A M E S S A G E FROM THE PRESIDENT
A
happy and healthy 2020 to you and your families. We are excited about the future of our Country Club and our transformational positioning during the coming year.
The Board has elected Rob Sperber, Domingo Moreira, and Gary Alvo respectively as Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary to assist me as your President.
Steven Sonenreich President
The Board also designated Rob Sperber and Larry Woerner as the Club’s representatives to the Deering Bay Master Property Owners Association. We are interested in having a more deliberate interaction with the MPOA as our Club transforms and sales of homes continues at a robust pace. Last year there were over twenty home sales at Deering Bay which has translated into membership opportunities for the Club. As I have previously reported both in this newsletter and during open forums the task of getting our construction project properly permitted has been difficult as expected. We are now expecting permitting to be resolved during the first quarter and construction beginning in April. The Board also approved a 3% convenience fee to be paid when credit cards are used by members and guests. There will be detailed explanation and notification of this in separate communications from our management team, but I wanted you to know that the annual cost associated with credit card usage has been in excess of $80,000 and an unnecessary burden to the Club. Last but truly first, is welcoming our new General Manager Peter Serena who we are confident will be very successful and be with us for many years to come. Peter has the opportunity to select his own food and beverage manager and was involved in the selection of our new chef. This team along with the many fine people that we have at Deering will be instrumental in taking our Club to the next level. Please join me in welcoming Peter. We have had a lively year of debate and criticism which I have accepted as positive and constructive. With that being said, I trust that you will agree that the interim management put in place and led by Jerome Louie has been excellent. The new management also identified by Troon you will find to be superb as well. Last month we added one full golf member and seven preview members which I truly believe is a harbinger of a club whose best days are in front of it. Happy New Year.
Sincerely,
Steven Sonenreich President

A N O T E FROM THE INTERIM GENERAL MANAGER
W Jerome Louie Interim General Manager
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
hile my time at Deering Bay has been short, it has been very rewarding. You have a great membership, a great club, and a Board that is working hard to take it to the next level – please recognize this and thank them for giving up their time for you. You have a wonderful staff that has been here for years, seeing your families grow and becoming a part of your family. During this time, I saw part of this family, Max Miranda, move away. As a member said, “there may be an empty spot, but my memories of Deering Bay will always include Max. New opportunities for him and new opportunities for our club.” 2020 will be an exciting time for Deering Bay. A new, well-seasoned General Manager and Executive Chef, new clubhouse construction attracting new members and three new members on the Board of Directors. Members of Deering Bay – please take the time to thank your Board and give them the recognition and respect they deserve. The Club’s best interest is in their heart, and their decisions are made for the betterment of your Club. In my first newsletter (November), I told you that as an Interim General Manager, I hoped to make a difference at your club. I believe I have, along with the help and support of the entire team. I especially want to thank my interim team: Chef Patrick Aftanas (Sheridan, WY), Director of Food and Beverage, Stephen Plunkett (Scottsdale, AZ), Chef de Cuisine, Luke Cherry (Greenville, DE) and Interim Chef William Quigley (Tallahasse, FL). It’s not always easy to be away from friends and family, especially for extended periods of time and over the holidays, but they are a dedicated and professional team. I leave you in good hands with Peter Serena taking over the helm. Peter comes from BallenIsles in Palm Beach Gardens. Having previously worked at BallenIsles, I checked my sources (members, managers and associates), they tell me that Peter is a strong leader, a planner who is very visible and has earned the respect of all those who have come in contact with him. Invite and encourage your friends and families to become a part of Deering Bay Yacht & Country Club. When you surround yourself with friends and family, life is so much better, the Club is much more vibrant. DBYCC is a hidden jewel. When Club renovations have been completed, we will see an upturn in membership growth. Now is the perfect time for your friends to take advantage of the Pre-construction Membership Program. Please contact our Director of Membership, John Gale (j.gale@dbycc.com) for details. Be respectful of fellow members, the Club and the staff. As the season progresses, don’t forget what makes your Club special. • •
Protect and care for your golf course – replace your divots and repair your ball marks (and at least two others), pick up your tees. Display proper decorum in the dining facilities. Appropriate attire and phone etiquette only further enhances our Country Club. Please call in advance for dining reservations – we can serve your better.
In parting, I wish you all the best for 2020. If your travels ever bring you through northern Delaware, please plan to make a stop and visit/play at Fieldstone Golf Club.
Sincerely, Jerome Louie Interim GM

A N O T E FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER
H
appy New Year to everyone here at Deering Bay Yacht and Country Club! This may be my most succinct letter to the members, as I am drafting from my computer at BallenIsles, in advance of my joining the team at Deering Bay in the very near future. That being said, I will use it more of an introduction than a medium for upcoming activities at the club.
Peter Serena General Manager
I am honored to have been selected to be your new General Manager. I consider it great timing to be here at the start of the new year. It is a new beginning for my wife and I, moving to Miami, (with our two dogs) and starting out in a new club as the next step in my career. Our adult son is living just north of us in the Ft. Lauderdale area, so I am sure we will still be able to see him often. Most importantly, it is such an exciting time to be a member of Deering Bay as there are so many new things going on. I would imagine that all of you are as excited about the upcoming renovation as I am. I have seen the plans and am just beginning to dig in with the Board of Directors, the architect and Troon on the specifics, but the upgrades will definitely provide the members with new amenities and needed improvements. Staying with the construction theme, we are ‘building’ our Food and Beverage Team as well. The first piece was adding our new Executive Chef, Roger Hopkins. Roger joined us just in time for New Year’s Eve and is ready to hit the ground running. Roger is a Certified Executive Chef and Certified Food and Beverage Executive. He has a wealth of experience in the culinary arena, most notably where he was the Executive Chef at Quail Ridge Country Club in Boynton Beach for eleven years. His time there has prepared him well to understand all aspects of club dining. One of Roger’s first goals will be to hire a Sous Chef, that will assist him in all aspects of managing the kitchen operation. The next part of the foundation in Food and Beverage will be to hire a Food and Beverage Director. The search for this key position has been a focus of Jerome and the Troon F&B team and I am hopeful that by the time you are reading this that we have finalized our search and selected a great individual who will lead the F&B operation through the renovation, new opening, and beyond. As the 2020 Season gets into full swing, the team has been gearing up and is prepared to serve you in all areas of the club. I am getting up to speed on everything that is planned, and will be supporting the team in any way possible. I know Dave Ragan is already working on the Men’s Member-Guest to be sure that we have another fantastic event all the participants will be proud of and Jimmy Germana will continue to make the golf course the centerpiece of this beautiful club. I want to personally thank Jerome Louie for being your General Manager while the search for a full time GM was being conducted. Having just fulfilled a similar role this past summer in NY, I am familiar with the sacrifices made to your family, the hours/effort put in managing Deering Bay as well as remotely running his home club in Delaware. I have heard nothing but great things about what Mr. Louie has done as the steward of your club and has left me in a great place to pick up the torch. Being visible and accessible to the membership is something I pride myself on, and I am really looking forward to getting to know all of you and hearing what you have to say about your club. As I develop my relationship with Mr. Sonenreich and the Board of Directors, we will establish a clear vision for the club and a game plan for the management team to execute for improvement in all areas. I will do my best to get up to speed as quickly as possible in order to lead the club through high season and the addition of key staff, and the start of the renovation.
See you at the club, Peter Serena General Manager

Welcome Our New Chef! Roger Hopkins I started my career working with both my grandfathers, learning how to bake and butcher. Early work experiences included the Wine Cellar Restaurant (Reddington Beach, FL) one of the premier restaurant companies on the west coast of Florida, and Marriott Casa Marina. I staged in England to hone my skills at various restaurants and hotels. I followed my dream of working in the Caribbean with Elite Island Resorts and continued my path in the food and beverage industry. From 2001 through 2006, I served as the Director of Food and Beverage Operations and Executive Chef at The Colony Beach and Tennis Resort. The Colony is a 5 Star, 5 Diamond, with 6 Florida Trend Golden Spoon Awards and received the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence 35 years in a row. .In 2006, I joined Quail Ridge Country Club (Boynton Beach) as Executive Chef, through 2017. Coming to Deering Bay Yacht and Country Club, I bring my own unique style of culinary expertise to the industry - creating unforgettable dining experiences, drawing influence from the culinary landscape of many regions of the world. One of his main focuses in the industry is being open / listening to my members and building strong loyal teams of professionals to provide outstanding service and food every dining experience. A N O T E FROM GOLF
O
n behalf of the Golf Staff I want to wish all our members and their families a Happy and Healthy New Year. As we reflect on the events of last year at Deering Bay Yacht & Country Club we are proud of our accomplishments. An increasing tournament base of both new and old members have played an active role in supporting our tournaments through ’19 and a golf course that is simply a utopia for our members and guests to enjoy thanks to Jimmy Germana and staff. We will continue to set high goals and expectations for the New Year in order to continue to make your club better.
Dave Ragan III Head Golf Professional
January’s golf calendar is a busy one, please check out all the events for January and make sure you mark all the activities on your schedule. In this busy season of golf tournaments, on the horizon is the ever popular Men’s Member-Guest in February. The Member-Guest has a limited field of teams and is filling up quickly. Also in February is the Annual Barbara Gelber Memorial Tournament benefitting UM Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center through Cancer Link. Sign up today for these fantastic events! With the end of a year comes a new beginning. The thought of a New Year for me brings hopes of positive change for your golf game. During the winter is the ideal time to work on your golf and select an area of improvement with our excellent teaching staff led by John Pallot. Also during the winter season, it is a good idea, to take a look at your equipment. Are your grips still in a good condition, or are your wedges still sharp? These are all little things which may have a negative influence on your game if they are not in the right shape. Stop by the golf shop and we can have a look through your bag and see if any changes have to be made. In January 2020, the new Rules of Handicapping is set to debut. The World Handicap System will allow golfers to play on an equitable and fair basis around the globe. This new system will include a number of new concepts and terms for golfer around the world to learn. Here are five things to know. The World Handicap System is set to debut in January 2020 and will allow golfers to play on an equitable and fair basis around the globe. This new system will include a number of new concepts and terms for golfers around the world to learn. Your Handicap Index may change Your number will be based off your 8 best scores out of the past 20. In most cases for Deering golfers, it will change less than one stroke. Net Double Bogey The maximum hole score for each player will be limited to a Net Double Bogey. Par + 2 + any handicap strokes you receive. Your Handicap Index will be revised daily Your Handicap Index will update the day after you post a score. On the days where you don’t submit a score, no update will take place. Your Course Handicap will change Slope Rating and now Course Rating and Par will be used to determine your course handicap, allowing you to play from different sets of tees without adjustment. Safeguards in the new system The system will account for abnormal playing conditions, limit extreme upward movement of a Handicap Index, and reduce a Handicap Index when an exceptional score is posted.
