A M E S S A G E FROM THE PRESIDENT & THE GENERAL MANAGER
H
appy Holidays to all,
Steven Sonenreich President
As you read this year’s last newsletter one cannot help but reflect on what type of year 2020 has been for the world, the nation, the state of Florida and for Deering Bay. It is doubtful that very many of us could have foreseen that the outbreak of COVID 19 in China would create the global impact it has. As nations dealt with the growing concerns and devastation of lives it continued to get closer and closer to home to us here at Deering Bay. As states and cities shut down, the Club followed the Executive Orders and CDC protocols to do our part to keep our members and employees as safe as possible. Thus far, we have weathered the impact here better than most thanks to the steps taken and everyone’s cooperation and understanding on what it takes, and will continue to take, to keep COVID 19 at bay. For that, we thank you, and ask for everyone to observe the guidelines we have in place at the Club, particularly as we head into the holiday season when we are so accustomed to being in close proximity with friends and family who have traveled here, or where you have traveled to, and risk exposure and transfer of this virus through these close contact. We also are most hopeful that the end of the year signals the end of the unusual rain patterns that have plagued most of Florida in October and November. Jimmy Germana and his team feel a bit waterlogged at this point as we are more than 20” above average in recent weeks has saturated the course. Our golfers are certainly aware of this as the course has been closed or Cart Path Only much more than normal for this time of year. Hang in there Jimmy! This year also saw the commencement of our clubhouse renovation project. After an arduous permitting process we finally passed all the requirements and celebrated our groundbreaking on October 14th and began work in earnest on October 12th. Origin Construction has been making great progress and we will continue to share updates with the membership throughout the project to keep you all apprised of the progress and what is going on behind the scenes. Financially the Club has performed above expectations. There was a tremendous amount of concern on what the impact of COVID and the closing of the Club would have on our financial performance. We are happy to report that we are currently in a much better position than our original budget and reforecast predicted. As you already know, these results will not result in a special assessment of the membership in 2021 for the 2020 operating year. Continuing with positive news, we have seen steady growth in membership since our lowest point in July. Shannon Mattes, our Director of Membership & Marketing has stepped in with a strong background, fresh ideas and a positive approach to growing our membership base. The coronavirus has created demand for the comfort and safe haven a club can provide and she is leveraging the renovation and other positive aspects of our Club to take advantage of this

Food and Beverage has been seeing steady increases in dining, both at the Club and through our Curbside take out operation. On a recent Friday night, we had 82 Curbside orders alone in addition to our members dining inside or in the courtyard! A new menu, the return of the Sunday Pop Up Grill, Seafood Night and Steak Night with Chef Jon’s new and refreshing offerings are helping to reenergize the dining experience at the Club.
Peter Serena General Manager
December is supposed to be a joyous month with holidays celebrated by many faiths throughout the month and culminating with New Year’s Eve, where we usher out the old year and welcome the new one. 2020 will certainly be remembered for many things and the general feeling is we all want to put it behind us as quickly as possible. That is understandable, and as we welcome 2021 we want to wish you all a Happy Holiday Season and healthy and prosperous New Year!
Sincerely, Steven Sonenreich Peter J. Serena President General Manager

oon we will be officially saying goodbye to 2020 and hopefully the rain as well, the most we have seen in a very long time! I’d like to extend a big thank you to Jimmy Germana, Director of Grounds, and his staff for keeping us afloat, literally. It has not been easy and we appreciate you for working as hard as you do to keep us at the top of our game.
Shannon Mattes Director of Membership & Mktg
It has been such a pleasure meeting so many members and prospects! We continue to welcome new faces to the Club who are looking for a safe and secure environment to spend time with their family and friends. Many prospects and new members we meet have just relocated to the area and are excited to meet new friends and become involved with the many activities and programs we offer. In 2021, we will be launching a new DBYCC Ambassador Program to ensure new members are integrated seamlessly into the DBYCC lifestyle. Please keep a look out for more information on the program and how you can get involved. The Amenity Improvement Project has caught the attention of many prospects who are excited to become a part of DBYCC’s exciting future. As we move into the New Year, Daniella and I have some great marketing and member initiatives planned to promote the new Deering Bay Yacht & Country Club. We look forward to meeting your referrals and showing them all the ways Deering Bay is reimagining club life.
Please congratulate...
JEFFREY RUBINSTEIN who is the winner of the “Membership Ambassador Raffle” for the Month of DECEMBER. Mr. Rubinstein, thank you for your referral. s we As we move closer to ending the year, and look forward to a healthy and prosperous 2021, the Food & Beverage team is excited to see many of our members and guests during the holidays. Albeit a little different this year, and perhaps even “curbside only”, we are doing everything we can to keep each other and all of you socially distanced and safe around the Club.
Nicholas Perusina Food & Beverage Director
We will be celebrating Hanukkah on December 10th from 5:30PM – 8:30PM with an a la carte, Hanukkah themed menu, featuring a selection of specialty latkes and holiday classics. In addition to our Hanukkah menu, we will also be offering our full dinner menu as well. On Sunday, December 13th we will be turning our front drive into a drivethru gingerbread house where Santa will make a special appearance from 2PM – 4PM. Members and their families will have the opportunity to drive up the front ramp and spend a few minutes with Santa (socially distanced) and even take a picture with him. Please call ahead to make a reservation with how many in your party will be driving by to meet Santa and receive some special treats. On Sunday, December 20th we will be hosting a Holiday Brunch from 11AM – 3PM with an a la carte brunch menu featuring many different items for all appetites such as Nutella Stuffed French Toast, Smoked Salmon Platter and Shrimp & Grits, just to name a few. As always, reservations should be made by contacting our hostess by phone or email. To end the year, we will be offering a pre-fixe New Year’s Eve menu from 6PM – 9PM on December 31st, 2020 with live entertainment, and a robust menu with unlimited champagne. While we are foregoing the traditional countdown and party afterwards, we want our members and their guests to be able to plan something safe and special while socially distanced wherever they choose. As we have the past seven months, we will make Curbside available featuring our special New Year’s Eve menu for members preferring to celebrate the occasion with dinner in their own home. New Year’s Eve Curbside preorders must be received by 5:00 pm on December 29th. Our entire Food & Beverage team, from the back of the house to the front of the house, has all worked tirelessly to adapt and improvise to the challenging conditions in regard to COVID restrictions, seating capacities and safety protocols for a majority of this year. I wanted to make sure that every member knows how much we appreciate their continued support of our Food & Beverage programs. If there is anything we can do to make your dining experience more enjoyable please reach out to me directly so that I may try to accommodate your suggestions or concerns. We are committed to elevating your dining experiences throughout this pandemic, this renovation, and the future of Deering Bay. Cheers! Nick Perusina Director of Food & Beverage

Baron and Nuell took the lead after day 1 with (42) points battling high winds while displaying clutch putting and timely teamwork to seal the victory. In the runner-up position with (41) points was Richard Pollack and Rudy Stern. Baron and Nuell were declared the winners after heavy rain cancelled the final round. Congratulations to David Baron and Stephen Nuell the 2020 Men’s Member-Member Champions! Finally, as we head into the holiday season, I hope that – despite an incredibly forgettable year – we remember (1) that we have so much to be thankful for and (2) that there is much we can do to help those who are less fortunate than we. I James “Jimmy” Germana Director of Grounds
hope everyone is doing well and staying safe. We have had a challenging start of our season out here on the golf course. September we received 9.5 inches of rain, October we saw 12 inches fall and we are already at 6.5 inches in the first 12 days of November. As well as strong King Tides, to say the golf course is wet is an understatement. We are doing the best we can to get the water off the course as fast as possible. Even though there is no standing water on the course, it is still very saturated because of the King Tides. When we have these tides it raises the water table which in turn does not allow the course to dry out as fast as we would like. Besides the rain and tides causing the course to be extremely wet, it has also put us behind in completing our normal season preparation. This includes weed management, bunker touch up, pine straw application, and various other detail work. Due to the wetness, we are 6 weeks behind in applying our pre-emergent herbicide. This is an essential application because it helps prevent new weeds from emerging as well as eliminating others. The hope is to get this application out Monday, November 16 and to keep spraying and pulling existing weeds on the golf course. As of today, we have been able to redistribute and add sand to all the green side bunkers, and should complete the fairway ones by the end of next week. The pine straw was installed on November 2, but due to the rain event on the 8th there are areas that need to be touched up once again. The hope is that the rain will subside soon and we can get back to presenting a great golf course for all of you. The rain has also taken a toll on the newly planted annual flowers around the clubhouse. We will have these flowers replanted on November 19, baring any big rain storm. As always feel free to contact me anytime with any questions you might have at j.germana@dbycc.com and always remember to fix your ball marks and fill your divots.
Sincerely, Jimmy Germana Director of Grounds
