A M E S S A G E FROM THE PRESIDENT

T

hank you to all of those who attended our open forum this past Sunday afternoon. The attendance was very good and is a key indicator of the interest that Members have in the success of our Club. We will be scheduling another open forum before the end of the year to provide an update on the phasing of our construction plans which we are projecting to start mid-January of 2020. Our expectation is to have our building permits secured this month. Once we have that in hand, we will be able to present our plans to minimize disruption of food and beverage and fitness activities during this transformative project.

Steven Sonenreich President

The Board went through a challenging budget process led by our Treasurer, Rob Sperber. Given the construction project, we budgeted as conservatively as possible to arrive at a budget that has a reasonable deficit. Accordingly, there will be an annual increase in dues for full golf members of $1,250 and a relative increase for other membership categories. You will recall that there was not a dues increase for the current annual period. As you are probably aware Troon has provided us with interim leadership for the general manager and executive chef positions. If you have met both Jerome Louie and Patrick Aftanas, I am certain that you will agree that both gentlemen will provide quality management while we work with Troon for permanent leadership. The general manager search is underway and we expect to be interviewing candidates before year’s end. As we finalize plans for 2020, I ask for everyone’s patience and understanding as we seek to create a “New DBYCC” that will be attractive to residents in our community that value a high quality country club lifestyle. We have the most beautiful golf course in the county and with dining and fitness facilities to match we should be very successful.

Thank you for your support,

Steven Sonenreich President

A N O T E FROM THE INTERIM GENERAL MANAGER

I

want to thank all those Members that I have met so far for the warm welcome to Deering Bay Yacht & Country Club….almost as warm as the south Miami weather. Welcome back! To all those members who are returning home to DBYCC from their summer haunts, I look forward to meeting you.

Jerome Louie Interim General Manager

As most already know, I am here as your interim general manager, along with our interim Executive Chef, Patrick Aftanas. Chef Patrick and I have worked together on other assignments in the past. As “interims,” that doesn’t mean that we are here to just “hold down the fort.” Our goal, while we are here is to set a footprint and to make an impact! We work with our perspective teams, we observe, analyze, and then institute changes that will benefit the Club and its Members. I will be a liaison between the Members and our Board of Directors, and vice versa. I will also share with the incoming general manager my experiences at DBYCC and information/game plan for a successful transition and future with this great club. As Chef Patrick and I “work the floor,” we encourage and welcome your constructive criticism. Let’s all work together for DBYCC! In the short time that I have been at Deering Bay, I can see that you have a great membership and a Board that is dedicated, forward thinking and working hard to ensure the success of our Club. The management team and associates also care about their Club, for many, this is their family. From the Members, I ask just two things: Invite and encourage your friends and families to become a part of Deering Bay Yacht & Country Club. When you surround yourself with friends and family, life is so much better and the Club is much more vibrant. DBYCC is a hidden jewel. When Club renovations have been completed, we will see an upturn in membership growth. Now is the perfect time for your friends to take advantage of the Pre-Construction Membership Program. Please contact our Director of Membership, John Gale (j.gale@ dbycc.com) for details. Be respectful of fellow members, the Club and the staff. As we kick off the season, don’t forget what makes your Club special. • Protect and care for your golf course – replace your divots and repair your ball marks (and at least two others), pick up your tees. • Display proper decorum in the dining facilities. Appropriate attire and phone etiquette only further enhances our Country Club. Please call in advance for dining reservations – we can serve your better. We have an exciting season ahead of us. For those who attended the Open Forum on October 27, you heard an update on the Capital Renovation project. The decision to postpone “ground breaking” until January 13, will allow you and your families to enjoy your Club through the Holidays. For those who have held off on booking a party, now is the time to reserve your room. Don’t forget, this will be applied toward your food minimums.

Thank you, Jerome Louie

REMINDER

A nnual F ood & B everage Minimums Expire on D ecember 31, 2019! Please make sure to enjoy your Club and avoid the last minute rush. Any unused minimums will be billed on the December 31 statement. No exceptions please! Better to USE IT, than to LOSE IT! NOVEMBER 2019 • 6

GREENS R E P O R T

I

hope everyone has enjoyed their summer, and welcome back to all of you that have been away. We had a very productive summer this year on the golf course. Unfortunately, the end was very challenging with the weather and the King Tides that hit us again. The month of August we saw just over 20 inches of rain here on the golf course, and September brought the largest King Tides I have seen in my 4 years here at Deering Bay. In addition to the tides in September, we also received some at the beginning of October. These were not as bad, but we did have water standing on turf for some time. With our extremely wet August and September, we did fall behind on detail work and weed control. Since then, we have been working very diligently to get back on schedule James “Jimmy” Germana and I can say we are very close to making up all the lost time. For the past 3 weeks, we Director of Grounds have really attacked the weed issue on the golf course by spraying and pulling weeds. I am sure everyone has noticed the yellowing of some weeds as well and sand spots on the course from the weeds that were pulled. These spots will heal in within the next couple of weeks, especially with the unseasonably high temperatures we have been experiencing; we also applied a pre-emergent herbicide to the course this past Monday to help with any new weeds forming. We will be finishing up our detail work within the next couple of weeks. All palms on the course will be trimmed by the end of October, and the pine straw has been spread over the past two days. Lastly, we will be refreshing the bunkers throughout the golf course for better playability. On a more positive note, the turf around the course is extremely healthy and I am looking forward to another great season here at Deering Bay. We will be lowering the height of cut on the greens over the next couple of weeks to help speed up the greens and get us in great condition for the rest of the year. As always feel free to contact me anytime with any questions you might have at j.germana@dbycc.com and always remember to fix your ball marks and fill your divots.

Best regards, Jimmy Germana Director of Grounds

Max’s Wine of the Month

Willamette Valley Vineyards, Dijon Clone, Chardonnay, Willamette Valley, OR, 2016 On my visit to the Willamette Valley in May 2019, I knew that I was going to be enjoying some refreshing Pinot Gris and world class Pinot Noirs, but to my surprise I ended up falling in love with a new style of Chardonnay. It was only time before this vast growing region would undertake Chardonnay as the growing conditions are ideal for both Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. This wine displays notes of pineapple, honeydew and a citrus backdrop that moves onto a soft almost creamy finish. G: $12.50 | B: $45

Willamette Valley Vineyards, Estate, Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, OR, 2017 Walking through these vineyards & wineries in Oregon truly makes you understand why the juice in this bottle is so special. This Pinot Noir is a blend from three estate vineyards & it delivers balance & a great representation of the valley. This wine displays notes of raspberry, strawberry & an undertone of minerality that move onto mature tannins on the finish. G: $14 | B: $51 #dbycc #drinksonthebay #dbwinecellar
