TUBING THROUGH THE WATERS OF LIFE his past weekend I went tubing in Helen, Georgia. Although it was awkwardly crowded that day, it was so pleasant to get out of the city, away from cell phones and stress, and just relax.
Mario is a lot lighter than me. Ok, I’m a lot fatter than he is. After barely making it through a few shallow spots, I kept getting stuck and, inevitably, holding him back.
It was even more special because I was with someone who means the world to me. No, he isn’t my BF. He is almost family, and I’ll just call him “Mario” . . . for now.
Isn’t that similar to a lot of relationships in life? Whether romantic or not, committed or not, one person holds the other back sometimes. We tie ourselves together and drift through life, sometimes in front, and sometimes being pulled from behind.
While we were floating down the icecold Chattahoochee, watching lost flip-flops drift by, dodging tree branches and avoiding the wild splashes from over-excited kids, I started thinking about how similar the river is to my life. To life in general. For example, the river is constantly moving, and we are all free to get in and out at any point. Whether we choose to get in at all is up to us. The river is always there and always moving. At times the river, like life, is very fast-paced, and at other times it is going so slowly you think you will never move forward from whatever spot you are in. That’s sort of how I have felt lately, but things are changing. Oh there are plenty of bumps. Some are visible and avoidable, but sometimes you don’t see them at all. Those are the bumps that hurt the most, the ones that knock you in the ass from underneath and almost knock you out of your tube. The ones that require a lot of effort to get back up and start moving again. The river was packed the day we were there with tubers of all ages, more than usual because it was a holiday weekend. We couldn’t even see the water in some areas because it was so jammed up with pink and green tubes. Try as we may, people were just not able to keep moving through all the bottlenecks. When we first got into the river, Mario and I decided to connect our tubes so we could stay together. At first we were moving along just fine, just drifting with the flow of the water. Lazy and free, taking in the fresh air. 8 davidatlanta
After a while Mario and I separated our tubes. I moved along at my pace, bumping into more strangers, trying to keep an eye on Mario up ahead and aware that he was watching for me, too. I even passed him a few times. One time he got really far ahead of me and I thought I wouldn’t see him til the end of the ride, but he stopped and waited for me. I am so thankful for the people in my life who are patient enough to wait for me when I am not moving as swiftly as I could be or should be. On July 1 the state of Georgia created a huge bump for Latinos when it passed House Bill 87, inevitably putting a target sign on anyone Hispanic or Hispaniclooking. Even though not all parts of the bill have been passed, the law will basically use racial profiling for the police to arrest and deport Latino immigrants, and that just isn’t fair. Latinos are being made to feel uncomfortable being in the water at a ll. This unfair law strikes fear in the Latino community that parallels the fear felt by the LGBT community. The fear of being different, or being perceived different. Everyone should be allowed in the water. Latino, gay, straight, old, young, black, white. It doesn’t matter. Just grab a tube, tie yourself on to someone you care about and get in.

Lauren LaMasters Legendary Lauren LaMasters and I were in a good mood backstage of our Saturday show (Tijuana Garage in lil 5 pts). Of course, I’m always in good spirits when it’s time for my birthday celebration week that started on the 22nd, then at my Bingo night at Matador in East Atlanta(Thursday 23rd), then Cowtippers 8pm (Friday 24th), then finish at our show Tijuana Garage on Saturday. Lauren was in a good mood simply because she’s learned how important it is to count your blessings. She feels great now that she recovered from months of pain from a small back injury, plus she has a new home, loving friends and well, she’s happy to be Lauren! Everyone loves Ms. LaMasters, not just for her performances, but she’s HILARIOUS backstage. Charlie Brown calls her “The Entertainer’s entertainer”. If you let her, she’ll entertain you for 2 hours while the ‘other’ show is going on. Another nickname for Lauren back in the day was “Video Vixen” because of how she would watch a video then bring to the stage the same exact replica of that particular entertainer’s look and style. Girlfriend can make some costumes let me tell you. “I always felt that if I wanted something bad enough, I’d find a way to make a costume, honey give me some rubber bands and a paper clip, I’ll make it happen”, she says. While we wait for our turn to go on stage, I figured we might as well turn this conversation into a column. Let’s talk. Brent: So let’s go back in time right quick…why did you start doing drag? Lauren: Actually I can remember back when I was between 6 and 8 years old putting on my mom’s clothes and lipstick thinking I was Ginger Grant from Gilligan’s Island. But what made get into drag you ask “Mr. Star”? A long time ago back in 1912…no seriously I went to a drag show for my first time at a bar in North Carolina, in which I hardly ever do. One night I just stood there in awe as this beautiful queen came out, her name was Mellissa Montgomery and she would pretty much just glide across the stage and I thought ‘Wow, that’s cool, I wanna do that”. The very next week, they had a talent show, and just like when I was 8, I’d did my own costume, wig and makeup and went out there and did it.
Laura: Well the gig I got at Lipsticks closed after about a few months after I started working there. Then I started just working for tips, then eventually got on another cast, and later picked up a couple of my own shows. Then I was asked to be apart of the Charlie Brown Cabaret. I was skeptical at first, but after eventually doing it for 8 years, I think I made the right choice. Brent: Back to present day, I hear that every once in awhile you and the other cast members do a “reunion” show at the Jungle. How’s that going for you? Laura: Great. It feels like I’m back home everytime we come together. Just to see everyone is wonderful, it’s like family. We have a good crowd with a lot of regulars from the Backstreet days who also come out and enjoy the nostalgia as well. Brent: Who’s your favorite mainstream entertainer and your favorite drag entertainer that you admire? Laura: Madonna andBrent: Cher! The crowd at Tijuana Love to see you do her! Laua: Yea well her too, and Ashley Kruiz in the drag world. She actually got me doing Cher. . Brent: What advice would you give someone who wants to do drag? Laura: Be yourself and whatever you want, go for it. Put your heart and soul into it and you’ll be rewarded for that.
Brent: You mean you started off already knowing how to apply your own make up. Laura: Oh honey I did it like I did when I was 8, so pretty much I just put on some mascara and lipstick… you couldn’t tell me I wasn’t Lisa LisaBrent: and The Cult Jam! (we cackle) Omg I remember that group. Ok, so how did you go from that night to doing drag in Atlanta? Laura: I came down here with Dj Eric Hayes (R.I.P.) for an audition to be on the cast for a club called Lipsticks, and I got the job. Brent: Work it LaMasters…but how did you go from that to being one of the world famous cast members of Charlie Brown’s show at Backstreets? 14 davidatlanta

hose are just some of the ways to describe multi-talented diva Idina Menzel, who comes to the Delta Chastain Classic Park Amphitheatre for a special concert July 9 with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. Menzel is most famous for her roles on Broadway in “Wicked” and “Rent,” but she has also appeared in numerous films and on television, including her recent recurring role on “Glee.” Menzel, who is married to actor Taye Diggs, is no stranger to the spotlight, but she says being the mother of a twenty-month-old puts it all in perspective. David Magazine: As an entertainer, do you prefer singing, theater, film or television? Idina: I really love having a balance of all that in my life because as much as I love the theater more than anything in the world, it can be grueling. It is great to have a different kind of medium. Being in a recording studio is really nice because that’s more solitary and introspective. Then I get back on the stage in a Broadway show and I’m with a whole cast of people, and I make all these new friends and have a live audience. TV and film are other techniques that I enjoy learning. I’m not as comfortable in those because I haven’t done as much of it. I guess what I’m trying to say is I find with the energy I get from performing I can get through any of those because I put the same kind of pressure on myself to connect with the audience, whether it is through the camera or on the stage or the microphone. I have to be honest an authentic as I can in any of those mediums in order to make a connection, so it sort of all comes from the same place for me. David Magazine: What would you like David Magazine readers to know about your upcoming concert with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra? Idina: I’m really excited to come back to Atlanta. I love playing with all these symphonies all over the country. I feel like it is really helping me grow as an artist and as a singer. Having these incredible musicians behind me really ups the ante as well. I just love the music. I’m doing lots of songs from the shows people would expect, and then I also I’m doing some standards and originals. I will probably do a couple of brand new things that I haven’t done. It’s kind
of eclectic, but it will really be wonderful to get back there. I love Atlanta. It’s a great music town. David Magazine: Have you ever play at the Delta Classic Chastain Amphitheatre? Idina: I performed one time before when I was with my band when my album of original music came out. I went there on tour, and while I was there I took a jog around the whole property. It was amazing! We had such a good time there, but I remember it was so hot. I had fans blowing air on the stage. I had spent all this time doing my hair and ended up asking someone in the audience for a little rubber band to put my hair back. The vanity went out the window, and I just decided to feel the cool breeze, drink some juice up there and have a great time. If it’s hot or if it rains at this upcoming concert, either way, I know what to do. I will always remember when I was a kid watching on television that famous Diana Ross concert in Central Park. I was thinking if Diana Ross can do it, I can do it. David Magazine: Will there ever be a film version of ‘Wicked,’ and if so will you be in it? Idina: Oh my god, your guess is as good as mine. I’m sure there will be a ‘Wicked’ movie one day, but they have been so successful with the theatrical version that I think that they don’t want to mess with that. By the time they actually decide to make the movie they might think we are too old to play those roles. I’ve been lobbying for them to do the avatar version so it can still be me with stickers on my body and the essence of my green face and my voice. I would just look 20 years younger. David Magazine: You are best known for your roles as Maureen in ‘Rent’ and Elphaba in ‘Wicked.’ Do you think you are anything like either character? Idina: Yeah. I’m like both of them. They are both very different, which is like life. I’m sure most people feel the same way. The person that your friends would describe you as is different than you actually feel inside. I think that I have a side of me that is very confident and fearless, the performer side, which is Maureen. Then there is the side of me that can be pretty destructive to myself and with my insecurity and self-esteem. I have to combat a lot of those fears that I have, so Elphaba is deeply in there as well. David Magazine: Why do you think gay fans love “Wicked” so much? Idina: You know, it is funny that you ask that. I find it very intriguing.

Cover Story con’t Whenever I get asked this question I stumble. I always ask my best friend, who is gay, what I should say when I’m asked because I’m not quite sure of the answer. I think it is because of the stories and the characters that I play. I think those definitely resonate with gay audiences. I think characters that overcome big obstacles, obviously, are characters that I identify with, but I also think it’s something about being a woman, being really strong and confident and having a big voice. I’ve thought about it before. What is it about Madonna, Cher, and Lady Gaga, and Bette Midler? Is it the big costumes, the make-up, and big voices? Is it the combination of it all? Is that just someone that gay audiences gravitate to? What I would like to think is it is my authenticity and constant attempt to be as honest with myself and my audience as possible. David Magazine: Are we going to see more of you on ‘Glee?’ Idina: I hope so. I think they need to sort of let my character and storyline breathe a little bit, but I would love to go back. I had a wonderful time doing it. David Magazine: Have you worked with Leah Michele or anyone else from ‘Glee?’ Idina: Yeah, I have worked with Leah. Before she was on ‘Glee’ we did a couple of readings together for shows that are being developed for Broadway. Also, Matt Morrison and I have a lot of the same friends.
don’t mess an entire day. I get into a city sometimes at 7 a.m., take a nap, and then go to the venue to rehearse. I spend a lot of my time trying to figure out how to navigate that and make myself feel fulfilled and also be with my son and my husband. That’s something I don’t think people realize we as women have to deal with a lot. My son is 21 months old. You have to be yourself and do the things you love because that is what makes you who you are, and you want your children to see their parents happy and fulfilled and content and doing the things they love, yet I don’t want to drag him everywhere. I want him to have some consistency and continuity. I leave him and miss him for a whole day, and that just seems unacceptable sometimes. David Magazine: Do you and your husband, Taye Diggs, plan on your son being in show business? Idina: Our son can do whatever he wants. If he wants to be in show business, I probably wouldn’t encourage it until he went to college. He can do all the school plays he wants, but I want him to have a normal life.
David Magazine: I hear you are working on a new TV pilot. A musical? What can you tell me about it? Idina: It’s Hollywood, so it’s hard to say. I don’t want to say until it really comes to fruition. It’s a piece that I been developing that is loosely based on my life when I was a wedding singer back in Long Island, so it would incorporate music. It has been changing hands network-wise. We are going to see where we end up in the next couple of months.
David Magazine: What made you decide to be become an actress and singer? Did you ever consider a totally different career path? Idina: I have been singing and performing since I was a little girl. I have always had the support of my family and the recognition from teachers and encouragement to keep going. As I look back, I think I would have liked to try other things to be more well-rounded. Maybe I would have majored in English instead of acting or traveled more. I wanted to be a tennis player at one point, but for the most part I have been on this trajectory that I wanted to be just onstage, and now I just spend a lot of my adult life trying to fill in the blanks with great books and friends and new experiences.
David Magazine: Are you working on anything else new?
David Magazine: Is there anything else you’d like our readers to know about you or your show?
Idina: No I’m focused on the tour right now. It has been really life-changing for me. It is really spectacular and very magical for me. I have really been just trying to learn how to balance being a mother and a performer who tours a lot. I would be remiss if I didn’t say that my biggest role is really being a mommy. I take ridiculous flights, red eyes, before concerts so that I can put my son to sleep at night and then go to the airport so I 22 davidatlanta
Idina: I really appreciate the support of my gay friends. I can really feel the support that they have given me throughout the years. That is something I don’t take lightly, and I hope I can continue to connect with them and make them proud.

A
ustralian rock star Anne McCue is a making a name for herself in the rock and roll world. Currently opening for artists such as Pat Benetar, McCue is also headlining shows of her own.
She is a not only a singer, but also a songwriter, guitarist, producer, engineer and video director. McCrue grew up in Campbelltown, an area southwest of Sydney, Australia and graduated from the University of Technology, Sydney with a degree in film production and film studies. She will be performing at Smith’s Olde Bar on Friday July 8. For more details, go to www. smithsoldebar.com. David Magazine: How do you describe your style? Anne: I tend to roam quite a bit stylistically anything from rock to folk, blues, pop and even bordering on jazz sometimes. David Magazine: Who are some of your alltime favorite singers? Anne: I like singers who can’t really sing like Neil Young and Leonard Cohen. I love Billy Holiday and the great rock singers like Ann Wilson and Robert Plant, singers who belt it out like Adele, and singers who are soft like Nick Drake. Jill King is also one of my favorites. David Magazine: What is an Anne McCue concert like? Anne: Well, I like to jam a bit and get a good groove going. The show will move from grooves to pretty songs, rock and back again. David Magazine: Tell me about your process in making ‘Broken Promise Land.’ How long did it take, and how satisfied are you with the end result? Anne: It really didn’t take long to record, about four days total. I wanted to keep the live edge to it and not overproduce it. I succeeded in getting it to where I wanted it to be. David Magazine: How does it compare to you other albums? Anne: All my albums are a bit different from each other. This is my first that is pure electric. There are no acoustic guitars on this record. I wanted to keep it rockin,’ swampy and a bit bluesy. It still covers a gamut of styles though from 60’s garage rock to spooky, psychedelic vibes. David Magazine: Congratulations on your top 10 video on Logo TV. What does having gay fans mean to you? Anne: To me the gay movement is the ‘Peace & Love ‘ movement of our times, so it’s very crucial to me to be a part of that. The agenda is pure, kind of like the peace protesters in the 1960s. It is not a politically-driven movement; rather, it is just about peace, love, equality
and understanding. Empathy plays a big part, and empathy is missing from large sections of society, unfortunately. David Magazine: How concerned are you about music pirating? Anne: Frankly, it’s very annoying when you are trying to make your living from playing music. Songs are so undervalued these days. I know myself that when I get something for free I don’t value it as much as when I pay for something. The same is true of music. David Magazine: How do you like touring in the U.S.? Anne: I love touring in the U.S. and have done so extensively. I’ve played in about 45 states so far. I’m still waiting for that invitation to play Hawaii, but I have played Alaska a few times. David Magazine: What is your music background? Did you study music in school? Anne: I studied classical piano when I was a kid. Liberace was my big hero, but then as a teenager I realized bands like The Doors and The Police were cooler, so I switched to guitar. David Magazine: How important is arts education in schools? Anne: It is crucial for the future. I can’t believe so many music and art programs are being cut! People need to become more proactive in making sure these programs don’t disappear. Art is the expression of the soul of humanity. Without it the human world will just focus on money and greed, and all could be lost. David Magazine: Do you have a musical family? Anne: Yes, pretty much, it’s a big musical family. Music was what tied us all together as we grew up. It was our main focus as a family. David Magazine: Do you play instruments other than guitar? Anne: Yes, I dabble with piano, ukulele, mandolin, lap steel and a few others. David Magazine: Are you working on your next CD? If so, when will it be out? Anne: I’m working on several new projects with other artists. The first is a band called Yeah No Yeah. Our first single is out now on iTunes. It’s called ‘Happy Alone,’ and the video is on YouTube. I’ve started directing other videos for other artists, and I am producing some other artists as well. My new company is called Flying Machine Recordings, and we produce music and make videos for new artists. I’m very excited about this. Greener We’ve all heard the old saying: The grass is greener on the other side. You ask yourself, at this moment, what in your life symbolizes the “grass” that’s supposed to be important to you. Then you find things that are supposed to be “greener” than your grass. Voila! To your surprise, the list can be astoundingly long. Then you ask, “Doggone it, why don’t I have all this stuff in the first place?” The answer is simple: Because you just don’t have them. We are prone to see past things that we already have and ironically focus on the things that we don’t possess. Canadian social specialist Marcy stated that this idea is imbedded in our psychology. People think that “what they want is better than what they have.” This idea runs especially true when applied to our romantic relationships. You’ve seen it. I’ve seen it. We’ve all been there. How many times have we heard our friends console each other about being dumped by their boyfriends, cheated on, or simply wondered about the existence and meaning of love altogether? The grass in this instance indeed means the “men” who are always better looking, smarter, and do better than what you can ever do for your boyfriend. Your boyfriend is the type that has
“mastered the techniques and absorbed the subtleties,” as Blanche put it to Rose because he wants what he does not have. So he runs off and fetches his greedy sexual excesses. But the reality of the situation is that the grass is not always greener on the other side, and more often than not, the result usually ends in tremendous romantic devastation, hurt feelings, lost friends, and broken relationships, usually the aftermaths of stepping over to the dark side (well, green side in this case). But as intelligent human beings, we come up with ways to make circumstances work. Although not entirely far off the ethical way of things, we make our relationships work through compromising. Enter open relationships. An idea of such an alien concept dating back to the early 1980s is now a rampant, normal, sort of the cool thing to do in our gay society. The thought process is broken down as such, using the grass is greener rule: Why can’t I have both the grass I have and the greener grass on the other side? Only in this case the grass is infinite, allowing the pursuer to feed his hunger of lust, and there is one gay commandment that everyone must abide to: NSA, or DL depending on your upbringing. This arrangement has worked out extremely well for many relationships and in some cases, built a

stronger bond between two lovers. So at the end of the day, what gives with all the negativities and controversies that this concept has generated? First, our happiness factor is greatly reduced. This stems from the fact that in a couple one out of the two is unhappy because the open relationship is generally compromised. Research scientist Patil concluded that being in an open relationship is “uniformly bad, decreasing positive feeling by 15 percent compared with single people.” Second, the “fear response,” as columnist Kathleen Doheny found out, can destroy a relationship. The fear is when your lover is focusing more energy and spending more time with the “second” lover. Jealous breeds and envy arises, stuff that can cripple any relationship. And third, the most obvious concern, looks at the health aspect of the relationship. It might be too late to treat that sore after finding out your boyfriend transmitted a certain disease from his other lovers. But don’t you worry, it could get worse. While there are preventive measures to combat the shortcomings that an open relationship creates, such as practicing safe sex, have a bigger net of open communication, or simply
undo the relationship, the inevitable emotional scar carved on one’s heart can take some time to heal and recuperate. As homosexuals, we are hardwired to think and react in a certain way after all, even though not everything we do is generally accepted. We learn and conquer our obstacles, which the generation before us has done to make way for our modern lifestyles. With the concept of open relationship, it will obviously fail for some but work for others. And when it works, it works splendidly. At the end of the day, it is the bed you choose and pick to sleep on those matters the most. The person that lies next to you is the one who you will openly call your true one and only love. Nothing NSA or DL about that.

Y ese ser de las sombras, ese ser hermoso y tenebroso que llamamos demonio, le ofreció estar bajo su mandato hasta que esa alma inocente termine lo único que quería antes de ser consumida por ese fuego tan rojo como el fuego divino… el fuego azul es solo un mito, el fuego de los demonios quema desde dentro. Venganza Pero el demonio hizo mucho más. Él tenía todo el tiempo del mundo y había tenido tantos amos como segundos de existencia. No a todos ellos les sirvió de la misma manera. Debe ser verdad lo que dicen… lo ángeles envidian la hermosura de estos seres y por eso los desterraron y no se conformaron porque ahora quieren más. El cielo, la tierra y hasta el mismo infierno. Y este ser se enamoró del chiquillo y este ser cumplió su promesa… porque sabía que era la única manera de estar junto a el para toda la eternidad. Y es ahí donde quedo una marca. La pluma negra le dicen al que pase por ese sendero que una vez hubo un alma que solo quería una cosa y que a su lado, a su frente (como escudo) y su espalda como sombra siempre hubo alguien o algo que solo lo quería a él, su alma. Podía morir de hambre décadas solo teniendo la satisfacción de que al final el será suyo.
