A M E S S A G E FROM THE PRESIDENT & THE GENERAL MANAGER

A

s we head into the month of March, things continue to improve at the Club. Our newsletter this month will provide you with updates on several topics of interest to you, our members.

Steven Sonenreich President

On the renovation front, Origin Construction continues to move forward in several areas. They continue to stay on schedule with the project, particularly AC, Plumbing, Fire Safety, and site work that may not always be visible to you in some areas of the Club. They have been getting the necessary inspections to portions of the work as it is completed so they can move on to next steps on the construction schedule. Most noticeable in the month of February was the opening of the east wall of the clubhouse, closest to the practice putting green, to remove the AC units that service the men’s locker room, ladies locker room and bar/lounge. They then installed three new units, piping and ductwork. This presented some discomfort to these areas for members (and associates) as the Golf Shop and Admin Offices were affected, but necessary in advance of the chiller replacement that is coming up soon. Following that will be the work on the expansion of the Fitness Center and Group Exercise Room. We continue to work on the low voltage plan and installation so they can move ahead with hanging of drywall in the bar/lounge and youth room. We are happy to announce the permit for the new enhanced 19th Hole is out of Zoning and moving through the remaining city approvals. The condition of our greens has been a widely discussed topic over the past 60 days. As Jimmy Germana has been reporting, the agronomic practices, sunshine and warm weather have all been favorable and the greens are improving. We expect by mid-March that they will be better than 80%. The heavy rain we had in mid-February actually helped our cause as it flushed unwanted salt buildup through the soil and gave the grass and roots fresh water to help absorb the fertilizers that he has been applying. To aid in the recovery of the greens, and overall condition of the course, please take great pride in repairing your ball marks, filling divots and focusing on better driving habits, particularly around the greens and tees. Membership activity continues to be very positive. While we continue interviewing for a Director, Daniella has been extremely busy fielding inquiries, giving tours and processing new members who are interested in joining the Club. Our membership counts are tracking to budget with many new Preview Members joining the Club. Our conversion rate on these Preview members is very good, but we can all act as ambassadors in being welcoming to all our new members, to assist in their orientation, and to help demonstrate why Deering Bay is such a great club to belong to for years to come. We continue to work on scheduling more member events and activities where we can and still provide them in a COVID safe manner. Car Club, Wine Tasting, Movie Nights, Fitness Power Walks, Garden Plantings and Guest Lectures are just a few of the offerings we have had, with many more to come.

MARCH 2021 • 4

As we have communicated in the past, we continue to ask everyone to still follow our COVID guidelines. Although many of you have been vaccinated, it is not a 100% guarantee. Please continue to wear your masks, practice social distancing, have your temperature taken, use sanitizer and wash hands frequently. This goes a long way in keeping you and others safer and respecting those who are more at risk.

Peter Serena General Manager

March is such a great month to be in Florida. Take time to enjoy the longer days, great weather, your friends and all the activities our Club at Deering Bay has to offer. Sincerely, Steven Sonenreich Peter J. Serena President General Manager

M E S S A G E CONTINUED

Although too early to report on our February financial results, we can let you know that 2021 started off well for us financially. January’s numbers were aided by increased rounds, continued strong retail sales of merchandise, particularly clubs and bags. Food and Beverage had strong sales as members begin to feel safer returning to the Club or taking advantage of our Curbside offerings. Tennis lessons, as with golf rounds, are well above the norm. Collectively, these factors helped us end our first month slightly ahead of budget. One month does not make a trend, but we forward to similar results in February.

MEMBERSHIP M E S S A G E

T

he Ambassador Program at Deering Bay is still looking for member volunteers. It is an effective way for current members to share their love of Deering Bay with newcomers. Since the beginning of the year we have had 20 families join the Club and we are expecting many more as we see a lot of families moving to Miami from Connecticut, Massachusetts and New York.

Daniella Tosta Membership Manager

What is the Club Ambassador Program? Club Ambassadors help new members make the transition from a new member to an involved member of the Club! A Club Ambassador will assist the new member with a smooth integration into the Deering Bay lifestyle. Who can be an Ambassador? All Club members can volunteer to be a Deering Bay Ambassador. As an Ambassador you will be: • Club Cheerleader – involved in the Club, who frequently attends Club events and activities. • Welcome Wagon – reaching out to new members with a welcome email or phone call. • Buddy – extending an invitation for a round of golf or initiation to a Club social event. • Friends – willing to be paired with new members for activities and social events. What are the duties of an Ambassador? • Based on interests, Ambassadors members would be assigned to each new Club member. • The Ambassador will call or email their assigned new member within the first week of joining. • The Ambassador will invite their assigned new member to join him/her to a Member Mixer, continental breakfast, lunch or dinner. • Ambassadors and their assigned new members will attend a new member reception to meet other new members, Ambassadors and Board Members. How long is an Ambassador assignment? Roughly a season. After two months, however, new members should be pretty well integrated into life at Deering Bay. Ambassadors should continue to send an email or call to check-in with their assigned new member for the remainder of the season. Who knows? You might have met a friend for life. We are always looking for new Ambassadors, so if you are interested in participating, please pass by the Front Office or contact me, Daniella Tosta at d.tosta@dbycc.com and I will forward you the Ambassador form.

Please congratulate...

INGRID RODRIGUEZ who is the winner of the “Membership Ambassador Raffle” for the Month of MARCH. Mrs. Rodriguez, thank you for your referral. Please see Daniella in the Membership Office to receive your prize of a Brunch for two with mimosas or a Golf Foursome. *This voucher must be claimed within 30 days of announcement. This Voucher is non-transferable and must be fulfilled within one year of receiving it. Warm regards, Daniella Tosta Membership Manager MARCH 2021 • 6

A M E S S A G E FROM THE F&B DIRECTOR

T

hank you to all 60 members who came out and dined with us on Valentine’s Day evening, we received a lot of great comments from Chef Jon’s Valentine’s menu! Speaking of Chef Jon, be sure to reserve your ingredients now until March 3rd for our “Virtual Cooking with Chef Jon” that will take place on March 5th at 6PM. This will be an exciting training video from Chef to demonstrate and teach everyone how to prepare our very popular Stuffed Portobello Mushroom appetizer in your own home.

Nicholas Perusina Food & Beverage Director

Celebrate “Taco Tuesdays” with us every Tuesday night from 5:30PM – 8:30PM for $3 tacos, $5 Rice & Beans, and $5 Margaritas (available for dine in only). We will still offer our normal dinner menu on Tuesdays, but this is a great chance to try some great tacos at a very reasonable price! We will be hosting a second wine tasting from the Trinchero Family Estates portfolio on Tuesday, March 23rd at 6:30PM in the Courtyard. We had a lot of success in January with our first tasting from Trinchero, now we will offer it in the Courtyard where members can feel even safer sitting outdoors with fresh air all around. Seating is limited, so be sure to reserve your spot by emailing me or calling 305-964-4045. Please see the flyer for a list of the wines we will be tasting. Passover is around the corner and we are thrilled to announce a Passover a la carte Seder Dinner menu with a traditional Seder plate for anyone interested in dining in with us on Saturday March 27th. For members not yet ready to venture out, we will also have a “family style” menu for curbside pickup with the same great Seder menu items as served in the restaurant. Please call ahead to reserve your table, or place your pickup order with Jessica Terry at j.terry@dbycc.com. Sunday, April 4th from 11AM – 4PM we will be hosting an a la carte Easter Brunch at the Club (yes, the Easter Bunny is set to make an appearance as well). Chef Jon will feature some excellent items such as a Crab Cake Melt, Shrimp & Grits, Nutella Stuffed French Toast, Cheese Blintzes just to name a few. We do expect a large turnout so please be sure to call ahead and make a reservation to guarantee your spot. Finally, outdoor seating has become increasingly more popular in the world of Food & Beverage, not just at Deering Bay but around the country as well. As you may know, our only outdoor seating is the Courtyard in the middle of the Club. The space here is very limited, especially on the weekends, in order to maintain the required proper distancing of tables. We ask that everyone continue to call ahead for reservations, but if you would like to sit specifically in the Courtyard, it is best to call at least a week in advance so that we can do our best to accommodate your seating preference. As always, we appreciate your patience and understanding as we continue to work on preventing the spread of COVID-19 through temperature checks and social distancing. Cheers! Nick Perusina Director of Food & Beverage

CARE FOR OUR COURSE REMEMBER TO REPAIR YOUR PITCH MARKS

At this time of year it is great to see so many members and guests enjoying the course and club overall. However, we are quickly seeing signs of the increased traffic with the number of unrepaired pitch marks on the greens now. We remind all member and guests that it is their responsibility to repair their pitch marks on greens, as a means of caring for the course and respecting their fellow golfers.

DIVOTS IN THE WINTER

Similar to pitch marks, divots seem more prominent at this time of year. This is because the Paspalum (a warm season grass species) within our fairways and tees, recovery from damage such as divots is a lot slower than during the warmer months. Therefore, filling divots correctly with sand is an even more important aspect of course etiquette at this time of year, to ensure the best quality playing surfaces for yourself and fellow golfers. Please ensure you and everyone else in your group is using the sand bucket or bottle provided, with divots filled with sand and leveled off by foot to avoid leaving a mound of sand or a depression.

A M E S S A G E FROM TENNIS

I

n keeping with the year’s festivities, March will be a very eventful month. All of our clinics and events are going well and this month will not be different. Tournaments, clinics and great events all describe our tennis family’s year to date accomplishments and now we have more ahead.

Pedro Leon Tennis Director

In February, all clinics, USTA and SFWDL matches continued as schedule. On the 6th we organized an event on the memory of Maurice Kutner; where the Club dedicated Court #2 to his memory for his contributions to the Club and the tennis community. It was followed by a round robin with great participation. On the 11th we hosted the Valentine’s Doubles & Mixed Troubles special event where our members had a great night of tennis and fun. Also well attended on the 20th we had the Mixed Doubles Member/ Member or Guest. All of our events success depends of the participation of our members. We would like to thank them for their continued support. Now looking forward to our future events on Thursday, March 18 we normally host our most important one of the year, “The Women’s Member-Guest.” This is a fun, competitive and well organized tournament where our heavy hitters duke it out for bragging rights but, unfortunately this year due to the pandemic we feel it is best to cancel it. On Saturday, March 27 for the first time ever we are hosting a Men & Women’s Handicap Championship event. Besides these events taking place within our program we also have USTA and SFWDL matches being played both at home and away. Please call or stop by the Tennis Shop for more information. Last month, we introduced some tactics for competing against counterpunchers and I’d like to give you some more: • Be patient and aggressive When playing a counterpuncher, it will take more than one good shot to win the point. Always seek opportunities to be aggressive, yet be prepared to hit 3-4 extra shots before finishing off the point. On behalf of your friends from the Tennis Shop, have a wonderful month. Sincerely we look forward to seeing you. Thanks. Yours Truly, Pedro Leon Director of Tennis
