Some would say it starts at the top — every Dealer Principal and GM should participate in a 20 Group. I believe that. I certainly benefited greatly from my years of participating in a 20 Group. In fact, I’m not sure my business would have survived without that education. However NPDA thinks education needs to start at the bottom. Every one of our 100,000 or so Associates deserves a career — not just a job. Carefully tailored educational opportunities broken down by job description. A course of training resulting in recognition for achievement with all the trappings of same. Something to hold on to share with family and with customers! Done well, our interactions with our customers can change their lives — and ours! Stumbling through; illprepared and “faking it until we make it” usually results in not making it.
World’s Luckiest Man By Bob Althoff
GREAT EXPECTATIONS
O
ne of the quintessential pieces of literature is Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations which they tell me is about the education of an orphan named Pip… Education and expectations are certainly topics of importance to me… English literature, not so much. However I can recommend this passage:
... “to exceed the expectations” ... These words are from the National Powersport Dealers Association Mission Statement. They refer to our customers. You know — the ones who provide us with our paychecks. If we serve them well, they will tell their friends and their friends will tell their friends; and viola — we have a “growing customer” base — and Dealers in turn are “sustainably profitable.” Dealer Education must be at the heart of this sustainably profitable equation. And the NPDA is hard at work on this. With the leadership of Vice Chairman Bob Kee, Education Director Dave McMahon and Advisor Eric Anderson combined with the generous involvement of some of the very best providers of Dealer Education ever assembled, NPDA is committed to deliver the education our customers will notice; our Associates deserve, and our Dealerships can thrive on.
6
Working in our Industry should be a career path, not just a job. With the guidance of top names from the educational world like Tom O’Connor, Garage Composites, Spader, LeadHelm and others to be named later, your team will be able to exceed great expectations; your Associates will have a career path and your “Customer base will grow.” Sure beats the dickens out of the alternative! Stay tuned. Bob

first virtual show (Rick Campbell was a decade ahead of COVID) to hosting the MotoBusiness event for MPN and the V-Twin Expo for Paisano as Editor/Publisher of V-Twin News. I was lucky enough to be with Dealernews during the glory days of 13-straight years of double-digit industry growth… There was also the time when Yamaha’s Steve Nessl and I were floor managers for the AVN show in Las Vegas, but this is a family magazine so the less said about that, the better! Point is, nobody knows what you are dealing with better than a fellow dealer! The common denominator of all these events is that we deserve to get together as an industry, do some serious bench racing and do some serious business. Dealers are the smartest, hardest working, funniest folks I know… and like Bill Cameron, I miss not being able to get together at least once or twice a year. If you are not attending events like NVP in Louisville last month, OEM meetings like Kawasaki or AIMExpo in Las Vegas, you are missing out on the raison d’être for being a dealer in the first place. Join the AMA, MIC and NPDA! Attend AIMExpo, get into a 20 Group… As multi-time Top 100 winner, 2X cover dealer and NPDA founding Board Member Kim Harrison says, “We are better together.”

BETTER TOGETHER!
J
ust returned from Kawasaki’s Dealer Meeting just long enough to hit “send” on this February issue and hit the road again for Las Vegas to meet with Dealers, OEMs, the aftermarket and associations I’m fortunate enough to be affiliated with, namely MIC and NPDA. If it is February, it must be time for this industry to get together! After 50 years’ worth of convening in Cincinnati and Indianapolis it is now AIMExpo’s time to play host to all of us once again. Hard to believe that this marks the 10th Anniversary of AIMExpo. Even harder to believe that it has been four years since Kawasaki last hosted a dealer meeting or that the Canadian dealers had never been brought in for a “North American” dealer meeting before now… and it is almost unfathomable to believe Dealer Expo has been dead for nearly a decade. Not to cry in my drink, but I miss the days when this industry routinely rallied together for a meaningful exchange of ideas, innovation, commerce, education, new products… and some serious hijinks at the OEM meetings and the trade shows. Like boiling a frog in a pot, we slowly brought up the heat… gradually distancing ourselves from one another. Cutting out one or more OEM meetings in the interest of cutting costs, losing the Dealer Expo through a lack of interest, having the International Motorcycle Shows eliminated… by the time COVID came, we were already socially distant. All of a sudden, four years have elapsed between Dealer Meetings. “Man, I miss this,” exclaimed Skagit Powersports proprietor and sandwich maker extraordinaire Bill Cameron in Phoenix last week. I haven’t seen Bill since Dealer Expo 2010 when he was named Top 100 Grand Prize winner. But we were immediately able to pick up where we last left off solving this industry’s problems. While we probably only really succeeded in killing a few brain cells at Kawasaki’s bash, it was cathartic to just catch up and talk about things that matter to all of us in this business. I have been to tradeshows from Action Sports and ATV Industry’s

TURN 14 TURNS CORNER WITH TUCKER INVENTORY
Warehousing and office space issues have been resolved as staff members of Turn 14 Powersports (Booth #5077) at AIMExpo, are moving into their new offices, located in suburban Fort Worth. The new building will house the company’s brand management, product development and marketing staff, led by recently announced Turn 14 Powersports President Bob Schuetz. “The collaboration that happens when we are all under one roof is really important, and our people are happy to be back together,” said Schuetz. “Our move into this new facility will be a great start to an important year for Turn 14 Powersports.” The inventory of Tucker Powersports is now moved to Turn 14’s three distribution centers, located in Pennsylvania, Texas and Nevada. Schuetz said it has been a huge project for Turn 14 Distribution warehouse staff, to transport and integrate the more than 11,000 pallets of product and over 60,000 SKU’s moving into Turn 14’s facilities. The company expects all inventory to be checked in and available to dealers by the end of January 2024. “Turn 14 takes pride in its carefully curated line card, which is focused on quality over quantity,” added Schultz. “The company typically carries a full line of products from a tightly managed number of suppliers.” They are currently onboarding 146 different product lines from the recent acquisition. The company expects that this task will be complete by the time AIMExpo takes place and the products posted on the website for dealer access at that time: www.turn14.com Turn 14 Distribution is a national warehouse distributor which sells into the automotive and powersports aftermarket exclusively through the B2B channel. With distribution centers in Pennsylvania, Texas and Nevada, the company boasts ground shipping coverage to 45% of the U.S. population in one day and 100% within two days. Turn 14 Distribution leverages proprietary technology and innovative logistics solutions to drive growth while simultaneously developing robust, symbiotic relationships up and down the supply chain to accelerate that growth. Turn 14 Distribution is privately owned and operated.

NEW DIGS IN DFW
In a related move, Tuen 14 Powersports Sales & Marketing efforts are moving forward to assist dealers for Spring selling. Turn 14 Distribution uses both field territory managers and inside sales staff to support dealer needs. With this partnership, Turn 14 meets dealer needs in person in dealerships, while inside staff is available for prompt response to calls and emails. In addition, Turn 14 Distribution has a Customer Support Team, separate from Sales, to ensure they are meeting dealer needs. The company is building a marketing team for Turn 14 Powersports, led by former Tucker Marketing VP Lesley Madsen, and additional marketing resources for distributed brands. The open positions on the Marketing Teams should be filled by Spring 2024. Turn 14 Distribution’s industry-leading API and data exports are available today, and the company has engaged with all the leading DMS Systems (Lightspeed, DX1, etc.) and channel providers. A data team is working on enhancing product data so more information is available to Turn 14 Distribution’s dealers. The 10,000-square foot office space is in a newly renovated building at 125 Bear Creek Parkway in Keller, Texas, which is northeast of Fort Worth. The move-in should be complete by the end of January 2024.
at the associations,” Pritchard said. “We were able to help the powersports industry not only survive but grow during a global pandemic, and we launched numerous strategic programs to support future success. I’m confident that powersports will continue to be an important part of transportation and recreation in America, and that the associations will be there to help. “Under Erik’s leadership over the past 10 years, the MIC has been strengthened as an association that’s keenly focused on ensuring the livelihood of our industry,” said MIC Chair Derek Brooks, motorcycle product line manager, Yamaha Motor Corporation, U.S.A. “The work Erik led, with the MIC government relations team, was directly responsible for keeping motorsports dealers’ doors open during COVID. He’s also led the charge to expand awareness of motorcycling and increase ridership. The powersports industry is in a stronger position because of Erik’s significant contributions.”
MIC CEO STEPS DOWN
RumbleOn, the largest powersports retailer in North America, Erik Pritchard, president and CEO of the powersports industry’s leading trade and education associations – Motorcycle Industry Council, Motorcycle Safety Foundation, Specialty Vehicle Institute of America and Recreational Off-Highway Vehicle Association – announced that he is pursuing new opportunities and will step down from his position at the associations on March 22, 2024. “It has been a privilege to work with the boards, the member companies, the broader industry, and the talented staff
Pritchard began his work with the industry as outside legal counsel. He was hired as the organizations’ general counsel in 2014. In 2017, he became president of SVIA and ROHVA, and in 2019, he was appointed president and CEO of all four associations. This legal background provided an integral foundation that enabled him to oversee and coordinate the industry’s standard-setting process and the industry’s responses to government agencies. DEALER NEWS: HANSEN’S REACHES END OF THE ROAD
The gas crisis, ATC ban, and more recently the September 2020 Alameda Fire and COVID couldn’t kill Hansen’s Motorcycles in Medford, Oregon. However the recovery has been tough. After “Helping Make Dreams Into Memories Since 1972” the family business has closed its doors.
DISCOVER THE DENAGO DIFFERENCE
250cc Sport ATV Rolled Out At AIMExpo Already making a big name for itself in the mini-motorcycle and small ATV market, Denago is branching out. “Introducing the allnew Daytona 250, the perfect Sport ATV for the youth rider 14 and up that is looking for the challenge of manual shifting along with class leading performance and styling that will be sure to make them stand out,” says National Marketing Manager Steve Lawler. “This entry level Sport Quad is truly in a league of its own featuring a 249cc 4-Stroke Engine with a Remote Oil Cooler, Stainless Steel Exhaust and Electronic Fuel Injection paired with a Manual Shift 4 speed Transmission with Reverse.” Of course AIMExpo is the perfect place to present this big news, he adds. With bigger kids comes bigger expectations but the Daytona has the necessary pieces of the puzzle for the 14-andup rider. “The Daytona’s Chassis features Independent adjustable ‘Sport Suspension’ front and rear, as well as 4-wheel hydraulic disk brakes. It also features an electric start, keyed Ignition with a tether type safety lanyard, plus a manually adjustable speed limiter. Other really cool and functional features include full nerf style floorboards and color-matched hand guards. In a segment that is filled with underpowered automatic ATV’s, the Daytona 250 definitely delivers the Denago Difference,” concludes Lawler. Dealers, draw your own conclusions, drop by the Denago Powersport display in Booth #2032 at AIMExpo.

“It is with deep regret that we announce the closure of our beloved business after more than 50 years of serving our community,” Craig Hansen powered on social media channels. “Over the decades, we have been privileged to be part of your lives and have cherished the memories created together. As we bid farewell, we express our gratitude for your unwavering support and patronage.” “Thank you for being a crucial part of our journey. While this chapter may be closing, the memories and relationships forged will forever remain in our hearts.”
TV TIME
What a year for MotoAmerica (Booth #1099) and their YouTube channel. Back in September of 2023, as the race season ended, the series had already passed its 2022 total year metrics. However the channel continues to power on,” notes MotoAmerica’s Communications Manager Paul Carruthers. “Actually MotoAmerica’s channel increased monthly views in the first months of the post-season,” Carruthers says.” MotoAmerica finished 2023 behind only NASCAR for USA-based motorsport series YouTube channels in the categories of Subscribers, Views and Engagement. GREASE & GEARS TV
After 27 years of print magazine publication, Source Media Group — parent company to Cycle Source Magazine, Track Side Report and Torque Performance — has launched Grease & Gears TV. “The streaming platform is the culmination of a three-year project to bring motorcycle media back to televisions… and beyond,” explains Chris Callen, President of Source Media Group. “It’s a collection of stories from the road, inside the garage and collected over our travels. The great events we go to and the incredible bikes we see all with a deeply personal connection since it is no longer their interpretation of what someone said, but their voice brought
Grease & Gears is now available on Apple and Android devices, Roku and Firestick. “It’s kinda like Netflix for motorcycle riders,” claims Callen. “It is nothing different than the work we have done for three decades. Subscribers pay us to deliver stories on motorcycles, the people who build them and the places they go on them. Same thing here. We just have another dimension with the video component.” While this is nothing new in social media, as many YouTube sites now focus on motorcycle media.” There is one key difference, Callen notes, “Grease & Gears exists outside of the algorithm. Nothing slows the roll for people who want to see great motorcycle media, not even commercials, since they do not exist on Grease & Gears TV.” While the magazine will continue to be published digitally and in print, this new chapter for Source Media has found new life in media. “While citizen journalism has done a very good job in the last 10 years to promote the motorcycle business, there is something about the tried and true methods of journalists who have made telling these stories, asking questions, and making sure regular people are counted, an honest approach that will provide longevity to our culture.,” concludes Callen. Shocking news as former Öhlins exec Paul Devine joins distribution giant LeMans Corporation. On the eve of NVP in Louisville Devine was announced as the new Vice President of Sales & Marketing. With a wealth of experience including stints at Harley-Davidson and S&S Cycle, Devine has a proven track record in the industry, “Mr. Devine is set to bring fresh perspectives and strategic leadership to LeMans Corporation,” according to the announcement. “We are delighted to welcome Paul to the LeMans family,” says president Mike Collins. “His wealth of experience and proven ability to drive sales growth align perfectly with our goals for the future. We believe that Paul’s strategic vision and leadership skills will play a crucial role in elevating our brand and expanding our market presence. We look forward to achieving new milestones together.” In his role as Vice President, Sales & Marketing, Devine will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the company’s sales and marketing functions for Parts Unlimited and Drag Specialties. This includes developing and implementing innovative strategies to drive growth, expanding market share, and further enhancing LeMans Corporation’s position as a key player in the powersports aftermarket sector. “I am honored to be a part of such a dynamic and innovative company as LeMans,” adds Devine. “I look forward to collaborating with the talented team here and contributing to the continued success and growth of the organization. Musical chairs? Fellow Harley-Davidson alumni Marc McAllister moves from a distributor to fill the vacancy at Öhlins left by Paul Devine’s move to a distributor? Tenneco is pleased to announce the appointment of Marc McAllister as the brand’s new Vice President stepping in for Henrik Johansson, who is retiring after nearly 30 years with the suspension specialists. To ensure a smooth transition, Johansson will stay on through March 2024, and then continue to support Öhlins Racing in an advisory capacity for 12 months. “We’re looking forward to this next chapter under Marc McAllister’s leadership, and thank Henrik Johansson for his years of passion, hard work and dedication to Öhlins,” adds Voss. In a related move, Tom Wittenschlaeger shifts to the newly created position of general manager, North America. “The Öhlins team has successfully positioned the business, technology, and product lines to claim the title of the world leader in high-performance suspension for both two and four-wheel vehicles. We are thrilled to have Marc and Tom join the Öhlins leadership team and help extend this exceptional product line to enthusiasts worldwide. Tenneco’s commitment to investment and support will be key drivers in accelerating the growth of the Öhlins business. This strategic focus ensures our success with existing customers and enables us to reach new, underserved customers.” McAllister joins Tenneco after spending the past 30 years in the
powersports industry. Most recently, he served as President and CEO of Tucker Powersports Inc., and prior to his time with Tucker, McAllister spent nearly 25 years with Harley-Davidson, beginning in 1995 as a design engineer and advancing to hold positions of increasing responsibility during his career with The Motor Company.
Technically speaking, Polaris Chief Technical Officer Ken Pucel is still on the job, but he has announced his pending retirement. Effective April 2024 Executive Vice President (EVP) of Global Operations and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Pucel passes the torch following a 9-year career with Polaris. “Ken has been an instrumental leader, operational advisor and trusted colleague during his career with Polaris,” said Mike Speetzen, Polaris CEO. “I am grateful for the impactful contributions he has made to our organization… Ken has built a strong foundation that leaves us well-positioned for continued growth and operational excellence well into the future. Under his leadership, we are situated to take the next step in our evolution to become a more businessunit oriented, customer-focused organization. ”After joining the team as EVP of Operations, Engineering and Lean, Purcel was promoted to CTO in 2022. During his tenure, he was responsible for global growth and expansion as he oversaw initiatives to enhance Lean capabilities, refine its supplier and logistics operations and invest in its safety, quality and operational processes. Polaris’ VP of Off Road Engineering Tony Kinsman has been appointed CTO, in addition to his current responsibilities. In this expanded role, Kinsman will oversee the continued advancement of Polaris’ central engineering capabilities and technology development, while driving increased integration between Polaris’ engineering teams. motorcycle industry stakeholders to be addressed by MRF lobbyists in Washington, DC. Fronting this band of brothers will be industry veteran Bob Kay. “I am extremely pleased with the team we have been able to put together,” claims Kay. “The mission is to focus lobbyists on our right to repair and modify. The Independent Motorcycle Aftermarket Network will be a forum through which the efforts to campaign for those rights can be protected and developed.” Chaired by Kay, initial IMA Council membership includes Keith Ball from Bikernet, Chris Callen from Cyclesource Magazine, Scott Hakins from S&S, Steve Broyles from Stevenson Cycles, John Jessup from Dream Rides, Jason Hallman from Cycle Stop USA and John O’Brien of Hardcore Cycles. “We are pleased to have Bob Kay leading the Independent Motorcycle Aftermarket Council,” stated MRF’s Kirk ‘Hardtail’ Willard. “Bob’s firsthand experience over five decades in the motorcycle industry will be invaluable in helping to direct the efforts of our lobbyists.” The MRF went on to say that “the recent focus on the future of internal combustion engines is threatening the future of independent motorcycle dealers and custom bike builders to provide alternative service centers, as well as servicing older bikes and customization projects.” Dealers and builders wishing to join the Independent Motorcycle Aftermarket Network can contact Bob Kay via e-mail: IMA19032023@gmail.com Or visit the website at www.mrf.org
Gina D’Ambrossio goes to Gates “I am excited to announce that I will officially be joining the Gates Corporation team!” Formerly Marketing & Communications
Manager for Volcon, PR Manager for Triumph Motorcycles America and as Global Media Relations Manager at Alpinestars she has a wealth of wide ranging powersports industry experience — which she plans to put to good use for the global drive-belt specialists. In her new role as Senior Marketing Manager, Mobility at Gates, she says her position “will focus on the global marketing efforts for powersports, motorcycle, bike and scooter products. I can’t wait to bring my creativity and leadership skills to the table and dive into this exciting opportunity. There are so many things I am looking forward to accomplishing!”
With a wealth of powersports industry experience, former dealer Bill Anderson steps up as Western Sales Manager for Sherco USA. “We are excited to welcome Bill to the Sherco family,” says Sherco USA President Ron Sallman. “With his proven track record and deep understanding of the powersports industry, we are confident that Bill will take our efforts out west to new heights. His passion for offroad motorcycles aligns perfectly with Sherco’s commitment to delivering top-quality products and exceptional customer experiences.” Anderson’s extensive background in the powersports industry includes previously owning a Sherco - Beta dealership called Sprocket Sport Moto Tech in Spokane, Washington, as well as his role as a dealer development manager with an OEM, making him a valuable addition to the Sherco USA team. “I am very excited to be joining Sherco USA,” adds Anderson. “I was already very familiar with the brand having been a Sherco dealer. I want to thank Ron and Rhonda (Sallman) for the opportunity to be able to help with the current growth of the Sherco brand in the United States.”
Impressive by any measure, but put it into context: a former coal town West Frankfort, Illinois, has a population of around 7,000. The showroom is housed in the former Desoto dealership Bill Senior bought when he mustered out of the Marine Corps and the same faded paint adorns the brick exterior with the legend “Bill Glodich & Sons Honda.” If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it? “We made some renovations a couple years ago to keep things up to code, but you couldn’t build a better building than we have,” notes Mike. Proof is what is inside that counts more than recreating the Taj Mahal and the dealership has been a community landmark for the three quarters of a century. Knowing your customer, treating them right and telling the truth all these years have resulted in generations of repeat business! When Honda introduced the ATC, Glodich Honda found its sweet spot. “Back in the ATC heyday, we were selling 300+ three wheelers a year… at least one a day all year long,” Mike recollects. They even have 250Rs 185s, Big Reds and other landmark ATCs on display in the showroom to this day. “We put them on the floor from our museum this week. It is the iconic ATC250R… the machine legends were made on and customers have endless stories while riding.” However all classics come with a big “NOT FOR SALE” hang tag as they are from the fully stocked museum across the street.
BILL GLODICH HONDA
How many vintage and classic Honda are housed in the Glodich Museum? “A lot,” laughs Mike! “We have a bit of everything from the chrome tanked Z50s to a CX500 Turbo that has never been started. There is even one of the limited edition Smokin’ Joes edition CBR 600F3 still in the crate in an adjoining warehouse.” The museum hosts the open house the last Saturday of the month in June.

So what does the family with the ultimate collection of Honda’s ride? “Of course we all ride… I have a Gold Wing and my nephew Austin rides an older Fury.” Interestingly, Honda announced the production choppers are returning to the line-up for 2024. Coincidence or market research from the dealer most in touch with the customers?
Not The Biggest Dealer, Just The Best Dealer
“
hen you put your name on your Dealership, you better treat people right,” says Mike Glodich, second generation of a family that has been serving the people of West Frankfort, Illinois, for the past 77 years. “A man’s word is his bond… if you don’t live up to your word, you are worthless.” This philosophy was established by William V. Glodich when he started his business in 1946 and carried on by 5 sons and 2 princesses 77 years later. “It is not what we sell, it is how we do business,” is what Mike says differentiates this dealership. “Honda makes the products, the Glodich family makes the difference.” There is the way everyone else does business and then there is “The Bill Glodich Honda Way” — see sidebar. “We don’t want to be the biggest dealer in the nation… just the best dealer in the nation.” This isn’t just a slogan, it is a fact born out by Honda’s own Circle of Excellence honors program, adds Austin Glodich, the third generation to go into the family dealership. “We were Honda’s #1 Recommended Dealer in the Nation in 2018, 19, 20, 21 and 2022 — A 5 PEAT. Honda has been surveying customers for the past 5 years… We’ve received a 100% score every year.” In fact, they were the only dealer in the country to ever receive a perfect score.
20
“Actually it is the Talons that most of us take to and from work this time of year,” Mike explains. “We have tags from the city that make it street-legal and it is great advertising and a lot more fun to get to work on a rainy day!” The next generation of Honda Pioneers and Talons seems to have been just what the doctor ordered in a post COVID market… ”Along with ATVs, we still sell a lot of Ranchers and Recons in the rural areas outside of town.”
The Glodich Family History
B
ill Glodich Honda was established by the late William V. & Minnie Glodich. When William left the Marine Corps in 1945, he came home to Zeigler, Illinois to help at “Sam’s” his parent’s restaurant. In 1946, Glodich struck out on his own. In nearby West Frankfort, where the dealership is still located today. Glodich started in the auto business selling DeSoto and Plymouth cars… and did moderately well. But DeSoto went dormant in 1961 and Chrysler found itself facing increasing competition. In 1966 Glodich had the foresight to add an up and coming franchise to his already well established business. The franchise was Honda. Although Glodich continued in the car business until the gas shortage in the early 70’s, the die was cast. In time he eliminated the Plymouth car franchise completely and just kept Honda. Although they carry a full range of Honda generators and OPE equipment they did recently add Country Clipper Zero Turn Mowers. But there are no plans for another OEM under the family umbrella. “Bill Jr., Mike and Mark working together there for 45 years is amazing,” adds Austin. “Uncle Mike, Bill, Mark, Richard and Tim helped lay the groundwork for me here now. Although Bill passed almost 2 years ago, it is unreal how rare it is to see anyone’s time like this in a business, let alone all the brothers...They built a truly awesome business. My Uncle Bill knew the products head-totoe and I’m always trying to follow all of my Uncles’ leads in life and business.”
Giving the customers exactly what they want, with a fair deal. That is the Bill Glodich Way! The dealership is set to celebrate 78 years of operation on June 24, 2024. To which the family says: “After 77 years, we must be doing something right!”
Now, 77 years later, the family legacy is still being carried on by Bill and Minnie’s 5 Sons and 2 Princesses: Bill, Mark, Mike, Richard, Tim, Barbara and Michelle. Now led by Austin, the third generation is prepared to do things The Glodich Way.

When it comes to advertising vehicle pricing, we say a Bill Glodich Honda deal is a deal you can trust because we refuse to use misleading tactics that many competitors resort to. At Bill Glodich Honda in West Frankfort, we believe in being honest and transparent with vehicle pricing, and stacking incentives that are not compatible with each other, or add hidden fees, is not that! It is our mission to build an honest relationship and work with you to help you get the best deal with rebates and discounts that are available, and have you as a CUSTOMER FOR LIFE!! Bottom Line We don’t want to be the biggest dealer in the nation. Just the best dealer in the nation.

F
riendly staff, plenty of pre-owned inventory and Honda Finance… These three keys to success are simple and straightforward as they have been since Bill Glodich first decided to become a motorcycle dealer. “From the moment you arrive at our dealership to when you get the new keys to your vehicle, our staff is there to ensure you have an enjoyable experience. They have decades of experience between them, so don’t be afraid to get your questions answered!” Not everyone can afford a new Gold Wing or has the credit score for a Talon, so that is where used units keep the doors swinging and the customers coming. “At our dealership, we stock our lot with pre-owned vehicles. We service our preowned vehicles to make sure they are in road-ready shape.” This helps keep the techs busy year-round and also gives them the flexibility to offer same day service for most routine jobs. Are you looking to take out a loan for your next vehicle? Avoid spending time traveling to credit unions, and apply for a loan with us! We guarantee fixed loan repayment terms. And in total transparency, when you click the “finance” tab on the dealership’s website, it defaults automatically to Honda Finance! No smoke and mirrors or hidden fees in the fine print… the exact opposite: Glodich Honda promises it customers: • Never any hidden Fees • Discounted Parts & Service • Priority service appointments • Discounted Honda Service Plans • No Sales Commissions • Always FREE local delivery They go so far as to spell out “the truth about pricing” on the home page:

BRUNCH WITH BRABEC
W
e were up into the wee hours of the morning watching live feed for ASO Race Control, we scoured scores of OEM race reports in three different languages, trolled the racers personal social media channels, paid the streaming services fees, gave our virtual souls to the Energy Drink marketing teams and cursed Cycle News when they were a couple minutes late with the daily recaps… all in the attempt to vicariously witness another miracle — An American winning Dakar!
And in a script made for Hollywood, Ricky Brabec made history as the only American to win Dakar… Twice! Skyler Howes was a Doc Holliday Huckleberry, complete with black hat and mustachio, and Ross Branch played the hero from another team to make sure Brabec’s victory was well fought! Dealenews tracked the three Top Americans progress, then two but as we learned in the Highlander movie, “there can only be one!” As they had done in 2020, Honda brought the media in for “Brunch With Brabec” where we could all see the Tuareg Trophy up close and personal, talk to Ricky, Skyler and the team’s head wrangler Johnny Campbell. (Thanks again for the walk-through of the bike Johnny). Not sure about the TV feed, but it was awesome to see Johnny and Ricky take a victory lap around Anaheim Stadium during the A2 Supercross… you can’t make this stuff up!
24
About the only one more gobsmacked than the journos was the champ himself… and for good reason! Having a 1 second lead after 6 full stages of racing and several thousand kilometers is definitely cutting it close! “Imagine racing the Baja 500 every day for two weeks… that is what Dakar is like,” says the guy who won 11 Baja 1000s, Johnny Campbell. As nerve-wracking as it may have been, plus the jet-lag from Saudi Arabia, Brabec pulled it together in true championship form to give thanks to everyone who made the impossible possible a second time:
“With so much to say and so little space to do it here’s what we got! We had the time of our life at this year’s Dakar Rally and of course the outcome is everything and then some! SOO stoked for the team, the team work, the new machine, the mechanics, and everyone who supports, everything worked out perfectly and all pieces aligned making this a memorable one! To the ones we race against, you boys put on a good fight and these are the days we live for! Happy to push day in and day out with you all. My girlfriend Sara Price for your first rally we are all so proud of you and you did a great job managing your first Dakar. Looking forward to the future of rally raid with you. The Moho world championships with Johnny Campbell being the lead guy, stellar job and thank you for the hard work and keeping Nacho Cornejo and I fueled and ready to fight each day. To all the mechanics and team helpers, you are the most hard working ones and make the world of rally go round. The hard work doesn’t go unnoticed. Happy to be here and looking forward to the next one!”

icky Brabec took the lead on the rally in the dunes of the Empty Quarter on the formidable 48 HR Chrono stage, and held on to first place all the way to Yanbu to pick up his second Dakar Rally win. From a gap of literally 1 second to an overall margin of 10:43, Brabec and his Monster Energy Honda teammates strategically won stages, broke trails and picked up bonus exactly when needed, particularly Adrien Van Beveren who often opened with the Californian. The Frenchman took advantage of this teamwork to finish third and climb onto the podium for the first time in nine Dakars, and if not for a bit of bad luck, Nacho Cornejo would have been in contention for a place on the podium as well. But it was as easy as the HRC team made it look. “It’s a nice way to start the year with a victory. “I’m really happy we’re all here and all safe and we can go home,” said

an emotional Brabec after timing and scoring confirmed his win. “It wasn’t easy as the course was really tough and so was the competition. Ross Branch — and my own team — kept me on my toes… but not just me, I think we were keeping everyone on each other’s toes. It was definitely a fight to the end for everyone.” After 7,967 km of rallying across Saudi Arabia, Stage 12 ended on the shores of the Red Sea at Yanbu. And as the dust settled, Monster Energy Honda Team’s Ricky Brabec was confirmed the Dakar winner for a second time, further etching his name into the record books as Top American! “This time was a little bit different as I feel like this one was more earned as it was a lot tougher. In 2020, we had a big gap from the get-go. Here, I think me and Ross spent three days with a couple of seconds difference. It was a tight race for all of us. I think between first and third there are eleven minutes or something, whatever Adrien got, but it’s been a tight race and 10 minutes is not a big gap here on the rally. “I had two good days, two opportunities to make a good push, but also stage 11 was a scare factor for me because I knew Ross was starting behind me, 18 minutes behind, and if he caught me it would be over. Stage 11 was hard but I stayed focused, got to the finishing line and didn’t lose too much time, so I’m really happy with this and I’m really happy for the team. I’m happy for all of us, we did an excellent job all of the two weeks. I think number 9 will be my lucky number from now on.” Dakar Rally Provisional Standings after Stage 12 Pos. LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL! Kawasaki Hosts First Dealer Meeting In 4 Years! By Robin Hartfiel
P
icking your battles to win the long game? Kawasaki shared its end game plan with dealers and treated them to a Big Game TV spot sneak peek before the Super Bowl. Kawasaki Dealers came together for the first time in 4 years, to witness the reveal of the Ridge UTV, Angler Edition Jet Ski and a host of new models in Phoenix. It also marked the roll out of the familiar “Let The Good Times Roll” as the official global tagline for Kawasaki. This dealer meeting marked the first time that the green team gathered U.S. and Canadian dealers for a “North American” Dealer Meeting. Hiroshi Ito, President and CEO of Kawasaki Motors unveiled the global strategy to build on current sportbike success and go after increased market share in both the PWC and side-by-side sectors. “It is time to let the good times roll, globally,” explained Ito. Noting that Kawasaki created the UTV category with the MULE in 1988 and that Jet Ski set the stage for the entire personal watercraft industry 50 years ago, Ito states it is time to reclaim the leadership in these categories. The roll out of the Ridge and the Ultra 160 LXS “Angler” Jet Ski are the models that will help achieve significant growth that outpaces the industry in both these key categories, claimed Ito. Adding a bit of muscle to the plan, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin then broke down the wall between the auditorium and the display area… and the Good Times really started to roll

for the dealers in attendance. While the autograph lines stretched long into the evening for SX racers Jason Anderson and Adam Cianciarulo as well as brand ambassadors Jason Britton, Axel Hodges and Jeremy McGrath, it was seat time with the toys that had some dealers buzzing (and the reason media was allowed to crash the party in Phoenix). The North American Dealers were treated to the Ridge demo rides out at Wildhorse Pass race complex. We hope to have a full road test in a coming issue, but after experiencing the inline 4 that powers the Ridge, initial reports from our dealer friends are a thumbs up. Deliveries began shortly after the dealer meeting … and stay tuned for the Big Game in Las Vegas after the AIMExpo for a TV spot showing off the Ridge to the public during the Super Bowl!
Hybrids were another buzz of the show as dealers saw the all-new 2024 Ninja 7 Hybrid ABS and Z7 Hybrid ABS — billed as “the world’s first strong hybrid motorcycles.” Featuring supersport-inspired instant acceleration (with e-boost), excellent fuel economy and button-shift sport riding, these HEV models are here to change the game… after the Ridge rolls out during the Big Game.
- A permanent $2000 price reduction on Pro Mules (and KMC is stepping up to price protect field inventory) - $3000 price reductions on the Teryx 1K - A trick new hybrid motorcycle (Z and Ninja variants). This model has a 451cc engine and was presented as being as fuel efficient as a 250, while accelerating like a 1000. - An upgraded Brute Force 750 and the announcement of a new Brute Force 450 - A Jet-Ski fully outfitted for fisherman and anglers
“Despite my lackluster jaded response to the show, I do see some real high volume gems in the line-up, like a new updated Ninja 500 and Z500, which were already our best sellers as the previous generation 400s,” notes Kevin Dunn, GM for Capital Powersports. “They are coming in at the same price point with a fresh face, more motor, TFT display, LED lights, and smartphone connectivity… these will be big winners. We sold almost 40 Ninja 400s in 2023! Shall we go for 50 in 2024?”

“Lots of excitement here at the 2024 Kawasaki Motors Corp., U.S.A. dealer meeting in Phoenix,” says Mark Sheffield from TMDA… um, NPDA, make that Woods Cycle Center. “While the big news was the release of the new Ridge UTV — 4-cylinder engine, super nice fit and finish, optional cab and HVAC — personally I was more excited about some of the other news: - A new Ninja 500 (in some trick paint schemes celebrating 40 years of Kawasaki) and at the same price as last year’s 400

“Spent some time on the floor. Unlike some other industry vendors who don’t like to mix with us working class folk, the entire leadership team from Kawasaki was out and about answering questions and making friends,” Sheffield says. “Kawasaki continues to play the long game, and in an industry full of vendors, they truly are a great business partner.” More inventory, aggressive price reductions, targeted market niches and an engaged dealer network? Sounds like Kawasaki is indeed ready to “Let The Good Times Roll!”
AMA & KAWASAKI COMMEMORATE MILESTONES

he American Motorcyclist Association is commemorating 100 years of promoting the motorcycling lifestyle in conjunction with Kawasaki
celebrating the 40th birthday of the legendary Ninja. To honor both anniversaries, the AMA is raffling a 2024 Kawasaki Ninja ZX-4RR 40th Anniversary Edition in 2024. “Kawasaki has supported the AMA’s mission for over 50 years as a Business Member helping to promote and preserve the motorcycling lifestyle,” said Kawasaki Regional Sales Director and AMA Board of Directors Member, Mark Hosbach. “This year marks the 100th anniversary of the AMA as well as the 40th anniversary of the legendary Kawasaki Ninja motorcycle.” The original Ninja 900 of 1984 is a historic piece of motorcycling history, melding open-class power — from an all-new liquid-cooled engine — with near-middleweight handling, a combination other open-class sportbikes simply could not match. The new ZX-4RR Anniversary Edition mixes world-class sportbike handling characteristics with a screaming, 16,000-rpm engine that must be experienced to believe. “We are proud to partner with the AMA to offer
a limited 40th anniversary model of our new Ninja ZX-4RR motorcycle to be raffled off in 2024 to help further support the AMA’s cause,” claims Kawasaki’s Hosbach. “The Kawasaki Ninja is an icon of a motorcycle, a model that is synonymous with the sportbike category like no other,” added AMA COO James Holter. “We are honored and appreciative that Kawasaki approached the AMA with this opportunity to commemorate both of our historic milestones with this anniversary raffle. Even better, every dollar raised will go to fund the American Motorcycle Heritage Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to preserving American motorcycling history for future generations through the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame.” To enter, donate to the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum. A $5 donation will receive one ticket, or a $20 donation gets five entries. Participants must be 18 years or older and a resident of the United States to win.
Effective February 1, 2024, prime and non-prime consumers can qualify for financing for Kawasaki’s full line of motorcycles, ATVs, side x sides and Jet Skis through Octane’s in-house lender Roadrunner Financial. At the same time, Kawasaki’s network of more than 1,000 independent dealers in the United States will benefit from Octane’s fast and easy digital financing experience as well as competitive terms and flexible rates for its customers. “We’re thrilled to strengthen our longstanding relationship with Kawasaki and become its first full-spectrum credit partner,” said Mark Davidson, Co-Founder and Chief Revenue Officer at Octane. “By bringing our fast, easy financing experience to even more Kawasaki consumers, we’re delivering on our commitment to connect people with their passions and make buying better.”
FINANCIAL NOTES
“Octane has proven to be a great fit for Kawasaki and our customers,” added Kawasaki Senior Director of US Sales, Anthony Kestler. “With full spectrum lending, Kawasaki dealers now have multiple options for financing customers on all Kawasaki powersports products, accessories and apparel. We are confident that with the combined strengths of Kawasaki’s industry leading products and Octane’s consumer retail finance expertise, our dealers will experience retail success.”
S
how me the money! In attrition to price reductions on 2023 UTVs of $2,000 and $3,000 depending on the model, Kawasaki had dealers seeing greenbacks on the F&I side, inviting a select group of service providers to the North American Dealer Meeting. Octane Lending, Inc — the fintech company that also owns Cycle World — used the Phoenix dealer meeting to unveil its new agreement to provide promotional financing for prime customers in the United States. This is in addition to its in-house lender Roadrunner Financial offering financing solutions for creditworthy customers just outside of the traditional “prime” range since January 2021.

WHAT THEY SAID So with new ATVs, new 500 streetbikes, and all new UTVs for the fastest growing segment in Powersports, as well as a expanded production of key hot models, big price reductions in existing UTV models, I would say Kawasaki is going to have a very big year, and continue their upwards growth even more so, like they have been doing for several years now as they increase their market share. Go Kawasaki! — Kevin R. Dunn GM Capital Powersports, Wake Forest, NC Kawasaki is just getting started and doubling down to dominate. While you may not have seen everything you wanted, they are creating and going to be coming in stronger and better. To be disclosed… a lot to see in the next few years. Can’t wait! — AJ Meisel GM Plano Kawasaki/Suzuki, Plano, TX I am stoked about the price reduction on the Pro Mule. Already a great machine, the upgraded pricing will make this model stand out in showrooms when customers are comparing it against similar models from other brands. Especially those who had multiple pandemic price increases, and the few who are still clinging to unwarranted surcharges. Let the good times roll! — Mark Sheffield, Strategic Advisor Woods Cycle Country, New Braunfels, TX The show was very good and it was great to be out and see dealers again. As far as the lineup I think the Ninja 500 is a homerun, along with the Hybrid. I believe the market will accept a Hybrid much better than full electric. The price reductions on the Pro Mules is also what we need to keep pushing the pedal. One knock, some of us old guys could not understand the Japanese and they should have put the verbiage up on the screen. But overall it was a good show. — John Leach Dealer Principal, Pete’s Cycle, Baltimore, MD

T
he numbers are in! All segments of the powersports market depreciated noticeably in the second half of 2023. This reflects a combination of a more difficult trade environment, tougher finance conditions and higher supply. In the motorcycle segment, values for the most recent 10 model years of cruisers averaged 3.6% lower in the November-December period compared to SeptemberOctober. This was 7.9% lower in calendar-year 2023 compared to 2022. Sportbikes averaged 3.6% lower in November-December compared to SeptemberOctober. Sportbikes were 3.6% lower in full-year 2023 compared to 2022. In the side-by-side sector, the utility segment averaged 4.4% lower in November-December compared to September-October. Utility SxS values were 9.6% lower

in 2023 compared to 2022. The sport segment averaged 4.7% lower in November-December compared to September-October. Sport machines were 7.8% lower in 2023 compared to 2022. The market correction has clearly impacted cruisers and utility side-by-sides more than sportbikes and sport side-by-sides. In fact cruisers and utility machines are now bringing less money than any time in the last three years. Depreciation has clearly set in for sportbikes and sport side-by-sides as well. Sportbikes saw accelerated depreciation in the second half of 2023, while sport SxS steadily losing value since the spring. Sales activity in early spring 2024 will provide some guidance as to how the year will unfold. At this time we are forecasting continued depreciation given the increasing headwinds affecting our industry.

Retrospectively examining Average Wholesale Prices (AWP) shifts for 2023, we see trends that largely resemble the Covid price balloon deflation that began in 2022. While AWPs in 2023 were down significantly from the COVID peaks, pricing seems to have settled back into alignment with pre-pandemic values. For 2023, seasonal price variance, calculated by measuring the difference between the highest and lowest monthly AWP, saw auction values decline ~22% from peak to trough. For the year 2023, AWP for all auction transactions comes in at ~$7200, down 20% from 2022 but up 8% from 2019.

In the short term, expect AWPs to rise 2-4%, monthover-month, as we approach May. Expect savvy dealers to stock up on used products at attractive price points to lure consumers into showrooms this Spring. With new product volumes remaining elevated over normal levels, expect OEMs and lenders to offer attractive wholesale and retail incentives. While this should help spur dealership floor traffic, it may impact dealer appetite for pre-owned, keeping AWPs muted versus recent years. Turn times will be key to dealer success, and the auction will remain the most effective channel for dealers to manage their inventories.

Looking Towards 2024
The biggest questions from 2023 still loom large as we embark on the new year. How will dealers and OEMs handle the surplus of 2023 models unsold at dealerships? How will interest rates change, and how will this impact the consumer’s ability to finance purchases? Will the economy fall into recession or glide into a soft landing? How will the November elections and the uncertainty around our choices affect consumer confidence? While we’re uncertain of the outcomes, we must focus on what we can expect.

December AWPs mirrored pre-pandemic trends, producing subtle shifts versus the prior 90 days. AWPs in the three largest on-road segments, Domestic Cruiser, Metric Sport, and Metric Cruiser, improved in the last three months, rising as much as 9%. Conversely, OffRoad categories tumbled 5-10%, with the largest segment, SxS, showing the biggest percentage drop. This can be directly attributed to a large de-fleet of heavily used rental product liquidated in the year’s final month. As a whole, AWPs in 2023 were down ~12% year-over-year.

On one particular Saturday, I was showing a young couple a few used bikes that were in their price range: a Yamaha XS400 Special (4-stroke twin) and a Yamaha RD400 (2-stroke twin). He loved the custom design of the of the Special, but she was all about the racy looks and light weight of the RD. Both bikes were priced the same, but he managed to convince her to buy the XS with this line: “Honey, with the XS we get two extra strokes for the same price!”. True story! It’s a good thing that they picked the XS because later the same day another customer took the RD for a test ride. While stopped at the light in front of the dealership, it backfired and shot backwards when he put it in gear (2-strokes can do that)! Fortunately, only his pride was hurt.

It was partly for the extra income (at the time a postdoc’s salary was pretty meager) but mostly for what I’d call “motorcycle immersion therapy”! The dealership, which had once been a drug store, had been remodeled but stood adjacent to an old 2-story brownstone. Two of our mechanics rented the 2nd story apartment, but the ground floor was home to our used bike inventory, secured safely behind a reinforced steel door. To this day,

While two extra strokes may have settled the couple’s spat, the RD had a hidden superpower that the XS didn’t: agility and speed. Both because of its bantam weight and powerful 2-stroke engine! ON THE WATERFRONT The power to weight advantage of 2-cycle engines is nothing new. According to Wikipedia: “The first truly practical two-stroke engine is attributed to Yorkshireman Alfred Angas Scott, who started producing twin-cylinder water-cooled motorcycles in 1908”. So yeah… well over 100 years of ring-dings! Since then, these little gems have found homes in lawnmowers, leaf blowers, generators, outboard motors, cars, motorcycles, and snowmobiles just to mention a few. I can still remember pouring cans of oil into Saab fuel tanks when I was a gas-station jockey in high school. There weren’t a lot of them on the road but there were enough to justify stocking 2-stroke oil as a backup for owners who had forgotten their can of official Saab oil. You could always see/smell them coming!
a more reliable water-cooled 372cc engine. Despite the improvements, public interest languished, and it was discontinued by 1970. Contractually, Jacobsen was barred from licensing his designs to another manufacturer through 1971. So once the contract expired, he licensed his standup design to Kawasaki and the Jet-Ski® was born!
Given the broad utility of 2-strokes, it’s no surprise that Canadian snowmobile pioneer Bombardier sought to re-purpose their Ski-Doo® Rotax® engines into other recreational platforms. Enter the Sea-Doo®! Introduced in 1968 as a “Jet-powered aqua scooter” the original Sea-Doo® had an air-cooled 320cc Rotax® engine that gave it an “blazing” top speed of ~25 mph! A video of this “breakneck” performance can be found here. The excitement was immediate! It even made the cover of the 08/68 issue of Popular Mechanics!
There are still a few of the original Sea-Doo models out there, largely as restoration projects. Here’s a great YouTube video of the ’68 model that will give you an appreciation of its unique “character” (link). Yeah, they were loud and like most 2-strokes of the time they smoked a lot! A complete restoration video can be found here. STILL STANDIN’? Although it appeared that Sea-Doo® met its Waterloo in 1970, Kawasaki pressed on and by 1972 they had unveiled a stand-up style watercraft they named Jet-Ski®. Powered by a 400cc 2-stroke twin, the Jet-Ski® was the only product of its kind that was commercially available. And, for the next 16 years, Kawasaki dominated watersports recreation. But not for long! Grandson to founder Joseph Armand Bombardier, Pierre Beaudoin and a handful of youthful accomplices, dusted off their 68’ playbook to revisit sit-down style watercraft. In 1988 Sea-Doo emerged from the dustbin of its past reborn as the model 5801.
Powered by a 580-cc water-cooled (the original was aircooled) twin cylinder Rotax® 2-stroke engine, the little 5801 pumped out nearly 50 hp and was capable of speeds up to 40 mph! But Sea-Doo wasn’t the first to market a sit-down style watercraft. Two years earlier, Yamaha had introduced its WaveRunner 500 (Marine Jet 500T) at the Chicago Boat, Sports, and RV Show. The design was the brainchild of Clayton Jacobsen II (10/23-08/22) and was licensed for production by Bombardier. However, complaints of overheating and poor ergonomics prompted Bombardier to move to

Remarkably, Clayton Jacobsen had also been hired as a consultant for the development of Marine Jet. Like the Beach Boys…. this guy “Got Around”. The 500T featured a 496-cc water cooled twin 2-stroke similar to the 5801. It could pump out 32 HP giving it a top speed of 35-37 mph. While the 500T is considered to be the “granddaddy” of seated watercraft, both machines were embraced by an enthusiastic public. Of course, their success was in no small part due to their ease of operation compared to stand-up Jet-Ski®s!
OFF TO THE RACES! So here we are in 2024… some 35+ years after seated watercraft became a thing. What’s happened to the PWC market in the interim? Obviously, a ton! New/old OEM players came and went as illustrated in the timeline below and product refinements and technologies improved continuously. And yet, the venerable 2-stroke endured. But there was an exception. Always willing to buck the status quo, Honda’s AquaTrax® line of watercraft were introduced with supercharged 4-stroke powerplants. Unfortunately, their Waterloo came in 2009 after limiting initial rollout to only a few selected states. In the timeline graphic above, the red bars indicate the year that 4-stroke engines were introduced into the product lines of each OEM. Not surprisingly, the shift from 2-stroke to 4-stroke propulsion in watercraft paralleled the same migration by outboard motor manufacturers. In 1997 the EPA had established exhaust emission standards for outboard and personal watercraft engines with an implementation target of OEM model year 2010 (link). However, manufacturers were allowed to delay production line compliance testing until model year 1999 for outboard engines and 2000 for personal watercraft (link). As you can see from the chart above, save Honda (which was compliant from the start), all PWC manufacturers began the transition to lower polluting 4-stroke engines by 2002-2003. The slight delay from target year 2000 could be a result of EPA permitted “emissions averaging” over product groups. Rationale for the EPA standards is illustrated in the table below. In 1997 the California Air Resources Board (CARB) produced a report which summarized State outboard and watercraft emissions as follows: In this report, personal watercraft emissions of hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides were nearly 4X the level of outboard emissions. And the same for carbon monoxide and particulate matter. The daily emissions of HC+NOx alone from all PWCs in the state were equivalent to the cumulative amount produced by a single 1998 automobile driven over 100,000 miles (link)! If you really want to get into the weeds, the following table breaks out personal watercraft HC emissions by horsepower range and 2/4 stroke engine technologies (C=carbureted, I=indirect injection, D=direct injection), source: EPA (link).

Advantage? Pretty clear…. 2 extra strokes!

SERIAL 1: LIFE AFTER HARLEY WITH LEV?
After Harley’s Serial 1 eBike program short circuited, the pedal assist bike has found new life with LEV Manufacturing, Inc. (formerly known as Life Electric Vehicles, Inc.). Part of the new deal includes shifting production to the U.S. (wait, the all-American brand wasn’t made in America?) Born as a skunkworks inside Harley-Davidson’s Product Development Center, the eBicycle project began in 2018 with a small group of passionate motorcycle and bicycle enthusiasts and became a stand-alone brand in 2020. However it was never really a sales success for The Motor Company and was eventually sold to LEV late last year. “Bringing e-bike production to the USA is an important next step for the Serial 1 Brand,” explains VP of Sales Michael Volovitz. “We couldn’t be more thrilled to announce this acquisition with a perfect partner in LEV Manufacturing, which will help Serial 1 better serve our customers, dealers and master distribution partners worldwide. The added benefit of reducing production costs and subsequently lowering the MSRP is a significant win for our consumers and partnerships.” LEV Manufacturing echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the positive impact on the market: “This is the perfect marriage of a great premium American brand with exceptional quality driven American manufacturing. We are very excited to add more jobs to the USA and continue to create world-class products with the acquisition of Serial 1. The cost-cutting measures and the lowered MSRP will further enhance the accessibility of premium E-Bikes for consumers.” LEV Manufacturing’s industry relationships and decades of experience in designing, manufacturing, and commercializing light electric vehicles, guarantee an advanced product at lower prices. LEV Manufacturing’s assembly plant utilizes free-trade zone processes, endorsed by a United States Certificate of Origin, eliminating 3rd party manufacturing, which will result in a more cost-effective production, allowing for a subsequently lower MSRP.

SUPER73 GIVES DAKAR WINGS
It takes a lot of logistics in order to reach the finish line of the Dakar Rally. Among the best in the business is the Red Bull Desert Wings operation. So who did the experts turn to when they needed mobility solutions? SUPER73! The American lifestyle adventure brand specializing in electric motorbikes created a custom-built fleet for the team to move throughout the bivouacs. The collaborative effort helped the team throughout the two-week rally of 5,000km over the sands of Saudi Arabia. The hub of the Dakar Rally is the bivouac — this is where the SUPER73 bikes proved invaluable, allowing the crew to get from A to B with speed, style and low emissions. The Dakar bivouac is 200,000 square meters in size. Each bivouac is the temporary home to over 3,000 people. Catering, showers, electricity, water, medical support, waste disposal, satellites, TV production — everything has to be broken down and reassembled every day. Navigating this maze on foot after another day in the dunes is suboptimal, cruising around on a SUPER73 electric bike makes much more sense. Apparently it looked like fun as top racer from down under (and a Dakar winner) Toby Price was tooling around on a SUPER73 after a full day in the dunes! Same for Red Bull Off-Road Junior Team rider Cristina Gutierrez — First ever Spanish female to win a Dakar stage and second female overall — Toyota Gazoo Racing’s Seth Quintero (youngest ever factory team driver in Dakar history).
SPEAKING OF SUPER73
The SUPER73 Industry E-Bike Throwdown at AIMExpo will pit dealers, exhibitors, media and industry leaders in a series of races to see who will ultimately be crowned champion of the industry. “We jumped at this opportunity to be title sponsor because the e-bike races speak to who we are — a fun, inclusive, enthusiastic community of riders who also have a spark of competitive spirit,” said Michael Cannavo, co-founder and chief marketing officer of SUPER73. “Our products have been fusing motorcycle heritage with youth culture, introducing new generations to powersports. Exhibiting at AIMExpo, sponsoring the most fun, adrenalinepumping event at the show, and being able to connect and network with everyone in the industry is a no-brainer.” In addition to the Throwdown, SUPER73 is bringing a bunch of bikes to Las Vegas including its fully-capable urban commuters to its all-terrain Adventure Series. Many models are Bluetooth compatible and feature front or full suspension, fenders, lights and a horn. SUPER73 bikes will also be available for demos on the e-bike track during AIMExpo. “We’re extremely excited to have SUPER73, a pioneer in the e-bike space and a giant in the e-bike community, join AIMExpo,” added Andre Albert, director of marketing and events at the Motorcycle Industry Council. “A huge part of their success is because of the effort they’ve put into cultivating community and inclusion, something our industry strives for every day. As the e-bike segment grows, having such an influential brand at AIMExpo shows that the powersports industry is well positioned to serve the growing demand for electric-powered products.” Not to mention this crowd will race anything! “The SUPER73 Industry E-Bike Showdown perfectly demonstrates that community, technology and generations can come together in a single event that will deliver a night of unforgettable racing and fun,” concluded Albert.

THE MOST CAPABLE EQUAD EVER MADE?
With the ATV market being largely dominated by gas-powered vehicles, LIVAQ positions themselves as one of the most exciting new companies to appear in the adventure vehicle space today. Seeking to revolutionize the off-road industry, the Detroit-based builder announces their all-new electric 4x2, the EQUAD. The LIVAQ EQUAD facilitates an eco-friendly off-road experience for anyone who hops on. Created using only sustainable technologies, the EQUAD allows riders to explore more without having any negative impact on the environment. “Since I was a child growing up in Mexico, I was immensely interested in transportation design,” explains LIVAQ Founder and CEO David Medina. “I originally had the idea for creating an electric ATV in 2016 when I saw that electric transportation in the off-road marketplace was vastly underserved and saw the ATV landscape as overwhelmingly gas-driven. I recognized a window of opportunity but unfortunately at the time, I couldn’t find anybody crazy enough to write a check to a 17-year-old,” comments Medina. “Years later, LIVAQ emerged from that original idea and was created to ultimately serve the need of electric power in the off-road marketplace and pay respect to our climate. Finally in 2022, we were able to deliver the first-ever EQUAD that was the synthetization of sustainable technology, powerful performance, and years of work.” With a claimed top speed of up to 67 miles per hour derived from dynamic dual hub 16-kilowatt motors, the EQUAD far exceeds the capabilities of most gas-powered counterparts. A four-link rear suspension paired with an agile independent front system ensures the EQUAD remains composed and steady against nearly any landscape. Implementing a hydraulic brake system helps to guarantee absolute control and stopping power on any terrain. With a battery range of up to 170 miles, the EQUAD seamlessly handles lengthy excursions with ease. The LIVAQ EQUAD is currently available for pre-order at $28,600 MSRP, though a special pre-order discount of up to 30% is available until March 2024. NPDA PARTNER PROFILE: Iron Lilly LLC/The Iron Lilly Project
Lilly Farrow has a story that needs to be shared. As a single mom, she was an active suffragette, a business woman, community leader and a long distance motorcyclist. Lilly persevered against long odds to run one of the most prominent motorcycle dealerships of the twentieth century. Lilly became the country’s first female motorcycle dealer. She continues to inspire young women riders to this day, with her hard work, passion, persistence, influence, leadership, and creativity. Lilly died on September 22, 1984 at the age of 92. As NPDA Chair Bob Althoff, who sat at Lilly’s desk for several decades, says, “Lilly’s story is so much more than a motorcycle movie — it is at its heart, a true Horatio Alger story (the popular American author who believed that hard work, honesty and determination can conquer all obstacles). But instead of rags-to-riches, it is about rags-to-richness.” Here’s why this story is important. Early on, Lilly recognized the power of community. Her life’s work built a community, and it eventually came to her rescue. Her business and brand came to be identified with inclusion and kinship. Lilly’s world needed that, and so does ours. The story of Lilly Farrow is garnished with the speed, power and thrills that motorcycling exhibits, but it is Lilly’s heart, guts and perseverance that wins. Iron Lilly, LLC was created to bring awareness and appreciation for the incredible life and contributions of Lilly Farrow to the emerging motorcycle industry at the turn of the 20th century. This is centered around producing a premium independent feature film with Hollywood quality production and acting talent. Why Does Iron Lilly, LLC Partner with The NPDA? Iron Lilly, LLC partners with the NPDA to bring awareness to our project with an organization that shares a common goal of supporting and advancing the success and profitability of the Powersports industry. By participating in the NPDA community, The Iron Lilly Project has access to Dealers and industry professionals that have direct influence with current and potential motorcycling enthusiasts. How Can NPDA Members Best Benefit from Our Partnership with the Iron Lilly Project? The Iron Lilly Project film will reflect a wholesome image of the motorcycle community which will resonate with audiences everywhere, encouraging personal empowerment, inclusiveness and true community which crosses all cultural lines. By supporting our project the motorcycle industry will be uplifted and will benefit from increased awareness that motorcycling is a fun, adventurous sport for everyone regardless of sex or age. We feel that the Iron Lilly story will prove to be one of those powerful movie events that will transcend cultures, ages and time. MIC LEADERSHIP Erik Pritchard, MIC President and CEO, will Leave Associations in March Erik Pritchard, president and CEO of the powersports industry’s leading trade and education associations – Motorcycle Industry Council, Motorcycle Safety Foundation, Specialty Vehicle Institute of America, and Recreational OffHighway Vehicle Association – announced that he is pursuing new opportunities and will step down from his position on March 22. “It has been a privilege to work with the boards, the member companies, the broader industry, and the talented staff at the associations,” Pritchard said. “We were able to help the powersports industry not only survive but grow during a global pandemic, and we launched numerous strategic programs to support future success. I’m confident that powersports will continue to be an important part of transportation and recreation in America, and that the associations will be there to help.” Under Pritchard’s guidance, the MIC has grown as the voice for powersports. He led the way in establishing and enhancing key stakeholder relationships for the entire powersports industry, including with local and federal government officials, parallel industry associations, and additional powersports associations. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Pritchard helped navigate the industry through global shutdowns, led the team in working with the U.S. government to ensure powersports businesses could stay open, launched campaigns to position powersports as the perfect way to social distance, and provided tools to give businesses realtime information on guidelines and available support. RESEARCH AND STATISTICS The MIC’s Next Big Data Book will be Available Sooner than Ever Before
Normally available toward the end of every year, the industry’s most comprehensive, summarized examination of the U.S. motorcycle market, motorcycle owners, what they buy, and how they use their bikes, will now be out every February, just ahead of the spring and summer selling seasons. The upcoming MIC Statistical Annual will be free, as always, for MIC members and will now cost non-members $3,000. The publication is being released in time for MIC members to review it and bring their questions to AIMExpo in Las Vegas, February 6-8, where they can meet with the association’s research team at the MIC Business Center. Also at AIMExpo to field queries will be MIC partners David Savlowitz of Competitive Analytics, and John Sinski from S&P Global Mobility, who regularly provide members with two key reports, the Business Advisory Forecast and Motorcycles in Operation. “As we’re now offering the stat annual so much earlier than usual, supplemental information will be provided later this year for certain reports where the data isn’t yet available,” said Buckner Nesheim, MIC director, Research and Statistics. “The Motorcycle Statistical Annual remains the MIC Research and Statistics Department’s flagship publication, and the industry’s preeminent source of information, offering valuable insights into the powersports market encompassing sales, demographics, and trending topics. This exclusive resource serves as a significant benefit that’s free for our members.” The MIC Motorcycle Statistical Annual reviews the vehicles by model type and size, by states and regions, and by market share. The publication provides detailed sales information and features a profile of retail outlets nationwide. remembering the successes of the BRC /Turcke legal program (circa 1996-2000s), OHV politics, and my run for Congress in 1998. Some of the real successes along the way include getting the 2003 CA 96 dBA OHV Sound law enacted, rewriting the CA OHV Program via SB 742 in 2007. More recently Oceano Dunes and other OHV challenges have been met head-on. We also cover what it will take to get more riders engaged, finding common ground with conservation groups, cost recovery, the 1984 Wilderness Act/trail closures, Timber Wars, building quality relationships with decision-makers and agency staff, importance of on-the-ground trail decisions made at the local level, and many other topics. We covered a lot of ground! In fact the interview is 54 minutes long. I hope that it sheds some light on my advocacy journey and its goal to preserve and protect access to public lands for responsible OHV recreation. Lastly, I want to thank the many leaders in the powersports industry, politics, government, grassroots, conservation groups, and recreation organizations who have mentored me over the last 34 years. Their patience, commitment, fellowship, and support is what I credit for helping me become an effective advocate for responsible recreation and resource managementrelated policies, legislation, and projects.

pecial thanks to the Big Rich podcast and their ongoing effort to interview Inductees into the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame to preserve their off-road advocacy and access stories for those future generations that are interested in the early land-use battles (circa 1980s – 2000s). Recently, I was interviewed by Big Rich where we had a great conversation about my earlier life in Humboldt County growing up enjoying the great outdoors in the Pacific Northwest. We talk about a lot of subjects including my first motorcycle, recreating on nearby timber company property and public lands. All these things that led up to becoming a land use advocate. We also hit on the seminal event that started my landuse career, getting involved in the BRC and subsequently becoming their Western Representative. This led to

I RIDE, I DRIVE, I OFF-ROAD, I TREAD LIGHTLY!
Confessions Of A Customer® By Eric Anderson
The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) stated in an article by Kate King this last December, that the average American retail store today is the smallest it has been in 17 years. This of course reflects how much shopping habits have changed so average retail store footprints are down substantially. Shopping malls have become echo chambers, except for the few still hanging onto anchor department stores like Sears (oops, gone), Macey’s (closing 125 stores), or Nordstrom (closing 15 stores and reducing the sizes of the rest), or Bed Bath and Beyond (stores gone with inventory moved to Overstock.com). You get the picture. According to the WSJ article over 1000 department stores have closed between 2016 and 2020 (pre-pandemic), and even more since. Admittedly, many tend to be mall-based apparel stores and we know how soft that market is now. We also know auto dealership doors are swinging less often in favor of making “fleet deals” on the internet, via text or phone calls. My Toyota dealership used to have 20 salespeople on the property and 2 handling “fleet sales” in the back room. That ratio has totally flip-flopped now making their dealership more of a “vehicle pick-up location” than an old-fashioned shoppable dealership. Do they need all 5 acres with a monster showroom any longer?
Is Your Store’s Footprint Too Big?
retail stores are shrinking…but small food spaces are booming Artwork courtesy of The Wall Street Journal
W
e all remember the time in the last 20 years when building a “retail palace” was de rigueur. Harley Davidson pushed dealers for massive upgrades to everything including the parking lot, in-store lighting, black and orange flooring, MotorClothes® branded slatwall, futuristic countertops and Jetson-like signage sprinkled in. The Harley-Davidson diner concepts of the past were great too but added “food headaches” which most dealers did not want to deal with. Malcolm Smith commented after his new “retail monument” to metric motorcycles in Riverside, California was finished, that he put a “ton of money” into it…and prayed it all works out for the best. It did eventually, but he was a nervous wreck for a few years waiting for his ROI. Is your flagship store losing its shine, door swings and floor traffic in these days of post-pandemic internet shopping?
60
Tiny, kiosk-based food stores, however, are popping up everywhere. Would you consider offering pre-made, semi-fresh food, brewed coffee, and bottled beverages inside your store to attract more visitors and help pay rent on your large space? No, don’t add space, use what you have already. Americans are spending more time “dining out” or “taking in” from restaurants, coffee shops, and lunch-only outlets than ever before. Smaller, local, boutique food spaces and mobile deliveries like DoorDash and Uber Eats are booming. How about joining the trend? The true “fast food” market is already dominated by McDonalds, Wendy’s, Burger King, and the others — I would suggest you consider going the healthy fast-food route with locally pre-made sandwiches delivered each morning to your store and available in a glass doored fridge or microwave-equipped vending
machine. We all “need” to eat 3 times a day and we seem to have less and less time to prepare meals ourselves. If we customers were able to sip a $5.00 café mocha and eat a pastrami-on-rye inside your store, would your customers come more often and stay longer eventually buying more? Remember your eye candy is on display for dessert. Regular retail stores not selling edibles are cutting their size down to improve their bottom line with fewer visiting customers. You may not have that choice if you own the building, so consider the reverse by adding in a foody revenue stream with (pre-made) sandwich bar, snack vending machine with cookies next to the parts counter. You still need to figure out how to sell your “bread and butter” hard goods by any method you can, but adding some sort of easy food source might swing the front door more often assuming you got the word out. “Now serving gourmet coffees, sandwiches, muffins, and motorcycles!” “Eat lunch at Freedom Powersports… now!”
Food distributors or wholesale food suppliers — national or local — can make this diversifying project almost “turnkey” for you. Depending on how big you want to go, consider Sysco(.com) or US Foods for example. Learn more about fresh and healthy food trends at US Foods here:www.usfoods.com/great-food/food-trends.html The rent for retail space is becoming more expensive by the minute placing heavy pressure on you to sell more of anything — a challenging task with lower floor traffic. You have a choice to cut down expenses with a smaller footprint… or add food items to build floor traffic and profits. Remember, you have something the local Subway or Starbucks doesn’t have — expensive eye candy!

Although his Rally 450 didn’t clear customs until just hours before the start of the Dakar Rally, defending W2RC Rally 2 Champ Mason Klein was Top American. In a season of firsts, including moving up to the top class and being the first person outside the Kove Moto Racing Team based in China to race the bike. After crashing out of the 2023 Dakar, Klein found himself without his former KTM support ride (despite winning a Stage in Dakar and the W2RC Rally 2 title two years in a row). Kove stepped up and Klein rewarded them with a Top 10 finish in the Prologue Stage. Despite the Internet “experts” railing on about Rally being no place for a Chinese bike, Mason was Top American on this year’s Prologue Stage and opted to break trail by leading out whenever he could… watch episode #2 of Scot’s interview where he explains why he would rather lead than follow, even in the toughest navigational stages possible! Stage 1 was even more of a statement as Klein chased former Dakar Rally winner Ricky Brabec on the HRC Honda to the finish line as the two Americans went 2-3 in the first “real” day of Dakar 2024. Despite taking 10th, Klein had opted to lead out on Stage 1 ahead of fellow American Skyler Howes who nearly crashed out of the Prologue. “Stage 1 long day, P3 overall,” was his succinct social media post, preferring to let his results do the talking. “Really happy with my bike, let’s see what happens tomorrow.”
TALKING DAKAR WITH MASON KLEIN By Scot Harden
W
hat a difference a year makes. Last year at AIMExpo Multi-Time Hall of Famer and Dakar competitor Scot Harden caught up with Mason Klein after his Rally 2 Championship Season and crashing out of Dakar 2023 just weeks before the trade show. During the offseason, Klein made some changes to his program and has subsequently broken the Internet with his Privateer ride on the Kove 450 Rally bike.
Then things started going off the rails as the unproven and untested Kove began to show its teething pains. The Live Feed for the Dakar Rally captured Mason Klein stuck in the dunes with a broken bike on Stage 2. “Mason Klein is back on the road to Al Duwadimi after nearly 2 hours working on his Kove Moto USA 450 Rally.” At least that is what we think this said: ةبارقل هلمع دعب يمداودلا ىلإ قيرطلا ىلع نيالك نوسيام داع2 ـب زوفلا ديكأت لكب هفّلكُيس لطعلا كلذ فوك هتجارد ىلع ةعاس #راكاد2024
❗
Despite losing a ton of time on Stage 3, plus having a 1-hour penalty tacked on for an engine swap when he finally made it back to the bivouac, Mason Klein continues to fight on in the 2024 Dakar Rally. Say what you want about the bike, there is no quit in Klein and he starts the next stage looking like a champ rather than a guy who had just lost 6 hours on the leaders: P-17 MASON KLEIN (USA) KORR OFFROAD RACING. + 06H 30’ 31’’ After blowing up the Internet after soldiering on despite the broken bike blues, Mason Klein “rallied” to finish Top American in the Dakar Rally dunes on Stage 5. The time lost to a busted oil line and the added penalty hour for conducting an engine swap, Klein continues to captivate on his KOVE MOTO powering his way to a 5th place aboard his Kove Moto USA 450 EX Rally Bike on Stage 5.

Day 6 In The Dakar Rally — A Stage Too Far “Unfortunately, Stage 6B is the official end of my Dakar 2024. It has been quite a ride. From the planning stage until today I have given it my all. I wasn’t sure if I would make it this year, but with the help of my family, friends and sponsors that believed in me, I was able to get to the start line. KOVE MOTO stood up and gave me a Gen 2 bike. I knew what I was signing up for, a virtually untested, fresh off the production line bike. I was excited to be a part of
the R&D process. The moment I got my hands on the bike, my team and I did our best to prepare it. I have faith in the bike’s future, the company, and their plans for its future in Rally. I feel like the outcome of this race would have been different if I just had a bit more time with this bike.
“I believe I will win this race one day, but for now I am 100% happy because I gave it my all. Thanks for the positive comments and messages. I read them all and I see you. Thank you to everyone who has purchased my t-shirts. How lucky am I? I’ve participated in Dakar three times, before turning 23. I’m an American “Rally Kid” living the dream of a lifetime.”
“I may not have made it to the finish line, but I definitely had a good ride. Dakar is the greatest race in the world. I’ve shown up, showed you what I can do and look forward to doing it again next year. I’ve learned a ton. It takes enormous effort and the support of too many people to list, but you know who you are.
KLEIN TO KOVE FOR DAKAR… AND BEYOND
K
ove came out of nowhere to have all three riders finish the 2023 Dakar Rally on the ultimate bargain bike when it comes to world rally specs. The Chinese company then made a bold statement in Milan showing off a customer version of the rally bike, but also 250 and 450 MX machines along with a race-ready appearing EV and a number of prototype roadracers and streetbikes. They also announced American Rally sensation Mason Klein will ride the new 2024 Kove 450 Rally EX and will have access to the factory technicians, parts and the factory support, but with the flexibility of his own program. Kove Moto USA is not only supporting Klein’s Dakar campaign, they will be showing off the full range to U.S. dealers at AIMExpo (Booth #5160)… and maybe even Mason himself with some Dakar hardware. Klein made his mark on the Rally-Raid world with a breakout performance at his first Dakar in 2022 where he finished ninth. Mason went onto win that year’s inaugural Rally2 W2RC championship and lead a couple stages in 2023 before a big get off took him out of contention. On the eve of Dakar 2024 Klein says his and the bike are ready.
Get caught up with Scot and Mason’s 2023 recap and then swing by Booth #5160 at AIMExpo next month for a 2024 progress report and make up your own mind if Kove is the real deal!
BACK FOR MORE? “

e have seen a lot of support for Kove on the Internet… Of course there’s been a lot of ridcule, too,” Kove’s founder Zhang Xue was quick to admit following the teething pains of each stage. “The last thing Kove needs is ridicule… If a dream can be realized easily, can it even be called a dream? Shouldn’t dreams be pursued with all one’s might? That is why Kove will continue to do what it’s always done.” Zhang Xue has a definite plan for making the dream of Dakar a reality. The first year was simply to finish… which all three Chinese team riders did in 2023. “Sticking to my own five year plan, this year we are in the Top 20. Next year we will be in the Top 10 now that Kove has reached a preliminary agreement with at least two Top 10 riders. “We can do BETTER next year,” claims Klein in a lighthearted video with Kove visionary Zhang Xue. In the meantime, the grateful race team presented him with this year’s bike and promised to send a new engine so he can get some development time in before next year’s Dakar… and spoiler alert Klein and Kove are teaming up to tackle the Baja 1000: www.youtube.com/watch?v=TdvER9gq-u0

ANAMOSA ANNOUNCEMENTS
A
lthough it is the county seat for Jones County, Anamosa, Iowa, has a population under 6,000 and was barely a gas stop off I-80 that is until locals John and Jill Parham launched J&P Cycles back in 1979. The parts house became a Mecca for motorcyclists online and in person hosting major gatherings over the decades. Then they added the museum to really put the town on the motorcycle world map.
operated as a nonprofits. “As is proper with closing nonprofits, the Museum utilized professional counsel during the process. We thank you for your support over the years.” They also brought in auction impresario Dana Mecum to handle the sale. “After decades of serving as a successful steward within the realms of historic motorcycle preservation and education, everything went under the gavel September 6-9,” said Mecum.
The National Motorcycle Museum was home to more than 500 motorcycles, bicycles, outboard motors, thousands of pieces of memorabilia, and even a couple of airplanes and a complete Shell Station from the 1920s. After 22 years in this location, however, the Board of Directors, led by Chairman Jill Parham, decided to close the Museum September 4, 2023. “We have struggled for several years to cover wages and utilities partly due to low visitation,” explained Jill. COVID was the final nail in the attendance coffin.
“With each item offered at The John Parham Estate Collection auction, tribute was paid to the enduring legacy of artistic legends and the indomitable spirit that drives automotive enthusiasts forward,” Mecum added. “As these treasures change hands, they continue to inspire, encapsulating the rich tapestry of motorcycling history and the unwavering dedication of those who have shaped it.”
The decision didn’t come easy as Jill and son Zach explained in the video produced by Mecum in advance of the auction… “But in my heart, I’m 100% good with what is happening,” says Jill of John Legacy. “He is always going to be known as the founder of J&P Cycles and the quiet man that loved the world of motorcycling, loved the history of motorcycling and loved all of the people in motorcycling.” Zach echoes this sentiment, “I hope the people who bought the memorabilia and the bikes love motorcycling and they are going to display them… that is what this is all about. As the statement on the website notes, The National Motorcycle Museum was one of about six motorcycle museums in America

In addition to the motorcycles, Jeff Decker bronzes were a highlight of the Museum. The John Parham Estate Collection included a replica 2.5-foot version of the bronze Hillclimber statue, known as “Slant Artist” — a greatly scaled down version of what is on display at the Harley-Davidson Museum as well as the Joe Petralli tribute depicting a 1937 Harley-Davidson EL engine cast entirely in bronze. Decker created the sculpture in 2002 especially for John, and he inscribed it with the message: “This sculpture is only part of the monument of Joe Petrali’s Daytona record breaker. This is a unique piece made for John Parham.” The Petralli bronze brought $82,600. Beyond the 400 bikes and bronzes and the 200-foot board track section there was an entire gas station on display. The 1920 Shell service station, measuring 10 by 20 feet, the entire station went for $188,000! Other Saturday highlights were a 1906 Crouch Model 154 that sold for $99,000, a 1952 Vincent Black Shadow at $93,500 and a 1941 Indian Four for $84,700. But the big bucks were on the Saturday finale as the landmark

DICK HAMER 11/12/1948 TO 10/2/2023
By Don Emde
S
ad to report the recent passing of an old friend of mine and many in the motorcycle industry. Dick Hamer passed away on October 2nd, 2023 of complications of Parkinson’s Disease. His family held a Celebration of Life Memorial Service at Saddleback Church in Lake Forest and another one in his hometown of Freeport, Illinois, back in November. Dick is survived by his wife Vivian, stepchildren Jenny and Michael, one grandchild Nathan, and six siblings—Joe, MaryAnn, Jim, John, Theresa and Joanne. Dick was born and raised in Freeport, Illinois. He attended the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, graduating in 1971 with a BS degree in Marketing/Business Administration. He came to the West in 1973 and established his career in the motorcycle Industry. From 1973 to 1985 he worked for Hester Communications and was publisher and sales manager for Motorcycle Dealer News. He then became marketing director for the Motorcycle and Accessory Trade Expos. After his time with Dealernews, Dick went into advertising. From 1985 to 1988 he worked for Burroughs & Associates, an Advertising and Public Relations firm, as Vice President and Accounts Management Supervisor. Dick was founder and director of the Pro Rider Benefit Fund, a philanthropic non-profit corporation providing financial assistance to seriously injured American professional motorcycle racers. In 1989, Dick decided on a major career change, and became a licensed real estate broker in Orange County, California. He
74
approached this industry with the same energy and passion that he portrayed in the motorcycle industry and became a top producing agent until his retirement in 2019. He felt blessed to have two careers that he loved. Besides his passion for two and four-wheeled “speed”, Dick was a lover of cactus, and developed cactus gardens in every house he lived in. He enjoyed photography, underwater scuba diving, skiing and racquetball. He traveled extensively and was able to ride, ski, and dive with his great buddies in many exotic locations around the world. He also had a love of exotic birds, and anyone who knew him knew Henry Bird and Harley Bird, his 2 Amazon Parrots. And if you knew Dick, you knew of his love of classic country music, most notably Merle Haggard. He knew every word to every Merle Haggard song. When people thought of Merle, they immediately thought of Dick! His truest passion, however, was for his family and friends. Dick contributed regularly to many philanthropic causes dear to his heart, including Hands Across America, Habitat for Humanity, The Cousteau Society, The Audubon Society, Tunnels to Towers Foundation, Gary Sinise Foundation and local rescue missions. He had a true zest for life. As condolences have rolled in since his passing, the recurring comments echoed appreciation of his optimism, energy, dedication, and kindness to all who knew him. Dick loved to say he “felt the need…the need for speed”. He is now looking at all the pain and discomfort from his rear view mirror. He was one of the good ones and will be missed by all. Godspeed Dick.
T
he story of how Dick Hamer met Dealernews founder Larry Hester, and subsequently went to work for him is a classic. He literally rode his motorcycle to California and through sheer luck (and a girl he was dating) connected with the guy who owned a motorcycle trade publication. You can’t make this stuff up! Although Hamer had left Dealernews for a “real job” in the real estate world, he left an indelible mark on not only the magazine, but the entire industry. Even as a successful realtor Dick always had a bike or two in his stable for years, rode up to Laguna Seca for the races and generally kept tabs on his motorcycle industry friends. When Dick was getting ready to move from Palm Desert back to Orange County for health reasons he asked me if Dealernews wanted any old back issues…I jumped at the chance and he gave me several banker’s boxes full of race programs, show directories and years’ worth of priceless industry ephemera. Most importantly shared the “true” story of how Dealernews was launched, how Don Emde, John Murphy and other legendary folks were hired, stories of the old Distributor Expo and the very first Dealer Expos before the team figured out Cincinnati was the optimal spot…

Too much to write down and remember, so the next time I went to visit I asked Dick to tell some of the stories again and I was going to record them from my phone. The plan was to transcribe the notes and then do a real video shoot, dub in some Merle Haggard music and chronicle the golden era of the motorcycle industry. So much for the best laid plans. Thanks for setting the record straight… and for setting this industry on the right track, my friend! In lieu of flowers, donations in Dick’s memory could be made to your local Parkinson’s Foundation.

pricing and being at MAP with all units that can be shown discounted to basically dealer invoice. This kills the dealers’ profitability and cash flow. With everyone running to the bottom and trying to be number one or hit Polaris’s numbers, they are inadvertently killing their bottom lines… and putting their business in jeopardy. Can-Am’s agenda was based around shrinking stretch goals for rewards programs so dealers wouldn’t have to discount products to hit their goal... Which in turn keeps the front end margins better and keeps the dealership healthy. It also keeps the brand’s reputation and value higher for both the dealer and the customer. It’s amazing to me that both brands are going after the same customer — but one brand is price shopped so hard that the dealers end up selling their product near dealer invoice. The other one has no problem selling their product for retail plus — and the customer leaves just as happy. There is more than one way to skin a cat, a right way and the wrong way! Heavy discounts and too much inventory are a disastrous combination for dealers and Polaris’ reputation. They are becoming known as the brand that always has their products discounted. This in turn shows the customer that the real price is not MSRP, the real price is what the cheapest dealer will sell it for. Leading into a possibly harsh economic time I would suggest Polaris be thinking more about the health of the dealer and their margins so they can sustain themselves in an unpredictable environment.

I talk to a lot of fellow dealers and this is a hot topic! And I’m not the only one who thinks this. What are your thoughts?
