A M E S S A G E FROM THE PRESIDENT

W

e had a month of robust, high quality Board and board committee meetings that are true signs of membership engagement that is crucial to having a successful club. I want to thank those members that give their time and forward thinking ability to the committee and governance process.

Steven Sonenreich President

Additionally, I am pleased to report that we are working through the approval process with the MPOA on the paint color for the club. I am optimistic that we will get to an agreement shortly, so that we can finalize our renovation project’s specification for permitting and stay on target to begin construction in late April. The Board also approved Bob Walters as the MPOA representative to the club’s Board. On behalf of our Board, we look forward to working with Bob and also thank Dick Griesemer for his years of insightful service. At the February Board meeting, we reviewed January financials which are slightly better than budget and indicated a significant increase in golf rounds and golf shop activity. Of course, one month does not make a trend, but we are off to a good start of 2020. Our membership continues to stay steady and our promotional activities are definitely generating leads and new members. We also discussed the need to follow club rules and regulations that have not been given sufficient attention. The commitment to the rules outlining the use of club facilities by guests of members and our dress code is important to our Board and membership. We will be publicizing and refreshing everyone on these rules and regulations beginning now and on a regular basis to establish fairness to our members and the right culture at our club. Please take the time to read these rules and regulations and about our dress code and be supportive of this commitment. Thank you for your support and interest in our club.

Sincerely, Steven Sonenreich President

A N O T E FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

H

ello Deering Bay Members! February ended with a flurry of activity. We had a sold out Valentine’s Day Dinner Dance and an exciting Women’s Member/ Member Tournament. The Men’s Member-Guest was a success by all accounts and congratulations go out to all the flight winners and our overall champions. Dave Ragan, Jimmy Germana, Chef Roger, Jessica Terry in Catering and our F&B Director, Dana Pekarchik, had a great week of meals, snacks and libations planned for our members and their guests.

Peter Serena General Manager

What an exciting time to be at Deering Bay. The upcoming renovation is getting closer every day, and I hope you share the same level of anticipation that the associates and I do for what a great impact it will have for the Club. We are making progress daily in completing the necessary steps to finalize the permitting process. So far, (knock on wood), we have been completing all the forms and tests without any issues. This is helping us tremendously in getting to the final submission step with our plans. We are also in the final stages of officially engaging a contractor that will perform the work. Operationally, we are working on updating the original plan that was created as to what amenities will remain available to the members throughout the renovation. Until we have the contractor on board, and they have engaged their subs, we won’t be able to release the full schedule. From a Fitness perspective, we do plan to have aerobic equipment and some basic group exercise classes available in some form throughout the renovation. The venues and times will all be subject to change, but provisions will be made to keep everyone on a fitness regimen. In regard to dining, we will have options available for lunch and dinner. We currently plan to use the Crystal Room and Pool Patio for meal service. The Golf Shop will remain open, as will the course, but there will be routing changes in regard to the staging area and play on the course. At this point our Tennis operation will be unaffected. We will detail all of this to you in future communications. I am hearing very positive feedback from the membership on the progress we are making in Food & Beverage, particularly with the food. Chef Roger has been with us two months now and has been steadily improving the quality of food, with both taste and presentation. His daily and nightly specials have been well received, as we showcase his talents, and test out some items for an upcoming menu change. If you have not dined with us on weekends, we have instituted our Seafood Night on Friday nights and Steak Night on Saturdays. Each week Chef Roger runs specials appropriate with those themes. You really need to come out and try it, if you haven’t already. For our lunch crowd, we have expanded Taco Tuesdays and added two additional fillings each week, including a seafood option. For those of you who have commented on our Tuesday Pasta Night Buffet, we have listened. We are now offering the a la carte Bar Menu, that normally runs from 2:30-6:00 pm, until 9:00pm. Our Committees Meetings have also started up again. This is all part of the Club’s governance process, and vital to the health of the club. Involvement in the committees is a good ‘first step’ in grooming future Board members on how the club governance works, and to help shape the future of the club through the committees on which you serve. We recently sent out the Social Calendar to all members with the remaining four months of activities. I hope that you will find this helpful in planning your social activities at the Club. Coming up in March, Pedro in Tennis will be hosting our Women’s Tennis Member – Guest, the Pretzel and Tennis Night Out and the Ladies WGA has their ‘3 Jills and a Jack’ event. We have a number of Kid and Teen events planned and look forward to continued family participation at Deering Bay. On the Food and Beverage front, we have our Member Mixer, some exciting themes for our Sunday Pop Up Grills, a Wine Tasting on the 25th, and a Cooking Class on the 27th. Please refer to the aforementioned calendar for dates and specifics.

Sincerely, Peter Serena General Manager

A N O T E FROM GOLF

Men’s Annual Member-Guest Invitational

Dave Ragan III Head Golf Professional

The Annual Men’s Member-Guest Invitational is a golf tournament that has crowned many worthy champions over the past 23 years. The participants of this year’s MemberGuest had to endure some of South Florida’s most challenging elements; high winds, on and off rain coupled with a perfectly manicured golf course with green speeds that left the most seasoned golfers at times looking perplexed. The ’20 edition assembled the largest field in tournament history, 48 teams. The teams were divided into 8 flights with 6 teams per flight. The tournament format featured 5 nine-hole matches of match play with teams accumulating points in each match. Thursday’s practice round started off on the right foot with more than three-quarters of the field coming out to hone their skills. The following two days of exciting competition shined a bit more favorably on some teams that became your Member-Guest flight winners. Now that the flight winners have been established, the eight teams plus two wild-cards (highest point total outside the flight winners) were set for a sudden death playoff beginning on the 18th hole. With great anticipation the teams marched to the tee for instructions. The playoff format was a difficult one…ALTERNATE SHOT! With great anticipation nearly 100 spectators gathered around #18 green and questions soon ensued. Could the Elliott and Tsotsos team win it all? Would Katz and Young finely win the elusive title? Could the rookies Escobar and Requejo pull it off? Would Borja and Rios putt their way to the championship? Or would the Baron and Woerner (co-chairs) teams be able to orchestrate a win just as well as they coordinated the tournament? After all the teams nearly completed the 18th hole, 3 teams emerged with an opportunity to win the title…van der Reis/Lampl, Elliott/Tsotsos, and Escobar/Requejo. By the slimmest of margins the van der Reis/Lampl and Elliott/Tsotsos teams missed putts settling for pars. The stage was set; the Escobar/Requejo team needed two-putts from 15-feet to seal the victory. Mr. Requejo nearly holed the nerve-racking putt and Mr. Escobar calmly tapped in the short net birdie putt for the W! Congratulations to Mr. Mo Escobar and Mr. Luis Requejo the 2020 Men’s Annual Member-Guest Overall Champions. (Pictures in Page 13) Champions: Congratulations to Viera Kovac for her amazing championship run in ’20. Mrs. Kovac won the Women’s Match Play Championship by defeating 4-time champion Kay Waltman in the final. Kovac’s winning ways continued as she partnered with Waltman to win the Women’s Member-Member Championship over runner-up and defending champions Kathy Sanchez and Ellen Downey. Amazing! Carlos Casuso and Arthur Gilbert carded holes-in-ones within a two-week time span. Both great shots were recorded on hole #5. Congratulations Mr. Casuso and Dr. Gilbert!!! On the Horizon: April is Championship month! All the Deering Bay Club Championships are held in the month of April so sharpen your golf game and sign-up at the golf shop today! SAVE THE DATE: Thursday, April 2nd Women’s Member-Guest Invitational - “Wild About Golf”. GREENS R E P O R T

I

t is nice to report that the weather has finally changed for the better. We have had high temperatures and humidity over the past month which is great news for the turf on the course. The algae is rapidly starting to dissipate, and the bare areas have started to fill in nicely. We will continue to add extra sand, sprays, and scraping to these areas until they are completely eliminated. We also will be doing a Dryject at the end of the month to help with the health of the greens. This is a process where sand is injected into the greens with a machine. We have done this over the years and it is a great tool for the soil health of the plant. The following day there will be James “Jimmy” Germana a little more sand on the top of the greens than usual, but should not affect the ball Director of Grounds roll. I want to thank all of you that participated in the Member-Guest this year, and all of the compliments I heard about the condition of the golf course. It is always great to hear that all the hard work from the maintenance staff is enjoyed by all of our members. As always feel free to contact me anytime with any questions you might have at j.germana@dbycc.com and always remember to fix your ball marks and fill your divots. A N O T E FROM TENNIS

I

n keeping up with the year’s festivities, March will be a very eventful month. All of our clinics and events are going well and this month will be no different. Tournaments, clinics and great events all describe our tennis family’s year-to-date accomplishments and we anticipate more to come.

Pedro Leon Tennis Director

In February, all clinics, USTA and SFWDL matches went off as scheduled. On February 13, we hosted the Valentine’s Doubles & Mixed troubles special event where our members had a great night of tennis and fun. Lindsay Trax was our Valentine’s winner and Maggie Wilson the runner up (see pictures below). As always we would like to see everyone out on the courts. The success of all our events depends on the participation of our members. We are looking forward to our upcoming events. On March 12, we will have the most important one of the year, “The Annual Women’s Member Guest.” This is a fun, competitive and well organized tournament where our heavy hitters will compete once again for bragging rights. Keeping up with our exciting tennis program schedule, on March 19 we host a Pretzels & Beers Tennis Night Out, promising a lot of fun for our members. Be sure to sign up and partake in all the excitement. In addition to all the events taking place within our program, we also have the USTA and SFWDL matches being played both at home and away. Please call or pass by the Tennis Shop for additional information. On behalf of your friends from the Tennis Shop, have a wonderful month! Sincerely, Pedro Leon Director of Tennis
