TOELICHTING Henry Purcell at the Chapel Royal Frederik Styns

Deze avond staan anthems van Henry Purcell centraal. Purcell schreef er ongeveer 65 en de meeste werden tijdens zijn leven uitgevoerd door de Chapel Royal ter opluistering van de gebeds- en erediensten. De Chapel Royal ontstond in de 13e eeuw en was verantwoordelijk voor de organisatie van de koninklijke erediensten. Aanvankelijk reisde deze kapel – net zoals de rest van het koninklijke hof – de koning steevast achterna. Dit veranderde aan het einde van de 16e eeuw toen koning James VI opdracht gaf aan William Shaw om een kapel te bouwen nabij Stirling Castle. In de 17e eeuw kreeg de Chapel Royal een nieuw onderkomen in Whitehall. Deze kapel brandde echter af in 1698. Het huidige onderkomen van de Chapel bevindt zich sinds 1702 in het St James’s Palace in Londen.

De Chapel Royal stond naast de praktische organisatie van de erediensten ook in voor de muzikale opluistering ervan. De kapel beschikte daartoe over een koor, koorleiders en organisten. Het koor, beter bekend als the Children of the Chapel, bestond uit twaalf jongens en bereikte een hoogtepunt onder het bewind van Elizabeth I. Op dat moment waren William Byrd en Thomas Tallis de organisten van dienst. Zeker tot in 1684 kon de Master of the Children goede jongenssopranen uit provinciale koren opeisen voor de Chapel Royal.

Tot in 1626 werden de jongens ook ingezet als acteurs in het hoftheater, en in de 18e eeuw zongen ze de sopraanpartijen in de oratoria van Händel. Onder het bewind van Charles II werd het koor vaak uitgebreid met violen uit de Royal Band, en werden ook componisten, luit- en gambaspelers geëngageerd.

Henry Purcell werd getraind als koorknaap in de Chapel Royal. Nadien werd hij Gentleman-in-Ordinary (een titel die volwassenen mannen van het koor kregen) en tevens één van de organisten.

Oorspronkelijk was een anthem hetzelfde als een antifoon: een gezongen vers ter inleiding of afsluiting van een psalm. Na de Engelse Reformatie verwees de term echter naar een polyfone zetting van een heilige Engelse tekst die gezongen werd na de ochtend- en avondgebeden. De teksten kwamen voornamelijk uit de bijbel of uit The Book of Common Prayer. Na de Restauratie (1660) evolueerde het anthem van een eerder bescheiden compositie voor koor (full anthem) naar een uit de kluiten gewassen compositie voor solisten (met of zonder koor) en instrumentaal ensemble. Er ontstonden verschillende soorten anthems, waaronder ‘verse anthems’, ‘symphony anthems’ en ‘solo anthems’. In de ‘verse anthems’ treden solisten in dialoog met elkaar of met een vocaal ensemble, en wisselen fel contrasterende delen elkaar af.

Onder het bewind van Charles II werd aan deze ‘verse anthems’ een uitgebreide strijkersgroep toegevoegd, men spreekt in dit geval ook wel van ‘symphony anthems’. In de ‘solo anthems’ treedt één enkele zanger op het voorplan.

BIO The King’s Consort Het King’s Consort is één van Europa’s toonaangevende ensembles dat op oude instrumenten speelt. Het werd in 1980 opgericht door Robert King en maakte evenals het welbekende King’s Consort Choir tournees in Europa, Japan, Hong Kong, het Verre Oosten en Noord- en Zuid-Amerika. Reeds meer dan 28 jaar presenteert het King’s Consort een avontuurlijke mix van repertoire uit de periode 1600-1860. De fel geprezen opnames op het label Hyperion sleepten heel wat internationale prijzen in de wacht. Er werden meer dan één miljoen exemplaren verkocht. Het ensemble wordt speciaal gewaardeerd om zijn vele opnamen van de muziek van Händel en Purcell. De discografie omvat echter ook instrumentale muziek en koormuziek van componisten zoals Albinoni, Zelenka, Haydn, Hummel, Bach, Rossini, Mozart, Pergolesi, Astorga, Boccherini, Telemann… De integrale opnames van Purcells odes, sololiederen en religieuze werken maakten van het King’s Consort de absolute wereldautoriteit op het vlak van Purcell. Daarnaast maakte het ensemble ook opnames van oratoria en opera’s van Händel.

Robert King Robert King (1960) zong in het wereldberoemde koor van St John’s College in Cambridge. Hij is dirigent van het op authentieke instrumenten spelende ensemble The King’s Consort alsook van The King’s Consort Choir. Robert King wordt wereldwijd beschouwd als één van de belangrijkste Britse dirigenten van zijn generatie. Zijn repertoire omvat naast barokmuziek ook een groot scala aan klassieke en vroegromantische symfonische werken en koorwerken.

Zijn blik is daarbij vooral gericht op de muziek van Mozart, Haydn en Mendelssohn. Daarnaast voert hij ook muziek uit van vroeg 20e eeuwse Engelse componisten. Robert King wordt wereldwijd beschouwd als één van de leidende experts op het gebied van de muziek van Henry Purcell. Hij was ook artistiek directeur van het Wigmore Hall Purcell Tercentenary Festival alsmede auteur van de definitieve Purcellbiografie. Tevens schrijft hij teksten en presenteert hij geregeld uitzendingen voor de BBC.

TEKSTEN 1. Praise the Lord O Jerusalem, Z 46 tekst: Psalm 147: 12; Jesaja 49: 23; Psalm 48: 8; Psalm 21: 13 Het ‘verse anthem’ ‘Praise the Lord O Jerusalem’ werd wellicht geschreven in 1689. Wellicht was dit het enige anthem dat hij in dat jaar schreef. Het is een mooi voorbeeld van een ‘symphony anthem’, waarin een belangrijke rol weggelegd is voor het instrumentale ensemble.

Praise the Lord, O Jerusalem: Praise thy God, O Sion.

For kings shall be thy nursing fathers: And queens thy nursing mothers.

As we have heard, so have we seen: In the city of our God. God upholdeth the same for ever.

2. How long, great God, Z 198 tekst: John Norris – ‘The Aspiration’ John Norris (1657-1711) was dichter, filosoof en rector van Bermerton. Hij werd beschouwd als één van de laatste Cambridge Platonists, een groep enthousiastelingen die in de lijn van de humanistische traditie van Erasmus voorstander was van een rationeler christendom. Zijn gedicht ‘The Aspiration’ werd in 1688 getoonzet door Purcell. De tekst behandelt het torment van het leven, maar tegelijkertijd het hoopvolle vooruitzicht op redding en verlossing. Purcell vormde dit gedicht om tot één van zijn meest verfijnde solominiaturen.

How long, great God, must I Immured in this dark prison lie?

Where, at the grates and avenues of sense My soul must watch to have intelligence, Where but faint gleams of thee salute my sight, Like doubtful moonshine in a cloudy night.

3. It is a good thing to give thanks, Z 18 tekst: Psalm 92: 1-6 ‘It is a good thing to give thanks’ werd gecomponeerd tussen 1682 en 1685. De instrumentale partijen werden zonder twijfel geschreven voor enkele bezetting (2 violen, altviool en basso continuo). De vrolijke, dansante en gepunte ritmes verraden de muzikale voorkeur van koning Charles II, geheel geënt op de muziek die weerklonk aan het hof van de Franse koning Louis XIV. It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord: And to sing praises unto thy name, O thou most highest.

To tell of thy loving kindness early in the morning: Upon an instrument and upon the lute.

And of thy truth in the night season: Upon a loud instrument and upon the harp.

For thou Lord hast made me glad through thy works: And I will rejoice in giving praise for the operation of thy hands.

O Lord, how glorious are thy works: And thy thoughts are very deep.

An unwise man doth not well consider it: And a fool doth not understand it.

4. Let mine eyes run down with tears, Z 24 tekst: Jeremia 14: 17-22 In ‘Let mine eyes run down with tears’ (1682) worden de desolate woorden van de profeet Jeremia gezongen door vijf solisten, begeleid door basso continuo. Purcell maakt gebruik van heel wat woordschilderingen. Zo worden de tranen uit de openingszin gesymboliseerd door dalende melismen in de verschillende partijen. Ook worden de zangstemmen op ingenieuze wijze tegenover elkaar geplaatst. Een korte zinsnede zoals ‘Why hast thou smitten us?’ wordt doorgegeven van stem naar stem. Op momenten van overeenstemming en berusting – bv. de zinsnede ‘And there is no healing for us’ – komen de stemmen opnieuw samen.

5. Rejoice in the Lord always, Z 49, ‘The Bell Anthem’ tekst: Filippenzen 4: 4-7 Purcells beroemde ‘Bell Anthem’ werd geschreven tussen 1682 en 1685. Deze anthem heeft zijn titel te danken aan een 18e eeuwse kopie van het werk. Op de partituur staat te lezen ‘Rejoice in the Lord… with a Symphony imitating Bells (it was originally call’d the Bell Anthem)’. In de glorieuze opening van het anthem weerklinkt inderdaad zowel in de baspartij als in de bovenstemmen een motief dat aan luidende klokken doet denken. De dalende toonladders in combinatie met Purcells specifieke harmonieën zorgen voor het heerlijke bitterzoete gevoel dat Purcells muziek zo typeert.

Rejoice in the Lord alway, And again I say rejoice.

Let your moderation be known unto all men; The Lord is at hand.

Be careful for nothing, but in ev’ry thing By pray’r and supplication with thanksgiving Let your requests be made known unto God; And the peace of God which passeth all understanding Shall keep your hearts and minds Through Jesus Christ our Lord.

6. Hosanna in the highest, Z 187 tekst: anoniem In ‘Hossana in the highest’ maakt Purcell gebruik van een ground bass. Boven deze repetitieve hypnotiserende baslijn beweegt zich de bassolo. De muziek lijkt aan te geven dat het huwelijk waarvan sprake is in de tekst geen aards huwelijk is, maar zich afspeelt in hemelse sferen. De anonieme tekst heeft Purcell gestimuleerd om wederom royaal om te springen met woordschilderingen. Een mooi voorbeeld is het muzikale contrast tussen de zin ‘Let heav’n above’ en ‘Let earth triumph below’. Later wordt een tweede zangpartij toegevoegd en worden hemel en aarde met elkaar verenigd.

7. Remember not, Lord, our offences, Z 50 tekst: uit The Great Litany ‘Remember not, Lord, our offences’ werd geschreven in 1680 en is een mooi voorbeeld van een ‘full anthem’ waarin vijf solisten begeleid worden door basso continuo.

Remember not, Lord, our offences, Nor th’offences of our forefathers; Neither take thou vengeance of our sins, But spare us, good Lord.

Spare thy people, whom thou has redeem’d With thy most precious blood,

8. Full of wrath, his threatening breath, Z 185 tekst: Jeremy Taylor – ‘On the conversion of St Paul’ De auteur van ‘Full of wrath, his threatening breath’ was Jeremy Taylor (16131667), kapelaan van Charles I. Hij werd gevangen genomen tijdens de Engelse burgerloorlog en nadien verbannen naar Wales waar hij de meeste van zijn gedichten schreef. Purcell toonzette drie teksten van Taylor. ‘Full of wrath’ beschrijft het verhaal van Paulus die, op weg naar Damascus om Jezus’ volgelingen te bestrijden, een visioen krijgt waarin Jezus hem oproept zich te bekeren. Het felle licht dat Paulus plotseling verblindt, wordt verklankt door enkele uitbundige melismen op het woord ‘glorious’. De ritmische continuopartij illustreert Paulus’ voetstappen op weg naar Damascus.

9. I will give thanks unto thee O Lord, Z 20 tekst: Psalm 138 Het anthem ‘I will give thanks unto thee O Lord’ werd wellicht ­geschreven in 1685. Het is opnieuw een schitterend voorbeeld van een ‘symphony anthem’, waarin het instrumentale ensemble een belangrijke rol speelt. De openingssymfonie maakt gebruik van intense harmonieën en dalende chromatische lijnen. Uit deze muziek spreekt wederom melancholie en droefheid, maar ook vreugde en hoop.

Musici een plek bieden om te experimenteren: daartoe heeft het Muziekcentrum de Bijloke-Manufactuur in het leven geroepen. Het begeleiden van het parcours van musici en ensembles, gaande van productieproces tot podiumrijp werk is de uitdaging. We nodigen u uit op een eerste toonmoment!

Du hast kein Flussigon Esther Venrooy en Femke Gyselinck benaderen voor hun Manufactuurproject in Muziekcentrum De Bijloke de ruimte van het 16de-eeuwse Kraakhuis. Hoe wordt de architecturale ruimte beïnvloed door het versterken/benadrukken of juist weglaten van visuele informatie die auditief geïnterpreteerd en/of geregistreerd wordt? Esther Venrooy en Femke Gyselinck onderzoeken hoe de visuele en auditieve perceptie van de ontvanger kan geactiveerd worden. Het publiek leert de ruimte kennen aan de hand van een lichaam in dialoog met de auditieve architectuur, waarbij beide performers de klank van de danser, de akoestiek en de gecomponeerde klank in elkaar te laten overgaan.

Esther Venrooy | performer Femke Gyselinck | perfomer De Maeterlinck-sessies De Maeterlincksessies zijn een voorbereidings- en ontwikkelingstraject voor de Nabla-productie rond Maeterlinck in coproductie met de Bijloke in mei 2012. In deze sessies worden een nieuwe vocale taal en uitvoeringspraktijk voorbereid door oefening, experiment en creatie. Nieuwe vocale composities worden gerepeteerd en bijgeschaafd, opgenomen en bewerkt. Tijdens dit toonmoment wordt een ad-hoccompositie voor stemmen en elektronica gepresenteerd.
