost like she is reliving my life and the things I’ve done so far, which is kind of cool. My whole family has always been supportive. They have come to all my performances. Whenever I wanted to do a show in front of my family, my aunts and uncles always tried to be there. David Magazine: Is Atlanta the right place for you to be right now?
Eryn: Yes and no. I’ve been here about two and a half years. Recording an album here is great. Everyone records here, and Atlanta has become sort of the new New York or L.A. for recording. It’s very urban. One thing I love is that the gay community here has picked me up and been so supportive. I love them and give them all my support. I thank them for coming to my shows and having me at their venues and letting me be part of their events. I’ve performed at Fort Lauderdale PRIDE, New York PRIDE, and Atlanta PRIDE. It has been awesome. We’re also having a huge event soon at the Peachtree Tavern for the Greek life college community. Those two fan bases, the gay community and college students, are what will carry me in Atlanta right now. I have also performed at some venues where mostly hip hop artists perform, and the crowds loved it there, but there is not really a huge area here for my type of music. There are not too many performers like me here. David Magazine: Why do you think gay fans love you so much?
Eryn: I think it’s because I’m very open. I’m not close-minded at all. I love having fun, and from what I’ve seen the gay community loves having fun. Also, I do look different. I’m not the stereotypical girl. I don’t think gays like being stereotyped. We are all just people. It’s not like, ‘You do this because you are whatever.’ Just because I have a red Mohawk and piercings doesn’t mean I’m this crazy goth girl. I don’t judge anybody. I was judged when I was growing up and finding who I was. I’ve changed. In high school I was this little blonde-haired preppy girl. I found the things that I like and things I don’t like. I’m straight, but I sometimes feel like an outcast, which I know gays often feel as well. David Magazine: Why do you call your fans “kupcakes”?
Eryn: I don’t eat a lot of sweets because I try to watch my figure, but I love sweets. I’m not saying it is a bad thing, but other artists refer to their fans as ‘monsters’ or ‘witches’ or whatever they want to call them. I don’t want to think of my fans like that. One of the reasons I call my fans ‘kupcakes’ is because whenever actual cupcakes are involved in whatever you’re doing, it’s a happy time: celebrations, birthdays, whatever. When people walk in and sees cupcakes, it makes them smile. It’s comfort food. My fans are beautiful, happy, smiley, loving people. Even though I might have an occasional sad song, it doesn’t mean I’m a dark or scary person. Everyone is unique, and not all cupcakes are the same. There can be chocolate, peanut
I’m not saying it is a bad thing, but other artists refer to their fans as ‘monsters’ or ‘witches’ or whatever they want to call them. I don’t want to think of my fans like that. butter, vanilla, white chocolate, and they all have different icing on them, but they are all good. They always make you smile and make you happy. David Magazine: What was it like working with Barry Brandon and Stiletto Effect?
Eryn: I love Barry! He’s an amazing artist and person. His work with The Heart Foundation is very inspiring. He helped me a lot, and I owe him. He accepted me in and introduced me to a lot of people here in town, rather than thinking of me as competition. We’ve had so much fun. We were in Pensacola for a week for Gay Days. We put on our own show. They had this whole thing planned, but it didn’t go the right way, so we just talked to the manager of the bar and put on our own show. It was awesome. Barry is such a fun person. He is so non-judgmental and genuine. David Magazine: What else do you want David Magazine readers to know about you?
Eryn: Just that I am so excited about making music, not just for myself but for all different types of people. I’m not just aiming for one type of crowd. I genuinely love my fans. If you come across me on Facebook, I promise you are talking to me. I always want to be very in touch with my fans. I want people to see the real me onstage. What you get from a performance is the real me. I’m not acting. This is me.

You don’t have to be a Renaissance history buff to enjoy the Georgia Renaissance Festival. As cliché as it sounds, there really is “something for everyone,” young and old, gay and straight, male and female. One step into the village and you’ll see hilarious and amazing shows, games, rides, shopping, a play area for kids, minstrels, jugglers, a giant maze for big kids, and even a kissing wench. There are also demonstrations of weaving, coin minting, spinning, sculpting, glass blowing, and leather crafting.
So just how big is the festival? The grounds take up 98 acres, 38 of which are the actual festival site. The rest is for parking, which is FREE to all festival goers. There are 10 performance stages and over 1,000 employees. The festival is only open on weekends, rain or shine, through June 5, and every employee, from ticket sales to the performance stages, is in costume and in character. og One of the most exciting ot h shows is the joust. I had never been to one and didn’t know what to expect. I didn’t really want to make the drive and worried it might be a waste of time and money. Wow, was I wrong!
For the past 25 years, Georgia RenFest goers have consumed over two million pounds of giant turkey legs. Oh, and there are plenty of adult beverages, too, including Renaissance-themed honey mead at the various pubs and taverns in the village, all of which have free live music. One or two of the taverns also serve margaritas. Can you say “made for gays”?
ph
k, I admit it. I wasn’t thrilled about going to The Georgia Renaissance Festival the first time I went, three years ago, but I’ve been back several times since then and will willingly, enthusiastically go again. And again.

can’t rely on all the same old costumes and routines from year-to-year.
“All the shows change it up from year to year,” said Petermann. “That’s a requirement, to add something new.”
The festival regularly brings in new attractions and performers. This year’s new performers include hypnotist Rick Stratton, who is a certified hypnotherapist, stage hypnotist and comedian. There are also belly dancers and a new show called, “Filthy Rotten Scoundrels,” at which the performers execute back flips and belly flops in a giant mud pit as they entertain the crowd.
There really are a lot of unique things to see and do there, most of which is family friendly. The festival also offers opportunities for school field trips and a designated day for guests to bring their pets. They even provide a service by offering pet adoptions with the humane society. The group’s mascot, One-Eyed Jack, who is not available for adoption, has been a crowd favorite for years.
you like to watch men on their steeds impaling each other with their . . . lances, well this is for you. This year the festival offers premium joust seating. You can actually sit in stands on the field and watch the mayhem.
Sarah Petermann, Director of Sales and Marketing, has been employed by Georgia Renaissance Fest for 25 years.
“I got involved initially when I used to work in radio,” said Petermann. “Star 94 used to be called 94Q. Along with an oldies station, they were the top two stations in the city, and I was their marketing director. The festival folks came to me when nothing had even been built, and they said they were looking for media sponsorship. I had moved here from California, where the first ever Renaissance festival was held, so I knew what they were all about. I got involved here and never left, and I love it.” Petermann said the festival has grown tremendously through the years and that people just love the way all the village workers are in character. She said many people who attend RenFest really get into it, which is obvious from the moment you arrive. It’s sometimes difficult to tell who works there and who is attending, seriously!
“People still have to go through the same process onsite to adopt as they would at a shelter,” said Petermann. “The humane society is still required to do a home visit, just like other humane societies. This group is from Georgia Heartland and Fayetteville Humane Society. Last year they raised over $8,000 in donations and found homes for 58 pets.”
One of the most popular shows is “The Ded Bob Show.” Ded Bob is an outrageously funny, sarcastic character who happens to be an edgy skeleton puppet. Clark Orwick, a writer/comedian, is the creator and voice behind Bob. You can often find them walking around the festival talking to guests between shows.
“Everyone loves The Ded Bob Show,” said Petermann. “He has these chants that he does and people sing along. You can tell they’ve been there before. He’s just kind of outrageous.” Orwick said he created Ded Bob around 1985 when he saw an ad in Creative Loafing. He has performed as Bob in other festivals for years and was excited when given the opportunity to do his own show, especially now that the festival has grown so much. “I’ve been here doing my own show about seven years, and I love it,” said Ded Bob. “It has grown a lot in seven years. It’s seven times bigger. When I got here there were just two sheep and a man with a weird hat. My show is about 45 minutes of phallic bone
One Eyed Jack
“A lot of visitors wear costumes,” said Petermann. “We don’t encourage or discourage it, but we do have costume rentals available. A lot of folks really get into it, but many just want to come and enjoy the festivities.” Many visitors attend numerous times throughout the seven weekends that it is open, and have been doing so for years. Festival organizers are well-aware that in order to get people to attend more than once, they

references and songs for the kids, haha. The show is not family friendly, but families show up anyway, despite the warnings.”
A few other must-see shows are “Breaking Point” and “Barely Balanced,” both of which are incredibly acrobatic, jaw-dropping funny shows. “Barely Balanced” is comprised of Margret Ebert, Cameron Tomele and James Freer, also known as “Small, Medium and Large.” Part Cirque Du Soleil, part Three Stooges, this show is sexy, dangerous, and hilarious. Not all the shows involve acrobatics.
Here are a few interviews from our last visit . . .
Chastity Puckerwell, the most famous village kissing wench at RenFest, is a fan favorite among LGBT attendees. She has been kissing attendees for 23 years. She is a Georgia resident and only kisses at the Georgia RenFest, unlike many of the actors there, who travel to work at other RenFests around the country.
David Magazine: Chastity, I hear you are very popular with LGBT attendees. What would you like to say to David Magazine readers? Puckerwell: Tell everyone I blow my kisses to them. I do love my friends who come out. We have great sport. As a matter of fact, I have one particular friend who comes about every other year and always says, ‘Show me or tell me something new.’ I try. Information exchange is always a good thing. I learn from them as well. David Magazine: What exactly is your job at RenFest?
Puckerwell: It is my duty to adorn all handsome men’s cheeks because all men’s cheeks need to be not only adorned, but also adored. Those kisses are guaranteed all day. And if their calves are showing out of the bottom of their breeches, I also give Scottish kisses, on their calves. Calves need to be adorned and adored as well. As for kissing the other cheeks, that is a different wench and different time of day. One has to be careful with that. David Magazine: You must love your job. Does anyone ever get embarrassed when you kiss them?
Puckerwell: I do love passing around the kisses to all the men and children and women. I’m an equal opportunitist kisserist. I have much merriment in that. There are some blushers. It’s most handsome when they blush, and they do get quite embarrassed. Then there are some who say, ‘My wife,’ and I say, ‘Well, that’s alright. You are well trained.’ Then we have those who just run and play. They like to have a little sport. David Magazine: Do your lips ever get tired?
Puckerwell: Oh, nay. I do daily exercises to keep the lips moist and firm.
David Magazine: How much lipstick do you use in one day? Puckerwell: Well, on a really good day my record is 2 ½ tubes. That was a really busy day. I couldn’t whistle 36 davidatlanta

for two days.
The Tortuga Twins are another crowd pleaser. Rafael, DeAngelo and Scaramouch are seasoned performers who know how to get the crowd going. These guys perform at five to seven Renaissance festivals throughout the country all year. David Magazine: Are any of you guys from Atlanta? What’s it like traveling all year?
Rafael: No, none of us are from Atlanta. We travel around a lot, and Atlanta is sort of the hub. This is our career. This is our day job.
Scaramouch: Our lifestyle is such that there is no home. We’ve been doing this for 22 years. Rafael has a house in Florida, but he’s only there about two weeks out of the year. My mail goes there, but I haven’t stepped foot in the state in years. People inevitably ask us which is our favorite Renaissance festival, and we can’t answer that. They are all different and great. However, we really love Atlanta. We were recently in Arizona performing, but our minds were already in Atlanta. We were thinking of which restaurants we wanted to go to and places we wanted to visit while we are in Atlanta. It’s a lot more diverse here than other places we go. David Magazine: There is a lot to do in Atlanta. Do you rehearse during the week since the festival is only on the weekends. DeAngelo: We love it here. There’s a great culture.
Rafael: During the week we aren’t really rehearsing much, but we are keeping the machine turning. We all have our own individual projects we’re working on. DeAngelo: We try not to rehearse too much. It’s one of the joys of improv, but it’s not just an adventure. It’s a job.
Scaramouch: There’s also the social media we have to give attention to and all this other stuff we have to do.
fresh new material. We have fun with it.
Scaramouch: Yes, there is one here today. There is a little girl took a picture with us a year and a half ago in South Carolina and made her mom bring her to the Georgia fair to see us. Someone from South Dakota is here to see us.
David Magazine: Why do you call yourself twins if there are three of you?
David Magazine: Do you have any fans who follow you from one fest to the next?
DeAngelo: A lot of people from the Carolinas come to the show because it’s a shorter commute. Someone from Kansas City came up to me recently. David Magazine: What happens at your show?
DeAngelo: It’s an audience participation improv comedy show. We use people out of the audience to tell a story and sometimes make them the stars. Like Robin Hood or Big Bad Wolf. We don’t do acrobatics like many of the other acts. The lifespan of a comedian is much longer than an acrobat, haha. Scaramouch: We’re also sword fighters. This is our 22nd year doing this show and our 12th year at the Georgia Renaissance Fest. We’re treated very well here, and the crowd likes us. David Magazine: How do you keep your shows fresh and new from year to year?
Scaramouch: Well, we have six different shows, five of which we still perform. We have retired one. Each show is updated a little each year, but there is also a lot of improv. If you stick around for the R-Rated show, which I recommend, we throw in references to Lindsay Lohan, Charlie Sheen, Dumbledore and some
DeAngelo: We also do theater tours and write material for that. We’re working on a possible college tour.
Scaramouch: Because our mother could not count.
DeAngelo: We actually started as a two man troupe.
Scaramouch: I kidnapped part of their show as an April Fool’s joke about 20 years ago, and it kind of stuck. Now there are three of us. Rafael: We now have a second team that we are putting out there. They are younger and handsomer, but we have more talent, right? David Magazine: Is there anything else you’d like David readers to know about you or your show? Rafael: We’d love for you to come to our show. It’s a lot of fun. I’m a big fan of The Trevor Foundation and It Gets Better.

Horoscopes Aries You’re feeling a bit out of sorts at the moment, but with a little effort, picking up the pieces will be surprisingly easy — just reach out to someone who needs your help. It won’t take much energy, so jump in.
SAGITTARIUS You and your people need to kick back and enjoy the world. It’s a great time to come up with the next big thing, whether it’s a raging party or a fantastic idea for a new business venture. Go for it!
TAURUS So much is going on socially that you may feel stumped. Go out and whoop it up? Or stay in and watch reruns? Either way, force yourself to make a decision — be sure you’re doing the right thing when the time comes.
CAPRICORN It’s all about you at the moment — you may feel a little weird about sharing your feelings, even with your best friend. Let it all simmer for the time being. You’ll find yourself feeling a lot more open sooner than you realize.
GEMINI Your housemates or coworkers are more important than ever, so try to get on their good sides right now. It won’t be hard, because they’re already predisposed to thinking highly of you.
AQUARIUS You’re more in touch with your people than you have been in quite a while. In fact, you see your social group as if it were a living, breathing thing — and you know just how to feed it and care for it with love.
CANCER You have the need to move, and nothing’s going to stop you. Make sure you’re in constant motion throughout the week. If you get tired, chill — luckily, you won’t need a lot of time to rest.
PISCES Your people have issues — as usual — but you can’t do anything about it. Unfortunately, you’ll have to deal with others first before you can attend to your own needs. You’ll feel a lot better after everyone is finished thanking you.
Leo Your people are running off in a million different directions, and you may want to go do your own thing too. It’s possible to get a few of your friends to stick together if you really want to, though. VIRGO It’s the perfect time to hang out with friends and strangers alike — that’s because your energy is synched up with practically everyone around you. If a party’s raging, run, don’t walk. You won’t want to miss a single minute of the fun. LIBRA It’s a great time to go in with a friend, sweetie or housemate on a purchase of some kind. You’ll get a good deal — and, more importantly — everyone will step up to share the burden. SCORPIO If you have to be at the office over the weekend, lie low and avoid the boss or supervisor if possible. They are most likely in a terrible mood because they have to work the weekend too. Sometimes misery loves company — but not in this case. 52 davidatlanta

They could turn to the Gay Community Yellow be, according to Ryan. Pages, or with a simple touch, they could simply open an app on their iPhones or Droids.
“Gayborhood” is a fairly new app deigned to
help the LGBT community in many areas of
their busy lives. Its motto is, “Your Life, Your Journey, Your Gayborhood,” and it is owned and produced by Carma Productions and co-
partnered by Marci Alt and Thomas Ryan, who
have produced the Gay Community Yellow Pages for the past 21 years.
“When we originally started looking at producing an app, it was meant to be a value added for our current advertisers in the GCYP,”
said Ryan. “We learned that there are other apps out there that serve our community, but
they really only focus on restaurants, bars and shopping. We know that our community does
more than eat, drink and shop. So we decided,
rather than produce an app just for Atlanta and
South Florida, we would make it a nationwide
resource so that people all over would be able to find gay-friendly businesses, whether they need
accountants, attorneys, landscapers, or anything like that.”

“We don’t believe in charging our community for the ability to find gay-friendly businesses,” said Ryan. “Someone out there should not have to pay
a fee to find out what restaurants in Nashville, for
example, they can walk into without worrying about being discriminated against.”
Even though it is such a new app, it is growing
and improving rapidly, according to Ryan. It currently covers 39 markets nationwide.
“We made our projections about how we thought
the app would do, and, surprisingly, we couldn’t
have asked for better results,” said Ryan. “Advertisers are really excited about it because
it is an opportunity they might not easily have to advertise nationwide. If consumers are using
the app anywhere, they don’t have to seek out the
local gay yellow pages. Our goal is to be in 300
markets worldwide in the next five years. It’s an A-Z app designed to help you find what you are looking for in a quick and easy way.”
Ryan said advertisers are also excited about the
app because of the “very affordable pricing they are offering in this unstable economy.” Prices
range from $350 to $850 for the entire year. Getting the app our there in 300 markets may

Ryan hopes the app will be particularly useful to travelers. There are currently a few different
ways to know whether or not the app will work in a specific city. One way is to use the “near me”
feature on the app. It is GPS-enabled and finds businesses within a 20-mile radius of where

Users may wonder how they can trust that the businesses listed in Gayborhood, or in the GCYP for that matter, are truly gay-friendly.
“Any business you contact through the app is
going to treat you with the same respect as if Bill or Suzie called,” said Ryan. “It’s one thing to go into a restaurant and be discriminated against. I can walk out, never go back, and tell
all my friends, but when I need landscapers or contractors or roofers, it’s a completely different
experience to be discriminated against in my
own home. We provide a service so that you
don’t have to worry about that. We have a policy
and more.
The app does not specify lesbian, transgendered
or any other subcategory in the community. It is LGBT-friendly in general at this time. However,
Ryan said there is an “events tab” on the app that lists more specific info for such subcategories. They try to feature events for the entire
community. Any non-profit groups may submit events to be posted at no charge. Advertisers
also have the ability to post their own events and photos, which must be approved by the Gayborhood staff before being made public. For more information about the app, go to

If it’s beyond obvious I’m ignoring you, why keep talking?
What am I? Flypaper for freaks!? Just because we are roommates does not mean I want to always listen to your gross sexual encounters, and no I don’t want to have sex with you. Back Street reunion? Every year when I see the ads I feel like getting seriously radical. The homo who bought a condo steps from the Back Street entrance years ago, then was shocked at the noise and led the fight that closed it down, should be outed and held responsible. What lesson should he be taught about gay urban life?
I like your fuzzy boots. Did someone kill a Fraggle? You will never be happy as long as you treat good people so badly. Go to all the shrinks you want. It ain’t gonna happen. I have let you go. It’s the damage you caused that I am trying to get over now. Your cold-hearted, cheating, manipulative, unappreciative ways have left holes in my soul.
How about never? Is never good for you? These bars have gotten so boring I’ll even talk to ugly people on Grindr. Dear Bartender: The guests are there to see DRAG, not YOU. You are probably making more from THEIR fans than they are making onstage. Be happy and STFU!
Funny how you have so many friends yet the only photos on your Facebook pages are of you or urging support for some DJ. You tool!
It sounds like English, but I can’t understand a damn word you’re saying. Why do people think of bartenders as a lower class? We’re the reason you get drunk and laid! I’m already visualizing duct tape over your mouth. I don’t need to function with the rest of the world. I pay people to do it for me. Hey Grindr whore. You have to got to have, in this order, (1) hot face, (2) decent body, and (3) cock before I’ll get with you. Stop messaging me with your blank profile page.
Why you be hooking up with someone who smells like shit biscuits? That’s nasty, girl. You lost some respect. After a couple of drinks, you turn into a terrible sounding Julie Andrews in “The Sound of Music.” It’s not karaoke night, bitch. Why do you hide your face on Adam 4 Adam? Do you really expect me to hook up with you after seeing your cock pic? I’m really easy to get along with once you people learn to see it my way.
