FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear Deering Bay Members and Families,
I hope this letter finds you well as we enter the final month of our first quarter in 2025. Deering Bay has been on a transformational journey—while progress has not always followed a straight line, our positive trajectory is undeniable.
Over the past several years, we ' ve invested $14 million in our Clubhouse, delivering significant upgrades to our physical structure—the pool area, pickleball courts, 19th hole, and dining areas. We're fortunate to have a first-class GM & COO in Scott Mason, who is leading a revitalized and strong management team (I encourage you to read his letter in this publication).
I would like to thank the many past board members who have brought us to this position. This year two valued members stepped off the board Steve Jacobson and Leo Chomiak. Both performed admirably while facing significant challenges
I want to especially recognize Leo, who is finishing his second six-year term of service. During his most recent term, I had the privilege of serving alongside him for the past three years. Leo faced extraordinary challenges—navigating COVID-19, overseeing endless construction, working with five different general managers, and addressing financial mismanagement issues. Through it all, he never lost sight of his vision for what this club could become the best club in South Florida. Leo, a heartfelt thank you!
I encourage all members who haven't already done so to personally thank both Steve and Leo when you see them
We still have important work ahead:
Construction: We will complete the locker room renovation early this summer, make improvements in the slower months ahead to modernize our golf shop, endeavor to enhance both the Pool Terrace and Bar Terrace, and at the appropriate time, undertake golf course renewal.
Financial Stability: Thanks to Joe’s leadership, we have made significant progress to stabilize our financial position, providing clean financial reporting that now enables us to run the club with effect and accurately plan for the future.
Maintenance: Erick and his team have improved maintenance operations and will now consistently complete all necessary work, and most importantly, provide proper preventative maintenance.
Food & Beverage: As Scott has noted, he and his team are focused on elevating our F&B experience. This is a very important part of the club as food is the one thing that touches each member. I have complete confidence in their success.
Committee Structure: We have enhanced our committee structure to take proper advantage of member insight and recommendations for Board consideration. We have capable and committed Chair and Vice Chairs.
The Board will be hosting Town Hall with Scott on Thursday, April 24th It is important we be transparent with the results following the conclusion of the Forensic Audit and 2023 Financial Audit. We will also review Year End 2024 Financials and our 2025 Capital Plans.
A major source of my confidence in our future success is our dedicated staff. I want to express my sincere gratitude to all team members for their daily contributions. I have called Deering Bay my home for 20 years and I've had countless opportunities to interact with them. Their commitment to making a positive difference is evident.
While occasional mistakes happen, their service-oriented intent is clear. Also clear is Scott’s focus with the team for consistent communication and their request for feedback. Please utilize the Club IQ surveys as just one tool to share your thoughts and observations The Department Heads lead the effort with Scott to review all member feedback and to personally respond. This is a recent change the Board appreciates and endorses.
I'd like to share my vision for our Club. We should be the gem of private clubs in South Florida. We have a very special, tropical, first-class golf course. We are the only private club with both a deep-water marina and an 18-hole championship golf course between the Florida Keys and Palm Beach County. With the combined efforts of our management, staff, Board, and members, I am confident we will achieve this vision to truly be the GEM of South Florida!
Sincerely,

RANDY MILLIAN
Club President
FROM THE MANAGER
Members,
My philosophy is that change is inevitable so it should always be embraced. I am confident you agree, the ability to adapt is invaluable in life. We have a lot of projects, planning, and innovation underway, so a lot is being asked of everyone on our team. With that in mind, I’d like to reiterate what Randy said about our people, “their commitment to making a positive difference is evident.”
I’d like to dedicate my contribution this quarter to the leaders on our team. Without their trust and dedication, our entire team would not have the confidence to act with autonomy nor the willingness to do so. As leaders we continue to prioritize culture, and we are focused on reinventing what support looks and feels like for our team. As leaders we can always be more effective, and we will always strive to be better in serving others
Dan, Director of Agronomy & Grounds, has been at the Club for more than three years At our recent team outing where we celebrated together and voted in a blind ballot, Dan won the Superlative Award for ‘Most likely to win the Nobel Peace Prize’. Dan is articulate and maniacal about course conditions. You will soon read his abbreviated thesis on our greens. Impressive. Most importantly, Dan is loved and respected by his tenured team.
Craig, Director of Golf, is our Big Thinker. He is a leader that truly cares, and he has a passion for sharing motivational concepts with anyone that will listen. Craig is loved by his team, and his simple yet smart manner helps him navigate any situation with a sense of calm and a demeanor to deescalate. He is a good golfer and a leader among his peers.
Jess, Director of Fitness & Wellness, is one of a kind Dedicated and high energy, everything comes from the heart Dynamic with programming and evolving every day as a leader and contributor, Jess also takes on project work around the club as a taskmaster This year, she will be focused on working with our next Executive Chef to incorporate nutrition and wellness into activities, club menus and special events
Camilla, EA and Communications Manager, loves what she is doing but her heart will always be in Food & Beverage. She is thriving in her current role coordinating all club communication. High energy and committed, Camilla makes each department manager better. A resource to everyone, she is creative and does a great job managing her work without the need for direct supervision. Camilla is dedicated and fun.
Daniella, Director of Sales & Kids Club, has been at the club for nearly 18 years. Her smile is infectious. Three years ago, through restructuring, Daniella took on the Sales Director position. 56 new members have joined since January of 2024, so she keeps busy Her true passion is member relations and everyone knows Daniella Your families enjoy her special touches and dedication in Kids Club We will be fortunate to have Daniella here another 18 years
Erick, Chief Engineer & Facilities Manager, is a success story. In less than one year, Erick was promoted from engineer, to supervisor, and now he leads the team. A strategic partner to me, Erick thinks before he speaks, and he is levelheaded. His project management skills are strong, and he is very effective at identifying opportunities for improvement. Erick’s leadership makes a difference every day and his manner is revered. Erick represents the future for Deering Bay.
Pedro, Director of Racquet Sports, is an emotional leader among his peers. He is a special man, and I am so proud of how he has reinvented the tennis experience while establishing pickleball. Neither activity has suffered as Pedro has achieved balance. He is here morning, noon, and night. Few people work as many hours as Pedro. In my view, he is a role model in being the face of his department We all have something we can learn from our 23-year Deering Bay leader
Joe, Director of Finance & Strategic Planning, is just what we needed at Deering Bay. Smart, insightful, and intellectual, Joe’s temperament and experience made him my chosen partner in strategy and fiduciary. With both of us being compliance officers, Joe brought value and inspiration to each leader from day one. The barriers to entry were countless, no pun intended, and Joe has been professional and accountable about accuracy. Soft spoken but thoughtful, Joe has a great sense of humor, and he has all our respect.
Crystal, Director of Food & Beverage, has been at the club for two years Responsible for the largest department at the Club, Crystal cannot find enough hours in the day She takes things on with conviction She wants to make a difference. A certified sommelier, Crystal brought a depth of restaurant and club experience to the role. Establishing standards and bringing order to the team have always been her priority. She is hard working and well spoken.
Amanda, Director of Clubhouse Experience & Events, represents the acumen we should all emulate. Kind and gracious, her smarts and commitment cannot be overlooked. Responsible for coordination of all events, she has an eye for detail, and she leads with genuine care with everything she does. Events are often emotionally charged so the best clubs have someone that can always turn lemons into lemonade. Amanda is our person, and she is capable of more.
Jorge, AM Restaurant Manager, Chris, PM Restaurant Manager, and Kevin, Sommelier and Restaurant Manager, are all important parts of the learning curve and reinvention soon underway in food and beverage Jorge will manage the new training program for all service staff Chris will combine his endless enthusiasm and love for Deering Bay with his extensive experience, to bring more fun and consistency to our services. Kevin will help us bring the new locker rooms to life with vibe and style. I am thankful for the commitment these three have made to the Club. I am committed to their individual growth, and I will now work more closely with them to achieve in food and beverage both at the table and the fiduciary.
Joseph, Executive Sous Chef, and Robert, Kitchen Manager, are a dynamic duo in the kitchen. With nearly seven years of Deering Bay experience between them, they are the special sauce that makes the kitchen work. I could not be more proud of the commitment to providing stability to the team in transition while reinforcing the fact that quality of food has always been their compass Simply put, these two leaders are collaborative and creative Equal accountability partners in the recently renewed strong culture in the kitchen, they both have bright futures at Deering Bay We are lucky they want to be here long term They have my full support and once a new Executive Chef is identified, I will be clear on our investment in Joseph and Robert
Many things are in motion. We will be innovative and consistent. Please continue to be patient with us. We are executing the plan to make Deering Bay an employer of choice and the envy of country clubs in South Florida.

Pro TipS from Pedro:
Tip for better play on clay court: Generate more pace by stepping into the ball on your volley. Clay courts slow down shots, making it easier for opponents to track them down. A great volley on hard courts is only a good volley on clay— so add extra punch to your volleys to keep your opponents on their toes.
To improve your confidence in racquet sports, develop a habit of positive thinking. Use encouraging self-talk and eliminate words like " can’t," "impossible," "should," and "I have to." Instead, empower yourself with phrases like "I can, " "I want to," and "I choose to." A positive mindset can make all the difference in your game.
FITNESS & WELLNESS
SWEAT, SUNSHINE, AND SPRINGTIME STRENGTH
Jess Rose McDowell Director of Fitness & Wellness
As we welcome a new season and shake off the winter chill, it’s time to embrace sunshine, movement, and feeling our best. The Fitness Department is here to keep you active and energized all year long!

A great way to boost your overall health and physical performance is by strengthening your core especially your abdominal muscles. Strong abdominal muscles are essential as they play a key role in your overall health & physical performance. Here are some of the benefits:
1.
Core Stability: Your abs are part of your core, which includes your back, pelvis, and torso. A strong core improves posture, balance, and stability, making daily tasks easier and reducing injury risk.
2.
Preventing Back Pain: Strong abs support your spine and reduce strain on your lower back, helping prevent or ease back pain
Better Posture: Your abs help maintain proper posture by supporting the spine and pelvis, reducing slouching and improving alignment. 3
Enhanced Athletic Performance: A strong core boosts power, control, speed, balance, and endurance in activities like weightlifting, running, and sports. 4.
5.
Injury Prevention: Abs protect internal organs and stabilize the torso, reducing injury risk during movement.
6.
Breathing Efficiency: Strong abs aid in breath control, improving stamina for activities like running, strength training, and yoga.
Next time you ’ re in the Fitness Center or in a Group Fitness Class focus, on engaging your abdominal muscles by drawing your belly button to your spine, tilt your pelvis & always remember to breathe. Breathe in to contract (engage) your muscles, breathe out to release during each repetition

AGRONOMY & GROUNDS
SPRING FORWARD: IMPROVING GREEN CONSISTENCY ONE STEP AT A TIME
Dear Members,

Dan Stover Director of Agronomy
As we are now in the peak of our golf season, I wanted to take a moment to dive into one of the most unique challenges we face at Deering Bay not just in maintaining high-quality putting surfaces, but more importantly, in managing the proliferation of mutations that have developed here. It’s a bit science heavy and a tad in-depth, but it explains why our greens characteristics are unique to other courses.
Here on the Bay, we have several environmental stresses that accelerate the natural mutation process of putting greens. Every golf course in the world has mutations, for example Oakmont Country Club’s greens are all just one big mutation. Their greens have mutated from Poa Annua to Poa Perennial which has proven to be a highly desirable putting surface. The way they have managed their greens over decades has forced their greens to evolve to what they are today. We also have a few mutations here that may have merit as desirable future paspalum varieties, but for today we are focusing on the mutations that are not so desirable.
Over the past decades, the combination of poor water quality, shade issues, and long-term environmental stress has led to an unintended breeding ground for turf mutations. Unlike many courses where a uniform stand of paspalum can be maintained with ample sunlight and acceptable water quality, our greens have evolved into a patchwork of genetic variants, each responding differently to maintenance practices, fertility and plant growth regulators This was one of the steepest learning curves I faced when I took over in 2021, understanding why certain greens reacted opposite to others despite deploying the same exact maintenance practices. It’s common for any course to have variation, but nowhere near to the degree of Deering Bay. As an example, the greens are so different that prior to my arrival in 2016, several greens mowers were set at different heights to accommodate this Before coming here, I had never seen anything like it, but in time we figured out why such measures were taken.
Prior to installing our water treatment system last summer, our poor water quality made this course almost impossible to maintain acceptable quality. The irrigation water’s elevated pH limited uptake of nutrients and promoted disease and nematodes, allowing more resilient offtypes to take hold. Adding to this, shade exacerbates the problem by limiting photosynthesis, leading to weaker areas where mutations can establish dominance. Over time, this combination of stressors has led to the proliferation of various mutations, each with unique growth habits.
The primary issue with these mutations is their impact on playability. Each one has a different optimal growing temperature and growth rate, causing inconsistencies in green speed and smoothness. Some thrive in cooler temperatures, while others surge in warm weather. Given that we are at our busiest time of year, the recent burst of warm weather has amplified the disparity in growth rates between the parent grass and the mutations. The result is a surface that can be difficult to manage, leading to an inconsistent ball roll.
Complicating matters further is the fact that these mutations do not respond uniformly to Plant Growth Regulators (PGRs). PGRs are a critical tool in managing turf consistency, as they help regulate growth and maintain smooth putting conditions. However, when different grass types within a green react unpredictably to these applications, it becomes difficult to maintain uniform playing conditions.

The pictures above are not a disease or a pest issue but a few good examples of how we are tackling the issue. By reapplying Plant Growth Regulators at an aggressive frequency, we have found we are suppressing the mutations more effectively than our parent grass. In other words, the Sea Dwarf is growing faster than the mutations and with time these mutations will be overtaken. Before installing our water treatment system, this kind of maintenance practice would have caused injury to our greens.
By refining our management strategies and continuing to study the response, we are aiming to provide the best possible playing conditions given our older variety of paspalum, even in the face of these complex agronomic challenges. Maintaining quality greens at Deering Bay is a dynamic and ongoing process, but through diligent management and adaptation, we will continue to refine our approach.
As always, if anybody would like to discuss further, don’t hesitate to contact me at d.stover@dbycc.com.
CULINARY
SOWING SUCCESS: NURTURING GROWTH THIS SPRING
Dear Members,

Joseph AndurayExecutive Sous Chef
First, I want to express my sincere gratitude for your trust and patience toward us and the culinary team. As you all know, we are in the process of searching for an executive chef who possesses all the qualities necessary to help our team provide the exceptional service you deserve day in and day out.
Together, Kitchen Manager, Robert Comettant, and myself, are committed to always giving you the very best we can offer. We want to ensure that your dining experience is enjoyable each and every time you are with us. Additionally, I am excited to inform you that we will be introducing new dishes and flavors to the menu, crafted with the goal of enhancing every meal period at the club, breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Please feel free to share your feedback whether positive or constructive so that we can continue to improve and provide you with a service that truly reflects the high standards you deserve
Thank you once again!

Meet our Kitchen Manager, Robert! For over four years, Robert has been an invaluable part of the Deering Bay culinary team, making a lasting impact with his dedication and positivity. Working tirelessly behind the scenes, he brings a "can-do" attitude to everything he does.
Robert’s love for cooking began at a young age, inspired by his grandmother. While his roots are Peruvian, his true culinary passion lies in Asian cuisine—a craft he first honed at just sixteen during his first kitchen job at a Cantonese restaurant.
Staying true to his heritage, Robert’s favorite dish to eat is seco de res If we ’ re lucky, he might even share it with us one day!
Though members may not always see Robert, his creativity and enthusiasm truly resonates with the team. We look forward to seeing his continued success at the Club.

Kevin's Picks for the Season:

As the season begins to heat up, wine is the perfect way to unwind and enjoy the warm weather. Light, refreshing whites like Sauvignon Blanc or gavi-di-gavi are often favored for their minerality as well as their crisp acidity and fruity notes, making them ideal for sipping on a sunny afternoon. Rosé, with its bright pink hue and delicate flavor, also captures the essence of warm Florida weather, enjoyed on the golf course or paired with a light meal. Even a chilled red, like a light-bodied Pinot Noir, can bring a touch of elegance to an outdoor gathering. With the right wine, social gatherings feel more relaxed and enjoyable, creating lasting memories with friends and family. Cheers!!!

TEE UP FOR SPRING: MORE SWINGS AND SUNSHINE TO COME
Dear Members,

Craig Corcoran Director of Golf
We’ve had an excellent start to 2025! The course conditions are outstanding, and we ’ ve hosted a variety of successful events. As you may have noticed, the tee sheet is filling up quickly, especially on weekends. With that in mind, we kindly ask that all members add their playing partners' names to the tee sheet. To help people find tee times, we will be reaching out on Friday and Saturday afternoons to confirm foursomes and add “Join Me” slots for incomplete groups. If you are putting your name in the tee sheet to hold a time, we ask that you please add the other names of people you are playing with 24-48 hours in advance.
I want to take this opportunity to remind everyone that the speed slot is still in effect on Friday afternoons between 12:00pm-2:00pm and Saturday and Sunday mornings between 7:00am9:38am (just before the mid-morning block). We will continue to monitor pace and ensure that rounds played in these slots adhere to the 3 hour and 45 minute, 18-hole pace.
This will also serve as a friendly reminder that we expect all people to do their part in leaving the course in better shape than they found it. We expect footprints to be raked, divots to be filled with sand, ball marks on the green to be repaired and flattened, and range balls to remain on the driving range. With the amount of play we have been seeing lately, it is vitally important that everyone does their part to ensure we keep up course conditions.
Inside the golf shop, we will be hosting a St. Patrick’s Day Sale. This sale will run the entire month of March. It is a “Lucky 3” Sale where you can get 20% of all apparel purchases if you buy 3 or more apparel items. You won’t even have to wear green to save your green!
On the event front, our 2024-2025 season has been full of memorable tournaments. We’ve already hosted the Men’s Team Match Play Championship, UM Sylvester Cancerlink Tournament, WGA Match Play Championship, and the Women’s Member-Guest. We also have the Men’s President’s Cup tournament underway, with championship rounds fast approaching. In addition to these, we ' ve enjoyed a variety of Couples Events, Men’s Golf Association tournaments, and Interclub events. Thanks to everyone who participated – our turnout has been stronger than ever!
We just wrapped up our 2025 Men’s Member-Guest Invitational. With 72 teams, it was the largest tournament in club history. Congratulations to Alejandro Pedroza & Michael Robertson on th championship win!
