A M E S S A G E FROM THE PRESIDENT

T

he most frequently asked question around the Club is probably, “when are the renovations going to begin?”

The answer to that question is when we complete the phase one design detail and finalize our financing, we will be able to commit to a construction schedule. The finalization of these items is expected to be completed in June.

Steven Sonenreich President

Someone once said, “when you have time use it.” The ability to make quality decisions is enhanced when you use time to your advantage. Getting this renovation completed properly is a must, and I sincerely believe the time we are spending on a transformational design will be worth it. We will make every effort to display the finalized designs at the Club later this month. Along the line of using time to our advantage, the construction start date is still to be determined. We want to coordinate the construction plans with our 2020 budget and minimize both financial and member disruption. It is very possible that the core of this renovation could be delayed to summer 2020 in order to mitigate these challenges. Once again, let’s use the luxury of time to our advantage. The Board is challenging our corporate manager Troon to enhance our membership efforts. Although we are making good progress this year, we believe we could be a much more effective growing membership, and particularly with young membership incentives. At the May Board meeting, we approved new incentives to grow young membership. We will be finalizing and advising you and the community of this new offering later this month. Although we have lived in this community for many years, Helen and I did not have the opportunity to experience our Club’s predecessor Kings Bay Country Club. However, we consistently hear friends describe the Kings Bay experience with a smile that reflects the nostalgia and joy of family and camaraderie. We look forward to enhancing the country club experience at Deering Bay with our renovations and membership drive. The Club is as strong as its membership, and the experience and attractiveness for its current and prospective members. As we enter the summer season, we wish you a safe and enjoyable hiatus.

Sincerely yours, Steven Sonenreich President

A N O T E FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER/COO

I

can’t believe that spring is now over and summer is underway. With an increase in tournament activity and participation throughout the spring, and with increased participation in our Club’s dining activities and other social events, we are thankful for your continued patronage. Team members within our various departments have done an exceptional job in maintaining our Club’s tradition of excellence, and we all look forward to continuing this culture of excellence throughout the summer months as we serve you. Further, with our continued focus on staff training and development, new membership benefits, and other areas as we seek to enhance your membership experience, we look forward to what the remainder of 2019 has to offer.

Lee Andrea General Manager/ COO

Some of you are preparing to depart for your summer homes, while others will share the summer months with us here at the Club. Whatever activities you engage in, kindly remember to tag us on your social media platforms and please follow us on our various platforms so you can receive Club updates, etc. As a friendly reminder, our Club’s social media handles are - @dbycc (Facebook); @deeringbay (Instagram); @Deering_Bay (Twitter); or use the #dybcc hashtag to remain connected to your Deering Bay family. Sharing our members’ experiences and memorable moments with our existing and potential membership community is truly a welcome proposition. We look forward to viewing your posts in the coming months. Thank you to those who have already provided feedback through the Member Satisfaction Survey. Although participation is voluntary and anonymous, we kindly request that those who have not had an opportunity to provide feedback do so as soon as your schedules warrant. Please also note that as you advance through the survey, you have the option of declining answers to specific questions, if desired. Your feedback will be instrumental in advancing our employee training and development goals, and streamlining any aspects of our operations that we deem appropriate. Kindly keep in mind that the deadline date for completing and submitting your survey responses is Wednesday, June 5. Thank you. Hurricane season officially begins today, and being safe and prepared is a critical element of our Club’s operations during the coming months. We strongly recommend that you monitor the local news and any updates we provide, since evacuations are sometimes an element of our logistics during inclement weather. Please feel confident that our Club has started the hurricane season preparation process, and are ready for emergency closures and other logistics associated with inclement weather, if necessary. We are delighted to issue a friendly reminder regarding our summer camp and golf workshops, which will run from June 10 through August 9. Please be sure to sign up as soon as possible while there is still availability. One of our most important goals is to ensure the youngest among us enjoy the summer months during their time off from school, and get an opportunity to build camaraderie and share the unique opportunities and experiences our Club has created specifically for them. Our annual course maintenance, which will include aeration, has begun and will continue through the beginning of August. We have also scheduled maintenance within the clubhouse, which will include deep cleaning. We will also use some time during the summer months for staff training and development, so we kindly request that you are familiar with modified opening and closing schedules as reflected below. One of our foremost priorities during the summer months is to put all elements in place to ensure enhancement of your membership experience in the fall and winter months.

A M E S S A G E FROM TENNIS

A

s the season comes to an end, we want to congratulate all the teams in their efforts and accomplishments. We are proud to see all of our ladies showing their skills and improvements in all areas of tennis. Essentially, playing tennis is to have fun and enjoy each other’s company while we continue to improve our game.

Pedro Leon Tennis Director

Summer on the courts has begun. All of our regular summer schedule clinics are in motion and the attendance has been excellent. For those who enjoy playing tennis, we would like to invite you to come and play in our upcoming events. In May, all of our ladies’ tennis leagues concluded, and to celebrate another successful season we will host the end of the season round robin and barbecue on Saturday, June the 8th. Everyone is invited and we expect a large participation from our members. Please keep a look out for flyers with dates and times of future events. You may also contact the tennis ProShop for further details and questions (305-256-3366). The heat is up and the sweat is dripping with intense tennis competition from the green clay of Deering Bay to the red clay of the French Open. Roger Federer is displaying his unparalleled elegance and Rafael Nadal is dominating as the clay court king. However impressive, Roger and Rafa are not the only two making a mark in the wonderful world of tennis. Our very own Ladies USTA 3.5 senior team won the league for the second year in a row and represented us very well in the Sectional Championship celebrated in Orlando, Fl. Last but not least, we would like to remind everyone to wear the proper tennis attire and shoes, so that we can continue to play on the finest courts in the area. As well, we kindly advise that reservations be made no earlier than two days in advance before 5 pm. After 5 pm all walk-ins are welcomed!

Sincerely, Pedro Leon Director of Tennis

Max’s Selections of the Month

Northstar, Merlot, Columbia Valley, WA, 2013 It has been nearly 15 years since the release of the movie Sideways where the wine enthusiast Miles (Paul Giamatti) expresses his dislike for Merlot. The Sideways effect on Merlot was not good, to say the least. Over the years, every time someone would mention that they didn’t like Merlot, I would say, have you had the Duckhorn, Frog’s Leap or Northstar Merlot? Because they are beauties. The wineries that I just mentioned truly do an amazing job at showcasing the potential of the Merlot grape. Join me this month in enjoying a well-made Merlot. This wine shows notes of cherry, blueberry and plum with undertones of vanilla and kiss of oak onto mature tannins on balanced finish. G: $13 | B: $52
