A M E S S A G E FROM THE PRESIDENT

A David Baron President

s we recover from Hurricane Irma I want to thank our staff for getting the Club and the golf course up and running as quickly as they did. This is the fourth hurricane which has hit us, going back to Hurricane Andrew. Being on the water has great advantages, but not so much when we are dealing with hurricanes. The storm surge came across the property, causing flooding issues in some of the residences and as you will see from some of the pictures in this newsletter, leaving the golf course in horrendous condition. When I first toured the course the day after the hurricane, not only was there surge debris all over the course, but part of the course was still underwater, the bunkers were totally washed out, and scores of trees were down. Initially it was hard to tell how much damage there was to the Clubhouse, but after inspections we learned there are now roof leaks, some broken windows, some water intrusion, and other unknown damages. Luckily our staff had done everything possible to secure the property before the hurricane, so the damage was less than it otherwise would have been. For those of you who have wanted to replace our paspalum greens with some type of Bermuda grass, please do not raise that issue again. The water which came across the course would have killed all of our greens and we would be closed for months as we would have had to replace all of our greens. Based on our location and proximity to the bay, we have the only type of grass that could have survived the storm surge. Over the next few months, as we play golf, we will be redoing all of our bunkers. The bunker renovation will not stop play as we will play around those areas being repaired, a couple of holes at a time. We are hopeful that all of the new bunkers will be in place by the end of the year. Our fairways and greens will be fine and the course will be in better shape than it has been in the last 10 years. Please be patient and understand that Jimmy Germana and his crew have done an amazing job in getting the course up and running as quickly as they did. As you have heard, we are assessing our members to take care of the damage caused by the hurricane. We have made a claim with our insurance company but not all of the damage is covered and there are deductibles which apply to the building damage. I do not like paying an assessment and our Board did not like the idea of assessing our members, but because of the extent of the damage, we have no alternative. Once all the repairs are made we will be in better shape than we were before the hurricane. For the good news, we have been lucky in our search for a new Executive Chef. John Gray accepted our offer and began work at the Club a few days ago. We interviewed a number of candidates and John was our first choice and brings a great deal of expertise and personality to the job. He has owned and operated restaurants, and has worked at some very high end properties. Once you have had an opportunity to taste his cuisine I am sure you will agree we made the right choice. Our staff has done an amazing job in scheduling events this season for all of our members. From family/kid friendly activities, Book Club and Lecture Series, Wine Tastings and Member Mixers, there are functions for all of our members to participate in and enjoy. Our social, tennis and golf calendars are online and provide you with tournament dates, clinics and many opportunities for playing your preferred sport and meeting other members. We have scheduled a Veteran’s Day Weekend Golf event for the entire Club on November 10-12. Participants will be split into two teams. You will have the option of playing 1, 2 or 3 days, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. We will have a modified scramble on Friday afternoon, a two man best ball event on Saturday and an individual match play on Sunday. While the event will feature lunches, drinks, hors d’oeuvres, etc., we will also be raising money for our veterans. Money raised will go towards a great veteran’s charity to honor those who have served and sacrificed for our country. It also promises to be a fun competition with the

entire Club divided into two teams and each match will count towards a running point total. Details will follow from the golf shop and emails will soon be going out with more information. Whatever your age, sex, or handicap we will try and pair you up so you will be participating in a competitive, but fun match. We are working to make Deering Bay the best Club it can be, and as always, I welcome your suggestions and ideas. If you want to reach out to me, feel free to email me at david@bhfloridalaw.com

Best regards,

David Baron President

A N O T E FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER/COO

Karen Harmon General Manager/COO

Happy Fall! I hope that everyone has enjoyed their friends and family and are settling the little ones back into school! As we continue to move forward from what was a devastating storm, I am beyond grateful to have an amazing staff that was able to come together and make sure DBYCC was up and running as quickly as possible. A special congratulations goes out to our new Manager and Employee of the Quarter: Jimmy Germana, Director of Grounds and for the second time in his career, Oscar Daza, Dining Room Captain. Both of these key players in our Club continue to surpass the expectations of many on a day-to-day basis! It was proven once again when the storm was over and both Jimmy and Oscar jumped into action to make sure the Club was ready to resume business. Jimmy exercised his leadership abilities when he decided to share this moment with his staff, saying, “There’s no way possible that I could have done it without them!” Congratulations to Jimmy and Oscar, both of whom the Club would not be the same without. With many members back in town, we understand the need to keep active, take a break from work and enjoy the time we have and live life to the fullest. To assist in your leisure time we have several events and activities lined up for your enjoyment. Here’s a sneak peak of some dates ahead (for a full list of all Club happenings please check online at www.dbycc.com): • • • • • • • •

Tuesday, October 3rd: Tuesday Night Dinner Reopens Thursday, October 5th: Pasta Night Returns Wednesday, October 11th: Candidates Interviews o Monday, October 16th: Announcement of candidate via email o Wednesday, November 8th: Candidates speeches Thursday, October 19th: WGA Opening Day Saturday, October 21st: MGA Opening Day Saturday, October 21st: Bourbon Tasting Sunday, October 22nd: Bird Walk Saturday, October 28th: Fall Festival

As noted earlier in the President’s letter, we have officially welcomed our new executive chef, John Gray. Chef John brings his years of experience and expertise in food and beverage to us and is well known for his creative cuisines from around the globe. If you haven’t been to the Club in the past few days, make sure to pass by the Dining Room to say “Hello”. Although, we have made a great addition to the team, it saddens me to announce that our Chief Engineer, Marco DiBartolomeo, will be departing us this month. Marco has decided to pursue new endeavors outside of Deering Bay, and on behalf of everyone I wish him nothing but continued success. We are ready to take on all new aspects of the Club and as always create new memories for our members and family. Always keep in mind that if there is any way I can be of assistance, please don’t hesitate to ask – my door is always open.

All the best,

Karen Harmon General Manager/COO

eptember has come and gone, so did a storm by the name of Irma. I hope that all of our members and families have safely recovered from the storm. The Club was closed for a short period of time, but we are now open! As a team and family we came together to get DBYCC up and running ASAP. We know that some members did not have electricity so we wanted to make sure that members can escape the heat, have a fabulous meal and escape reality for a while.

John Gale Director of Marketing & Membership

Now that our golf course is open please take note that we have some exiting tournaments starting in October. We have the LACOSTE Croc Open scheduled for the 14th, AON Leukemia Charity Golf tournament scheduled for the 23rd, and the President’s Challenge scheduled for the 27th & 28th of October. The Golf Pro shop also has new inventory arriving this October such as Lacoste, Maui Jim, and Golfino to name a few. So stop by the Pro Shop to see what is in store before heading out to play. I want to mention that I will be working with Bryan Rodriguez, Communication Manager to provide our members with a streamline process to obtain all monthly social events. More to come on this in the near future. I also want to remind our amazing membership that we have a referral program. Referrals are always the best source of acquiring new like-minded members. If you have ideas on a referrals system or prize please let us know. On that note, a special congratulations goes to…

STEVEN KLEIN Who is the winner of the Membership Ambassador Raffle for the Month of September. Mr. Klein, thank you for your referral. Please see me in the Membership Office to receive your prize of a Mini Brunch for two with mimosas or a Golf Foursome. Also, within the past couple of months I have had the pleasure in hosting Consul Officials (pictured below) from around the globe. In what may be a great business opportunity with the Club, I look forward to having them join the Deering Bay family as potential members.

Best regards,

John Gale Director of Marketing & Membership

Louis Latour, Puligny-Montrachet, Cote de Beaune, Cote d’Or , Burgundy, France 2013 ***** THERE ARE MANY TIMES THAT I NEED TO THINK ABOUT WHAT WINE TO PAIR WITH A DISH BUT WHEN THE DISH IS A MUSHROOM & KALE RISOTTO THE ANSWER IS ALWAYS GOING TO BE A WHITE BURGUNDY. THE LLPM JUST HAPPENS TO BE ONE OF MY FAVORITE CHARDONNAYS. THIS WINE DISPLAYS NOTES OF GRANNY SMITH APPLE, APRICOT, VANILLA AND A KISS OF OAK WITH A LINGERING FINISH. IT IS A PERFECT MATCH FOR THIS DISH.
