WELCOME! On behalf of the Career Opportunities in Sports Committee and The City of Oxford we would like to welcome you to the 5th Annual Career Opportunities in Sports in the wonderful city of Oxford, AL. Each year we look for the best and the brightest in there respected field. This years representatives will be from various colleges and universities all over the southeast also including the high school level. This seminar is formatted for coaches and administrators from across the southeast to come together, and learn from some of the best the state of Alabama has to offer. We are delighted to feature, Coach Mark Freeman, Thompson High School; Haven O’quinn, Birmingham Southern College; Clay McCall, Auburn High School Athletic Director; and Joey Jones, University of South Alabama. These coaches will be speaking on various topics from building a program, leadership, development, and having a healthy relationships with your athletes. The list of speakers and a brief biography of each speaker is included in your packets with information on what each coach will be talking on specifically. Why Oxford Civic Center? The Oxford Civic Center is one of the most premiere convention centers in the northeast part of the state. With access to I-20 , Hwy. 21 and U.S.-431 the convention center in nestled conveniently in the heart of Calhoun County. This provides access from Gadsden, Birmingham and Atlanta, Georgia. Those three major markets give the convention center a perfect location for all who are interested in participating in the festivities.

The Oxford area also makes a great location to hold any type of event. With the growing economy that has emerged in Oxford, Alabama, people have many several options of entertainment. Lodging and food options are immense in the area to partake in when the festivities are not being held. From golfing at the beautiful Cider Ridge Golf Course, to the delicious dining options like Classic on Noble, the area has everything you need to make your weekend a memorable one at the Career Opportunity Sports Seminar.


Oxford Civic Center The Oxford Civic Center is one of the most premiere convention Freedom Park. Additionally, they offer a children's playground, 10 centers in the northeast part of the state. The civic center features covered picnic pavilions, fishing pier, batting and pitching cages, and a multipurpose gymnasium and an abundance of meeting space. plenty of parking for everyone. You will also find a public swimming pool, 5 Baseball for Youth fields, a 4-field softball complex, a lighted tennis court complex, and

PRICE Outgoing Location Oxford Civic Center - Rental fee of $1000 per day (includes custodial fee) Guest Speakers Joseph (Joey) Jones – Head Football Coach at the University of South Alabama – Cost $2,500 Clay McCall – Athletic Director at Auburn High School – Cost $500 Mark Freeman – Head Football Coach at Thompson High School – Cost $500 Haven O’Quinn – Head Volleyball Coach at Birmingham Southern College – Cost $500 Ingoing Booth Booth space is 10’ X 10’. Cost is $600 per booth. If purchasing more than four (4) booths in a row, booths must be down side aisles. Booths will be available for sponsors. Booth package includes 8’ high background drapery and 3’ high side divider drapery, 1 company ID sign, 1 6’ topped and skirted table, 2 chairs, and 1 wastebasket. SPEAKERS Joseph (Joey) Jones After graduation from Mobile’s Murphy High School, Jones went on to play wide receiver for Paul Bryant at the University of Alabama. In 1983 he graduated with a degree in business administration. His first head coaching job was at Dora High School where he went 24-11 over three seasons. After this he moved on to become the head coach at Mountain Brook High School where he had much success going 101-27 over ten seasons. The next step in his career took him from the high school level to the college level. He became the head coach of Birmingham Southern College which would have its first team since 1939, when the program had been disbanded. After only one season, University of South Alabama became his new home to build yet another program from scratch. South Alabama has since joined the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (Division I-A) as members of the Sunbelt Conference. Coach Jones will give his three keys to building a program and explain how they can be applied to a new program or a currently running program.

Clay McCall Clay McCall is a second generation athletic director at Auburn High School. Clay began his career as an assistant football coach at Auburn High School. He went on to work his way into the role of athletic director. He made his first major impact with the hiring of Matt Cimo as the head baseball coach. Since this hire in 2002, AHS baseball has won three state championships and is considered one of the top programs in the state. The golf programs, soccer programs, basketball programs, and track programs have also won state championships. Football has also thrived at Auburn since McCall has been there. Due to the schools achievements in athletics, Coach McCall was named the 2014 Athletic Director of the Year by the Alabama High School Athletic Directors and Coaches Association. Coach McCall will provide his five keys to effectively managing all athletics at a larger school. He will speak on organization, delegation, standardization, adaptation, and appreciation.


SPEAKERS Mark Freeman After graduating from the University of Alabama, Freeman returned to his alma mater to serve as the head football coach. He coached for 10 seasons at Bessemer Academy, winning AISA titles in 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2007. His Rebels were also runner-up in 2001 and 2005. Freeman then moved along to the Spanish Fort Toros and posted a 50-7 record over four years while winning two state championships. Freeman has now moved to Thompson High School where he hopes to build yet another dynasty in Alabama High School Athletics. Freeman will lay out his plan for goal setting, plan making, result evaluating.

Haven O’Quinn O’Quinn is originally from Daphne, Alabama. She graduate from Troy University, where she played for four years and currently is top five in several individual and career record categories. O’Quinn is one of three players in Troy’s NCAA Division I history to have over 1,000 career kills and 1,000 career digs. Her coaching experience extends over 10 years with stints at Pelham High School and several club volleyball teams. For the last five years, O’Quinn has been the head volleyball coach at Mountain Brook High School. For the last three of these, she has led the Spartans to win the 7A state championship. Her record in those five years is 223-50. She has recently been named the head volleyball coach at Birmingham Southern College and is excited about the opportunity awaiting her. O’Quinn will discuss creating a healthy relationships with your athletes that will help them grow as individuals in and outside of athletics.
