Business Update Broadband connectivity was one of the issues raised at the October meeting of Faringdon Chamber of Commerce. It was agreed that there is a need for much higher upload speeds to encourage hi-tech businesses into the town. The Chamber is encouraging everyone in Faringdon to join BT’s Race to Infinity - Over the next five years BT is rolling out superfast fibre optic broadband across the UK. The Race to Infinity gives us the opportunity to fast track Faringdon to get BT Infinity next. The five areas with the largest percentage of votes by December 31st 2010 will win the chance to bring superfast broadband to their area. BT will also donate £5,000 of computer equipment to a local community project. To vote simply go to 'VOTE NOW' (www.racetoinfinity.bt.com/home) and enter your details. The next Chamber of Commerce meeting will be held on Monday 8th November at 6pm. For more information please contact Chamber Secretary Jane Haynes on 01367 241162 or email jane.haynes@bordengate.com . Faringdon Business Breakfast Club will be held on Monday 1st November at Sudbury House Hotel where guest speaker Jonathan Russell, of local solicitors Rees Russell, will explain how he gets real business advantages from his expensive hobby of running a stable of dressage horses. Not only does his hobby promote the firm but apparently there can be tax relief benefits as well, plus other positive effects. As always, the meeting will start at 7:30am and the cost is £10 which includes a buffet breakfast. You can reserve your place today by phoning the booking line on 0845 003 1340 or contact Paul Brame at paul.brame@morgan-cole.com to book your place.

The supermarket saga continues apace! Not only do we have Tesco wanting to develop a site on Park Road, but we now have Waitrose drawing up plans for its first supermarket in Faringdon. Waitrose wants to build a 15,000sq ft food store and car park with more than 140 spaces on land north of Gloucester Street. It says local people will be able to see the plans at a public exhibition in November and comment on them. Waitrose hopes to submit a planning application by the end of the year and to open by 2012. Nigel Keen, Waitrose director of development, said: “We have wanted to come to Faringdon for a very long time, but have needed to be patient while we looked for a location that would meet the town's needs.” Chamber of Commerce member The Portwell Angel have just introduced their new menu that includes lots of hot dishes to ward off those cold winter days. Now you can also buy your favourite wine to take home from the Portwell Angel Off-Sales. Congratulations to all the artists who played at the Oxjam event at the Portwell Angel on 24th October. It was a great night - and raised some £450.00 for Oxfam. Well done to Mez Flint for organising the event and thanks to Mark Langley-Smith for looking after the sound. There are just a few tickets left for the Faringdon Black Tie Winter Ball on Friday 3rd December at Sudbury House Hotel. This event is sponsored by the Faringdon Chamber of Commerce and all proceeds go to Faringdon charities. Tickets are just £50.00 each and include a champagne reception, a three course gourmet meal and dancing. We have been very lucky to book the fantastic local band “Life & Soul” again this year. For tickets or more information please contact Chamber Secretary, Jane Haynes on 01367 241162 or email jane.haynes@bordengate.com

A cracking month for Nina!
Onwards & Upwards for Active
11 year old schoolgirl singer Nina Reiber-Hodgson, from King Alfred's Sports College in Wantage, is celebrating a triumphant month after winning the title of Best Vocal Performance at the
The current economic climate has proved costly for many companies, but weathering the storm is local recruitment agency Active Personnel Ltd. MD Nick Reiber-Hodgson feels that hard cut backs and an astute view to existing trading has saved the company, though he is not yet willing to talk about green shoots. Nick says “We are fortunate to have built up a really great trading relationship with our existing clients and we hold customer care as key to our ongoing success. We are seeing new candidates and new opportunities every week.” Active are optimistic about the future, and are keen to attract companies that may be seeing signs of recovery. As Nick says: “Employing the services of temporary workers seems the right thing to do for a lot of local businesses that are not quite ready to commit to permanent job roles.” Things can surely only get better.
Talent Oxford finals on 2nd October. The evening will be one to savour as Nina recalls receiving a standing ovation from the former X-Factor finalist Rachel Adedeji after she performed her version of the Christine McVie classic Song Bird. Nina added: “Rachel really loved my singing and gave me a big hug. We are keeping in contact and I am going to see her at one of her shows in London soon!” Nina received a beautiful glass trophy and an array of other prizes and would encourage other children to register for auditions for 2011. Talent Oxford has already started taking registrations for next year’s competition. To top what has already proved to be a hugely successful start to the month Nina came in as runner up to Ebony Cantwell at the King Alfred's X-Factor show, on the 21st October. Nina sang a rendition of Boys & Girls by Pixie Lott. Nina said: “The show was brilliant and the standard of all the singers was amazing. I know King Alfred's is a Sports College but I think it has some amazing musical performers too.” Nina is due to perform at Oxford's huge firework display on the 6th November in front of 25,000 people as part of her ongoing commitment to Talent Oxford. We think you will be seeing a lot more of this rising star in the months and years to come!

Wine Review Head over Heels Black Shiraz 2009 As the nights draw in and the fires begin to roar, I find myself searching for a rich, full-bodied red to complement stews or a hearty roast beef.
Saturday 6th November, 9.15am at Dancing Trousers Cookery School, Boughton Poggs £150pp.
Thursday 18th November at Goddard & Son Showroom, 7a Regal Way, Faringdon 7.30-9.30pm £19.95pp
An old faithful is the Berton Vineyards Head over Heels Black Shiraz – an Aussie wine that does not hold back on body and rich fruit extraction.
Thursday 25th November at Reynolds House 7.30pm £18.50pp
Packed with ripe, luscious blackberries, blueberries and plums, these flavours are well integrated with spices such as vanilla and cracked black pepper. The tannins are dense but not overpowering and add structure to the palate. The length is long and lingers, with the flavours detected on the palate.

Restaurant Review The Lamb and Flag Faringdon Rd, Longworth Tel: 01865 820208 Website: www.lambandflaglongworth.co.uk The Lamb and Flag went through major refurbishment in 2009 and the interior is now beautifully decorated in a more modern style but still in keeping with the age of the pub. Since the refurbishment my husband Steve and I are frequent visitors to The Lamb and Flag. We decided to visit one Monday evening on the spur of the moment, to take advantage of their "Monday Night is Ladies Night" - 50% off all food for all females offer, only to find on arrival that the place was packed to the rafters! Even without a booking in advance, James Lay, the landlord, was very happy to accommodate us. The Lamb and Flag has an English and authentic Thai menu; they even have Thai chefs. Steve and I both plumped for the Thai menu and I had the Chicken Red Curry at £6.50, a dry aromatic curry with Coconut milk and Thai herbs. My husband chose the Duck Curry with Red Curry Sauce, Coconut Milk, Vegetables and Thai Herbs at £6.95 and we both accompanied the main meal with portions of Egg Fried Rice at £2.00 each. I have never tasted a more aromatic, flavoursome Thai curry in my life and the quality of these curries never changes each time we visit. Unfortunately we have never tried their English menu yet as their Thai menu is just so yummy! The motto of the Lamb and Flag is "It’s our Pleasure" and I cannot fault the impeccable service, where literally nothing is ever too much trouble; they even opened up for Steve and me this year for a cooked breakfast on a Sunday morning just for the 2 of us! (I think as a special favour to us.) I have never experienced this level of service before and it keeps you coming back time after time.

I would highly recommend The Lamb and Flag. The Thai curries are full of flavour and very good value for money and the service is just awesome. Restaurant Review The Mighty Blighty Sunday Roast at The Blowing Stone, Kingston Lisle OX12 9QL Tel: 01367 820288 www.theblowingstone.co.uk I feel that I have truly immersed myself into the British culture when, as the autumn leaves begin to drop and the days draw in, I crave a hearty traditional Sunday roast. Based on previous culinary experiences, we head towards the picturesque village of Kingston Lisle, just outside Uffington. We fluked glorious autumnal sunshine and decided that the family was better suited to the outside dining experience where young children could happily roam and we could all bask in natural sunlight. Having the setting sorted, we moved onto the all important menu. There was a fabulous selection of starters, from cream of celeriac soup to fresh Cornish crab tart with crème fraiche and fish cream sauce, with prices ranging from £5.95 to £7.50. The mains menu boasts 3 roasts: 28 day aged Scotch roast beef, loin of local pork and English lamb. These were complemented with home-made horseradish, bramley apple or mint sauces respectively. The children were able to have a smaller portion of their choice of roast, macaroni cheese or scampi and chips. It was great to see a variety of other dishes on offer as well; monkfish and king prawn Thai green curry to vegetarian linguini with ratatouille and grilled goat’s cheese. Prices for the mains ranged from £11.95-£15.95. For dessert, the stars were the all-time home made favourites of sticky toffee pudding, forest fruit tart with clotted cream and warm Bakewell tart with morello cherry ice-cream. They also offer up to 6 flavours of ice-cream, which is great for the kids – 2 scoops at £4 or 3 scoops for £5.50. After much consideration, we decided to have a chicken liver pate for the starter. It arrived with salted French toast and delicious home-made chutney. Being concerned that most of this would be confiscated by the kids, we ordered extra toast. I was delighted with the response from the waiting staff; yes that would be no problem, but would you like the children’s meals to come out at the same time as the starter? This simple yet helpful offer solved ‘hungry’ issues and the children were happy to eat their roast beef whilst we leisurely dined on our starter. The pâté was smooth, flavoursome and well-textured, whilst the salted toast enhanced the flavours. Our roasts were beautifully presented, the meat carefully cut and arranged. I opted for the lamb, which was tender and infused with fresh garlic and rosemary. The vegetables were served on a side dish; carrots, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower cheese and a pumpkin and swede mash. All were piping hot and cooked to perfection. The gravy was rich with flavour, the result of it having been cooked traditionally from stock. I couldn’t help but eye up my husband’s roast pork which was served with crisp salted crackling and leek stuffing, which was going down very well. Unfortunately for us, we couldn’t squeeze in any desserts – albeit very tempting! The wine list is varied with up to 25 wines available by the bottle and four whites, reds and a rosé available by small or large glass. In addition, there is an extensive range of lagers and beers on tap and in bottle. The team behind the Blowing Stone are committed to presenting food that is sourced from local suppliers wherever possible and it is all cooked on the premises from scratch, from fresh ingredients. From my personal experience, The Blowing Stone is certainly on Oxfordshire’s culinary map!

Brooks's Bakery and Coffee Shop If you are looking for good, old fashioned service from a friendly face, then Brooks’s Bakery & Coffee Shop in High St, Highworth, with its exposed oak beams and olde worlde character, is the perfect place. In fact, we'd like to think that this 16th century shop, with its view of the Market Square, is such a delight that it would be easy to spend the whole afternoon there watching the world go by. For those in a rush, however, Brooks's prompt and efficient counter service can always pre-prepare rolls, sandwiches and cakes to order, for collection at lunchtime. It serves freshly baked breads include traditional loaves, overnight bread, olive & cereal batards, tomato, triple grain, and many more. There are also speciality cakes of a more unusual variety, from parsnip cake to banana and beetroot and many more, to take away or eat in with a great selection of hot meals and Brooks's specials, from breakfast, light lunches and afternoon teas. Hot food is served from 8am to 4pm closing at 5pm. Our breakfast menu is available on Sunday mornings between 9am and 12 noon. There is also a working lunch & take away buffet menu and celebration cakes.
Brooks's Bistro & Wine Bar Brooks’s Bistro & Wine Bar is a converted basement under Brooks’s coffee shop. There is something strangely exciting about eating underground, like dining in a secret hideaway, and the decor and friendly staff add to the atmosphere of the cellar. Tea, coffee and cakes are served “early” evening. Real ales, wines etc. can be had from the bar. Food is served on wooden platters , to share, with a choice of side orders, and are easy on the wallet. Once a month on the second Tuesday there is a specials night: a sample menu would be Pie, Pudding: Pasta + Btl. Wine for an all in price of £10.50 per person.

Faringdon Farcycles The Farcycles provide a home for cyclists in the Faringdon area. They are people who like to cycle in a group but in a less formal way than the mainstream organisations and clubs. In other words, it is a bunch of like-minded bikers, both female and male, who join up for the companionship of riding together. Unlike the more formal organisations, we do not ask for subscriptions. This means that we do not carry insurance and we do expect individuals to make their own arrangements as they see fit. There is also no formal leader for individual rides although routes are circulated to a list of friends in advance. These are completely optional suggestions – the way the route-setter might go if he or she was on the ride - it is each person’s choice if he or she wants to follow the suggested route. All current rides start from Faringdon’s Market Place on Saturday mornings. We generally go out on every week of the year, irrespective of the weather. This is made possible because our list of friends runs to about 120 households of whom 20-30 people turn out on any particular Saturday. The core rides all start promptly at 9 am. These are: Ÿ A short ride of 12-16 miles which usually stops for tea along the way Ÿ An intermediate ride of 20-30 miles Ÿ A longer ride of 30-45 miles that often follows the same route as the intermediate ride, with some extensions.

In addition, there is a 5-6 mile route for people who want to meet a little later. The start time for people wanting to do this ride is 10 am. Because we don’t ask anybody to commit to pitching up on any particular day, we cannot guarantee that any particular ride will be well supported in a specific week. For this reason, people who are keen to go for the two shorter rides are encouraged to use the Facebook group “Farcycles” to communicate with each other to ensure they have companions for any given ride. Occasionally we also organise special events ranging from the mildly competitive to the very laid back, such as pub rides. Have a look at Facebook for pictures (and, by all means, load your own). Oh, and in good weather we may also go for a bit of off-roading on Wednesday evenings. Finally, the Farcycles came together to promote cycling in our area because it is fun and it is healthy. It is also very sociable and many new friendships have formed from its existence. Everyone is welcome. Just pitch up when you feel like it. There is no commitment other than a smile and to look after your own wellbeing and that of your fellow travellers. Any questions: farcycles@btinternet.com
