WHO’S NEXT?
Business Update Cllr. Matthew Barber, leader of the Vale of White Horse District Council, was the guest at the June meeting of Faringdon Chamber of Commerce. Matthew told members that the District Council are keen to promote local businesses. He confirmed that the District Council will be providing two hours free parking in Faringdon and he hopes that this will be available by Christmas. Faringdon Chamber of Commerce is supporting the 2011 Faringdon Festival and will be providing a Treasure Hunt around town. The Tesco appeal took place at Sudbury House Hotel at the beginning of June. The appeal took place over five days and the inspector visited the proposed sites for both Tesco and Waitrose. We understand that there will be a decision made within the next four weeks. For information regarding the appeal you can visit http://tinyurl.com/5reo4g4 and search for Tesco Appeal reference APP/V3120/A/10/2143419

Waitrose have submitted amended plans and these can be found at http://tinyurl.com/6d9w92n Faringdon Business Breakfast Club (FBBC) had yet another storming morning on Monday 6th June when almost 40 local businesses met at the Sudbury House Hotel, Faringdon for its monthly networking event. Guest speaker was Merrill Jacobs of Genero Web Design who gave a leading edge presentation on the rise of smartphones and the need for websites to be optimised for this next phase of the technology rollercoaster. For those of us still struggling to get to grips with the web at any level, Merrill's presentation was a much needed wake up call.
Deadline for August Issue Thursday 21st July
FBBC is an informal Business Networking Club which has in excess of 300 members. It meets at 7.30am on the first working Monday of each month at Sudbury House Hotel. There is no membership fee: just ÂŁ10.00 for breakfast is required and no limitations on which businesses can attend. More information can be found on www.fbbcnetworking.co.uk

(Sturnus vulgaris) Many garden bird watchers loathe starlings, mainly because of the way they descend on food in large numbers and eat everything within a few minutes. It is easy to see this behaviour as greed and a concerned bird feeder on a limited budget can be driven to despair. (I have toyed with the idea of a flame thrower!) However, starlings are in decline; surveys suggest that the survival rate of young birds is responsible. (Cancel that flame thrower!) The large volume of starlings we see during the winter months are not local birds; their numbers are supplemented by millions from Eastern Europe, where winters get too hard for them to remain. They arrive here during late September, returning late March, early April.

Over the last few weeks our garden has become a playground for starling chicks - they drop in from the sky like harrier jets. Watching their parents feed them is a sight to see. They are like miniature penguins, following their mums and dads around with open beaks. Has anyone else noticed that starlings, when feeding, are always followed around by sparrows? I’m not sure if they consider starlings as body guards or food testers? Despite the bad reputation, starlings are great entertainment. On closer viewing they are extremely colourful birds and full of character. Best of all is the daily communal bath time. How can 26 young starlings dunk and dive at the same time into something the size of teapot? Most of you will still consider starlings as a gluttonous garden pest. I am reminded of this most mornings when my neighbour can be heard shouting “Bleedin’ Starlings!”

Restaurant Review The Eagle Tavern at Little Coxwell www.eagletavern.co.uk Tel: 01367 241879 Every once in a while you discover something pleasing, something special that you want to keep to yourself. We recently found such a place: The Eagle Tavern in Little Coxwell. We’d booked our evening meal in advance, but we arrived with no real expectations. On entering, we immediately noticed the relaxed ambience of the place, despite it being fairly busy, with people having dinner or just popping in for a drink. We were really impressed by the Bar Menu, which had a wide choice of grills, cold boards, nibbles, specials and mouthwatering desserts, as well as a good kids’ menu. The restaurant is tucked away at the rear of the pub and it’s very intimate. Again, the atmosphere and décor was totally relaxing. You can see that the new management have put in a lot of hard work to achieve this. We chose a bottle of Australian Shiraz from the extensive wine list while we perused the Á La Carte menu. I went for grilled mackerel for starters, followed by spring lamb three ways. My good lady opted for parfait, followed by poached salmon. The presentation was excellent and the taste was fantastic - why have we not been here before? Honestly, we have visited most of the local eating establishments in Oxfordshire and this is right up there with the best. I couldn’t manage a dessert after totally gorging myself, but dipped in to the good lady’s banana flambé and wished I had! The Eagle Tavern source both free range meat and fresh vegetables locally, and their fish arrives direct from Brixham Fish Market. The Á La Carte menu is a set price for one, two or three courses from £12.95 - £22.50. If you fancy a daytime treat, lunches are served daily (except Mondays), including Sundays. When looking for superb food in great surroundings this is it - quite simply, modern “European cuisine” at an affordable price.

Frizzante is an Italian term for ‘semi’ or ‘lightly’ sparkling wines, where true sparkling wines are referred to as spumante. They can be produced via a couple of methods: one being by direct carbonation; another through partial secondary fermentation in a tank, then bottled under pressure in order to preserve the bubble. (The ‘bubbles’ being the carbon dioxide by-product from the fermentation process). Here are a couple that will add a bit of sparkle for festival goers and the relatively lower alcohol levels see them conducive to the daytime hours….

Il Casone Glera Frizzante IGT NV Veneto, Italy Produced from the white Italian grape variety ‘glera’, which until 2009 was referred to as Prosecco. It is from the same area of prosecco production, which may have had a hand in this confusion. (Prosecco is produced from the grapes of the same name.) Lightly sparkling with youthful aromas of white blossom alongside peaches and melon. The palate is refreshing, with flavours of crisp green apples with subtle melon and peach. Sacchetto Pinot Rosa Frizzante IGT NV Veneto, Italy This fizz is produced from the grape varieties pinot nero (pinot noir) and pinot bianco. Coloured light salmon pink, it has very subtle aromas of strawberries and redcurrants on the nose.
