COACHING STAFF
Brent Jacquette • Head Coach Widener men’s soccer coach Brent Jacquette, in his sixth year, has built a strong culture and a great team environment that has the squad knocking on the door in hopes of its first Commonwealth Conference title. The return of many talented players who continue to make positive strides has helped Jacquette put the squad in a great spot. The Pride in 2012 closed one goal short of making the conference tournament, ending 4-4-1 in the league, and went 7-9-2 overall that included 6-1-1 stretch midway through the year. Jacquette took over after serving two seasons as an assistant. The 2008 campaign was a magical one as the Pride upset top-seeded Lebanon Valley in the conference semifinals and competed in the ECAC South Tournament. The nine victories were the most since the 2004 squad picked up 10. Jacquette also has had a huge role with Soccer for Success, a free after-school program that uses soccer as a tool to address children’s health issues and juvenile delinquency while promoting healthy lifestyles in urban under-served communities. His effort helped him in 2014 to be named the Philadelphia Union’s nominee for the MLS WORKS Community MVP Contest.
The Wallingford, PA native competed in the United Soccer Leagues with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds in 2003 and the Minnesota Thunder in 2004. Jacquette holds a USSF “A” License and an NSCAA Premier Diploma. Jacquette also enjoyed a successful collegiate playing career, being named All-America and two-time All-Big Ten Conference defender at Penn State. He was tabbed a Collegiate MVP by Soccer America in 2002 and was selected to participate in the Major League Soccer combine in 2003. He was a four-year starter and a captain, graduating in fewer than four years with a B.A. in Telecommunications in December 2002. Jacquette’s wealth of experience also includes training with FC St. Pauli in Germany. He founded Get Ahead Soccer, which developed youth soccer programs, camps and clinics, and organized the staff to conduct training sessions. Jacquette also was a co-director of sports operations at Tri State Sports, helping develop a marketing plan for youth leagues and overseeing scheduling, staffing and billing of the complex. He also worked as a region manager at Time Warner, overseeing magazine sales in five states.
Assistant Coaches Jesse Zafiratos is in his fourth season as an assistant coach for the Pride. His main roles and responsibilities include all aspects of recruiting, game day scouting reports, working with the forwards in training and all day to day operations of the soccer program. He has coached seven all-conference selections so far for the Pride. Collegiately, he competed at Kutztown University and La Roche College. In 47 games at La Roche, he tallied 59 career points. As a junior in 2004, he scored 10 goals and helped the Redhawks to their first home Allegheny Mountain Conference Tournament appearance. As a senior in 2006, he led the team in assists and served as a team captain. He graduated from La Roche in 2006 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education. Zafiratos coaches a U-12 elite boys team for the prestigious West Chester United Soccer Club, whom most recently won the 2013 Delco Soccer League Championship. He possesses his USSF “C” License, and has worked numerous college camps at West Chester, Rider, Widener, Gettysburg, Swarthmore and La Roche among others. He also is involved with the Soccer For Success Program at Widener.
Matt Poole is in his fourth year as an assistant coach for Widener. Poole in 2010 was a volunteer assistant coach at Drexel. He also has coached youth teams in Nether Providence and has his NSCAA national diploma. Poole was a four-year player at Virginia, starting 78 of the 83 games he played in. He helped the Cavaliers reach the national semifinals in 2006 and was named to the Atlantic Coast Conference All-Tournament Team in 2008. He also was named first team all-state by the Virginia Sports Information Directors and participated in the 2009 Major League Soccer Combine. Ben Diller is in his first season as an assistant coach for Widener. He arrives after serving last year as an assistant at Central Dauphin High School in Harrisburg, where the team went 9-7-1 and missed the district playoffs by one game. Diller played collegiately at Alvernia from 2009-12 as the team’s No. 1 goalkeeper his junior and senior years. As a junior, he helped the Crusaders to their best record and was tabbed first team All-Commonwealth Conference as well as second team All-Mid-Atlantic Region. The team lost in the conference final to Messiah and in the ECAC South semifinals to Swarthmore. As a senior, he was picked second team all-league and led Alvernia to the ECAC South championship. Diller finished his career as the Crusaders’ record holder in shutouts and goals against average, is second in saves and third in save percentage.

PREVIEW The roster for Widener’s 2014 men’s soccer program displays a great deal of talented players who are yearning to once again make a difference. The unit has a wealth of potential and are on the verge of breaking through in the Commonwealth Conference. One of the key factors returning is junior Tori Remondelli, who last season was tabbed second team all-conference. One of the conference’s premier midfielders and one who has had a greater role on the team with each passing season, the Point Pleasant, NJ native is coming off a solid campaign in which he ended with seven goals and 17 points. Junior Zac Furia also returns seeking to once again make a difference at midfield. One of three returnees who started every game last season, Furia always has made an impact both on and off the stat sheet. He closed last year tied for first on the team with four assists and tied for third with eight points. Fellow junior Eric Taylor played an even bigger role a season ago in the starting lineup at midfield and it paid off with four assists and eight points. Junior Eric Bihlear also returns at midfield and his amazing throw-in ability once again should be a key factor for the squad. Juniors Ross Staudt, Kyle Lynch and Grant Shaffer also are back in the fold is hopes of once again providing the midfield with solid play. Sophomores Tommy O’Keefe, Zach Hill and CJ Patterson also look to bolster the midfield. Senior Troy Czapor, an Honorable Mention all-league pick in 2012, started all 19 matches last year and should be another key factor for the Pride in 2014. He hopes to once again regain the form that helped him attain 13 points two season ago. Junior Malik Krcic has blossomed his first two years, making 34 starts in that span, and seeks to increase his progress this season. Senior Sumo Yarkpawolo, juniors Max Spencer, Steve Yarosh, Kyle Lynch and Alec DelConte along with sophomore Austin Sosnow also are back and ready to go this season. The graduation of all-conference goalkeeper Jakub Valdner, who played every minute the past two seasons, leaves the door wide open for his replacement. Sophomores Dave Sousa and Jonathan Rouse are the leading candidates 2014 Home Games hoping to nab that coveted role. Fri.
