Paul Horton; the art of the storyteller Paul Horton is one of the UK’s most well known contemporary artists. He has worked with publishers Washington Green Fine Art for ten years now and the piece featured on the front cover, The Three Jesters, was one of his first ever published artworks. “I wanted to be an artist for as long as I can remember, on recalling my childhood it seems I was always drawing and painting - it became the very fabric of my life,” says Paul. Paul’s work has evolved over the years as his inspirations and ideas have changed. His early work very much focused on puppet theatre and developing characters and stories around this. Nowadays, Paul has turned his attention to scenes of everyday life and through his charming portrayal, makes the ordinary, extraordinary, as shown here in his most recently released piece, Here Comes The Summer. Paul’s art work is available at Castle Galleries, located around the UK www.castlegalleries.com

Over the last three years there have been 227 new businesses across the Vale, this is an increase of 1.6%. Faringdon Chamber of Commerce provided breakfast for around thirty business owners who came along to an impromptu networking meeting, many of whom were interviewed by Phil and gave their views on what they wanted for small businesses from the Chancellor in his Budget. Mike O’Keefe, owner of the i-Cafe was later interviewed by the BBC and said he was “disappointed that the Chancellor had not reduced business rates for start-up businesses”.

Faringdon Busines Breakfast Club FBBC is a lively but informal Business Networking Club which has been attended by in excess of 300 members during its 9 year existence. FBBC meets at 7.30 a.m. on the first working Monday of each month at the Sudbury House Hotel. There is no membership fee and no limitations on which businesses can attend. More information can be found on the Club's website: http://www.fbbc-networking.co.uk FBBC's next meeting will be on Tuesday 2nd April and instead of a speaker, once everyone has introduced themselves, there will be an opportunity to have three "one-to-one" meetings with other members present, a sort of "speed networking". This slightly different format always proves popular, so please e-mail paul.brame@morgan-cole.com or call the booking line on 0845 003 1340 if you wish to attend FBBC in April; newcomers are always welcome. Who doesn't love puppies? Those cute, playful, heart-warming creatures, that give us so much joy, happiness and ............ responsibility. Finding puppies desirable as new family members is one thing, looking after the dogs for the rest of their lives, day in and out, is another. Every year thousands of dogs are being dumped after their owner found out that having a pet is not only fun, but involves hard work as well as time and financial commitment. So step one on the list of boxes to tick when thinking of getting a puppy is: do I have enough time for him; am I willing to go out for long walks at least twice a day; can I cope with training the dog, feeding it, bathing it, noise and funny smells; can I change my way of taking holidays; am I committed to pay for food, toys, insurance and vet bills? If the answer is yes to all of that: welcome to the wonderful and crazy world of yelping, pooing, weeing, playing, talking with funny voices and stumbling over toys in every single room of your house. After establishing that you do want a puppy you need to make a decision which breed to get and where to get your puppy from. Think how much space you have in the house, how much exercise different breeds of dogs need (and if you can keep up with it!), how much food will cost (imagine the different meal sizes of a Yorkie and a Newfoundland!) and how much grooming your favourite breed requires. Of course there are always cross breed dogs, often less prone to certain illnesses. Make sure you get your dog from a reputable breeder who will always give you certified papers with the dog. Or maybe make an unwanted dog happy and get him from a rescue centre. In order to keep dogs happy and healthy there are certain things we do on a regular basis. Here is a list of some of them: Ÿ Vaccinations - starts at 8 weeks, then 12wks, then 16 wks with annual booster vaccinations. Ÿ Pet Health Insurance can be vital for covering unexpected and sometimes significant costs. Ÿ Flea control and Worm treatment – Monthly flea treatment and regular worming is essential. Ÿ Microchipping – Ensure your dog can be re-homed safely and quickly Ÿ Feeding – You are what you eat! This also applies to your puppy. Feed good quality feed at all times. Ÿ Toilet Training – the earlier you start training the better. Ÿ Socialisation – the earlier you start socializing your puppy the better. Ÿ Training – Keep training sessions short and sweet to a maximum of 15 minutes and make sure it is fun! If you want any further advice on the above my staff would be happy to discuss this with you further. Now enjoy your new family member, treat him or her well and they will become your best friend. Rubies Dog Grooming Spa is a hit in Oxfordshire for Pet Lovers Young entrepreneur, Suzanna Carter, has found success with her new business of pooch pampering and doggy day care, offering a unique, tailor made service to all her clients. Suzanna, 23, set up Rubies Dog Grooming Spa in January 2011 and has been successfully running the thriving business ever since. Formerly an Executive PA, Suzanna wanted out of the rat race and to run her own business and decided to pursue a lifelong ambition of working with dogs. Following a visit to a dog grooming salon with her own dog, a Norfolk Terrier named Ruby, Suzanna fell instantly in love with the idea of opening up her own grooming empire. Rubies has made a flying start with clients coming from all over Oxfordshire to have their dogs looked after. Suzanna offers a friendly and personal service with flexible hours and accommodating all of her clients’ requirements. The health, safety and well-being of the dogs Suzanna cares for is her main priority. All dogs have a full consultation and medical check free of charge before any initial treatment. Each dog receives one to one service ensuring they all get the attention they deserve. Grooming prices vary between breeds (see website for details) and all sessions include: consultation and health check, clipping or hand stripping, brushing, ear cleaning & plucking, massage bath and shampoo, blow drying and styling, nail clipping and a coat fragrance finishing spray. Suzanna’s interaction with her clients enables her to provide a bespoke service catering to all of their needs. “I am always asking clients what services could make their lives easier. Rubies is not just a grooming spa but has blossomed in to a doggy day care centre and a place where dogs can come and have fun and socialise with other dogs when their owners are away or too busy to look after them,” Suzanna said. Rubies now offers a range of additional services including Home from Home Overnight Stay at £25.00 per night, Walking Service £10.00 and an emergency Pregnancy Service for when your dog needs looking after when the family goes to hospital at short notice. Suzanna also hopes to add new services towards the end of this year including Rubies Puppy School and an online shop selling exclusive countrywear and dog products. Suzanna has created a home from home experience for the dogs that she looks after with the fully equipped Salon just outside her house and two enclosed gardens to play in. There are also sleeping areas available for any tired puppies who need a nap. The dogs that visit Suzanna have the added benefit of being able to exercise on nearby private farmland with fabulous views and vast open spaces for the animals to run around in. Doggy Day Care visitors receive at least 60 minutes of off lead private field walking.

Suzanna with several happy customers

Suzanna is eager to make her clients and their dogs feel relaxed and comfortable when they come to Rubies. She said, “I try to make Rubies Grooming Spa fun for all owners to be part of and lots of clients have now become my friends. My clients and I have one thing in common which is the happiness and well-being of dogs. Last year I organised two events; a charity dog walk in aid of Dogs Trust and Cancer Research which was such fun. I also held a best behaved dog competition at Christmas where the winner won a luxury hamper from Millets Farm Centre.” Suzanna is thrilled with her new business venture, saying, “It is so rewarding that you can achieve your dreams if you work hard and I am proud to have set up my own business at such a young age. It is so satisfying to have the luxury of being able to wake up in the morning wanting to go to work.”

Birdie Tales Blue Tit

(Cyanistes caeruleus) Never mind the Olympics this summer, if you want to witness speed, agility and acrobatics at its absolute best, just take a look out the window at the humble blue tit performing in your gardens. These blue and yellow live-wires can hang upside down from almost anything, whilst going about their daily feeding routine. Any garden with a bird table or peanut feeder is an attraction too good for them to resist. The pinnacle of their aerial display is during the late spring, early summer months, when the feeding frenzy of nurturing their young begins. Both male and female blue tits can leave the nest, source food and return in under ninety seconds flat! (Eat your heart out Usain Bolt) Blue Tit clutches can be up to seven or eight eggs at a time, two or more hens can lay eggs in the same nest creating lightening speed food gathering displays. Successful breeding of chicks is dependent on a sufficient supply of caterpillars between May - July. Caterpillars are a large part of their diet, if you look closely, the brightness of yellow on each birds chest varies considerably. The yellowness of a male blue tits breast is an indication of the number of yellowy green caterpillars he has eaten, the brighter his breast the more attractive he is to females. When it comes to the pursuit of food, there are few cleverer than the blue tit. Before double glazing in our homes was the norm, these little opportunists would tap at the putty around windows to get at the linseed oil and insects, but they are most famed for pecking through milk bottle tops to get to the milk. There intelligence is not restricted to food collection, blue tit nests are made from mostly moss, wool and hair; the parents regularly gather lavender and mint to disinfect the nest from parasites. Blue tits use attack calls to warn other birds and other species of the presence of predators, not bad for a bird so common that most of us rarely give it a thought! C.Row

The 4th hole, now a challenging par 3 with a water hazard guarding the front of the green and the new par 4 16th hole, a slight dog leg to the right from a new tee position, with the Carswell Tree still a feature as the hole follows the first half of the old 17th fairway before turning to the right to a newly constructed undulating green. Whether you are a seasoned player who enjoys competitive sport or a complete novice who wants to start from the beginning, Carswell has the facilities for you. Wine Review Celebrating International Malbec Day

Tuesday 17th April 2012 What exactly is malbec and why should it be REVIEWS celebrated? Malbec is a black grape variety, originating in Bordeaux and native to south-west France. However, it is Argentina that has claimed it as its own ‘national variety’, arriving there in the 1850s. Malbec is a thin-skinned, juicy grape that provides rich dark, damson-driven aromatic purple wines when produced in a dry, warm climate (such as Argentina). It is very susceptible to disease and following the severe frost of 1956 in Bordeaux, 75% was lost and it was replaced with merlot. International Malbec Day is an initiative organised by Wines of Argentina – raising the profile of their nation’s most famous grape variety. So make yours a malbec on 17th April! Malbec to try locally: Mendoza Heights Malbec 2011 Mendoza, Argentina Dark purple in colour with inviting aromas of plum jam, dark berry fruits with a hint of violet. This wine is well structured on the palate, with rich fruit intensity, finishing with moderate length and slight smokiness and vanilla spice. Available from the Radnor Arms, Coleshill. 175ml glass £3.60 250ml glass £4.60 750ml bottle £13.50

Restaurant Review The Crown, Shrivenham

Delicious home cooked food, an individual warm welcome, lovely surroundings and value for money. All of the above are on offer at The Crown in Shrivenham. This delightful quirky restaurant is the pride and joy of Wendy, Brian and son Phil. Wendy runs front of house service, her enthusiasm and personality being totally infectious. Husband Brian is bar manager, keeping the real ale, draught lager and extensive range of wines in excellent order. Head chef Phil has created a superb menu catering for a wide range of tastes, complemented by a regularly changing specials board. Our choice of starters – Thai fishcakes with sweet chilli dip and potted brown shrimps with granary toast- Followed by pan fried salmon fillet served on a nicoise salad of olives, new potatoes and French beans - Market fresh fish and chips, served with mushy peas and homemade tartar sauce. The presentation and taste was excellent, not much room left for dessert, but the chocolate torte with strawberries and crème fresh proved too hard to resist! The main restaurant has seating for up to 34 people; also available is a free function room for up to 20. Or you can chose to dine outside in the lovely terraced garden area. Outside catering is available for weddings and parties, with individual menus as per your requirement. The restaurant became extremely busy as the evening moved on; it is obvious to see that good quality food, great service and attention to detail pays dividends. If you haven’t visited The Crown yet, you are missing out! www.thecrownshrivenham.co.uk 01793 784584

We place a substantial amount of home insurance, therefore using our expertise and select panel of Insurers we can find you the High Net Worth Home Insurance to suit.

Ÿ Do you pay £600 or more each year for home insurance? Ÿ Is the rebuild cost of your home over £200,000? Ÿ Are your contents worth over £50,000?

High/Mid Net Worth Home Insurance Ÿ New research shows that 60% of High Net Worth homeowners may be underestimating the true value of their possessions, leaving them at risk of being underinsured. Ÿ High Net Worth policies often do not need costly individual valuations for personal possessions under £15,000 and £25,000 for household items. Ÿ Policies are usually written on a “Worldwide All Risks” basis. This means that personal possessions are covered wherever you go, the cover doesn’t stop at the front door. Ÿ Our policies take fluctuations in the market into account so that you find it simpler if you need to make a claim. Don’t be caught out! Over the last decade we have seen the value of gold rise by 500%.
