HONDA TALON TACKLES SPORT SXS MARKET “In 2013 we laid out our plans to get into the Sidex-Side market and how we were going to stepby-step get into multi-purpose machines, build a firm foundation with product and technology and also planning for other categories,” explains Chuck Boderman, Vice President of American Honda’s Powersports Division.“ Honda may have been late to the party when it comes to the performance side-by-side segment, but they are definitely making up for lost time! Just six months after rolling out the Talon 1000X and 1000R, Honda doubled up, literally. Wraps came off two brand new 4-seater Sport Side-x-Sides at the Power Lab 2019 dealer event in early June. “At this point we have just had our 4-wheeled experiential meeting and being able to share the progress we have made together over the past 6 years with our dealer network has been really exciting and impressive,” says Boderman. “We have grown that foundation in our multipurpose sales channel dramatically by 600%! Now, having released the 2P and the 4P Talons, along with the Fox Live Valve technology, this has set the foundation for our Sport category sideby-side.”

Top dealers were brought to the TexPlex facility in Midlothian, Texas, to see first hand the launch of the 4P Talon, experience the Fox Live Valve technology and put the 2P Talons through their paces on a couple of courses to truly experience the difference between the X and the R designations. “While we are doing this, we are letting out our plans for the next three years, through 2021 in order to build on that Sport foundation and also reinforcing our multipurpose foundation and ATVs,” Boderman adds. “Over the next few years we are going to be looking back saying we have a good foundation but we are still going strong… there are several other new introductions planned between now and 2021 across Side-x-Side and ATVs,” he hints. “That is the really significant part for our dealers, we are growing together and we are looking in that direction to keep that growth strong.” “Since the two-seat Talon models hit the market a few months ago, it’s been fun to see how ready customers were for a sport sideby-side touting Honda’s legendary refinement, durability and performance,” adds Chris Cox, Honda’s Experiential Marketing/Public Relations

For the past seven years, Benelli importer SSR Motorsports has utilized the AIMExpo as the platform to launch new models of the Italian designed, QJ-made Benelli street bikes. The annual list maps out unique, somewhat unexpected locales from around the world worth traveling to in the coming year. For the 2019 list Columbus ranked number 47, just one of the 10 U.S. cities to make the cut this year. While locals know what an amazing place Columbus is to visit and live, it’s exciting to see this national recognition. Here is why NYT rates Columbus so highly: With a revitalized riverfront and booming downtown, Columbus is already one of the nation’s fastest-growing cities. HARLEY-DAVIDSON’S VISION FOR 2020 More Roads To The Future The vision for 2020 is focused on “new models, new technologies and more customer choices,” according to Harley-Davidson. Everything from prototype eBikes and the official launch of the STACYC-sourced balance bikes for kids to more traditional CVO offerings and the new Low Rider S model were presented to the faithful at the dealer meeting in Milwaukee. The new models and advanced technologies are components of the “More Roads To HarleyDavidson” initiative intended to accelerate building the next generation of riders through new products in additional motorcycle segments, broader access and a commitment to strengthen dealers globally. “Harley-Davidson offers riders a host of new models, gear and accessories for 2020 as we leverage our unmatched ability to blend style, performance and technology in products designed to elevate the motorcycling experience,” said Chief Marketing Officer Heather Malenshek. “This year Harley-Davidson offers more choices for more riders than ever before.” Propelled by the immediate torque of the H-D Revelation electric powertrain, the LiveWire is capable of rapid acceleration with just a twist of the throttle – no clutching or shifting required. With up to 146 miles of range, performance is optimized for the urban street-rider. The LiveWire model is the first in a broad portfolio of electric two-wheelers designed to establish HarleyDavidson as the leader in the electrification of motorcycles.

The Low Rider S takes a performance-first approach that emphasizes power, agile handling and enhanced rider control combined with traditional Harley-Davidson character, according to Malenshek. “Handling of the Softail chassis is enhanced by premium suspension components tuned for aggressive riding stoked by the power of a muscular Milwaukee-Eight 114 engine. Styling cues from the coastal build scene include a raised handlebar, mini fairing, solo seat and blacked-out finishes.” For the traditionalists, the Heritage Classic “drapes the Softail platform in pure nostalgia.” It has been completely re-styled for 2020, going from the blacked-out look of the previous model to bright finishes for riders who prefer the bling of rich Harley-Davidson chrome. A chrome air cleaner and covers; chrome steel laced wheels; chrome headlamp bucket and auxiliary light buckets, bright fork legs and chrome fork covers and nacelle; chrome rear fender struts and side covers; a chrome console; a polished stainless steel handlebar with a chrome riser and top clamp; and a full clear windscreen with chrome support hardware. The Heritage Classic is mechanically identical to the 2019 model. Features include lockable and sealed hard saddlebags, a detachable windscreen, a two-piece skirted seat and pillion with black studs, and standard cruise control and Antilock Braking System (ABS). Color options include: Vivid Black, Billiard Burgundy, two-tone Silver Pine/Spruce and Billiard Red/Vivid Black. The Heritage Classic 114 model powered by the Milwaukee-Eight 114 engine will retain the model’s original, blacked-out look.

Vanderhall Speedster Run To The Super Bloom By Alisa Clickenger, Photos by Jen Muecke

Is it an automobile or a motorcycle? Neither one... and both, its an autocycle says Jeff Whaley, VP of Sales & Operations for the Utah-based OEM. We asked him to demystify Vanderhall’s product positioning, however nothing is as convincing as butts on seats, so we jumped at the chance to put the new Speedster through its paces in a run from Malibu to Temecula Wine country during the Super Bloom.

Full disclosure: I do not own a car, only motorcycles. I don’t get to drive regularly, so I was a little intimidated by the Speedster. It being so low to the ground, I was worried that I would do some irreparable damage to it because I was out of driving practice. Turns out piloting of the Vanderhall was not nearly as intimidating as I had made it out to be in my head... in fact, it was the opposite: the wind-up of the turbo activated some primordial part of my cortex. I can only blame the Speedster for what happened once I left my neighborhood in the dust.

Heading up and over the mountains and down to the Pacific Ocean, the handling on the machine is so tight and responsive that once I gave the bump shifting a go, let’s just say that there was a lot of laughing out loud and shouting into the wind. I wanted the cool look of a leather flying helmet and split frame goggles (and a fancy silk scarf to stream behind me)! I was so enthralled with the ride, I barely remember to stop and smell the Super Bloom!

The Vanderhall Venice Speedster is as much fun as you can have on three wheels! One seat, three wheels, four cylinders. It kept me smiling from start to finish. When I finally left the congested suburban town center and its gawking crowds, I opened up the Speedster’s throttle and gave out an exhilarated giggle. The wind whipped my hair around my face, every little tap of locks to skin a sharp reminder of the bliss of open-air motoring. I didn’t quite realize how much I was smiling until my cheeks started to hurt. ~ Julia La Palme, Road & Track

The real breakthrough here is the way it attracts grownups, not just kids. Of course, some states still think of three-wheelers like this as motorcycles, so your DMV might tell you that you must have a motorcycle rider’s license and wear a helmet. But some 28 states now recognize the “autocycle,” which is legally categorized as an automobile. As soon as you snap your goggles in place and take the wood-rim steering wheel in your hands, you know this is really all about a classic driving experience, where the number of wheels on your car is way less important than the number of bugs on your teeth. ~ Michael Jordan, Automobile

What started as a project in former mountain-bike and kart racer Andrew Davidge’s parent’s basement has evolved into a serious quest to blend innovation, imagination and technology. “We joke about it internally, but it really is true to a certain extent: We build e-bikes for car guys,” says Vintage Electric Founder and Lead Designer Andrew Davidge. Like many of the pedal-based platforms, Davidge found himself at odds with bicycle purists and IBDs (Independent Bicycle Dealers), who refuse to stock eBikes. However, the laid-back Santa Clara, California, entrepreneur is now ready to scale up the operation. That’s where powersports dealers come in… and the fact that the Vintage Electric team has always thought of their bikes as “motor” cycles rather than e-bicycles anyway. “I have always loved motorcycles, and the vibe at a good shop can’t be beat,” says Davidge. “My daily transportation is a Ducati.” Vintage Electric says that its pedal-assist Café and

Rally models are three times as powerful as their direct competitors. The standard 750-watt rear hub motor powers these pedal-assist bikes up to a top speed of 28 mph. On the throttle-model Vintage Electric Tracker, Scrambler and Roadster, the optional “race mode” upgrade to the 1,123-wattmotored throttle bumps output to 3,000 watts and is good for speeds up to 36 mph. The 48-volt lithium battery, Vintage Electric’s most powerful, is enclosed in the company’s signature aluminum battery box that looks like an old Whizzer engine to us (Google it, kids). motorcycle racing was one of the purest and most visceral examples of the relentless pursuit of speed. We’d like to think that our bikes channel that spirit.” The pedal-assist Café model starts at $3,995, with its gravel-grinder-inspired Rally sibling starting at $4,995. The Vintage Electric throttle models with the “big bore” motor (no derailleur/gears to shift) begin with the nostalgic Tracker at $4,995 and advance to the knobby-tired Scrambler and sportscar-inspired Roadster, both with an MSRP of $6,995. …And the thing looks cool, too, wearing a slick coat of automotive silver and crowned with that elegant motorcycle-like, vintage-inspired headlamp. “This was our third dealer experiential event. When we started these, we wanted to be able to create an atmosphere and environment where we could get groups of dealers together to have really good facet time with American Honda and network together to learn about product, experiences the product and talk about business. We wanted this to be on a more intimate level, not just another giant dealer meeting. We worked hard at the first two session to create a full blown Power Lab. The whole idea is to bring in waves of dealers, have some business conversations in what we are calling our Power Lab sessions.” That explains the lab coats being worn by the presenters in the Power Lab “salons” — break out sessions to explain the technology, P,G&A and even outside vendors. “We have these vendors here for our dealers to learn from, network with and build relationships with… everything from internally with Honda South Carolina manufacturing personnel to R&D from Ohio, Honda Motor R&D from Japan, to

outside vendors like CDK . Part of our connected dealer initiative is to really start to improve the efficiency of how we do business with the dealer and American Honda with this great dealer management system. It has a mode for everyone including the aggressive driver and someone that wants to explore at 30MPH. On the plus side there are no CVT belts to worry about. at dealerships see themselves as the only arbiter of motorcycle truth, and set up the sport as unobtainable. This might work among bench racers who wish to set a measurement for their testosterone-driven extremities, but the enjoyment for many, if not most motorcycle riders, never includes a racetrack, or for that matter a 170 horsepower superbike. It is the social side of motorcycling that attracts many, and never has this been more apparent than in the tremendous growth of the number of women in the sport, or the stunning growth of guided group tours of different countries. Hardly is there a country now that does not offer guided motorcycle tours. So how do you bring that level of enthusiasm to your dealership? One great way is to organize a regular evening get together and invite various speakers, or other personalities to share their experiences. Reach out with advertising through your local social media as to this aspect of your dealership. Create non-stressful gatherings of local riders and build friendships.

MOTORCYCLING IS NOT A SPECTATOR SPORT Successfully Creating A Community At Your Dealership

When motorcycling was on the ascendant, there was a very definite essence of culture at many, if not most, motorcycle dealerships. It was not very long ago when the motorcycle dealership was a place to hang out, drink coffee and expound on the many diverse wonders of motorcycle sport. The dealership was a place and time to learn from the acknowledged local experts, and a place to expand ones’ enthusiasm in a safe environment. In short, it was the local community center for likeminded individuals. The world has changed… and in many respects we are wondering what has happened. We wonder why Millennials are not interested in our sport. Not just Millennials, but young people in general are apparently not interested in the freedom and empowerment of two wheels. It would appear that as a general rule we are no longer breeding “Moto-Heads.” The youth that simply could not wait to get their driver’s license and ride a motorcycle as a ‘right of passage’ or a way to impress the local females is long gone. In fact, young females today, as a rule, are not impressed by men riding or racing motorcycles. The days of “the Fonz” are over, likely never to return. One of the indisputable facts of today’s digital realm is that no matter how many “eyeballs” one might claim, these are not being converted into sales. Why is that you might inquire? Motorcycling, if you are in the business of selling motorcycles, is not a spectator sport. One has to have some degree of participation, which likely means, a degree of action. Furthermore, there might be a learning curve, preceded by the presence of raw attraction. Many of us older folks have had this raw attraction since the first time we ever saw a “live” motorcycle, as opposed to a picture of one or a film or television image of one. Kind of like falling in love, it is the power of attraction that demands that you take that baby for a ride. So how do we instill that enthusiasm in a group of people for whom it might be a totally extraneous environment? First we must make our world available to them in the most user-friendly way possible. Many who work

It is no surprise that some dealers organize a bike night and even less of a surprise that many are not successful due to the lack of enthusiasm from the dealership staff. This effort is an investment--what you put in reflects what you are likely to get out of the effort. Commit to your community that you are a place that should be part of their social group. Your goal is to be a destination, not just a retail store. From my own part as a producer of over 40 films about motorcycle sport, I have been offering a “night at the movies” and showing at dealerships one or more of those movies to encourage current enthusiasts to bring “newbies” or low time riders to a social event where they can be entertained while meeting like-minded people in a cordial environment while “selling” our sport. Not all off our sport is about racing, and neither should be your outreach. Vary your entertainment to attract a broad swath of interest from your community. Offer attractions that will appeal to off-road riders, casual street riders and road racers. In the UK, the trend among influential dealers is to install a café, coffee shop or even a restaurant in the dealership. A social space amongst the motorcycles and motorcycle décor for people to be in the ‘climate’ while participating in a normal, everyday activity, i.e. eating! In some respects it has never been easier to inform your potential customer. Now you need to use that power to invite them into your realm, make friends with them and develop them into a loyal customer. It has been said more frequently lately, that if every rider invited one new rider to a social event at a dealership, our riding society would multiply, along with our political power as a group that could better protect our rights. You in turn would build a business that would long serve you into the future.
