Dear Fellow Club Members,
This is the final time I will be writing to you as Club President and as a member of the Board of Directors. My term as Board member ends in December.
When I reflect back on the past 6 years, I can’t help but to think about the incredible transformational journey the Club has been on. That journey was much like a roller coaster ride with many twists and turns with peaks and valleys along the way. Throughout the journey there was steady and continuous progress being made to make the Club better None of the many accomplishments would have been possible without the unwavering support from the members and I thank you for that. I recognize the many inconveniences the members had to endure at times.
I want to thank the past Boards and committee members who preceded the ones I have been a member of, as they had a vision of what the Club could be and laid down the ground work to set us on our transformational journey. Without their efforts we would not be where we are today.
I also want to thank the current and past Board and committee members who I had the privilege of serving with these past 6 years for their input, support and countless contributions.
A special thanks goes out to the Club‘s tireless hardworking staff. They are the ones that make our wonderful experiences and interactions at the Club possible. Can’t thank them enough.
Of all the accomplishments of the past 6 years, I think the greatest is the assembling of the current leadership team by the Board. I think we all look back at the hiring of Scott Mason as our General Manager and Chief Operating Officer as being the pivotal event that led to elevating the Club to a different level The leadership team led by Scott is changing the culture at the Club to one focused on delivering quality services and experiences to our members and their guests. They are striving to make the Club the employer of choice.
I know the transformational journey we are on is far from over. There is still so much to do. There are incredible renovation plans for the third phase of the clubhouse and golf course. I am more than confident that the Club’s leadership, led by future Boards, will successfully guide us through journey to our destination of being the best Club in South Florida and the envy of all the other clubs. Deering Bay is unique and a hidden gem. Its shine will soon come to light for all to see. Like the old adage, I know the best is yet to come.
Thank you again and I want to wish you and your families Happy Holidays!
Leo Chomiak
Club President

Dear Member,
Thank you. Our team speaks daily about their interactions with you and your families. It is wonderful to see the smiling faces of friends and family throughout the club. Our team reflects daily on your noted opportunities for improvements, and we speak openly within our team that most of these interactions are in the spirit of warmth and welcome. Our Deering Bay Team is a family and many of us feel like an extension of your family. For that, you have my personal thanks
Please know we are committed to working daily to identify and improve our service delivery and your club experience It is my hope that you see and feel the changes we are working through together. Small touches, consistent maintenance and smart project planning are in full motion. Many things you will simply see and feel. Larger projects you will always be informed about activity and timelines Training is going to be a priority Service delivery is going to improve.
As I reflect on my five-month tenure at your club, it has been a fun journey, and I have been guided well by our team. Together we now share a belief that we can and will get better. You have my commitment. I look forward to our next Town Hall on Tuesday, December 3rd at 5PM, when we will again gather to highlight renovation, course conditions, financial outlook, board elections and other club announcements.
In the spirit of the holiday season, we all have much to be grateful for at Deering Bay.

Pedro Leon Director of Racquet Sports
Entering the holiday season, we want to give a big thank you to the new families who joined the club, and to all the members for their continued support and participation in the racquet sports program.
This season promises to be eventful, and full of high energy out on the courts. We look forward to seeing everyone participating in the exciting events and our weekly line up of fun activities.
As Director of Racquet Sports and having been with the club for 23 years, it has been incredible to see the growth in the program and to see the courts full of life day in and day out. As a former ATP player, and past member of the Cuba Davis Cup team, I would like to share with you some of my favorite tips:
For better play on clay court: Do not go to the net on every short ball, choose to go to the net only when you think you can hit a good approach shot, not just when the ball is short. You will be passed easily if you approach the net on junk.
For improving your confidence on racquet sports: Be patient with yourself, concentrate on making steady and sure progress.
Congratulations Sara!
Congratulations to one of Deering Bay’s beloved tennis pro, Sara Seivane on her recent win at the Coral Oaks Invitational presented by The Collection.

There have been great improvements to the Pool area as the Department continues to be utilized by the Members. If you haven't already noticed the pool lounge chairs and cabanas have been refurbished back to their original color and condition. It has been a collective team effort by Erick and the Maintenance team. The missing numbered flags have been replaced on the pool lounge chairs to ensure that Members can order from the 19th Hole wherever they are seated. Two additional pool umbrellas have been added for optimal shade
We are pleased to welcome Fabrizio, our new Pool Attendant, to the team! Fabrizio will be working Saturdays and Sundays, ensuring the pool area remains clean, organized, and enjoyable for our Members During the week, the pool area is maintained by myself and the Fitness Attendants, Monday through Friday.

Instructor Karin shares how in Venezuela every year is an important tradition to meet with the whole family to spend a weekend cooking Hallacas. Hallacas is the union of two words that mean the food from over there (referring to the ingredients from the Spanish conquest, such as olives, raisins and peppers) and the food from here (for the ingredients that were harvested in the country before the arrival of the Spanish, such as corn and banana leaves). These two ingredients come together in a single food called Hallacas and reminds us of the union of the two cultures that exist in our country. From the great-grandparents down to the young children, everyone is given a task, albeit small, but the feeling of “family” and “tradition” is everything in the Venezuelan culture.
Days before the traditional Hallacas, or Venezuelan tamales are made, one must chop, sort and clean banana leaves. The guiso, or meat stew used to fill them, was cooked days ahead as well, giving it time to gather a robust flavor. Sazon and aji dulce (a local, small pepper) made up the flavor line along with onion and garlic. The meats used could be pork, beef, and/or chicken, and on occasion, there would be a vegetarian version. Big stock pots were used for the guiso and the smells engulfed every corner of the house. During preparation we celebrate with tragos (drinks) made with rum and Ponche Crema (Venezuelan coquito). Let’s not forget the traditional holiday aguinaldo (music) that was a great part of this 3- to 4-day family tradition. The day the hallacas were assembled, was long and exhausting, but so rewarding. Everyone had a job to perform, from setting up the leaves, to carefully placing the masa (corn meal base) on the leaf, then filling with the guiso, to the final tying of the package with string. The Hallacas were put in the fridge, or frozen, depending when they were going to be enjoyed. Hallacas are typically served on Noche Buena (Christmas Eve), and New Year’s Eve.”

Dan Stover Director of Agronomy
As our season here at Deering Bay is well underway, we are ramping up efforts to manage one of our often-overlooked pests: nematodes. If you are a long-standing member of Deering Bay this topic might be very familiar, where just a decade ago the greens here at Deering Bay had extremely high populations and severely damaged putting surfaces as a result.
These microscopic worms are most prevalent in sandy soil, and though many are harmless, some species do attack turfgrass roots, leading to a weakened plant that’s vulnerable to drought, disease, and wear. In the past, about 15 or so years ago, golf courses had few chemistries that proved to be highly effective in their control Since then, these chemicals have been taken off the market due to their effect on the environment and left superintendents trying to figure out how to manage the issue before chemical companies could react and create new products. Unfortunately, that gap in available nematicide products resulted in extremely poor putting surfaces many years ago.
Fast forward to within the past 10 years, now both Bayer and Syngenta have come out with new nematicides. These chemicals have favorable environmental profiles but still have serious long term side effects to the balance of microbiology within the soil. One big mystery for our industry remains in how to effectively manage nematodes in a sustainable manner For this reason, nematologists from the University of Florida and a PhD in Plant Pathology began a multi-year study at a dozen or so of the best courses in Florida. Two years ago, Deering Bay entered in the last available slot in this study and together have been getting closer and closer to a sustainable approach to nematode management. I am happy to report that as of last month we have solidified Deering Bay as one of the top performing golf courses within this study
Our efforts to create a sustainable approach to managing these pests are finally showing in real, measurable results. Green speeds are now achievable without a large toll to the overall health of our putting surfaces and our greens are able to cope with large stints of poor weather while other courses struggle. Through the advice of our University of Florida Nematologists and Plant Pathologists, we are well under way in solidifying Deering Bay as a pioneer in nematode research
You can rest assured that the determination of our management staff will always remain unmatched in providing a better playing experience. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to reach out to me at d.stover@dbycc.com.
Golf
SwingingIntothe HolidaySpirit!
Hello membership,
Craig Corcoran Director of Golf
We have officially kicked off our 2024-2025 golf season. It is great to see our seasonal members back in town and playing golf. We have been gradually ramping up to peak season rounds and are now at a time when the tee sheet is getting busier and busier. Keep in mind that, because of this, it is important for all members to add the names of their playing partners to the tee sheet We will be calling people on the tee sheet Friday and Saturday afternoon to confirm your foursomes and add “Join Me” slots to incomplete foursomes. This is largely an effort on our part to be accommodating to new membership who would like to play at historically high-volume times on the weekends.
In other news, our 2024-2025 season has gotten off to a great start! We have kicked off both our Men’s and Women’s Golf Seasons with great turnout for their respective Opening Days. We hosted our Men’s One Day Member-Guest Croc Cup. The turnout was great and a special congratulations to our 2024 Croc Cup Champions, Byron Garoufalis and Trent Fye (bottom left). We also would like to celebrate our Men’s Fall Member-Member Champions, Nic Genemaras and David Garcia (bottom right)
The ladies have also had some fun events from our Opening Day “FORE” the Girls tournament to our “Boos and Birdies” Halloween Scramble. We are excited to bring the momentum from a great season opening and carry it throughout the year! We have also put on some great kids’ events.
Our Back-to-School Clinic Series was a huge hit, seeing anywhere from 5-6 kids all the way up to 12-15 kids every class session we hosted The junior program is thriving and that is evidenced by the great turnout we also had for our Sunday Funday junior tournament and well as our Adult/Child Scramble.
The golf calendar is brimming with excitement well into May, as we gear up to host an array of exceptional events and tournaments Events include the Winterfest for WGA, the New Year Junior Golf Series and the upcoming Men’s Team championships and President’s Cup.
We are incredibly proud of the golf team and the remarkable contributions they bring to the club each day. This year, we have seen tremendous growth from team members like Caden and Charles, who continue to excel and embrace new opportunities for learning Nicole, with over 15 years of dedicated service, has been a cornerstone of excellence in the Pro Shop, and we are deeply grateful for her unwavering commitment to our members. Jonathan’s continued growth and willingness to take on increasing responsibilities highlight his exceptional knowledge and work ethic, setting a high standard for our team.
As we continue the exciting locker room renovations, our team has worked hard to minimize any disruption to our members A shining example of this effort is Robert’s relocation to the cart barn, ensuring he can continue to serve our golf members seamlessly. Once the renovations are complete, Robert will have a dedicated space conveniently located between the men’s and women’s sides, where he can assist all members with ease.
It is dedicated team members like these who truly make Deering Bay feel like a second home As we look ahead to the holidays and the new year, we are excited to continue creating unforgettable experiences both on and off the course. Thank you for being a part of the Deering Bay family!

Fromthe CommunicationsManager
I hope you enjoy reading the quarterly newsletter as much as I’ve enjoyed putting it together It has been a rewarding experience stepping into the role of Communications Manager and helping to improve the quality and consistency of our Club’s communication with its members.
It’s been wonderful to receive frequent compliments from members about the weekly e-blast sent out every Monday, which includes club updates and event flyers. We’ve also upgraded the flyer displays in the fitness department hallway and the elevator to present Club happenings in a more appealing way Additionally, Daniella has done an excellent job increasing our social media presence, with more frequent updates on Instagram and Facebook to keep members informed and engaged
This summer, the Club undertook a refresh of the website and mobile app, a project in which I played a significant role I hope members find these updates not only more visually appealing but also more functional. With enhanced features and regular updates, the website and app have become valuable resources - whether you’re checking food and beverage specials or staying on top of our busy calendar filled with activities planned just for you
While I deeply appreciate the members and all they do for us, I also want to take a moment to express my gratitude for the staff It is a core belief of mine that beautiful as any country club may be, their true strength lies in the employees who work tirelessly to make them exceptional. Recognizing and appreciating these employees goes a long way to setting a strong culture, which in turn enhances the experience for both the staff and the members they serve.
I am proud to be part of the Deering Bay team, which is dedicated to enhancing and elevating the club experience There is so much potential here, and I am confident we will continue to see this wonderful club thrive and grow.
Sincerely,
Camilla Roa
