@deeringbay

A Letter From The President Dear Deering Bay Members, I hope you all had a great month of June. While it has slowed down here at the Club, our many projects and improvements are in full swing.

Leo Chomiak President Board of Directors

Thank you to Director of Golf Course Maintenance Dan Stover and his team for all the hard work they put in during their two-week aerification earlier this month. Due to the 22 inches of rain we received before the June aerification, the Golf Course will be closed for another aerification process from July 18th through July 22nd in order to aerify the fairways.

During this second aerification period from July 18th-22nd, the Food & Beverage Department, Membership Services, and Golf Shop will all be closed. The Tennis Courts and Fitness Center will remain open during this time. The 19th Hole is still underway, with construction crews and engineers currently working on fire service lines and grease interceptor connections underground. The piles are scheduled to be installed the week of July 18th, and the 19th Hole is anticipated to be completed in early 2023. We are excited for the addition of two pickleball courts in the lawn area, and we are awaiting final permitting approval. The parking lot will be getting a much-needed makeover once we receive the approved permitting, which will include landscaping, new signage, speed humps, and repaving. Our Phase II Renovation Committee continues to meet regularly with designers, architects, and builders. The committee’s next meeting will take place this first week of July. Have a happy Fourth of July with your friends and family! Leo Chomiak President

A Letter From The General Manager Dear Deering Bay Members, I hope you are all having an amazing summer, whether you are here in South Florida, traveling the US, or abroad!

Fran Roach General Manager gm@dbycc.com

While the Dining Room, Golf Course, Tennis Courts, and Fitness Center are not as busy during these summer months, it is still an exciting time here at Deering Bay with new team members, new Club members, and various projects. As Leo mentioned in his letter, new construction, renovations, and planning are all taking place each day here at the Club. I wanted to officially welcome two of our newest team members, Director of Fitness Stephen Tilton, and Accounts Payable Specialist Heydis Perez, who both started this past

Monday, June 27th. Stephen and Heydis are proving to be tremendous assets to the Club, and we feel very fortunate to have them here. Congratulations to our team member of the month, Kathy Villamizar! Kathy is our Accounts Receivable Specialist and does an amazing job helping our members with all things pertaining to member billing. Kathy has been an integral part of the Deering Bay team for over 5 years, and we would like to recognize her the hard work she puts in every day, both with our members and behind the scenes. As a reminder, the Clubhouse will be closed during our second aerification period from Monday, July 18th through Friday, July 22nd. During this time, the Food & Beverage Department, Membership Services Department, and Golf Department will be closed. The Fitness Center and Tennis Department will continue normal operations. The Clubhouse will reopen on Saturday, July 23rd. I wish you all have a wonderful Fourth of July; we hope to see you at our celebration on Monday! Fran Roach, PGA General Manager

News From Membership Dear Members, Did you know… That in 1908, James Deering and his half-brother Charles became interested in South Florida. Both started to invest heavily and buy up land. Their first purchase was 212 acres in Buena Vista. That small purchase blossomed and by late 1915, Deering started working on the soil around Buena Vista. He soon engulfed all that zone and started to branch out further down the coast, along Old Cutler Road.

Daniella Tosta Director of Membership & Marketing d.tosta@dbycc.com

By the big land boom of 1925, Deering and his halfbrother Charles had basically bought out most of the land South Miami was later built on. Two of the most recognizable houses/mansions of the lower half of Florida are theirs; The Deering Estate in Cutler Bay and Villa Vizcaya, on Biscayne Bay in Coconut Grove.

He hired the great Chicago landscape architect Ossian Cole Simonds to lay out the grounds. Here he supported the New York Botanical Garden by providing them 25 acres to grow cacti. Around this time, Deering made the acquaintance of botanist David Fairchild and allowed the US Department of Agriculture to establish an experimental station on 25 acres of his property. Deering became an avid naturalist and preservationist. Deering Estate. Before Deering seized the place the area had a wooden house known as the Richmond Cottage. It was a small inn manned by the Richmond family, primarily the matriarch Edith Richmond. If you came to Florida for a period of time, you stayed at the Richmond’s. This place was a happening joint, and it became an outpost for visitors conducting the business of Henry Flagler’s East Coast Railroad The Cottage received a plaque in 1901 when it was named: “The most southern hostelry in the continental United States by The Miami Metropolis in 1901.” The area around Cutler Bay was basically a moorland barely inhabitant with nothing but out-ofcontrol vegetation and crocodiles, then in 1916, a year after Deering stayed at the Richmond Cottage, he buys it. By 1922 Deering had leveled most of the hotel, rebuild in its place a huge mansion and moved in until he passed away in 1927.

News From Golf Dear Members,

Craig Corcoran Director of Golf c.corcoran@dbycc.com

Thank you all for your patience and understanding as we are emerging from our longest course closure of the year. The 2-week aerification that we underwent in June went, for the most part, extremely smoothly. We had quite a bit of rain leading up to the first day of our closure, so Dan and his team had to pull together to get everything done despite the delay at the beginning of the closure. The course is already bouncing back nicely, and I am sure we will see it continue to improve over the next week.

As we move forward into July, please keep in mind that we will be closing the course once again the week of July 18th through July 22nd. We appreciate your continued understanding as we work around Dan and his team to make sure that Deering Bay continues to be in the best shape it has ever been in! We have quite a few things going on in July. We have a 4th of July shotgun called our “Red Ball Tournament.” It is an 8:30am shotgun as we will be closing the course at 3:00pm on the 4th. The course will be closed on Tuesday, July 5th. Also in July, we have two weeks of junior camps on the schedule. The first camp runs from July 5th (Wednesday) to July 8th (Friday). The second camp runs from July 26th (Tuesday) to July 29th (Friday). In addition, there is a Junior PGA Tour event coming to Deering Bay on July 13th. I hope everyone has had a great start to the Summer and that it only gets better from here! Thank you, Craig Corcoran, PGA

News From The Golf Course Dear Deering Bay Members, My team and I are happy to report our first aerification was a success. The course is recovering and will be in great shape soon. Thank you for your patience throughout the closure. Coming up in July, we will DryJect the course. DryJect is a machine that uses high-pressure water to penetrate the turf root zone. The machine also uses a vacuum technology to fill holes to the surface with high volumes of sand or amendment. This process is great for the course as it helps regulate and correct soil composition levels while being minimally invasive in terms of its impact on course conditions. This means that the grass around our course will continue to get healthier and you as a player will be back out there after a shorter closure!

Daniel Stover Director of Golf Course Maintenance d.stover@dbycc.com

I am confident that all of the work put in this summer will make a tremendously positive impact on the Golf Course! Dan Stover

News From Food & Beverage Dear Deering Bay Members,

I want to wish you all a very happy and safe 4th of July weekend. Please stop by the Clubhouse from 11:00am to 3:00pm on Monday, July 4th for a celebration including food, drinks, games, music, and more!

Anacelis Torres Director of Food & Beverage a.torres@dbycc.com

From everyone here at Deering Bay we appreciate all the members that joined us for our events during the last month. It was wonderful to see so many families, friends, and smiles.

July is here and that means Executive Chef Surelys, Executive Sous Robert, and I have been planning new menus items and we would love to hear what you think about the new dishes. On Friday, July 8th we will hold Lobster Fest (dinner time only), which will include five specialty dishes centered around one of the best summertime foods, lobster! July 13th through July 16th is Burger Week, where we will have 3 different burger creations to be offered daily for lunch and dinner. At the end of the month on Wednesday, July 27th, we will be hosting a wine tasting class. Keep an eye on your email for more information! Once again thank you for allowing us the honor to host your special moments with us, from wedding, to birthdays, to graduations, and to luncheons, we look forward to seeing you here for all your special events. Happy Independence Day form all of us at Deering Bay! Anacelis

News From Tennis Dear Members, We would like to wish everyone a safe and fun summer. It is a little quiet here at the Club, but we are continuing as scheduled with our summer clinics for all those who would like to join us.

Pedro Leon Director of Tennis p.leon@dbycc.com

The Ladies Clinics are on Tuesdays and Thursdays, starting at 9:30am and ending at 11:00am. Also on Tuesdays, we have the Men’s Clinic from 7:00pm to 8:00 pm. We know that the summers are hot, but we must continue to brush up on our skills. Please call the Pro Shop and let us know if you would like to attend.

The games are still taking place during summer, the ladies are doing well in the USTA Combo League competition and our families are having a good time. We encourage you to come out and support your fellow members. One of our priorities is to keep the courts in the best conditions to make the members proud, so this summer we are placing new LED lights and also adding clay to the courts. Most important of all, we would like to remind everyone to wear the proper attire and tennis shoes. Please keep a look out for flyers with dates and times of future events or contact the tennis Pro Shop for further details or questions. We would like to wish everyone a happy summer season and we look forward to seeing new and familiar faces. Sincerely, The Tennis Pro Shop Family

News From Fitness Dear Deering Bay Members, I am very excited to be leading the Fitness Department here at Deering Bay. We are lucky to have such amazing facilities here at the Club, and the Fitness Team is planning some fun new classes and events to make your experience and fitness journey the best it can be!

Stephen Tilton Director of Fitness fitnesscenter@dbycc.com

I would like to thank Renny Ramirez for such a warm welcome to Deering Bay. I can tell how much of an asset Renny is to the Club, and I am lucky to have him as a team member here in the Fitness Department. As we head into July, we are planning some great events to enhance the members health and wellness experience.

July will be a memorable month here on the bay starting with our health and wellness events such as National Juice Day, National Pet Photo Day, National Tape Measure Day, National Lollipop Day, National All or Nothing Day, and National Love Is Kind Day. Keep an eye out for flyers and other announcements coming shortly! We will also be implementing new classes to establish a better sense of inclusion and community. These elite classes include “Fit Don’t Quit”, “High Five Athlete,” “Team Strike Kickboxing,” and “Beauty Barre.” These functions will cultivate a strong sense of deep rooted connections between the staff and members. We celebrate all and encourage everyone to participate as we will survive and thrive together through this summer. July is also UV safety awareness month so be on the lookout for a special event to address this matter. Let’s push the reset button within Deering Bay’s culture and community by showing each person brings value and respect to the table through fitness. Looking forward to meeting everyone and becoming a game changer in each of your lives. Teamwork Makes the Dream Work, Stephen
