A M E S S A G E FROM THE PRESIDENT & THE GENERAL MANAGER

A Steven Sonenreich President

s Deering Bay ushers in the fall season, we are still faced with a lot of unknowns. School has started, some students are in class, and some are taking classes remotely. When will our members who travel over the summer return for the season? How many more storms will we track before the end of hurricane season? When will the mayor be able to lift some of the sanctions due to COVID 19? When is the renovation going to start? All of these are great topics for discussion. The Club will continue to manage through all of this, to provide you, our members, with as many events and activities as possible. The Club staff is working on the event calendar for the remainder of 2020 and for 2021. It will contain as many of the regular events as we can handle, albeit some may be in different formats, and using placeholders for others. They are also using all their resources to uncover best practices from other Clubs for ideas that can be adapted to Deering Bay. In regard to the clubhouse renovation, we received a bit of a surprise setback at the end of August, with a denial on our final approval from the city of Coral Gables. Our architect, Troon Design & Development, JLL our project manager and Origin, our contractor spent the past few weeks addressing the issue and developing a plan to mitigate the issues outlined by the city. We resubmitted our revised plan the third week of September. The following week we had a meeting with city officials in the building department, with the principals from our project team, to review the submission. We are very optimistic that our permits will have been issued by the time you read this. The Club and contractor are ready to begin work as soon as the master permit is issued. More information will be coming out on the start dates, and the adjustments to Club operations for the membership. On the COVID 19 front, the environment appears to be improving. However, we continue to operate with the health and safety of our members and associates as our priority. We are six months into this pandemic and continue to be vigilant in regard to cleanliness and sanitation. Wearing masks, following social distancing, taking temperatures and restricting the Club to members only has proven to be helpful in creating our own ‘bubble’ and minimizing the opportunity for the spread of COVID 19 within our Club. We will follow CDC, Troon, Miami-Dade County guidelines and science in our approach in operating the club. It is a fluid situation and we will adjust accordingly. We are very encouraged in seeing more members in the dining rooms and outdoor eating areas every day, and expect to see more as the weather cools. Curbside dining is still a great option. At the last Board of Directors meeting, the guest policy was again discussed at length. It was

Questions on the F&B minimums, service charges and locker room/bag storage fees have been raised over the past few months. The Board has reviewed the questions at every Board meeting. Currently, bottled wine sales and most purchases in the Golf and Tennis Shops may be applied to your F&B minimum. You will be able to find information pertaining to these items further into the newsletter.

Peter Serena General Manager

We have been lucky with storms so far this year and await the end of hurricane season. Sally shut down our golf, tennis and pool for an entire weekend, but the overall impact was mostly heavy rain and strong winds before heading to the panhandle. A tip of the hat to the golf maintenance and tennis maintenance departments that were able to get the property reopened quickly. On the topic of club governance, the nominating committee is reviewing the applications for the upcoming election to the Board of Directors. Our next step will be candidate interviews with the nominating committee. That will be followed by the announcement of the candidates who will be on the ballot. This year, we intend to conduct our candidate speeches via Zoom on November 3, at 6 PM. All this culminates with the end of voting on December 1st and the election of your new Board members. The future of any Clubs rest with strong governance, and we thank those that have submitted applications to run for the Board and for their interest in being a part of this very important aspect. We, along with all of you, look forward to welcoming back our members returning from cooler climes and re-establishing the strong relationships we have within our member ranks. Sincerely,

Steven Sonenreich Peter J. Serena President General Manager

agreed that we would continue with our member’s only policy until the end of September and review it again at that time. Updates on that will most likely coincide with the publishing of this newsletter.

would like to start with a sincere gratitude to all of our members for the support during these ever challenging times. Our Deering Bay members proved over and over again how strong our community is. We are so happy to see things returning to normal and look forward to seeing all of you making memories and enjoying the season here at Deering Bay, your safe haven.

Daniella Tosta Membership Manager

Since the pandemic, we are glad to report that we have seen an increase in membership inquiries. During these times, here at Deering Bay, we have promoted our lifestyle and exemplified our safe haven, where families can continue to enjoy themselves knowing their safety is first. So far we have welcomed 11 families that have joined as Preview Members and are here to enjoy all the activities we have to offer. With that in mind, we encourage everyone to help a friend, family member, neighbor or colleague to discover Deering Bay. We are excited to start conducting some of our events again, incorporating the safety precautions required by the county and the CDC. We had a successful movie night in August where our Deering Bay kids and parents had the opportunity to enjoy themselves in a different environment outside of their home. Being that this was such a success, we are looking forward to hosting out first Adult’s Drive-In Movie Night. We want to give our adult members a chance for a night out where they can enjoy a movie in the safety of their own cart, or in one of ours. This will be a fun Halloween themed event, so grown ups, DRESS UP! And enjoy this R rated movie. The fun doesn’t stop there! We plan to have more events as we see feasible and we encourage you to check your emails and our website for the most up-todate flyers and social calendar information. Don’t forget to visit our Golf and Tennis Shop where you can purchase merchandise using your F&B minimum. Cheers to a successful start to a new season. Let’s Go Heat! Please congratulate...

GERI BRODIE who is the winner of the “Membership Ambassador Raffle” for the Months of October. Geri Brodie, thank you for your referral. he cool fall weather is right around the corner, and the heat will taper off soon, which indicates a new season is upon us. With member rounds on the rise it gives me great hope for an active tournament season that promises to be memorable. In the next few months, the golf calendar is a busy one so please check out the Calendar of Events 2020-21 online or in the Golf Shop. Once again we are pleased to use Golf Genius, a web based entry process that will ease the entering or withdrawing process for events. Of course, entering by phone or stopping by the Golf Shop to enter is always available. We are extremely excited about the condition of the golf course and we anticipate increased participation in all events. I would like to welcome our new members to come out to enjoy the prime golf course conditions and sign up early to secure your place in all our golf activities. A N O T E FROM TENNIS

T

he heat is dwindling, but sweat is still dripping with intense tennis competition from the green clay of Deering Bay to the hard courts of the US Open. Naomi Osaka displayed her power and Dominic Thiem dominated as the hard court king. Both won the title with well-deserved wins against the best players in the world.

Pedro Leon Tennis Director

However impressive, Naomi and Thiem are not the only two making a mark in the wonderful world of tennis, our USTA and SFWDL teams have been preparing impressively for their respective seasons and our tennis program is filled in lessons and clinics. October is building up to be a great month. For our ladies, we have the start of their season. A lot of SFWDL and USTA matches will be played during the month, and all of our clinics and lessons will continue to do great. Therefore, we would like to thank all the members for supporting our tennis program. For clinics, events, merchandise sales, and more of the tennis program please keep a look out for flyers, e-blasts or contact the tennis pro shop. We would like to wish everyone a happy tennis season and we look forward to seeing new and familiar faces alike.

Sincerely, Pedro Leon Director of Tennis

A M E S S A G E FROM THE F&B DIRECTOR

A Nicholas Perusina Food & Beverage Director

s we begin to welcome fall and temperatures begin to dip into the mid-70’s (brrr), we are also excited to welcome a new fall menu from our new Executive Chef, Jon Cowan. This menu will have more options to satisfy a wide range of appetites and cravings. We have focused on including trendier and healthier options and a more attractive range in pricing. We will be rolling out this new menu on October 13, so be sure to call in your order or come in and dine with us as we continue to practice social distancing, temperature checks, and regular sanitation practices in and around the restaurant. Additionally on October 13, we will be adjusting our dining hours for the fall schedule. You will find the Club’s fall hours elsewhere in this issue of On The Bay. Even though dine in services have resumed in Miami-Dade county; we are still seeing a huge business from our curbside pick-up, and appreciate the opportunity to continue to serve our members in this fashion. While many members still feel safer staying at home rather than going out, we have seen continued success in our monthly Bar in a Box feature. In addition, we also began a Craft in a Box for kids in September that had great feedback, and allowed kids to practice a new hobby and were able to make a keepsake for them to enjoy. Again, a special “Shanah Tovah” to all of our members that chose to spend Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur with us in September, it was a great turnout and we received a lot of amazing feedback for both our Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur menu. Looking forward, I am happy to announce that we will be bringing back Pasta Nights on Thursday evenings beginning October 22 from 6PM – 8:30 PM. Chef Jon has taken a lot of the items from the previous Pasta Nights and added some new additions that are sure to elevate the experience. We will offer a pasta action station where one of our skilled culinarians will prepare madeto-order pasta dishes with your choice of ingredients. We will also have a server-attended buffet that will offer you a range of traditional Italian dishes, including vegetarian options, as well as salads and house-made desserts. We will continue vetting out new and improved ways to bring back the familiar food and beverage offerings that existed prior to the pandemic. Until then, we look forward to seeing you either in our dining rooms, or pulling up the front drive.

Cheers! Nick Perusina Director of Food & Beverage OCTOBER 2020 • 14
