Business Update Iain Nicholson of the Oxford Town Chambers Network (OTCN) was guest speaker at the latest meeting of Faringdon Chamber of Commerce. OTCN was started seven years ago to help give a voice to smaller town Chambers of Commerce across the county. Since then it has grown into a dynamic business network with 31 members from towns and villages across Oxfordshire and also 18 networking groups (including Faringdon’s very own Business Breakfast Club). It provides support for all businesses who are members of the various local Chambers of Commerce in Oxfordshire through the member groups including networking opportunities, events and publications. Chamber President, Paul Brame, is eager to help deliver some of the projects from the Shaping Faringdon event. As part of this initiative, one of the first things he and the Chamber will be looking into is the signage around the town, including the roundabouts on the A420 and at Great Coxwell. It may be possible for the planting and signage at these points and on the approaches to Faringdon to be designed to be more welcoming, to encourage more visitors travelling along the A420 into the town, as well as helping to publicise local events.

Cover artist - Shelagh Baxter Shelagh Baxter is largely self taught, having taken up drawing and painting as a hobby in recent years. Having originally trained as a biologist she has a lifelong interest in the structure of plants and the beauty of the natural world. She likes to capture the effect of light as it reflects off water and brings a richness of colour to the things we see. Her preferred medium is soft pastel. Shelagh lives in Faringdon and exhibits locally. She is a member of the Faringdon Art Society committee and organises their coach trips to major art exhibitions in London and elsewhere. More of her work can be seen at faringdonartsociety.org.uk and she may also be contacted at shelagh.baxter@gmail.com. Shelagh’s artwork is on display at the Portwell Angel throughout June.
The Chamber of Commerce is also working on an interactive event at the Faringdon Festival to be held on 8th – 10th July as a way of raising awareness of the Chamber, what it does and who its members are. If you would like to find out more about any of the above projects or would like to know more about what Chamber membership involves, then go along to their stand at the Festival or come to the next meeting, which is on Monday 13th June at 6:30pm at The Crown Hotel. The next meeting of Faringdon Business Breakfast Club will be on Monday 6th June at Sudbury House Hotel from 7:15am. The guest speaker will be Merrill Jacobs of Genero Web Design. Breakfast costs just £10.00. The latest addition to FocusOn is the website Oxnews. Alex Nock and Holly Davies of FocusOn are currently developing this website that is designed for people who live, work, study or are simply visiting Oxfordshire and it includes user friendly directories such as Business, What’s On, Accommodation and much more. The site attracts many visitors and publishes a weekly newsletter which can be seen at www.oxnews.co.uk.

To the Manor Born Buscot Manor, the idyllic homely retreat for memorable occasions Buscot Manor is a fabulous newly refurbished bed and breakfast, a perfect getaway from modern life mixing antique charm with contemporary elegance providing a wonderfully homely atmosphere. Buscot Manor owner and manager Romney Pargeter runs the house with the help of her family and is keen to show off the house’s tranquil effects. “We have acquired some beautiful old clocks which complement the décor perfectly, but they no longer work. Time really does stand still when you come to Buscot Manor!” The house is an ideal haven for a great many events and mini breaks. Romney tells us, “This weekend we are welcoming a couple for a relaxing, romantic break before the arrival of their new baby in 8 weeks time and prior to this we hosted a sixteenth birthday party with a BBQ in the garden and a disco in the barn. Great fun.” Enjoy the splendour and grandeur of staying in a 15th century listed building which elegantly retains original features and is complemented by antique and period furniture, while also embracing 21st century amenities including wifi and flat screen TVs and DVD players. Truly the best of both worlds. Buscot Manor is an exceptional location for all special occasions. Perfect for elegant drinks receptions, dinner parties, weddings or pamper weekends with a welcoming hostess providing a warm and inviting space where you can live and breathe a part of history. The bedrooms are a touch above the rest with sumptuous wool rugs and divine feather duvets providing an elegant country house effect. Perhaps your local book club could have a special eventful meeting and come and stay as a group, have supper and recline in the snug room reading passages from your latest diversion and then retire to the aptly named after rooms of Shelley, Keats or Byron. Why not also take in some of the local pleasures and stroll up the road to the Buscot Tea Rooms, down to the River Thames or to the local pubs and restaurants, of which Romney will be happy to recommend the best for you. Romney wishes to extend her warm welcome to everyone and to offer an exceptional service tailored to the individual. “Anything really does go here at the Manor, we welcome families, you can even bring your horses and dogs if you wish, and have use of Local Discount the entire house and gardens. We really do try and go the extra mile and 5% off nothing is too much trouble,” she says. Now you really can have it all. Do I need Planning Permission for my Loft Conversion? The answer is: maybe not! If you are thinking of converting your loft this may come under permitted development, not requiring planning permission. A loft conversion for your house is considered to be permitted development, not an application for permission, subject to the following limits and conditions: Ÿ A volume allowance of 40 cubic metres additional roof space for terraced houses* Ÿ A volume allowance of 50 cubic metres additional roof space for detached and semi-detached houses* Ÿ No extension beyond the plane of the existing roof slope of the principal elevation that fronts the highway Ÿ No extension to be higher than the highest part of the roof Ÿ Materials to be similar in appearance to the existing house Ÿ No verandas, balconies or raised platforms Ÿ Side-facing windows to be obscure-glazed; any opening to be 1.7m above the floor Ÿ Roof extensions not to be permitted development in designated areas** Ÿ Roof extensions, apart from hip to gable ones, be set back, as far as practicable, at least 20cm from the eaves *Note: any previous roof space additions must be included within the volume allowances listed above. Although you may not have created additional space a previous owner may have done so. The permitted development allowances described above apply to houses not flats, maisonettes or other buildings. **Designated areas include national parks and the Broads, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, conservation areas and World Heritage Sites. Work on a loft or a roof may affect bats. You need to consider protected species when planning work of this type. A survey may be needed, and if bats are using the building, a licence may be needed. Building regulations approval is still required to convert a loft or attic into a livable space. Which looks at the structural stability, including the existing roof, strength of the floor, safe escape from fire, safe stairs, thermal and sound insulation.

The Dog Studio Canine Hydrotherapy for your favourite pooch Tucked away in the Oxfordshire countryside is a remarkable facility for man’s best friend. The Dog Studio is a dog grooming and hydrotherapy centre, run by husband and wife team Adam and Trish, and we paid them a visit to find out a bit more about what they do. So what’s canine hydrotherapy all about? Canine hydrotherapy is a special form of hydrotherapy just for dogs and it helps with chronic conditions and post-operative recovery as well as helping with dogs’ general fitness, especially if they are preparing for surgery. A lot of conditions in dogs can be aggravated by weight-bearing exercise and as well as affecting a dog’s overall fitness, the lack of exercise can cause obesity, which affects their health even more. Our hydrotherapy treatment work because the water bears your dog’s weight and allows them to move more freely, without putting any weight on joints which may aggravate a medical condition. Hydrotherapy can be used as part of a general fitness routine for dogs, and it can also help obese dogs to lose weight which, of course, will improve their general health. We also have an aquatic treadmill which is especially important for dogs with spinal and orthopaedic conditions, early stage degenerative disease and soft tissue injuries. Walking supported by the flow of water can really help to speed up the recovery process.
WHO’S NEXT?
What facilities does The Dog Studio offer? Our hydrotherapy treatments take place in a large heated pool which is sanitised to human standards and equipped with two swim jets, a ramp and a resting platform, as well as an electric hoist to lift dogs that are unable to walk along the ramp. We also have an aquatic treadmill which is all computerised, and a dog spa heated to 36 degrees, which has eight massage jets and is ideal for the treatment of arthritis and circulation problems, or just as a lovely treat for your dog. As well as the hydrotherapy area we have a fully equipped dog grooming parlour, and we are located in a beautiful area with extended, secure gardens so you can take your dog for a walk before their treatment. Who is behind The Dog Studio? Heading up the team at The Dog Studio is Trish Bedford. Trish has been running a dog grooming business for many years and because of her exceptional grooming skills and high standards, many of her clients have gone on to qualify for Crufts. Trish trained as a canine hydrotherapist at the acclaimed Hawksmoor Training Centre in Warwickshire where she gained her level 3 certificate in hydrotherapy it’s the only nationally accredited qualification in canine hydrotherapy in the UK. Supporting Trish is her husband Adam. He has been involved with the training of Newfoundland dogs for water rescue for many years so he knows all about the benefits to dogs of water and swimming. Adam’s daughter Ellesha is still at school studying hard to be a vet, but she helps out on evenings and weekends as much as possible. Ellesha is a fully qualified lifeguard and she has an amazing ability with dogs in the water, spotted when she first started working with a Newfoundland Dog display team when she was just 11! Completing the team are Debbie and Lisa. Debbie has worked with Trish since the start of the dog grooming business and she still does an exceptional job bathing and brushing the dogs. Lisa is the newest recruit; she’s currently training for her City & Guilds in dog grooming and she’s going to be a valuable addition to the team.

Wood Pigeon The most common UK bird
(Columba Palumbus)
There are estimated to be around 2.4 million pairs of wood pigeon in the UK, most of which appear to be in our garden. I’m considering ditching the bird table and just throwing full bags of seed straight out of the bedroom window. Blimey, can they eat or what? Ernie, the biggest of the lot, never stops chomping. He’s twice the size of all the others and something of a ladies’ man. His current partner Doris has just given birth to two rather ugly chicks; they are supposed to share the tending of their young, but Ernie’s not interested. He spends most of his time chasing younger models from hedge to hedge, whilst Doris looks on, totally bemused. I have been told pigeons pair for life - not Ernie, he’s working his way through the entire population of Oxfordshire! On the odd occasion when he does spend time looking after the gruesome twosome, Doris takes flight to stretch her wings and get some well earned food, only to find that Ernie’s scoffed the lot. There are traits that are completely unique to pigeons. They make milk to feed their young. This is not regurgitated food, but real honest-to-goodness milk. Furthermore, both males and females make this milk. No other male creature on earth can do this! That’s where Ernie got his name from - the old Benny Hill song, The Fastest Milkman in the West.

A pigeon and its baby are flying over Faringdon. The baby said, “I can’t make it, I’m getting too tired.” “Don’t worry,” the mother said. “I’ll tie a piece of string to one of your legs and the other end to mine.” The baby started to cry. “What’s wrong?” asked the mother. “I don’t want to be pigeon towed!” C. “FocusOn” (or Focus on Faringdon CIC, to give it its full name) is a Community Interest Company that was set up in 2008 to create, develop and manage activities and events to promote Faringdon. Its purpose is also to provide support for all groups who actively work to improve Faringdon and its community.
The latest addition to FocusOn is the website Oxnews. This is an innovative website designed for people who live, work, study or are simply visiting Oxfordshire including user friendly directories such as Business, What’s On, Accommodation and much more. The site attracts many visitors and publishes a weekly newsletter which can be seen at www.oxnews.co.uk.
Finally the forthcoming publication 52 things to do… far from the madding beaches is nearly ready to print!! For those who haven’t heard about it, the 52 team (made up of business interest groups and backed by the Faringdon Chamber of Commerce) have joined forces with the Vale of White Horse District Council to create a tourism book to showcase The Vale Of White Horse, with poems, articles and imagery about the Vale. The idea behind the project is to highlight to the wider public the uniqueness and distinctiveness of life in the Vale of the White Horse, showing off the © Phil Champion district’s natural environment, historic buildings, picturesque villages, and best walks and cycle routes, finding one activity for every week of the year. To purchase your copy keep an eye on The Advertiser for a forthcoming publication date. All members of the local community are welcome to contact Alex at FocusOn by email alex.nock@oxnews.co.uk or call 01367 246 136.

Wine Value The extent of the ‘current economic climate’ (haven’t we just grown to love THAT term?) continues to drive many of us towards products that deliver extra value. Often, I have had smug confessions from clients saying that they have been drinking the latest discounted or bargain wines from their local off-licence. In the wine trade there are ongoing debates (as too in the food industry) about the pros and cons of deep discounting or selling wines at cost in order to increase footfall or, as some put it, ‘lure’ consumers in to the shop for an opportunity for them to purchase many other items. All debates aside, the fact of the matter is, quite simply, if there is an offer on one product that is similar to another, chances are consumers will purchase the item on promotion (unless they have an established brand loyalty). I confess I will do this myself, in order to balance the budget towards something for a special occasion! I have hunted around locally for a couple of good quality wines that offer a bit of loose change in the pocket! Premiere Vouvray 2009 Loire, France Budgens £8.45 (down to £6.89 until 6th June) Vouvray is produced from the white grape, chenin blanc. It is said to have originated in the Loire Valley, dating back over a thousand years. The marginal climate of the Loire Valley produces chenin blanc wines of great finesse that can range from dry to sweet and climate has a hand in this, with the influence of botrytis cinerea, also known as noble rot. Chenin blanc grapes that are affected by noble rot shrivel and are covered in a grey mould. In short, the fungus depletes the berry of its water content and in doing so creates a greater concentration of the remaining compounds. In sweet wines this gives flavours of marmalade and honey, to name a few. This find from Budgens is a well-balanced generic wine that delivers a medium intensity of floral aromas; honeysuckle and japonica with quince and melon. The palate is off-dry and rich, honeyed with mouth filling flavours of quince, honeydew melon and a touch of minerality on the finish. The length is long and balanced, crisp and clean. Match with spicy dishes; we are spoilt for choice in this area for quality Thai take-aways – spoil yourself! Sollazzo Sangiovese/Merlot 2010 Umbria, Italy Portwell Angel £8.05 Produced from 70% sangiovese and 30% merlot, this wine is an approachable medium bodied red with a focus on primary fruit flavours. The predominant aromas are a mixture of forest fruits: blackberries and redcurrants with red cherries. The palate delivers blackcurrants, red cherries and vanilla spice with a hint of white pepper. It has a subtle, suedey integrated tannin structure that promotes the balance of this wine. The length is medium, finishing with refreshing acidity. Simplistic in style, it has the freshness to accompany a variety of cured meats, antipasto platters or a BBQ! By Donna Rogers, Den Boer Wines
