THE HOME DEP OT YOU K NOW IS CH A NG ING Center Aisle of the Hive SketchUp, Enscape, and Photoshop

The Home Depot you know, is getting a new look. By maintaining core values and traditions, my partner and I proposed a new central Education Hub (The Hive) that welcomes customers of any age and skill level. With this new area, patrons are encouraged to learn new skills and try new products with Home Depot’s knowledgeable staff on hand. Also with this new addition, we hoped to give customers the confidence and knowledge to complete any home project with ease. Take For our submission, we proposed an interactive center that allowed creativity and curiosity to flow continuously. New Product Kiosks could give patrons their first look at the products just hitting Home Depot’s shelves, as well as How-To and tutorial videos for better understanding of that specific product. If the New Product Kiosks weren’t enough for the curious builder - we designed a Build It Bar where patrons could try out or buy the product they just saw with knowledgeable Home Depot staff.

Alternative Option 01 - Kid’s Workshop SketchUp, Enscape, and Photoshop

As it tends to happen, my partner and I realized that the open and public teaching system offered on the first level would not be as responsive as we liked to every customer that walked through the door. To teach and reach “worker bees” of any age and skill level we designed a second level that could adapt to the different programs put on at Home Depot. Take For our submission, we proposed a second level with various alternative options which included: a Kid’s Workshop, a Closed Tutorial Workshop, and a Lecture Space. With these proposed spaces we hoped that product and brand knowledge could be experienced and understood at any age.

Concept Teach It, Learn It, Try It, and Use It. Much like Level One in The Hive, we wanted to give customers the convenience of Home Depot product knowledge that was easily available at their fingertips on multiple levels. Goal To design a space that could encapsulate Home Depot’s core values and traditions, but add a new intriguing and helpful education experience that could put them over their competitors.

GUE S T HUB Guest Hub Lobby SketchUp, Podium, and Photoshop

To give guests, travelers, and employees a local central gathering space, the judges of the competition asked the designers to create a building that could house a check-in location, food hall, and living room for its patrons. In my eyes, the Guest Hub needed to act like the first floor of a hotel - to which it could give convenience and amenities to the guests when they could not find them in their homes. Take The location for the proposed resort, resides in a secluded area along Lake Myvatn. It was important to me, to include spaces that would allow travelers access and freedom to complete necessary or leisure activities at any time of the day.

Guest Hub Formal Living Room SketchUp, Podium, and Photoshop

Concept View, Freedom, and Convenience Turn the axis of a typical square building so that its corners point the way to other areas on the resort grounds. Goal Create a modern and cozy environment, that welcomed the weariest of travelers to the typical sight seers. The extensive amount of glazing allows for optimal views - of the sky or the landscape - at whatever time the traveler chooses.

Guest Hub Viewing SketchUp, Podium, and Photoshop

17

GUE S T HOUSE S In compliance with a land and building restriction, designers were asked to create mobile guests homes for the Icelandic Resort. Take In an effort to make my guests homes smaller and easier for transportation, I created not only a mobile home, but retractable home as well. In the Guest Homes, there were retractable walls and Murphy style furniture - which allowed the guest home to turn into a 15ft. by 15ft. square into a 15ft. by 30ft. home in a matter of seconds.

Concept Reflectiveness, Comfort, Freedom, Flexibility, and Retract-ability. Goal Design a versatile guest home that gives the traveler optimal views of the sky and landscape, and a cozy and unique Icelandic experience.

Next, the movable walls that contain the custom built furniture also slide into their resting positions - allowing the Murphy style furniture to flip down.

The third step, in the retraction process, allows the solid and insulated walls of the guest home to fully retract into their resting positions.

Lastly , glass panel walls slide out of the solid black walls to complete the retraction process. The pentagon form was created to mimic that of native Icelandic Turf Homes.

A NE W T Y PE OF OFFICE Livewell Collaborative is a leading design firm run by friends, alumnus, and students of the University of Cincinnati. They work with large name-brand companies such as P&G and Kraft Foods to create new ideas or projects within their respective companies.

2

Take Combine the old ideas of closed off cubicles and merge them with the new modern concepts of an open office. But also keeping in mind of Livewell’s established brand and their clients brands and their privacy as well. Concept The workplace is a maze of activity and working people. Although getting straight to place to place may seem important, I wanted to emphasis personal intrigue while one is away from their desks. In the final design, I emphasized the concept of a maze-like office space - but also included a core/center that could house the hub of the office. Goal Create a collaborative and innovative workplace that highlights upon paths, vistas, and designated spaces. Incorporate a core working zone into the plan that allows the rest of the studios and offices to work around it.

CON V E Y ING THE P OP UP E X PERIENCE In collaboration with a lead designer, I was asked to help design, create, and convey furniture elements that would enhance the experience of the client in their pop up exhibit. Completion During this project I was tasked with Photoshopping in material, textures, and colors on top of photographs (taken by the lead designer) and Revit drawings from the overall models. A challenge I found with this project - and with the photographs, was that the lines were not as clean or straight as the drawings pulled from Revit. Ultimately with this hiccup, it made it very difficult to just “overlay” material on top of the photograph renderings.

All snapshots were pulled from Revit, where they were designed and created by Moody Nolan Architects and Interior Designers.

Take At times there can be 15+ people in or around the patio - extra seating, touch points, and TV views were important characteristics for the client. With their guidance, we worked out the components that would fulfill their backyard wishes. Those four main components included: a grill/bar area, a dinning table, a hot tub, and a fire-pit area with seating. Concept Incorporate the Rustic Farm House touches on the interior of the home, with the exterior. The client stressed the importance of flow and continuity.

After the components and the initial floor plans were decided upon, the client looked to me to brainstorm some material pallets for the new patio space. Instead of just providing material pallets, I gave the client hand sketches and Photoshop renderings to tell the story I was trying to convey better. Take Incorporate the Rustic Farm House interior, with the new components on the exterior. Provide the client with a sense of flow and continuity from living space to living space. Instead of only showing the client material selections, provide them with realistic representations of what their space could look like. Goal Generate and create ideas for the client, that they could use or adapt into finalized plans and concepts. Completion Using different materials, I explored a combination of styles and textures to try and achieve the desired look of the client. In the end, the client chose to combine the Rustic Farmhouse approach with a modern Southwestern inspired vibe. They also selected an adaption of “Proposed Concept 03 for their final patio layout.
