culture ART LESSONS Olan Montgomery Brushes Up on Gay Hate

By Jason Lumiere Artist Olan Montgomery paints societal conditions and their affect on the individual. His past collections have shined the light on topics like New York’s hidden gay underground, summer resort enclaves like Provincetown and Rehobeth Beach; and Chase Manhattan bank tellers. In his latest collection, “Atrocities”, Montgomery presents his most heart wrenching collection yet, depicting some of our nation’s most horrific gay hate crimes. What message are you conveying through your art? I encourage viewers to see the individual through color and light. By doing so, one’s own humanity can be more fully understood. Your recent work seems to focus on the individual. It always has. Their soul, essence; the wonderful value each person adds for simply being. One person can and has changed the world. Like Harvey Milk? Exactly. I often wonder what Harvey Milk could have accomplished had he had the chance to live. Imagine how much more he would have given to the world. Your new collection, “Atrocities”, focuses on gay hate crimes. I am shining the light on people who were horrifically beaten, tortured, and murdered because they were different. Is there one piece that speaks loudest to you? The piece that most tears at my heart out is inspired by the story of Barry Winchell, a military man who was beaten to death with a Louisville slugger baseball bat in his barracks after it was discovered that he was dating a transsexual. Was he really awake during the attack? He lay sleeping in his bed during the attack but I chose to see Winchell waking up. According to the police report, the blood spatter on the wall around Winchell’s head was like a halo. You take poetic license in several of the pieces, including the painting of Matthew Shepard. I saw Matthew Shepard begging those boys for his life. They had it within their power to stop what they were doing. I would like to think that at some point Matthew’s inner voice and soul took over and gave him a calm. I think there is a calm that comes over us all when we realize that we are not in control of our destiny. You incorporate references to historical works in the collection. The Matthew Shepard piece is inspired by The Shepherdess, a painting by French painter Jean Francois Millet. The tribute of Gwen Arguro is inspired by Rembrandt’s Rape of Ganymede. Gwen was outted as a transsexual at 17, then beaten to death for five hours by three men. They choked her, hit her with a frying pan, tied her up in rope and then beat her with a shovel. The perpetrators used the ‘gay panic’ defense and were able to get a mistrial. Then, in their second trial, the court determined Gwen’s case was not a hate crime because she had sex with several of her assailants. Such injustice. 14 davidatlanta

Who are the people in Shut the Front Door? The people are figurative and not based on any real person. They represent my own feelings about how I have been treated by my own country being gay. Is that why the capital building is in the background? The capitol is in the painting because the legislature of the federal government of the United States does not recognize the marriages of same-sex couples and is prohibited from doing so by the Defense of Marriage Act. Again, someone else saying our gay relationships don’t hold water against straight ones. Have you ever been a victim of a gay hate crime? All gay people are victims of the biggest hate crime in history. When politicians can make speeches about us using blanket derogatory statements, comparing us to pedophiles, calling us all kinds of hateful things and they’re still allowed to hold office, hell, we’re all being victimized. Is the gay community doing enough to combat gay hate crimes? The community cannot combat something we did nothing to incite. What needs to be done is on the backs of every parent. It starts in the home. Do we need a leader like Martin Luther King? How does one find a leader in a world so divided? I would say let’s not follow the leader. Instead, let us as a people protect one another and teach acceptance to our children. Do you plan to exhibit the collection? Right now I am just trying to paint, feel and understand the atrocities going on in the world. Ultimately, you will sell the paintings. Are these paintings appropriate for living rooms? I have to look at Jesus Christ being crucified in every church and overzealous Catholic’s home. I think the world can stand for us honoring our dead. What’s next for Olan Montgomery? I’m painting a series on War along with the Atrocities series. I go between the two to deal with the emotional overflow. I’d say my mind and heart are on fire these days and for all the right reasons. To learn more about Olan Montgomery and his work, visit lipstickchic.com.

QUEEN

MAKER

MIKE RUIZ: IN FRONT OF THE LENS

By Jeremy Landers

Mike Ruiz knows how to transform a lady into a queen. The celebrity photographer turned Kelly Clarkson into a glam queen for her latest album. He made Kathy Griffin a prom queen for the cover of her book and most recently, his lens turned rocker Adam Lambert into a Freddie Mercury inspired goth queen. OK, well, Lambert already was a queen, but Ruiz added that extra glitter to make him shine. All of Mike Ruiz’s work has been behind–thelens, until now. In the past year, he has been tapped to appear as a celebrity judge on several popular competition shows including Tyra Bank’s America’s Next Top Model and Jay Manuel’s Canada’s Next Top Model. But it’s his stint on the surprise hit series, RuPaul’s Drag Race, that has made gay men across the country take notice of the muscle-bound photog. With arms like that, can you blame us? We spoke to Ruiz about stepping out in front of the camera, how he’s handling the adoration of gay fans, and what he is looking for in America’s Next Top Drag Queen. Who is going to win this season’s RuPaul’s Drag Race? We’re looking for the whole package: looks, talent, and presence. They have to be dazzling on every level.

What led to Morgan loosing the race? She didn’t have the fashion capabilities that some of the others did. I still love her, though. If RuPaul was competing in the race today, would RuPaul win? Are you kidding? Rupaul is the standard for which all other queens are measured. Of course RuPaul would win.

Bebe Zahara Benet won season one. What made her stand out? Bebe is articulate, poised, funny, and she performs like Ann Margaret on crack.

Will there ever be another RuPaul? RuPaul was the first queen. She broke so much ground for all others that I’m not sure any queen will ever reach that level of notoriety but you never know. I’d love to see a drag queen win an Oscar!

When you first saw the batch of queens for season 2, was there one who immediately stood out? Morgan McMichaels. It was completely aesthetic. She had the most “realness” going on for me.

Have you ever done drag? Are you kidding, again? My brother does hair and make-up in San Diego. He used to dress me in the full regalia every time I’d visit and then he would take pictures! I have an album full of drag photos of me.

16 davidatlanta

How did you become an expert on drag queens? It’s what I do for a living. I dress people up with outrageous hair, make-up and wardrobe and then I photograph them. Do you purposely surround yourself with glamour? It’s my drug. It is how I make all of my delusional fantasies come to life. The coolest thing is that I get paid to do it. Do you regard your muscles as a form of drag? I never thought of it that way but I guess it is a kind of drag. It’s all part of my self expression, just like my wardrobe. So that would make it drag, wouldn’t it? What lies beneath that body of steel? (Laughs) I’m a little kid having fun while trying to be a decent human being along the way. Are you and RuPaul friends off-camera? Close friends! We hang out whenever our schedules permit. RuPaul is such a beautiful, warm and loving human being. Any fun personal RuPaul stories you wanna share? One of my favorite stories is when RuPaul

brought me to Jumbo’s Clown Room, a female strip club in Los Angeles. We were howling like two giddy school girls at the edge of the stage watching the strippers perform. Your American fans might be surprised to learn you also host the Canadian version of America’s Next Top Model. My good friend, Jay Manuel, is the executive producer of the show. He brought me on board. I love it. We have so much fun judging the girls. Who are the bigger divas? The ladies of RuPaul’s Drag Race or Canada’s Next Top Model? Oh, the queens from RuPaul’s Drag Race are by far the biggest divas around! What’s next for you? I have so much stuff in the works: a TV show in development, a million shoots and music video projects, plus I’m co-writing music. But my biggest project and the one I’m having the most fun with these days is mentoring kids. I’m traveling to high schools and colleges and encouraging kids to follow their dreams. I followed mine and I’m having the time of my life. Visit MikeRuiz.com 17 davidatlanta

la nota rosa Historia completa de un chico by Luis Chiruco

Parte I

Me intrigaba. 20 davidatlanta

Me salió natural pedirle disculpas y abrazarlo.

Shilo

Atlanta’s Boy Toy Originally from Atlanta, Shilo Driver is new to the drag king scene having started performing two years ago. “It all started for me while hanging with my brother at Paris in Decatur.” Shilo admits to watching his drag father, Phillip Driver, and would learn “whether he realized it or not. Phillip is the mark of a true professional. I wanted to be like that. He also taught me about making a dramatic entrance on stage and leaving a lasting impression on the audience.” Shilo also gives kudos to her peers saying that he looks up to and respects Charlie Brown, Christina Diamante, and fellow kings Kevin and Justin. Shilo has really enjoyed everything he was taught these last couple of years, “I love being able to entertain people. It amazes me every time someone says that they came to see me perform. I really appreciate the love.” A lot of love he has received, in addition to appearances at local venues, Shilo has been asked to appear at corporate and social parties as well as bars and clubs out of state, “I am really enjoying the opportunity to travel!” When not performing or in school, Shilo loves to draw, “I am an artist at heart and like to sit with a sketch pad and colored pencils or acrylic paints, but drag is still my number one hobby.” He is also in a wonderful relationship with his partner of 8 months and they have a Cocker Spaniel daughter named Coco Chanel. You can see Shilo Driver on stage at venues around Atlanta such as Jungle, Le Buzz, Paris Decatur, Bellissima, and Cocktail Cove. “Watch out for multiple duets I have in the works with other Atlanta entertainers. I will also be launching my facebook profile this month.” 24 davidatlanta

LATE NIGHTTV BAD GIRL

CHELSEA HANDLER COMES TO ATLANTA

She is raw, she is real, and she has more balls than most men in Midtown—she’s Chelsea Handler! You know her from her late-night talk show on E! Entertainment Television and she is in Atlanta to promote her new hilarious book, ‘Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang’. In her third book, Chelsea holds nothing back as she tells us about her family, her sex life, her career, and her objectionable view on current events. Chelsea, the youngest of six children, was born in Livingston, NJ, to a Jewish father and a Mormon mother. She was born five and a half years after her sister, Shoshanna, and delighted in the fact that she was the youngest of the Handler’s. Shoshanna was quite upset that her parents refused to use birth control and more confused why her mother, Rita, refused the right to choose. In this no-holds barred, ridiculous account of Chelsea’s experiences, she excavates the most intimate issues of her personal and professional life. Whether she is young and discovering ‘the feeling’ at a third grade sleep-over or getting taunted by unaware 30 davidatlanta

parents over Cabbage Patch dolls, Chelsea lets us know what is really important to an eight year old girl—or grown up. As one of the nation’s current, leading female stand-up comics, Chelsea has performed to sold out audiences across the country, including Carnegie Hall, one of the most prestigious venues. Her live shows, like her TV show, mix fearless honesty with downright comedic timing. Her first half hour comedy special, which aired in March 2007 on Comedy Central, was a hit in the ratings and landed her regular gigs on ‘The Tonight Show with Jay Leno’, ‘Late Night with David Letterman’, ‘The View’, and ‘LIVE with Regis and Kelly’. She was also profiled on the much respected news program, Nightline. TV is not the only medium you will find Chelsea, she has been featured in the New York Times, W, People, and is a special guest columnist for Cosmopolitan. Vanity Fair and Entertainment Weekly proclaimed her the ‘Queen of Comedy’ and ‘Breakout Star of 2008’, respectively. In April 2009, Bravo channel acknowledged Chelsea with the

‘A-List Funny Award’. The award was granted in spite of other comics up for it—Tina Fey, Conan O’Brien, Ricky Gervais, and Amy Poehler. With all of that notoriety, it was no wonder that Chelsea was the original star of Oxygen channel’s, ‘Girls Behaving Badly’, which is now syndicated in over 90 markets nationwide. In 2007 and 2008, she starred in ‘In the Motherhood’ with Jenny McCarthy and Leah Remini, which aired online on MSN. However, it was not until her breakthrough show on E! that the world was introduced to Chelsea in The Chelsea Handler Show. What most people might not know is that Chelsea’s first book, ‘My Horizontal Life: A Collection of One Night Stands’ is in its 60th week on the New York Times bestseller list and was also published in 20 other countries. Alternatively, that her second book, ‘Are You There Vodka? It’s Me, Chelsea’, which came out in April 2008, debuted at #1 on the same bestseller list. Her current effort was released this month. Chelsea has also been recognized for efforts that we deem very poignant. In 2009, she was honored with the very distinguished

‘Ally for Equality Award’ by the Human Rights Campaign, which as we all know, recognizes the efforts by those who dedicate time, energy, and love to make to the lives of GLBTQ people that much better. If that were not enough, she was also the celebrity Grand Marshal of the June 2009 Gay Pride Parade in Los Angeles, the 8th largest in the country. So, whether you already know her or want to get to know her, it is no wonder why you would want to come out and see Chelsea Handler at Outwrite Books on March 28 at 1:00 pm. After the book signing, Bill Kaelin brings you The official pre-party, held at The Livingston beginning at 5:00pm. The event is titled “Make Me Laugh”. Princess Charles is hosting and emceeing and will be giving away tickets for the person who can make him laugh hysterically... (and it’s Princess Charles’ birthday party so if you aren’t seeing the show, stick around until 1am and enjoy drinks with him). As if a book signing and a pre party weren’t enough Chelsea Handler for one day, you can see her show, in support of her book, at The Fabulous Fox Theatre. 31 davidatlanta

the Brent Star report

Money, Success, Fame, Glamour!

Money. Success. Fame. Glamour. Just pick one, or better yet, take it all baby (wait, I heard that before). My Sisters’s Room of East Atlanta is offering just that, all of it! Every Friday, they’re GIVING AWAY $300 to the winner of THEIR Drag Races Competition. And child, guess what, I won this past Friday (even though that money was spent before 10am the next day). You have to trust your instincts sometimes, mine was telling me to go do it instead of watching Family Guy reruns all night. The contest is very open minded. I mean, anyone can enter, rather you’re a professional or newcomer! Owner Patryce is very excited about this competition. “Oh yea Mr. Star I sure am and…hello?...Brent? Oh, since I have the mic, our show is hosted by Tiff nay and Jolene Dover (drag King stars) and let me just say it’s instant gratification! All you need is one good performance that’ll blow everyone away and you can win, it’s that simple!”. True, but I didn’t think I was going to win, the drag kings there were getting all of the applause until we, the final 3, had to do a “lyp sync or die” and that’s when I channeled RuPaul saying to me “and don’t fuck it up Brent!”! That put me into survival mode and to my surprise, I won that crowd over and bought a year supply of lube and glitter. “Um sure Brent, and please don’t forget to tell your readers to come support you in four weeks at our finals where you might win $1000”. Praise the Lord! “That’s right get excited, and remember we’re not just giving all that money away, but we believe in promoting and nurturing artistic expressions in our community”. Thank you MSR! Well, on that note, you have 3 weeks left to win and qualify for the finals (and get your car note paid!). Visit www.mysistersroom.com for more info. Speaking of “praising the Lord”, let me tell you the latest thing to SHOUT about. On Tuesdays, there’s a new cabaret show coincidently called “Money, Success, Fame, Glamour!” to be held at SHOUT restaurant at 11pm. Yes ma’am! It’s another Caliber Enterprises product that’s dressed for success. It’s hosted by “brilliant and lovely” Princess Charles (blink), Nicole Paige Brooks of Drag Races fame, the glamorous Phoenix and “Brent ta Star!”. The show just started this past Tuesday and already a certain celebrity was spotted in the crowd and he… oops, sorry, I just ran out of time. Until next week, guess what I heard…. 46 davidatlanta

In other news… I’ve been asked where’s the Gaydar magazine. WELL…remember when Gaydar was the new David? Well now David is the new Gaydar AND now owned by the Gaydar empire. Horny and looking for eye candy? Check out SWINGING RICHARDS for NO COVER Tuesdays (right after new SHOUT show of course), I’d like to give a shout out to new couple Cliff and Nelson (1,2,3, awwwwwww), comedian Chelsea Handler will be at Outwrite Sunday March 28th and also on that Sunday will be the memorial for former Armorette Dixie D. Cupp. It’s being held 2-4pm at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church. 781 Peachtree.

Tip of the Week: “Follow your own instincts”. Child, stop trying to get advice from 10 different people when you already know the answer!

Quote of the Week: “You must learn to be still in the midst of activity, and be vibrantly alive in response”. Well, atleast that’s what they told me when I first went to Peek a Boo.

Brent Star’s Weekly Schedule: Mondays at Blakes, Thursdays at Café Con Leche (Heretic) with free tequila shots, Saturdays at Tijuana Garage, Sunday brunch at Las Margaritas and everywhere else that pays!

March 21st-April 19th Try to install a second or two of delay between your thoughts and your words this week -- you may need it! Self-editing is especially important when communication is on everyone’s minds, like it is now. April 20th-May 20th Legal agreements are especially murky right now -- so try to stay away from them! You may have to sign one or two papers, but keep it to a minimum unless you have rock-solid advice to do otherwise. May 21st-June 21st You’re happy where you are -- and most likely, you’re meeting lots of new people! Your amazing social energy is a shining beacon to most, and you almost certainly end up with a new friend if you want one. June 22nd-July 22nd You may feel like you’re in over your head lately -- your projects are all just a bit overcomplicated! Call in reinforcements or ask for clarification soon, as you need some additional info. July 23rd-August 22nd You may question your commitment to some big new project or program, but that’s all par for the course. It’s a good time for you to deal with people who can challenge you in all the right ways. August 23rd-September 23rd You need to deal with people who are ignoring the small details in favor of a big picture that can’t come to life without some serious work. You need to inspire them to focus on the small stuff.

48 davidatlanta

September 23rd-October 22nd It’s a great time to take care of stuff around the house. Your self-sufficiency is peaking, so you should be able to tie up loose ends and make sure that everything is ready for spring cleaning! October 23rd-November 21st Your mental powers are still quite potent, and you should have all the info you need to start making big plans. Work, romance, travel -- it all adds up to something that should work out perfectly. November 22nd-December 21st Your position may not be as strong as you think it is, so try not to ask for big favors this week, especially around the workplace. Things should settle down pretty soon, but until then, take care of the basics. December 22nd-January 19th You feel much better about your connections with friends. You may be able to fix a rift that is growing between two or more of them, but you need to make sure that you’re taking care of your own business, too! January 20th-February 18th Something doesn’t feel right to you recently, but it’s only because you’re not seeing everything. Look more deeply and you are sure to pick up at least one major clue. Making sense of it takes inspiration. February 19th-March 20th Try not to worry so much about how much you know -- things are actually going pretty well for you! It’s a good time for you to step out and take bold action without fearing for the consequences.

farewell Paris Decatur

Paris Decatur to close Saturday March 27th after a final show featuring Sukeban with Kaori, The Andrew Sisters, Dax and Natasha Diaz Extravaganza. Paris Decatur owner, Susan Bird wishes to thank everyone for the experience and their support in a press release last week.

It has been a great run, and I have learned a lot. I have had great support from my friends, and I have met so many interesting and wonderful people that I now feel privileged to call my friends,

Susan would like for everyone to come out this weekend for Le Grande Finale of Paris Decatur and to have a last drink with her and the staff. Don’t miss the great show by Sukeban and your last chance to visit with old friends. David will be on hand for a special Seen @ photo session, we hope to see you there. bitch session To the bitch who says gays driving an SUV are projecting worthless insecurity: You will never enjoy the thrill of off-loading in your pathetic Prius like I do in my Land Rover.

I am a realtor, not a hustler. I barely want to sell your house, and I certainly don’t want to hookup with you and that Sasquatch you call a husband.

I’m so over these guys who run around every weekend getting totally trashed and sleep with the nearest victim. Stop reinforcing the stereotypes that most gay men so strongly dislike. Instead of buying a value pack of condoms and lube, why don’t you buy some class? (Hey, at least they are using condoms)

“Why do all of the drag performers in Atlanta always wear the same outfits. One week, 18 songs performed, 4 outfits… really?”

Why do guys online chat me up, then stand me up, then attempt to repeat the process months later? I’m a atop, boys. I never forget an asshole.

“I hate some of the new skyscrapers going up around town. Blocking sunlight on some of our great patios. Ugh!”

You’ve been 27 in your online profile for 15 years. Do the math… then remove the word ‘prep’ from your screen name. Please don’t tell me I smell of smoke when your breath smells like ass. OK! We get it. You’re old, in good shape and happy about it. Yay! Now can you enjoy it and stop explaining it?

OK, the grass is always greener on the other side. But if you have a dude and miss being single, you’re and idiot. Just admit that you are an attention whore and that you have absolutely no intention of changing.
