ART CLASSES Drawing

NEW!

FIGURE DRAWING

PENCIL MAGIC – Sid DelMar Leach

For all levels The pencil is something everyone has and can use to good advantage to capture images onto paper or illustration board. The advantage of using a pencil is that many values can be created in a drawing by the pressure of the pencil, how it is sharpened and the hardness of the lead that goes into the make-up of any pencil. Art pencils are available from very soft to very hard with softest creating darker values. In this workshop you will be given line drawings along with value studies of the images and the pencils you will need for your exercise. Students will learn to sharpen a pencil so it can act as your brush in the creation of your own fine line pencil drawing. The magic of creating images with an ordinary pencil will hopefully excite your artistic creativity!

Through guided step-by-step prompts and demos at the start of each class you’ll allow your paintings to emerge. This is not a class about replicating a particular image or style or copying photos. Rather, the course encourages you to think outside the box and explore what is intuitive and organic to you. Your imagery may be evocative of something Art Instructor, Carla Golembe recognizable or totally abstract. There will be instruction in color, paint mixing, composition, layering and the use of various tools; however the focus will be to nurture you to dive into creativity. There are no “mistakes” in this class, only opportunities to let go of preconceived notions and build confidence. The class is open to anyone with a desire to play and discover. For all levels Original observation and creativity are our goals as we learn traditional techniques of realism for drawing and painting. We will use natural daylight and subject matter such as orchids, tropical plants and flowers, tropical fruit, shells, natural objects, interesting Art Instructor, Karen Eskesen props and more. Learn to mix rich Florida colors and earth tones from the primaries. Stretch your skills with positive/negative spaces and volume, while developing your own style. Instructor uses critiques, art history, slides and demos. All terms for this class are 6 week sessions.

For Beginners Watercolor has inherent characteristics that because of its fluidity can produce an exciting expression sometimes bold and at times subtle. This course will teach techniques that will produce loose, spontaneous brush strokes that “indicate not duplicate,” what is seen; applying paint in a way that’s different from other mediums, even from some other watercolor methods taught. The course will teach traditional realism in the Art Instructor, Manny Jomok manner found in the paintings of Homer, Sargent, Monet and the Impressionists as they dealt with the concept of light and how light affects form, color, value and composition. Students will first learn a brief history of watercolor which will enhance their appreciation of the medium. They will learn about materials, equipment and terminology associated with watercolors. The primary goals of this beginner’s class are to learn basic watercolor painting skills and to apply these skills to create a successful work of art using a photo image.

Will Kurtz (willkurtz.com) was born in Flint, Michigan and received his Bachelor of Landscape Architecture from Michigan State University in 1981. Eventually his passion for art superseded landscape architecture and he moved to New York at the age of 50 to attend graduate school at the New York Academy of Art. After graduation with an MFA he was selected to remain and do a one-year fellowship. He has since had several solo and group shows and has been represented by several galleries including Mike Weiss Gallery, New York, Queene Anne Gallery, Leipzig, Germany, Converge Gallery, PN and Stricoff Gallery, NY. FIGURE PAINTING EN PLEIN AIR – Eli Cedrone February 12 and 13, 2016 Fee: $375 Learn the fundamentals of painting from the live model in an outdoor setting. We’ll be working with well-lit models in quick poses, moving to longer poses as the class progresses. Topics covered will be outdoor lighting conditions such as direct, ambient and reflected light, how sunlight affects color and seeing color and value as a unit. This workshop will focus on the ability to paint quickly and accurately. The goal is not to create a finished painting, but to develop your intuitive sense by making numerous, quick studies with emphasis on spontaneity and freshness. Eli will explain her approach to light and shadow and demonstrate and work individually with all students. By creating a simple notan or value plan in b&w, you’ll learn how to break down Art Instructor, Ell Cedrone the fundamental form of the figure into large shapes or masses. Next we’ll explore how to translate the study into color with instruction on how to mix clean color in the correct value and temperature in order to create the illusion of light on the figure. In the event of inclement weather we will use reference material. Eli will paint a brief demo each morning in oil, however, you may work in any medium. Eli Cedrone (elicedrone.com) Soon after graduation from the School of Art & Design, Suffolk University in Boston, Cedrone began her career in Bermuda at Saatchi & Saatchi Advertising. She took a brief sabbatical from her work to study art in Florence, Italy. After nearly five years she set her sights on California living in Laguna Beach, working as an illustrator and magazine designer. She returned to Boston in 1996 where she continued studies at the School of the MFA and began painting full-time. Eli teaches workshop nationally and in Bermuda, California and Italy. Artist Statement: I’ve always been influenced by the power of images to express ideas and emotions. Painting is a process of discovery and decision making where disparate elements pull together until the image is clearly expressed. Primarily I work in oils and feel it’s important to work from life at least initially. I’m drawn to the human form where figures exist both in representational and painterly worlds. I will often explore a narrative theme in order to capture the emotional power of a moment in time. Ultimately my concerns are with the expressive qualities of light captured with paint. Contemporary Impressionism best describes my style.

We look forward to having you join us, meet some new friends and have fun! Meetup.com/Photography–The–Art–of–Seeing Organized and maintained independently by Jim Miller, Russell Levine and Irene Hill. Welcome to our group of creative and talented photographers. Our mission is to help you explore your photographic potential, and to spread the passion for the “art of seeing” to others so that they may use the camera as an artistic tool, much as painters use their brushes. We welcome all those, regardless of experience, with an interest in advancing their photographic skills. Many of our members attend Fine Art Photography Classes at the School of Creative Arts, but this is certainly not a requirement for membership in the group.

This group of visual artists has a deep passion in figurative drawing and painting as well as Plein Air/outdoor painting of landscapes and urbans capes. Focus is on representational art with an emphasis on realism/pseudo-realism/surrealism. All levels welcome and bring creative ideas out of the box but with boundaries that keep the art an upper level of beauty. Also contemplate on current, past and upcoming trends and how we as artists feel and cope with them. Together we feed each other’s creative hunger as well as make things happen in the arts!
