Business Update The April meeting of Faringdon Chamber of Commerce was the chance for members to decide how the Chamber should develop in 2011. The new President, Paul Brame, explained that the Chamber is in transition and he would like to encourage business owners to consider coming along to a meeting and finding out how the Chamber can support and promote their business. The Chamber has a powerful voice to promote businesses in the town both at local, county and national levels. It is regularly invited to attend meetings with town, district and county councils, local organisations such as OTCN and consultation meetings with representatives of the Bank of England. The guest at the next meeting will be Iain Nicholson of OTCN. This is a fast-growing and proactive business communications network for Oxfordshire with 1700+ members which includes Faringdon Chamber of Commerce. This meeting will be held on Monday 9th May. For more details contact Chamber Secretary, Jane Haynes on 01367 246136. The Chamber of Commerce is proud to be joint sponsor of a new book “52”. This book is being developed with Wantage Chamber of Commerce and Choose Abingdon Partnership. A competition was held recently in which almost 400 residents of the Vale entered paintings, photographs, poems and essays about their favourite places. The winning entries will all be published in the book when it goes to print later this year. The great Supermarket Debate goes on... The application from Waitrose goes before the Planning Committee on 25th May and the Tesco appeal will start on the 1st June at 10am and is expected to last up to five days. This appeal is scheduled to be heard at the Guildhall in Abingdon. However, Faringdon Town Council are pushing hard to have the appeal heard at a venue in Faringdon … watch this space!

Do you want to keep up with events in Faringdon? Then tune in to Faringdon Radio at www.faringdonradio.com. The main show is called Faringdon Local and concentrates on what’s going on in and around Faringdon. There will be a new show every two weeks. A key feature of the shows will be to present music from local bands or bands that have played in Faringdon. Nearly 40 businesses were represented at Faringdon Business Breakfast Club, an A to Z of professions from architects and accountants through to web designers and wealth strategists. It being early on a Monday morning, hot coffee was the order of the day before members were invited to help themselves to the superb buffet breakfast that Sudbury House Hotel has to offer. After the regular introduction round, the Club's treasurer, Lawrence Harrison of Tax Assist in Swindon, gave a comprehensive overview of the recent budget, concentrating particularly on how it affects the small business owner. It gave members plenty of food for thought and a lively question and answer session followed. From time to time Faringdon Business Breakfast Club has three 1-2-1 mini-meetings each in place of the usual speaker. So if you survive the flurry of Bank Holidays, and fancy a productive chat with three other members at the next breakfast on Monday May 9th, phone 0845 003 1340 to book your seat at Sudbury House Hotel. Fairford & Lechlade Business Club are hosting their Annual Food & Drink Festival on 1st May in Lechlade Market Place from 10am – 4pm. Following the official opening there will be an Antiques Fair at the Memorial Hall, in-house tastings at Pinos Italian Restaurant and Londis, Wine Tasting at Vin Est and lots of stalls with goodies to try and buy in the Market Place.

Metisse Motorcycles: motorcycling history right here in Faringdon What happens when you cross two scramble bike stars, Steve McQueen and an Italian roof thatcher? Metisse Motorcycles is the answer! That name may not ring many bells with you, but behind the name is the fascinating story of how two brothers triumphed over the big boys of motorcycle manufacture - and how Gerry Lisi brought their amazing heritage to Faringdon. The story begins in the 1950s in Hampshire. Brothers Don and Derek Rickman, stars of the British motocross scene, were famous for modifying their BSA bikes with off-the-shelf parts and when their competitors started asking for copies of their bikes, the brothers opened a retail business. They soon began designing frames and offered the designs for free to the top bike companies Triumph, BSA, Norton and Matchless; all they wanted in return was the chance to purchase bikes built to their own specification. However, the manufacturers turned down the offer so the brothers became manufacturers themselves, building frames that were paired with suitable proprietary engines. Their first frame was named Metisse, the polite French word for “mongrel”, and the name stuck. Over the years Metisse manufactured thousands of frames for a range of bikes, from dirt and motocross bikes up to huge police motorcycles with Triumph eight-valve engines. They were one of the biggest manufacturers of street bikes in the UK, and they also diversified into products as varied as BMX bikes, hospital beds and Ford-powered kit cars. Ironically, Metisse were producing motorbikes long after many of the larger companies had gone out of business. When the brothers retired they sold the business to Pat French and his company MRD, who continued production of the bikes. The story moves closer to home in 1999, when French teamed up with Gerry Lisi, a Metisse enthusiast. Italian-born Lisi was by trade a roof thatcher but after tiring of working outdoors in the British climate he had already started one business in the area, Carswell Golf Club. In his spare time Lisi was a keen dirtbike racer and he put forward a proposal to see Metisse safely through some difficult economic times, which was accepted. A new factory was built at Carswell, and when French retired, Lisi continued and grew the business. While famous for building frames and other parts, the one thing Metisse had never manufactured was a motor - so Lisi set out to pen his own one … and today he is building bikes with Metisse-designed and developed engines. Perhaps the most famous of Metisse’s “modern” motorbikes is actually a vintage one! Actor Steve McQueen was famous for his love of motorcycles and his favourite bike was a customised Metisse desert racing bike. Today Metisse Motorcycles manufactures limited edition exact replicas of McQueen’s modified Metisse bike - there will only be 300 available and they are endorsed by the actor’s estate. So now you know the story of Metisse Motorcycles … and how such a unique piece of history is being built in a factory just a couple of miles outside Faringdon!

The next instalment of the continuing story of …
The Parapet and The Poison Chalice So Spring slipped off the edge of the world and summer arrived before the buds on the trees had turned to leaf. Perhaps a false dawn? Will it be snowing in May? Will the Apple Blossom wither and perish in the next harsh frost? Of course not – for in this near perfect country of ours the Upbeat Daringfonians will keep away the wintry weather using the power of creative thought and positive action. Don’t doubt this: if you do, you will be the cause of any reversal in our weatherly fortunes. The long nights grow longer and the season of festivals approaches. A small group amongst the Daringfonians, the Focal Angels, decided they must Focus On the well-being of the Town and have decided to push forward with the annual party in July – just 70 sleeps away from now! The excitement is already building. You can feel it in the air: which is fortunate as the Party will be an open air event – pretty much run on thin air as well! The plans for the event are almost laid but, as ever, more willing helpers are needed so do feel free to volunteer. Permissions to hold the Party have been granted, permissions to barricade the roads approved, without charge. The stage has been planned, the sound production sourced and the light show arranged. A few extra barrels of ale are on order and some fermented grapes will see us good to go! Not much has been heard from the High Sheriff now for some 60 nights and nothing has been heard from the Nomads who don’t seem to oppose the idea of a Faringdon Party – but equally don’t seem to do anything to support it. A great shame and a wasted opportunity we think. But who are we to say?

Blackworth Service Centre At Blackworth Service Centre (Unit 18 Blackworth Industrial Estate) we recognise that having your car, van or any vehicle serviced is a costly inconvenience you could do without, so we offer a fresh approach to vehicle care. Blackworth Service Centre offers a wide range of services to suit your needs, from a single bulb change to a complete service. Our workshop is equipped to carry out all levels of vehicle care. We are proud to be recognised as cam belt specialists and our trained technicians know every vehicle. A cam belt is the rubber toothed belt that turns over the engine and it’s a major component on all vehicles. Without routine maintenance they will eventually snap, causing you major problems and expense - the average engine rebuild can run into thousands of pounds. We’ll service your cam belt while you wait, and you can even enjoy a relaxing coffee in our newly refurbished workshop. All vehicles are washed on return so your car looks, feels and smells serviced. We think you will find the Blackworth Service Centre approach to vehicle care refreshingly different. We set our standards high and from the minute your car comes into the service centre we take the utmost care to ensure you get the service both you and your vehicle deserve. Our services include cam belt expertise, electrical diagnostic, clutches, brakes, exhausts, tyres and valeting. We can also provide 24 hour recovery, MOT preparation and MOTs arranged at trade prices. Call us today to arrange a no obligation quote on your next service. Blackworth Car Sales Blackworth Car Sales, on the Blackworth Industrial Estate in Highworth, has over 20 years’ experience in the motor industry. The driving force behind Blackworth Car Sales is passion, understanding and attention to detail. Our dealership has built its reputation on providing courteous, honest and reliable service. Our standards are very high and we would feel proud to supply you with your next vehicle purchase. All our vehicles are carefully sourced before starting the Blackworth Car Sales process. We first valet all vehicles, paying attention to areas not usually visible. The cars are then machine polished to remove fine scratches caused by washing or road film and daily wear. It’s not till this process has been completed that we know if the vehicle is up to the high standards that we require. We proudly place our name on the vehicle and we understand the hours of enjoyment you will get from your new car. We think you will find the way we do business is noticeably different to other car retailers. At Blackworth Car Sales we like to exceed your expectations. Our stock changes regularly because we work on the basis that turnover is better than profit, and keeping our stock fresh offers our customers more variety. All our vehicles are covered by a comprehensive warranty, serviced to manufacturers’ requirements, and given a new cam belt. If an MOT is required we like our vehicles to have no advisories. We offer part exchange and we guarantee that you will be offered a very competitive price for your vehicle. Our services also include delivery and a vehicle purchasing scheme. If you don’t want the hassle of selling your old car we can do this for you and, by preparing it for sale the Blackworth way, we will return you more money than if you were selling privately. We can source any vehicle to your requirements, taking out the hours you’d normally spend looking for your next vehicle, and preparing it for you to drive away at your leisure. The story behind Hats Whiskers
Hats for Hire and for Sale A wonderful array of ever changing styles and colours enables us to bring you a range of hats to suit all ages and every occasion. We offer an old fashioned service in a country setting. In our well lit and elegant showroom you can peruse our hats at your leisure.
Hats Whiskers Tel: 01367 870248 or 07788 423624 Gainfield, Faringdon, Oxfordshire www.hatswhiskers.com
Some years ago I spent days searching for a hat to go with an outfit I was wearing for a family wedding. I could not find anybody to help me find a hat. It needed to complement the outfit, lift my skin color, and frame my face, but there was nothing out there. Eventually I settled on a head piece which left me feeling uncomfortable and I knew I had been rushed into making a dreadful mistake: this feeling haunted me and ruined the day. I then started to look at other people’s hats and wondered whether they had suffered a similar dilemma to me – thus “Hats Whiskers” evolved. Since then I have learned to block hats, trim them and even create bespoke headpieces for individual people. For me it is important that when a client wears an item from Hats Whiskers they are able to relax and enjoy the experience knowing that every care has gone into matching the hat to the person and the outfit. My stock is sourced from a variety of places. As Luton is the home of English millinery I find a wide range of trims and hats from there. I also stock hats from couture designers in London so I have something for everyone. In my stylish and private showroom you are able to peruse the collection and be advised on how best to complement your outfit Whatever the occasion I can help you, call me (Sarah) on 01367 870248 to arrange your appointment and prepare to be wowed.

Red Kite (Milvus Milvus) Has anyone noticed the increasing number of Red Kites hovering in the skies above Faringdon? Until fairly recently, these birds were in decline and on the verge of extinction. The red kite was an extremely common bird in medieval Britain. In towns and cities, rubbish and animal carcasses littered the streets. Red kites were useful because they ate the refuse and helped clean the streets. People considered them so valuable that anyone who killed one was punished by death! During Tudor times, household waste was no longer cast aside, reducing their food supply. In the countryside, kites and a whole range of other birds were classed as vermin and a threat to food production. In a complete turnaround, people were paid a penny for each one killed. By the end of the 19th century, only a handful of pairs of red kites survived in the remote hills of mid-Wales. Organised protection began soon after, firstly by the Kite Committee, followed by the RSPB.

In the late 1980’s an introduction programme began in England and Scotland. Red kites from Spain and Sweden (That’s why I can’t understand a word they say!) were released in the Chilterns, Oxon. The project proved successful when the first kites in over 100 years bred in England and Scotland. The British Trust for Ornithology named the red kite as “Bird of the Century” because of its determined fight back from the brink of extinction. (similar to Katie Price!) “A word of caution” Red kites mainly scavenge on dead animals … and what goes in must come out! When cleaning my car last Sunday, a large male red kite dropped what could be best described as a small Caribbean Island on the bonnet. Bless em!
