COACHING STAFF

Todd Wawrousek • Head Coach Todd Wawrousek has built quite a resume as a coach on multiple levels and now has a chance to add to that in being picked the new women’s soccer coach at Widener University. Wawrousek was the women’s soccer coach 17 seasons (1990-2006) at Gettysburg, leading the squad in its greatest run in school history. In compiling a 195-108-19 mark, he led the Bullets to seven NCAA Tournament appearances, two ECAC Tournament trips and five Centennial Conference titles. Wawrousek also in that stretch coached eight All-Americas, three Academic All-Americas and six Centennial Conference Players of the Year. Along with the aforementioned academic success, Wawrousek’s teams consistently notched between a 3.0-3.35 GPA during his time. That will fit right in with Widener, which has been presented the NSCAA Team Academic Award the last three years for having at least a 3.0 team GPA and last fall had 15 student-athletes named to the Middle Atlantic Conference Fall Academic Honor Roll. Wawrousek, a three-time regional Coach of the Year and the 1992 Centennial Conference Coach of the Year, also served 11 years on the

NSCAA All-America Committee and seven on the NSCAA Rating Committee. Wawrousek also was an assistant coach for Vancouver Whitecaps FC of the United Soccer League. He handled all first-team logistics, had a hand in the selection of new players on a global level, helped with video analysis, worked with community and corporate organizations, and helped in speaking engagements. The squad won the USL First Division North America title in 2008, made the final in 2009 and advanced to the quarterfinals in 2007. He also was the director of coaching for the Philadelphia Union of Major League Soccer since 2012, managing a staff of 12 coaches in a training program designed for players ages 9-13. Wawrousek also was the head coach of the Pennsylvania Classic Football Club since 2010, coaching three teams that included the U13 and U17 elite squads. Wawrousek coached FC Delco Force in Downingtown from 199397, was an Olympic Development coach in Eastern Pennsylvania from 1990-95 and served as an assistant coach with the Hershey Wildcats football team from 1997-2001. Wawrousek received his B.S. in Education from Millersville in 1987 and his M.S. in Education from Alfred in 1990.

Assistant Coaches Jillian Loydon is in her first season as an assistant coach for the Pride. Loydon has been a goalkeeper of the United States Women’s National Team since 2010 and also has played in both the Women’s Professional Soccer league and the National Women’s Soccer League. She is a member of Sky Blue FC and also has competed for St. Louis Athletics, the Chicago Red Stars and magicJack. Loydon was on the roster for the United States silver-medal squad at the 2011 Women’s World Cup and was an alternate for the gold medal team at the 2012 Olympics. She also competed for the Central Coast Mariners in Australia’s W-League and was tabbed the 2009 Goalkeeper of the Year. Loydon played four years at Villanova, where she was named NSCAA first team All-America and became the first player in Big East Conference history picked Goalkeeper of the Year three times. She served two seasons as the goalkeeping coach at Drew University and was the goalkeeping coach for FC Pennsylvania Strikers. Chris DePeppe is in his first year as an assistant coach for Widener. He arrives after serving as coach and trainer for the Montgomery United U-17 and U-15 Elite Club Teams since 2013. DePeppe also served an assistant coach and head trainer for the men’s soccer team at North Penn High School from 2011-13. He sports a US Soccer National “C” License, has been an instructor at YSC Summer Camps and has been an ODP coach. DePeppe also served as a coach and trainer with the Philadelphia Union Summer Select team this summer. He was a four-year player at Penn State and competed for both the Philadelphia Freedom in the USISL and the New Jersey Nationals in the NYC Hellenic League. DePeppe graduated Penn State in 1988 with a B.A. in English and Journalism.

PREVIEW Widener’s women’s soccer team went into last season having something to prove. Having accomplished that, the 2014 outfit now looks to show it can remain one of the region’s elite and build on the success from last season. The 2013 campaign was an impeccable one for the Pride (14-3-3, 4-3-2 CC) that came as no surprise to those on the inside. The squad amassed an 11-game winning streak, a 12-game unbeaten run, a six-game shutout streak and 12 shutouts that all set school records. It tied the school record with nine home victories and recorded at least 11 overall wins for the sixth time in eight seasons. Now a new era begins with Todd Wawrousek taking over as head coach. Entering with a wealth of experience from his days at Gettysburg and in Major League Soccer, Wawrousek has plenty in the cupboard remaining from last season’s historic unit and looks to continue that this year. One of the key players back in the mix is senior center back Stephanie Dickinson, who controls the defense and had as much to do with last season’s shutout numbers as anyone. A fiery competitor who was one of seven for the Pride to start all 20 games last season, the Honorable Mention All-Commonwealth Conference pick once again will be looked at this year to help a solid back line. Senior Martha Lowitz returns on defense looking to once again play an even bigger role this season. She also started all 20 matches in 2013 and looks to continue that streak this year. Juniors Brae McQuade and Stephanie Garrison are back looking to provide solid minutes for the defense. Senior Jenna Pedrick had an immense impact at forward last year by ending second on the squad with seven goals and third with 20 points. A solid playmaker with great intuition and a remarkable ability to make everyone around her better, the Sicklerville, NJ product gives her all every time she steps foot on the pitch and hopes to finally get some all-league recognition. The graduation of Karen Thomas and Kelly Buckley leaves two valuable spots open at forward. Seniors Jaclyn Miller and Gina Scotto each look to provide minutes in those roles along with junior Alyssa Knox and sophomore Paige Haggerty. The midfield last year played a key role and once again returns solid players. Promising junior Nicole Foschini returns from a tough injury on opening day last year and will give the midfield plenty of stability with her tough play and keen soccer smarts. Sophomore Erica McDonough started all 20 games last season and important cog in the machine. She also attempted 13 shots last year and can be interchangeable for this solid unit. Senior Casey Pelican made 16 starts a year ago over 18 contests and will be in the mix for playing time this season. Seniors Ashley Petrosky and Angelique Matusz also return looking for more time on the pitch. The goalkeeper spot is open with the graduation of Valarie Perretti, who last season played 98 percent of the team’s minutes. Junior Olivia Pfautz has showed a great deal of potential her first two years and is poised to step into the number one role. Sophomore Ashley Rundell also looks to grab the top spot. The Pride bring in eight newcomers in Brooke Palmieri, Brittany Carroll, Lara Houck, Lauren Wilson, Eva Reyes, Karli Luker, Kelliann Burns and Margot Coates. Widener’s 20th season begins August 30 at Swarthmore and the home opener is September 6 vs. Washington (MD). League play starts October 4 at Messiah. The top five teams take part in the Commonwealth Conference Tournament from November 3-8.

Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium, home of Widener’s football team since 1994, is in its 10th year as home of our men’s and women’s soccer programs. The move was made following the installment of a new FieldTurf surface in 2005. The stadium also had a new scoreboard installed and the locker rooms were refurbished that year. Seating for over 4,000 spectators is available. The stadium also serves as home for Widener’s conference championship men’s lacrosse and track & field squads.
