A M E S S A G E FROM THE PRESIDENT & THE GENERAL MANAGER

T Steven Sonenreich President

he rainy season appears to have started early this year! The last week of May inundated the Club, our golf course and tennis courts. In a span of three days we received close to 12” of rain. The on course conditions have been steadily improving and we expect to be fully operational by the time you read this, pending no further heavy rains. The extensive rains, and days without sun, have flushed nutrients from the soil and weakened our turf, making it susceptible to weeds and algae. The bunkers were heavily contaminated and we are in the process of addressing that. All correctable, but Jimmy and his crew need some time to get to it all, and will have the course looking great again shortly. It also impacted our Food and Beverage operation, between the rains and loss of power. All of this is behind us, and the club is ready for all to enjoy, in our dining room, golf course and on our tennis courts. Please be sure to join us in the Club for our new Summer Menu that is coming soon! The summer of 2020 is shaping up to be one that will be remembered for many reasons. Normally, it is a time that we look forward to for the end of the school year, planning vacations to fun and exotic places, and a time to get together with friends and family at the beach or for backyard barbecues. In the Summer of COVID 19 a lot of that has changed. The homeschooling that was initiated in March will end soon, but we are sure beyond that, everyone’s plans are in a state of flux. Our recent survey of Summer Plans clearly told us that most members are going to travel this summer later than normal and for a shorter period of time. As your plans are being made, please know that the Club will be here and will be looking forward to providing you with as many of the regular amenities you have come to enjoy as possible. The Club is eagerly awaiting the ongoing lifting of COVID 19 restrictions and moving on to Phase 2, and hopefully Phase 3 soon after. Many of you are looking forward to resuming your normal workout routine at the Fitness Center or swimming laps in the pool. Om the meantime, remember the dining room is open, and curbside takeout is still an option. As restrictions are lifted, we will schedule our Member Forum, as soon as gatherings are allowed. In recent weeks, members have inquired on what the Club is doing about the Food & Beverage Minimum and other fees due to the closure. The Board is aware of this, and it has been discussed at each of the recent Board Meetings. The Board has decided not to act on this currently, and will review it again at the end of the summer. That will give us time to see where the Club stands financially as we begin to realize the full impact of COVID 19. In addition to all that is already going on, we must now remember to prepare

Something new this year, this is the first of two summer editions of On The Bay. Beginning this year we will publish a June/July edition and an August/ September edition. We will continue to update the membership on any news that didn’t make the newsletter via our regular eblasts and flyers around the Club. We will resume our monthly newsletter in the fall as we begin to gear up for season.

Peter Serena General Manager

On the renovation front, we are getting closer to obtaining our permits and really expect to see them issued sometime in June. As we went to print, the DERM/Pollution piece from the county was the only remaining approval needed. Once we have that, the City of Coral Gables should be able to review our submission fairly quickly. The contractor recently supplied us with a timeline specific to various portions of the project. Once we have the permits in hand, we will then communicate to the membership the Club’s plan for access to the various areas of the clubhouse and what all the dining and fitness options will be. We will also finalize the golf routing plan for the course and staging area. The Club is pleased to welcome three new managers to Deering Bay. In addition to Nick Perusina, our new Director of Food and Beverage and Albert Montes, our Property Controller, Ahren Beers has joined us as Sous Chef. All three are excited to be here at Deering Bay and are ready to contribute to our ongoing quest for improvement. Enjoy your summer, and remember that Deering Bay is your ‘safe haven’ during these challenging times.

Sincerely,

Steven Sonenreich Peter J. Serena President General Manager

for Hurricane Season, which starts on June 1, and runs through November 30th. Most of you have been through many of these, but early preparations are important. Please be sure to review the Hurricane Tips section that is in this edition of the Newsletter. There is a lot of important information in this edition on the Summer Course Maintenance Closure schedule, and Lightning Alerts.

will be different then most summers. Some of you might not be traveling out of South Florida and will be staying at home during June and July. The

good news is that the club is here for your entertainment and relaxation. Deering Bay is your safe haven to dine, play golf, play tennis, and socialize with friends.

John Gale Director of Membership

Our Food and Beverage Team is working around the clock to make sure that you have a fantastic dining experience at the club. There is even talk of a new menu possibly coming out soon! I do not want to spoil the surprise so you will just have to stop by in June and July to find out for yourself. Please make sure you download the DBYCC App to stay informed with the latest news from the club and make your tee time reservations. If you do happen to travel make sure to stay connected with us throughout social media channels and share your pictures. Dave Ragan, has custom made DBYCC gaiters in the pro-shop to protect you against UV rays and you can also use the gaiters as a mask. Make sure you pick up your DBYCC gaiter before you travel. Please continue to stay strong and connected!

Troon has launched a series of live Q&A sessions with members of Team Troon via video conference. Our very own member Charles Kaplanek submitted a question to PGA Tour Player Matt Kuchar. Mr. Kaplaenk has recently joined the club and is learning how to play the game of golf after a 40-year hiatus. Here is a quote from Mr. Kaplanek:

“My question to Matt was how to get back into the game after a long hiatus due to career and travel?" I think his answer was very valid, especially for me, where he explained what to work on first, to carry the greatest effect on your new game.

Matt said, “it's really about the "short game" when restarting your play after a hiatus. He said the short game is the defensive part of golf and it is critical.” I certainly concur... And that's what I'm working on at this time.

Thanks Matt! To watch the Q&A interviews with various members of Team Troon please go to https://www.troon.com/team-troon-live/

n order to exceed member & guest expectations for golf course and ground conditions, summer aerification, along with many of our other scheduled agronomic procedures, is the foundation and building block to prepare the turf for the upcoming fall and winter months. Please see the following scheduled aerification information. More details are outlined in the following pages as well.

Dave Ragan III Head Golf Professional

GOLF COURSE & PRACTICE FACILITY Closed: Monday, June 22 thru Thursday, June 25 – Reopen: Friday, June 26 Closed: Monday, July 13 thru Friday, July 17 – Reopen: Saturday, July 18 Closed: Monday, August 10 thru Thursday, August 13 – Reopen: Friday, August 14 We ask for your patience and understanding as we prepare and complete our aerification practices this summer. We will strive to have the golf course in the best possible condition prior to our fall season. Thank you for your patience during our summer maintenance.

***IMPORTANT NOTICE*** LIGHTNING & SEVERE THUNDERSTORM POLICY Lightning strikes present a very real danger during outside activities at Deering Bay. The safety and security of our membership, staff and visiting personnel has always been and will continue to be our utmost priority. When the Thorguard system (lightning detection and warning system) begins to sound off, all staff members, including valet, have been instructed to immediately seek shelter indoors until the Thorguard system is no longer detecting any potential danger. During that time, we kindly request that you and your guests immediately leave the golf course, practice facilities, putting green, tennis area and pool. Please be advised that is for safety. The Thorguard system activates a warning indicator in several forms if there is a lightning strike within three miles of the Club. This warning indicator is reflected by a 15-second continuous long horn burst, AND flashing strobe lights. When the long horn burst sounds and flashing strobe lights are activated, the golf course and all other outside activities (e.g., pool, golf, tennis, and practice facilities) will be suspended. The flashing strobe lights can only be viewed if in the immediate vicinity of the detection system, i.e., at hole #3, #8, #13, #15 the clubhouse, and the maintenance facility. The flashing strobe lights will continue for the duration of the warning period, and will be deactivated once the warning period is terminated. Three short JUNE|JULY 2020 • 8

5-second horn bursts signal an “all clear” indicator, indicating no lightning strikes within three miles of the Club, and the reopening of the golf course for play. During sanctioned golf events, continued play when the warning indicator sounds results in immediate disqualification. Repeated violations of this policy may result in sanctions as determined by the Board of Directors, including the suspension of club privileges.

A N O T E FROM TENNIS

HOW WE’RE GETTING READY FOR THE SUMMER Summer is here and many members will be traveling. Although the gym and fitness center are temporarily closed to protect our members, our team and our community are offering virtual classes.

Renny Ramirez Director of Fitness

Trainers and Instructors will be here for all members during the summer months. If you would like to schedule a special class or individual instructions please contact the Fitness Center to schedule an appointment. We are still here working hard to ensure you have a clean and welcoming health club to return to, once we are allowed to re-open. I’m very excited to know that I’m going to be moving equipment around and making plans to choose the new equipment for the new facility and I’m very happy that we’re going to start renovations soon. These are hard times for everybody but we are here to set goals, short, medium and long term. With experienced instructors and trainers we will create strategies that will help you achieve your goals. That continues to be our priorities as we work to navigate these uncertain times together. Wishing you a happy , safe and healthy summer.

Pedro Leon Tennis Director

When it comes to our programs, we have resumed the singles play and private lessons, also starting in June we are offering summer camp for our juniors. For now our tennis competitive members will have to wait, USTA Florida has suspended tournaments and Leagues through June 30. They recently surveyed adult league players and found that many are not yet comfortable with resuming play; it all depends on how things go in these first phases. Most important of all, we would like to remind everyone to observe and follow the Safe Play Guidelines, which are posted on the outside bulletin board and inside the tennis shop. These protocols have been carefully developed to ensure compliance with state and local public health requirements, following measures such as these will ensure that the risk from COVID-19 is minimized. We thank everyone for your patience and understanding as our staff work diligently to restore the tennis program back to normal.

Sincerely, Pedro Leon Director of Tennis

S

ummer has begun, and here at Deering your Tennis Department is encouraging all the members to get out and play tennis this June and July, as part of the full Phase 1 reopening of the state. As state and local governments continue to reopen more parks and recreation areas, you may be looking for additional opportunities to get out and exercise. We would like to share with you that tennis is a great option for exercise and it can be done with little risk. Tennis is an ideal sport for families and individuals to play during this time, and it can be done safely with just a few modifications, we understand the challenges, and we have put a lot of work into the resumption of play at our own tennis courts.

t is an incredibly unique and exciting opportunity to begin a new position during these current circumstances. It is an opportunity that I am eager to take hold of as I begin to familiarize myself around the property and with my team. We have begun to reopen our dining rooms for dine-in service and I am very much looking forward to meeting each of you and your families and introducing myself in person. I have worked many roles in hospitality across this great country and am happy to bring all of my experience and passion in Food & Beverage to Deering Bay. I look forward to begin elevating our menus, and service within our restaurant and member events. We will continue to take the necessary precautions to maintain the highest standards for a safe and sanitized environment for our members. As state and local authorities update the guidelines for Food & Beverage operations, we will make the necessary adjustments and communicate that with you as we move forward. I am currently focusing on bringing back as much familiarity to the dining room as we can. At the end of May, we began offering our modified Happy Hour. As we are not allowed to have the customary buffet, we will offer complimentary à la carte chicken wings and reduced priced beers, house wines, and well drinks. We are also working on a plated Brunch menu on Sundays that will begin in the near future. I know many of you have been asking about the return of the continental morning breakfast. While this is not yet possible under our current dine-in guidelines, I certainly understand how much you enjoyed this amenity. I am currently working on possible ways to operate this in the future once the guidelines are loosened and will share more information with you when that time comes. I also want to share with you that Chef Roger and I are planning out specialty dinner entrées for Father’s Day as well as 4th of July.

I hope to see each of you back to the Club as soon as possible.

Cheers! Nick Perusina Director of Food & Beverage

Men’s President’s Cup 2020

On the tournament front, May has ended in a spectacular fashion crowning a new major champion. The Men’s President’s Cup began in November ’19 with a field of 68 golfers competing for the prestigious title, Net Match Play Champion! The format featured is Individual Match Play. The tournament came down to two high drama semifinal matches, Rudy Stern v. Stuart Bornstein and Larry Woerner v. Don Elliott. Much like the excitement of the “NCAA March Madness Tournament” both finalists battled through difficult semi-final matches to secure a spot in an all veteran final Stern v. Elliott. Ideal weather conditions, clear skies and warm temperatures greeted the championship match. Stern got off to a fast start and was 4 up through 7 holes. Elliott cut the deficit to 1, but Stern never looked back and secured the title 4&2. Congratulations to the 2020 President’s Cup Champion, Rudy Stern.

Congratulations!

Welcome Back! We Missed You!
