COACHING STAFF

Larissa Gillespie • Head Coach In her 15th season as Widener’s field hockey head coach and 21st with the program, Larissa Gillespie has accomplished a great deal at her alma mater and her student-athletes have accomplished a great deal both on the field and in the classroom. It is through these values she has instilled that have helped the program continue to be successful every year. Gillespie owns a 132-108 mark during her time, which includes five straight years with at least 10 victories (2003-07). The Pride in 2006 broke the school record for most victories (13) and advanced to the ECAC MidAtlantic Tournament for their first postseason berth. They followed with a 12-5 campaign, playing some of the nation’s top teams. September 21, 2006 will go down as an historic night for Gillespie, who notched her 64th victory to become the program’s all-time winningest coach in Widener’s 5-1 triumph over Neumann. Since Gillespie has been with the field hockey program, numerous school records have been established. The 2001 squad notched its first winning record since 1992 and the 2003 team played in the Commonwealth Conference Tournament for the first of back-to-back years. Under Gillespie’s leadership in 2006, Kate Heritage was picked first team all-region and Jaime Carr was tabbed second team. It marked the first time the team produced all-region players. Carr in 2007 also was named the Philadelphia Inquirer Field Hockey Performer of the Year, based on academic and athletic excellence. Heritage was selected to play in the Senior All-Star Game that same year. That tradition continued in 2013 when Nicole Nardone, a two-time second team all-conference pick and 2011 member of the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic Honor Roll, received the President’s Award for being the student who “contributed the most to campus life through scholarship and participation in extra-curricular activities.” Maggie Karmeris added to that list last fall when she was tabbed Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-America and to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic Honor Roll. In addition, 13 players have been named first team all-conference during her time and 27 have been tabbed second team. During Gillespie’s time, Widener has had at least one student-athlete on the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Teams eight of the last nine years (2005-11, 2013). Assistant Coaches

Erica Crell is in her third year as an assistant coach for Widener. She has been instrumental for the team in recruiting some of the area’s top athletes and also is responsible for breaking down game tape. Crell will continue to work with the defense and goalkeepers this season. She served four years as an assistant coach at Delaware, working with the goalkeepers and also scouting opponents. Crell helped the Blue Hens win the Colonial Athletic Association crown in 2009 and compete in the NCAA Tournament. She also was a goalkeeping consultant at Lebanon Valley from 2003-2007, an assistant at Princeton in 2003 and worked with the USFHA Future’s Program from 1998-2009. She is Level 2 certified through U.S. Field Hockey. Crell played her first two seasons at Old Dominion before finishing at Rutgers. Leslie Kelly is in her fourth year as an assistant coach for the Pride. Among her duties include dissecting game tape and helping in recruiting, both of which have proved vital for the program. She will continue in her role of working with the defense and the goalkeepers. Kelly was a member of Rutgers’ field hockey team for three seasons. She competed in eight games in 2007, playing just over 550 minutes and totaling 49 saves with a .731 save percentage. Kelly served as the goalkeeper’s coach in 2010 for the Revolution Field Hockey Winter Clinic, the Competitor’s Edge Field Hockey Camp in 2009 and the Rutgers Field Hockey Camp from 2007-08. Kelly was a highly decorated athlete for Glassboro High School in field hockey, softball and track & field. She was tabbed All-Group II in field hockey, leading Glassboro to the 2005 South Jersey Group II crown.

PREVIEW Widener’s field hockey team over its 42-year lineage has seen a great deal of talented student-athletes who have accomplished plenty both on the field and in the classroom grace the campus. The 2014 roster provides more of the same as the team embarks on what should be another successful campaign. One who embraces the true meaning of student-athlete is senior goalkeeper Maggie Karmeris, who already has put together an impressive resume with a year still remaining. The high-water mark of her run to date came last spring, when she was named third team Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-America. The accolades before that also have been impressive in being picked a Scholar of Distinction by the coaches association, named to the Middle Atlantic Conference Academic All-Conference Team and to the MAC Academic Honor Roll. Karmeris on the field closed fifth in the Commonwealth Conference with 5.94 saves per game, totaling 107 saves for a .754 save percentage. Ashley Aires had a strong sophomore campaign last year at midfield and defense in which she was picked second team all-conference. She brings a lot to the table whether it is her play making or her defensive saves, both talents of which will be extremely valuable this year. Another midfielder who offers a great deal is sophomore Dana Adamson, who exploded on the scene last season at midfield. Giving the Pride a great deal of options, she had a team-high four defensive saves last year and showed a great deal of promise with her ability to create plays. Widener has plenty of talent back in the fold at midfield with sophomores Meghan McLaughlin and Laura Fitzsimmons each seeking to be major factors. The defense returns sophomore Alyssa Buckley, who saw playing time a year ago and hopes it increases this season. Sophomore Colleen Riley played in 18 contests a season ago with seven starts and should 2014 Home Games get even more time this season at forward. Sophomore Brittany Lavin also looks to be a factor Sat. Sept. 6 Swarthmore Noon this season at forward. Tue.
