A M E S S A G E FROM THE PRESIDENT
A
s you are aware, Peter Serena joined us as our general manager on January 6 and is off to an excellent start. I trust that many of you have already met Peter and have seen the professional presence that he has. Having the opportunity to work closely with Peter over these last few weeks I could assure you that his competency to manage our Club is clearly evident. I have asked Peter to create a list of the top twenty priorities that he believes management should address over the course of this year. Our Board will be reviewing those priorities with Peter in a forthcoming meeting to develop consensus around Peter’s recommendations. Of course priority number one for leadership is the successful renovation of our Club.
Steven Sonenreich There has been speculation about the start of the renovations, and that is not surprising President given the delays that we have had. We now expect construction to begin in late April. Let there be no question that this project will be moving forward. The complexity of these plans, the amount of deferred capital and maintenance, the permitting process, and obviously the commitment to get this done properly is paramount to the Club’s future success. I like to say that when you have the luxury of time, use it. As much as we all want to see this renovation expedited, the goal is to get it done correctly and to minimize disruption. Many of you will recall the failing of the 19th hole when process was not respected. That will not be the case with this project. The 2020 Board met for the first time on January 23. The Board reviewed committee appointments and I want to thank those members that have agreed to participate in our committee process. The Board reviewed the Club’s unaudited financial results. Financially, the Club is essentially at a breakeven for 2019 which is a fairly good result given management changes and a credit to actions taken by the Board and interim management to execute on a revised budget. The Board also heard an update on our construction project planning process and Peter’s report on his first few weeks’ activities and observations. Our new Executive Chef Roger Hopkins has been with us since the beginning of the year and I have heard very good feedback on his creativity and food quality. We are hopeful to have a new food and beverage director recruited in the next two weeks to round out our management team. With high quality management, our incomparable property, a successful renovation, we can be confident about the future of our country club. Thank you for supporting Deering Bay Yacht and Country Club.
Sincerely,
Steven Sonenreich President

A N O T E FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER
W
hat an exciting first month it has been for me here at Deering Bay Yacht & Country Club! I have had a few weeks to settle in and find myself fortunate to be able to work side by side with a dedicated core of associates. The team is very committed to your member satisfaction and willing to embrace the vision and changes ahead and I look forward to a successful future.
Peter Serena General Manager
Being in high season brings more activity, and we have seen an uptick in usage of the club. Friday afternoons on the golf course, hosting the Men’s Interclub, Sunday Brunch, attendance at the Member Mixer, members taking group exercise classes and tennis clinics, all seem to be busier each week. The recent sell out of Comedy Night is encouraging as we learn what events our members prefer. It is truly a healthy sign to see the ongoing support of the members. My primary focus is on the upcoming renovation, and making sure we are doing everything to move this process along. The deeper we get into it, the finer the details become and the greater the scrutiny, to ensure we are fully compliant with our plans to the City, and in what we will be doing here at the club for our members during the renovation. One of my goals, and that of the Board, is to continue to provide you with as many of our club amenities as possible on a daily basis. There may be some changes to routines, locations and hours of various operations, but we want you all to be able to enjoy as much of the club as you can in an unimpeded way. I will speak more to that in the coming months. We have a wonderful golf course here at Deering Bay. Superintendent Jimmy Germana and his crew, and Dave Ragan and the golf team are working together to provide our golf members and their guests with a tremendous experience. The word must be out on the street, as I have noticed we are starting to see more Troon Prive’ rounds being played here at the club. The Prive’ Privileges are a great benefit you have as a member, and I encourage you to take advantage of them yourselves at a number of Troon’s clubs when you travel, in or out of state. Naples, Lake Worth and Palm Beach Gardens have some great courses that are all within a day’s driving distance. Check your Troon directory for others in areas where you may be traveling, as you will find the Prive’ rates to be very attractive. If you happen to watch golf on TV, you may be pleased to know that Troon manages the golf operation at Kapalua, Maui, where they just completed the Tournament of Champions. The newly renovated course has never looked better. Thank you to those that volunteered to serve on our various committees this year. Giving of your time to assist with the governance and improvement of the club is commendable, and I thank you and look forward to working with you all. Circling back to the team we have here at Deering Bay. I would be remiss if I didn’t recognize Carmen Fadraga, in accounting, who is celebrating 25 years and Erik Ruiz, our Engineering Manager has been here for 14 years. They are just two pillars of the team who continue to make this such a special place. I look forward to continuing to meet and get to know more of you.
Sincerely, Peter Serena General Manager

THE FUTURE OF DEERING BAY In spring of 2020, Deering Bay is embarking on a renovation project that will elevate the Club to an exciting and spontaneous atmosphere. The plan will not only improve your member experience, it will create an environment that continues to make Deering Bay the place where friends meet on the course as well as beyond. Working with an excellent team of architects and interior designers, the new amenities at Deering Bay will provide an ultimate setting for members to enjoy their Club. In addition to expanding the Bar/Lounge area, a new outdoor 19-Hole Bar/Grill and Kids Center will be included to the Clubhouse. A highly anticipated piece of this renovation will be the new Fitness Center, with stunning views of the golf course, new state-of-the-art equipment and a comprehensive schedule of wellness programs for every level.
A N O T E FROM GOLF
Men’s Team Match Play Championship Ten teams set out during Saturday’s stroke-play seeding round to battle for the top– eight spots in the Championship and play for the title. David Baron and Stuart Bornstein tied for the stroke-play medalists with a 5 under-par with a 66. The Baron/Bornstein team captured the first seed in tie breakers over Carlos Casuso/Larry Woerner and Lee Holtzman/Howard Schwartz.
Dave Ragan III Head Golf Professional
On Sunday morning, eighth seed Scott Feder and Don Elliott defeated Baron/Bornstein, in the round of 8, before going on to be defeated in their semifinal match on Sunday against Joel Barnett and Andy Gross, the fourth seed. The third and fourth seed teams both were victorious in the Round of 8, with Lee Holtzman and Howard Schwartz defeated Leo Chomiak and Darin Dibello, the sixth seed, while Carlos Casuso and Larry Woerner prevailed over Opi Moreira and Jose Bengoechea, in the round of 8 and ousted Holtzman/Schwartz in the semifinal. After a back and forth championship match, Casuso/Woerner prevailed 1 up to secure their first Men’s Team Match Play Championship.
Tournament Tee Update Typically, the men’s Deering Bay golf tournaments are played from the blue tee markers. Exceptions have been made to level the playing field which allows members to compete in tournaments on an equitable level combining age and handicap. In order to participate in a tournament from a tee marker other than the designated tee, the Rules of 80, 85 and 100 have been created.
RULE OF 80: (Blue/White Tee Markers) Age plus handicap must equal 80 or over, and 80% of rounds entered in the USGA GHIN Handicap System from the Blue/White Tee Markers.
RULE OF 85: (White Tee Markers) Age plus handicap must equal 85 or over, and 80% of rounds entered in the USGA GHIN Handicap System from the White Tee Markers.
RULE of 100: (Green Tee Markers) Age plus handicap must equal 100 or over, and 80% of rounds entered in the USGA GHIN Handicap System from the Green Tee Markers.
GREAT SHOT…Congratulations to Carlos Casuso for making the first hole-in-one of the decade at Deering Bay. The spectacular shot was on #5, Saturday, January 25. The historic ace was witnessed by Gary Lubel, Larry Woerner and Bruce Lamchick.
Golf Tip of the Month “No pretty women can miss a single shot without a man giving her some poor advice. A husband should never try to teach his wife to play golf or drive a car. A wife should never try to teach her husband to play bridge.” -Harvey Penick Little Red Book

GREENS R E P O R T
I
hope everyone has been enjoying the season thus far. We had an unusual pattern of weather to close out 2019 and to start the new year. In the month of December, we recorded just over 8 inches of rain here on the golf course, and just over 70 inches for the year. Not only was it wet, but it was also cloudy for most of the month, with 14 of the 31 days in December not seeing the sun come out. These are extremely high records when our average rainfall for the month of December is anywhere from 0.7 to 1 inch, and yearly totals are right around 55 inches. Overall, the course has held up well under these conditions, but we are seeing an adverse effect from the wet and cloudy days on some of the greens. Greens 1, 2, 12, 13 and 17 all have algae on them, some being worse than James “Jimmy” Germana others. Also contributing to the formation of the algae is the shade from the mangroves, Director of Grounds trees and buildings. We are doing everything that we can to eradicate it as quickly as possible. We have been spraying, scraping and sanding these areas more often than the rest of the greens in order to get them cleaned up as soon as possible. If you see areas with extra white sand on them, this is the reason. These areas should not affect the ball roll as the majority of the areas are on the edges of the greens. I know that a lot of you have been wondering what is happening with the turf on the blue tee of #11 and red tee of #12. We were trying a variety of Zoysia grass called Zeon, and it has not worked out as we had planned. This turf was an experiment to see if it would hold up to the conditions here at Deering to then plan on using it on the entire course if we saw good results. One of the main reasons that we tried this turf was because you are able to spray out Bermuda grass if it gets contaminated without any damage to the Zoysia. Being that we have a lot of Bermuda grass contamination on the golf course, I anticipated that this would be the perfect turf for us. Unfortunately, this was not the case, and we will be removing it as soon as we are able to get Paspalum again. As always, feel free to contact me anytime with any questions you might have at j.germana@dbycc.com, and always remember to fix your ball marks and fill your divots.
Sincerely, Jimmy Germana Director of Grounds

A N O T E FROM TENNIS
W Pedro Leon Tennis Director
e are just two months into season and already have made significant accomplishments. On the domestic scene we are making our DBYCC tennis teams presence felt! The USTA Ladies and SFWDL teams have been giving it their best on the courts this season. But they are not the only ones supporting the tennis program. We were able to successfully host the Welcome to the New Year’s round robin & barbecue event and started our Saturday mornings with the new Work Out Clinic followed by a complimentary Weekend Clinic, with great feedback from our members. Please see our calendar of events to be advised of our new schedule for February and March. We are now looking forward to our upcoming events. In February all clinics, USTA and SFWDL matches will continue as scheduled. On the 13th we are hosting the Valentine’s Doubles & Mixed Doubles special event where our members will have a night of tennis, food, love and more. As always we would like to see everyone out on the courts. The success of all our events is simply because of the great people participating in them. This month we are sure it will not be any different, so come and enjoy the game. In our effort to continue offering our members the best tennis courts in town, we will continue to apply clay on them to keep them groomed for optimum conditions. We thank everyone for your patience and understanding as our maintenance crew works diligently to restore the courts to the level of excellence you are use to. Most important of all, we would like to remind everyone to wear the proper attire and tennis shoes, also that reservations should be made no earlier than two days in advance.
Sincerely, Pedro Leon Director of Tennis
