A M E S S A G E FROM THE PRESIDENT & THE GENERAL MANAGER
W
elcome to our second Summer Edition of On The Bay. We trust you are all making the most of a most unusual summer season.
Steven Sonenreich President
Our earlier predictions of entering the rainy season may have been a bit premature. After all the heavy rainfall in May, we saw very little rain until the third week of July. The recent rains came on the tail end of a closure week, so the impact was minimal on our ability to perform our scheduled maintenance. COVID 19 news continues to draw the most headlines, nationally and closer to home. As we know, Miami Dade is still a ‘hot spot’ and we remind everyone to remain vigilant while at the Club, and out in public, and wear your masks at all times, wash your hands frequently and most importantly maintain social distancing. The recent increase in cases has made it necessary for the Mayor to once again restrict inside dining, thus closing down our dining rooms. All other services and amenities open under the COVID guidelines remain in open and available under current guidelines. The clubhouse renovation continues to move forward commencement. We have a few minor items to respond to in regard to Since our last issue, we were approved for DERM/Pollution, which was a major hurdle. We are awaiting County approval on the three items; DERM Core – verification, fees. This was expected to be completed by the end of July. The other is Plumbing, which required additional information, and has been submitted. We are only awaiting for the County approval on the Building permit. We will then submit to the City of Coral Gables. We are finalizing that package, as a few minor items on the plans required additional comments and responses and are being addressed to be complete prior to submittal to the city. We are now targeting mid-August for commencement. Amicon, our contractor has finalized approximately 75% of their sub-contractors and are very eager to mobilize and get started. The Club is putting the final touches on the operations plan that will outline the temporary routes and location for the services we will continue to offer. All that information will be sent to the membership once finalized. On the Membership front we are holding our own with our membership counts. During this pandemic, many clubs are finding renewed interest and are growing their memberships as people are looking for a ‘safe haven’ and place to go that is safer than public places, around people you know and a staff you can trust. We have seen similar interest, and are highly focused in converting these prospects to members.

The management team is also working on the Activities Calendar for the upcoming season. We are penciling the traditional events along with some new events. Our ability to conduct them will all depend on what will be allowed to do. Being optimistic, we intend to hold them, and will just adapt to conform how we execute them to what the current requirements allow.
M E S S A G E CONTINUED
On the Food & Beverage Front, Nick and his team are continuing to work on some new and different ideas for the member to utilize the Club for their food and beverage needs. The A la Carte Sunday Brunch menu and Continental Breakfast are both available curbside. Feel free to walk up for the Continental Breakfast if you wish and use the patio dining tables to enjoy your coffee. The second Bar in a Box is coming soon. Don’t forget, our wine by the bottle sales program, allowed by the Governor during COVID, with your Curbside Take – Out is a great opportunity to utilize your F&B Minimum.
Enjoy the remainder of the summer, and we look forward to seeing you back at the Club soon.
Sincerely,
Steven Sonenreich Peter J. Serena President General Manager

A N O T E FROM GOLF
J Dave Ragan III Head Golf Professional
une and July did not disappoint – the weather was “South Florida Summer” perfect and the course was busy! We thank you for adhering to guidelines and ask that you continue to make online tee times, and practice social distancing at the practice facility, putting green and on the golf course. The health of our members and staff remains at the forefront of our efforts. Before we get too far into the summer, a friendly reminder to join in the “Hole in One” Club (at a chance for the whole kitty!) and purchase a trail fee pass (for Deering Bay residents), – call or email the Golf Shop for more information. While this has certainly been a challenging time to market, plan, and implement tournaments and events, I am proud to announce that attendance was up for the Independence Day Tournament. The tournament featured two different formats …A Red Ball and One Better-Ball of Two. Congratulations to Paul Garcia and Mario de Armas who were victorious in the Red Ball and to Howard Schwartz and Lee Holtzman who held off all challengers and prevailed in the One Better-Ball format. While many people see the summer time as a time to hang up the clubs, I see this as a season of opportunity for you. Use this time to work on your game, and introduce others to the game or the club. Quicker rounds, longer days, a nice breeze, and the opportunity to play or practice with your golf professional staff are all reasons to be sure you’re staying active on the golf course this summer. As many people take advantage of the sun staying up longer in the evenings, our range stays open longer at night for your convenience, and you can always go out for a quick nine holes at one of the best times to play. This is also a great time for beginning golfers to get out on the course, without having the stress of other golfers being around, as well as a great time to introduce your children or grandchildren into the game. By bringing them out in the evening for a few holes, or just to hit balls on the range, you will be introducing them to a game that they will be able to play for a lifetime. I want to extend thanks to the entire Membership for their incredible patience and support as we adjust to working with new policies in this new lifestyle we are all adapting to. We miss handshakes. We miss smiles without masks. We miss bustling weekends, Junior Camps and golf activities. Mostly, we’re happy we get to make this crazy time a little easier for you as your patience and support is making it easier for us. TIP OF THE MONTH ROUGH TACTICS HITTING irons shots from our summer Paspalum rough requires a small, yet significant, change in tactics. I have found that the key to good iron play out of the rough comes from opening the clubface slightly when addressing the
AUG|SEP 2020 • 8
ball. The reason for this is that the clubhead will turn in slightly as it cuts through the heavy grass on the downswing. By the time impact has been made, the clubhead will have turned back to a normal square face and the shot will sail out of the rough on a straight path. If you address the ball with a square club face, the grass will twist the clubhead on the downswing and the face will close at impact, causing a pulled shot. When addressing the ball, be sure not to sole the club. Let the sole of the club rest about an inch behind the ball, barely touching the top of the grass. By not soling it, you eliminate the possibility of catching heavy grass as the clubhead is taken back. Take a full swing when playing this shot rather than a punch shot. And be careful in your selection of a club. This shot will usually “fly” with less spin and fun more than the ordinary shot when it hits the ground. Therefore, if there’s no wind, take one club less than you’d normally take to cover the distance. If the wind is against you, take the same club you’d use under normal conditions. If the wind is with you, it might be best to take two clubs less than you’d normally use.
Best regards, Dave Ragan Head Golf Professional

e would like to wish everyone a safe summer. It is a little quiet here at the club, however we will continue with our summer clinics and private lessons for all those who would like to join us.
Pedro Leon Tennis Director
The Ladies Clinics are on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We start at 9:30 and end at 11 am, also on Wednesdays and Fridays from 11 to 12pm we offer Junior’s Clinics. We know that the summers are hot, but we must continue to brush up on our skills. Please call the Tennis Shop and let us know when you would like to attend. One of our priorities is to keep the courts in the best conditions to make the members proud. That is why you will see us depositing clay to maintain them as the best courts in the area. Most important of all, we would like to remind everyone to wear the proper attire and tennis shoes, and also that reservation should be made no earlier than two days in advance. Please keep a look out for flyers with dates and times of future events, or contact the Tennis Shop for further details or questions. We would like to wish everyone a happy summer season and we look forward to seeing new and familiar faces.
Sincerely, The Tennis Family

A M E S S A G E FROM THE F&B DIRECTOR
I
have been fortunate enough these past few weeks in getting to meet some of you in the dining rooms, golf terrace, 19th Hole, and around the Clubhouse. Despite just recently having to close our dining room for dinein service, I am hopeful that I will eventually be able to meet all of you in the coming months, in person, and under better circumstances.
Nicholas Perusina Food & Beverage Director
We have had some great feedback from our Sunday A la Carte Brunch menu that we began several weeks back. This will still be available for Curbside Pickup on Sundays 11:00AM – 3:00PM along with our normal lunch menu. On July 7th we rolled out our Drive-Thru Continental Breakfast which I know several of you have already been enjoying. Members are able to drive up the valet ramp to place their order with our breakfast attendant who will place their order in a takeaway bag. As this service was designed for members to enjoy in the lounge with their fellow members, we again ask that you continue to only order items for your personal consumption. Seating is also available in the courtyard for those wishing to utilize that outside space. The complimentary items that we have available are coffee, orange juice, bagels & cream cheese, assorted muffins, banana bread, and whole fruit. This will be 7:00AM – 11:00AM Tuesday - Sunday. Also available for curbside pickups with your lunch or dinner order, are up to any 6 bottles of wine for purchase that we currently have in stock. This is a great opportunity to help reach your F&B minimum. Even though bars are still closed, we had a great success in our Bar In A Box promotion where we bring the bar experience into your home by pairing gourmet nut mix, an appetizer, and the ingredients for a craft cocktail, all in one package. It’s a fun activity where I record myself demonstrating to you how to make the cocktail. You then get to enjoy the appetizer and nut mix just like if you were at your favorite bar. We will continue creating new and exciting ‘Bar In A Box’ packages every month! Our plan to have tastings and Pasta Night starting in July was put on hold by the Mayor’s Executive Order to close dine-in service. Once these restrictions are lifted, we look forward to hosting these events for our members. More news on that as soon as it becomes available.
Cheers! Nick Perusina Director of Food & Beverage
