Moving to a New Normal
We’re Glad To Have You Back! Please Follow The CDC Guidelines And Stay Safe!
A M E S S A G E FROM THE PRESIDENT & THE GENERAL MANAGER
W
elcome to May and a fresh beginning at the Club. We are sure you were all as relieved and excited to receive the news that we could begin to reopen the Club. The County’s Phase One plan allowed
us to open up our golf course and tennis courts, as well as starting Curbside Takeout service with Food & Beverage. As you know, there are restrictions on how we can operate in these areas right now, but most will agree that even with the guidelines, it’s better than not having them at all. Please take some time to
Steven Sonenreich read through them here in the newsletter and become familiar with them and President what is permitted under Phase 1 as it pertains to golf, tennis and dining.
We look forward to news on a Phase 2 rollout that will include opening the clubhouse for meals, fitness, card rooms, the pool and maybe some relaxed rules to golf and tennis. Please continue to take advantage of the online live fitness classes offered on Zoom and our other virtual calendar items. We appreciate everyone’s patience in the meantime. As the clubhouse will not be open for Mother’s Day Brunch this year, Chef Roger has created a Mother’s Day Menu and will do all the cooking for Mom’s on their special day. Meals will be prepared family style and you will have a choice of soups, salads, appetizers, four entrees, six side dishes and desserts. It will require you to preorder by May 4th, and you will be able to pick up your dinners on Mother’s Day to celebrate in style. During the closure, we missed the opportunity to recognize the 30th Birthday of Deering Bay Yacht & Country Club. It may have come and gone, without our ability to celebrate it as we had wished. But it gives us chance to reflect on the rich history of the Club, the many great members who have been a part of it, past and present, and the strong friendships that develop. The progress on our renovation continues. As we went to print, we were expecting final approvals from Miami Dade County on the remaining Derm-Pollution items. Once received from MDC, the City of Coral Gables will continue with their review and approvals. We expect that to take another month and to receive our permits in June. In the month of April we received the following approvals: • • • • • • MAY 2020 • 4

the clubhouse being closed and our inability to hold indoor events, this meeting was postponed. It is the Board of Director’s intent to hold this meeting at the earliest opportunity. We are working on an agenda to discuss such items as the results of the 2019 independent audit, current financial status, the impact of the closure and upcoming renovation. For those of you who are planning to head to cooler climes for the summer, please be sure to stay connected with Deering Bay with the Deering Bay App,

A N O T E FROM GOLF
I speak for everyone here when I say it sure feels like we are starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. While the COVID-19 situation has been going on, we have been working relentlessly here to prepare for the new normal for the coming months. While the end of our golf season many have been slightly delayed, we want you to know that we are ready for you now that we are open.
Dave Ragan III Head Golf Professional
Walking around your golf shop, I see shelves lined with beautiful men’s and women’s wear, the latest in equipment, caps, hats, accessories and more, ready to go out to the course here or where you summer. I can assure you no one is ready to meet your golf needs like we are now that we are open, and this situation is finally starting to get behind us. For the next several months, the Golf Shop will continue to promote special sales we hope you take full advantage of. We understand times are tough for everyone and want to offer you some of the best pricing on our merchandise and equipment to help. Please do not hesitate to reach out to myself or Nicole if we can assist you and your family in any way. TOURNAMENT UP-DATE Club Championships All Club Championships have been postponed pending our ability to secure dates for them. The President’s Cup In November, 61 participants began play in the individual event known as the Match Play Club Championship. After escaping the gauntlet of competition, the field narrowed its way to the final four. One side of the bracket places Stuart Bornstein vs. Rudy Stern and the opposite side has Don Elliott vs. Larry Woerner. Thank you to all who participated in this year’s event and good luck to the remaining players. WGA Twin Trophy The WGA Twin Trophy is considered one of the club’s most prestigious women’s major tournaments. The format featured is one better-ball of two, match play. The tournament has reached the semi-final stage with Dede Sloto and Raisa Connolly vs. Jill Schwartz and Pam Wolofsky. The other side of the bracket has Debra Frank and Karen Baron vs. Kay Waltman and Karen Levine. Good luck ladies and congratulations on reaching the Semi’s. The 2020-21 Golf Calendar is shaping up to be a busy one including more social, couples and youth activities. We’re anticipating the best golf course conditions ever and an increase in participation in all the events. On behalf of the entire golf staff here at Deering Bay I sincerely wish you and your family a happy, healthy and safe summer!
Best regards, Dave Ragan Head Golf Professional

mOVING TO A NEW NORMAL
Are you Exercising or Training? Is there a difference? Yes! Exercising is something one does to get the blood flowing. Almost everyone who works out exercises, but not everyone who works out trains. Exercising makes people feel good, but it lacks the intensity necessary to elicit the neuroendocrine response that alters the metabolism and affects the muscles. What is Training? It is a program of constantly varied, functional movements, performed with high intensity. Training requires pushing through barriers, it means tracking your progress by logging your workouts and food intake.
Renny Ramirez Director of Fitness
We offer great classes if you would like to exercise, but if you would like to try your hand at training, you will first learn mechanics, movements, function and form. From there we will increase the intensity & weight. Training is hard work and it requires perseverance, determination and consistency.

A N O T E FROM TENNIS
S Pedro Leon Tennis Director
ummer is very much on its way, and here on our clay courts we had a month that we will never forget. Our teams were doing great, especially the USTA 3.5 seniors who were running away with another championship trophy. Unfortunately, the season came to a complete halt. On April 3, as the coronavirus pandemic was just beginning to disrupt the social habits of Americans from coast to coast, the United States Tennis Association said in a statement that “it is in the best interest of society to take a collective pause from playing the sport we love.” USTA leagues were not the only affected, all of the south Florida competitions were cancelled and our tennis courts were closed. Now we are looking forward to our new future. With the lifting of the restrictions on tennis, we were able to resume our tennis program on April 29th. Tennis will be a great opportunity to relieve stress, socialize with others, from six feet away, and provide you with much needed exercise. With the return to play, our primary importance is taking every precaution to help keep all members safe. During this time off we have been keeping our members engaged through virtual videos, phone calls, and more! This month will not be different. The last article we wrote about how to stay active at home with a valley grip/ball control exercise, this time we would like to recommend how to practice your drop shots against a wall.
Exercise: 1. Rally forehand and backhand strokes against the wall 2. Rally two forehand strokes and for the third one as the ball is approaching switch to continental 3. With the continental grip swing through the ball softly and high to low creating back spin on it 4. Alternate with your backhand Do you really know how to play on clay courts? Playing on clay courts is totally different than playing on hard court; that is why we would like to share with you this tip for better play on clay. • Set up your attack shot: it is very difficult to hit clean winners at any time on clay and there are no shortcuts. You must learn to end the point with a sequence of shots. Work your opponent off the court then attack when the percentages are in your favor.
TENNIS QUOTES LOOK ... LISTEN ... AND LEARN 1. 1. A bad temper is a real key to failure 2. The mind is either for you or against you 3. You play with your skills, but you really win with your will
Sincerely, Pedro Leon Director of Tennis MAY 2020 • 12
