Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium, home of Widener’s football team since 1994, is in its ninth year as home of our men’s and women’s soccer programs. The move was made following the installment of a new FieldTurf surface in 2005. The stadium also had a new scoreboard installed and the locker rooms were refurbished that year. Seating for over 4,000 spectators is available. The stadium also serves as home for Widener’s conference championship men’s lacrosse and track & field squads.

COACHING STAFF

Brian Sheehan • Head Coach Brian Sheehan is in his eighth season as Widener’s women’s soccer coach. The program has enjoyed immense success during his time with five straight seasons posting double-digit wins from 2006-10 and with solid returnees hopes to start a new run. A 14-6-1 record in 2007 fashioned a second consecutive trip to both the Commonwealth Conference and ECAC South Tournaments. The Pride hosted an ECAC Tournament game and ended one victory shy of tying the school record. The 2008 season saw Widener close second in the league and host a conference tournament game for just the second time in school history. The year also saw him become the program’s winningest coach with his 35th triumph, a 3-0 victory at Lebanon Valley on October 18. Sheehan enjoyed a solid five-year run at Rutgers-Camden, recording a 51-31-10 record from 2000-04. He averaged over 11 wins a season his final three years, including a 12-6-2 mark in 2004 in which his team established school records with 65 goals and 188 points. That group saw one of its players named second team CoSIDA Academic All-America. The 2003 squad was one which made great progress, notching a program-best 13-4-3 record to clinch the school’s first appearance in the New Jersey Athletic Conference Tournament. Rutgers-Camden defeated two ranked schools that season (The College of New Jersey and Richard Stockton). The Lady Raptors in 2002 posted a 10-6-3 mark, advancing to the ECAC Metro Tournament for the program’s first postseason appearance.

Sheehan arrived at RU-Camden following one year at Paul VI High School in Haddonfield, NJ. His 1999 squad won the South Jersey Parochial A championship, closing with a 20-2-2 record. Paul VI was named the Philadelphia Inquirer Team of the Year as well as the Camden Courier Post Cup champions. Sheehan was tabbed Coach of the Year by the Philadelphia Inquirer. Prior to serving as an assistant coach at RU-Camden in 1998, Sheehan’s first collegiate head coaching job took place at Gloucester County College from 1996-97. He guided the 1997 team to the Region 19 Tournament for the first time in school annals. Sheehan also coached Bishop Eustace High School from 1993-95, earning Philadelphia Inquirer honors as Coach of the Year in 1994.

Assistant Coaches

Art Staerk is in his eighth season as an assistant coach with the Pride. No stranger to working with head coach Brian Sheehan, Staerk served four seasons as an assistant at Rutgers-Camden from 2001-04. That included the Lady Raptors first appearances in the ECAC Metro Tournament in 2002 and the New Jersey Athletic Conference Tournament in 2003. Staerk since 1996 has served as head coach of the Willingboro Terror, a U-18 girls’ squad. The team has won multiple championships in the South Jersey Soccer League and in 2003 captured the NJ State Cup. He also guided the U-19 Willingboro Nomads boys’ team from 1991-2001, winning nine conference titles over 11 years. Staerk also led the South Jersey Select All-Star U-14 girls’ team in 2002 and coached the NJ ODP girls’ U-16 squad in South Jersey. He holds a national “D” license from the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) and an advanced diploma from the NSCAA. Sam Baer, coming off a phenomenal career with the Pride, is in her fourth year as an assistant coach for her alma mater. Baer proved her versatility by being named All-Commonwealth Conference four times at three different positions. She was second team all-league as a defender in 2006, first team all-conference as a forward in 2007 and first team as a midfielder the last two years. Baer also was second team All-Mid Atlantic Region in 2008 and third team in 2009. Named Widener’s Female Athlete of the Year in 2010, Baer graduated first in school history with 40 assists, second with 29 goals and second with 98 points. She graduated in 2010 with a degree in Psychology. Rochele Jacobs is in her second year as an assistant coach for the Pride. She will be working primarily with the goalkeepers. Jacobs competed four years in goal, helping Widener reach both the Commonwealth Conference and ECAC Tournaments her first two seasons. Jacobs graduated Widener in 2011 with a degree in Education.

PREVIEW Widener’s women’s soccer team has plenty to prove as it embarks on the 2013 season. The squad looks to rebound from a tough campaign with many players back in the fold in a season that will be highlighted by yet another trip to PPL Park. With any good team comes great goalscores and the Pride have that in seniors Karen Thomas and Kelly Buckley. Thomas battled back from injury last season to play a huge role on the team, closing eighth in the Commonwealth Conference with 20 points, tied for ninth with seven goals and tied for sixth with six assists. Buckley also has been a key asset for the squad and this showed after ending first on the team with 41 shots and tied for first with two game-winning goals. Another senior who again looks to be a major factor is Victoria Batter, owner of the first collegiate goal in PPL Park history. She looks for the same form from her freshman campaign that enabled to close with five goals. Junior Jenna Pedrick has been a two-year starter for the Pride at midfield and hopes to bump her goal total from the two she netted a season ago. Junior Nicole Foschini transfered last season from Catawba College to try and win a spot at midfield and did just that. She tied for third on the team with seven points after being one of three on the squad to start all 17 matches. The senior brigade also gets a lift from defender Amanda Doran, whose determination and will have made her a very important part of the backline. Fellow senior defender Julia Flower also is a key member for the Pride and seeks to receive more than the 11 starts she had a season ago. Senior Olivia Yoh has fought through numerous injuries up top to earn a spot on the team. She once again will battle to get on the field to try and better the four goals she scored as a freshman in 2010. Experience in goal is vital for any team and in senior Valarie Perretti, Widener has someone who has put together three strong years. Now as the number one goalie, Perretti steps into a role she should feel very comfortable after notching an .852 save percentage and a 1.21 goals against average. Juniors Jaclyn Miller, Gina Scotto and Martha Lowitz are back to provide some punch at forward. Juniors Casey Pelican and Ashley Petrosky hope to get plenty of playing time at midfield. Stephanie Dickinson will be counted on in a big way on defense. The co-captain started 16 contests last season and should be even more of a factor. Olivia Pfautz get the call as the number two goalkeeper, but should see extended playing time this season. A solid player who saw limited action last season as a freshman, her time on the pitch is expected to go up this season thanks to her great hands. Alyssa Knox seeks more playing time at forward and fellow sophomores Stephanie Garrison and Brae McQuade look for the same on defense. The Pride bring in seven newcomers in Rebecca McAllister, Brittany Allison, Erica McDonough, Gabriela Faux, Paige Haggerty, Ashley Rundell and Elyssa Duckett. Widener opens the season August 30 at Cabrini and the home opener is September 3 vs. Swarthmore. League play commences October 5 at Alvernia and the regular season ends November 2 at Elizabethtown in the squads’ final meeting as conference opponents. The top five teams compete in the conference tournament from November 5-9.
